Vikings free agent signing deemed team’s worst contract by NFL analyst

Pro Football Network’s Dallas Robinson believes the signing of cornerback Shaquill Griffin in free agency is Minnesota’s worst contract.

Handing out bad contracts is something that every team’s front office dreads. However, it’s also unrealistic to think that there won’t be at least one bad contract on every team. Whether that’s due to simple poor performance, injuries derailing a career, or other external factors, it’s inevitable that a team regrets at least one contract.

For the Minnesota Vikings, that contract is recent free agent acquisition Shaquill Griffin, according to Pro Football Network’s Dallas Robinson. Robinson recently looked at every team’s roster and found the worst contract on each team, and this pick has less to do with Griffin himself and more to do with the circumstances surrounding it.

The Vikings had a clear need at the cornerback position, and Griffin was a solid option to fill that need. The Vikings also gave the veteran cornerback a modest deal, and just one year and slightly over $4.5 million. So why, then, is this deal for a former Pro Bowl cornerback deemed the team’s worst?

Robinson argues that this contract is the team’s worst because of the future ramifications the deal has. Namely that signing Griffin when the team did cancelled out one of the compensatory picks the team would have received in the 2025 NFL Draft for losing free agents Kirk Cousins and Danielle Hunter to the Falcons and Texans respectively.

Had the Vikings waited on signing Griffin until after the May 1st deadline, they would have been able to plug the hole in the secondary while also gaining the full slate of compensatory picks for next year’s draft — a draft where they’re already significantly strapped for capital.

The flip side of that argument is that, had the Vikings waited to sign Griffin, there’s no guarantee that he would have been on the free agent market when the team was ready to make a deal. Still, would that have been such a loss? Would the compensatory pick the Vikings sacrificed to sign Griffin have been better for the team in the long run? Only time will tell.

Mekhi Blackmon labeled a potential breakout candidate by PFN

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Mekhi Blackmon has been named a potential breakout candidate for the 2024 season by Tony Catalina of PFN.

The Minnesota Vikings’ defense was much improved over the 2023 season compared to the 2022 squad. The defensive scheme Brian Flores has employed with the team seems to have clicked and is starting to pay dividends. But the squad heads into the 2024 season with some significant questions on the defense, particularly in the cornerback room.

The Vikings signed former Jacksonville Jaguars and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Shaquill Griffin in the off-season in the hopes that he can bolster the cornerback corps, return to his former Pro Bowl form, and provide some veteran leadership and mentorship for their rookie third-round pick, Khyree Jackson.

But another former third-round pick has caught the eye of some during mini-camps. Pro Football Network’s Tony Catalina examined every team heading into training camp and identified one potential breakout player from each. For the Vikings, Catalina’s pick is Mekhi Blackmon.

The Vikings entered the offseason with question marks at the CB position, and as the season creeps close, they still have some of those questions. However, Blackmon hopes to be the answer for them, and those around the team believe he can be. The young DB has a chance to make a name for himself in 2024 and solidify a unit that needs it.

Blackmon had an up-and-down start to his Vikings career in his rookie campaign of 2023. He had some solid stats, with 43 tackles, three tackles for loss, seven passes defended, and a fumble recovery. On the flip side, Blackmon could only garner three starts as a rookie even on a team that struggled at the position.

If Blackmon can step up in his sophomore season and become a reliable cover corner for the team, it would go a long way toward making the Vikings’ defense one of the best units in the league.

NFL Media: CB Shaquill Griffin is Vikings’ top ‘player to root for’

Shaquill Griffin was a Pro Bowl-caliber cornerback with the Seattle Seahawks. Now he looks to regain that form with the Minnesota Vikings.

Every season, a bevy of players change teams. Some do so by leaving the college ranks and joining their professional teams via the NFL Draft. Others score a big payday and change teams in free agency. Others still seek out a change of scenery in hopes of resurrecting their careers. Such is the case for new Minnesota Vikings cornerback Shaquill Griffin.

Frequently, players in this third category find themselves the center of “feel-good” stories, as the media tries to portray them as the underdog. Who doesn’t love a good underdog story, right? In that vein, Griffin has been tabbed as the Vikings’ top player to root for by Dan Parr of NFL.com.

Parr recently went through each team in the NFC, singling out one player on each as the “player to root for,” with Griffin earning top marks for the Vikings. Griffin comes to the Vikings after spending the 2023 season with the Carolina Panthers and, later, the Houston Texans. Griffin struggled in 2023, and he hasn’t been the same player for several years, as he was early in his career with the Seattle Seahawks.

In just his third year in the league, Griffin was a standout corner for the Seahawks, notching his first Pro Bowl selection and seemingly well on his way to becoming one of the better corners in the league for years to come.

Griffin will be looking to regain that status with the Vikings and hopefully improve a cornerback unit that could really use some more production. Griffin will also provide veteran leadership regardless of performance which is where the young players like Khyree Jackson will benefit most.

Vikings likely lose compensatory pick with Shaquill Griffin contract

The Minnesota Vikings signed cornerback Shaquill Griffin to a one-year deal last week, and likely lost a compensatory pick in the deal.

The Minnesota Vikings made a slew of signings last week as they continue to work on the roster heading into the 2024 season. Among the moves was signing former Houston Texans cornerback Shaquill Griffin to a one-year deal. Now contract details have emerged, and some may be upset at what they show.

The Vikings ended up giving Griffin a one-year deal worth a total of $4.55 million. That number includes a $2.4 million signing bonus and a $1.59 million base salary that is fully guaranteed. The deal also includes up to $510K in per-game roster bonuses and a $50K workout bonus.

The aspect of this deal that may ruffle a few feathers is that the signing — at least temporarily — negates one of the third-round compensatory picks the Vikings would have received next year for the free agents they lost in this year’s free agency period. Minnesota could still get a compensatory pick for offensive lineman Dalton Risner if he signs elsewhere before the Monday following the NFL draft.

Griffin comes to the Vikings after spending his first four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, where he made the Pro Bowl in 2019, his third year in the league. Since leaving Seattle, Griffin has had stops in Jacksonville and Carolina before finishing last season with the Texans.

Primarily a left corner throughout most of his career, Griffin did get experience on the right side during his time in Houston. That versatility should serve him well in the Brian Flores defense, at a position the Vikings need help at.

The signing may also free up the Vikings to make an aggressive move to get their quarterback of the future in the NFL draft, as cornerback has been a popular position in mock drafts for the Vikings should they opt not to address the QB situation.

Vikings sign CB Shaquill Griffin to one-year contract

The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to a one-year deal with cornerback Shaquill Griffin for up to $6 million

The Minnesota Vikings have made another depth signing on the defensive side of the football. According to Bleacher Report’s Justin Schultz, the Vikings have signed cornerback Shaquill Griffin to a one-year contract worth up to $6 million.

The Vikings needed to add some depth to the cornerback room, and Griffin fits the bill. He played with the Houston Texans for 10 games in the 2023 season before being released. The Carolina Panthers then picked him up, and he played in three of a possible six games for them.

The structure of the deal will be important here as it could impact the compensatory pick formula for the 2025 NFL draft if it ends up too high. Right now, the Vikings are projected to get two third-round compensatory picks.

Griffin is a former third-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks who spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Former Panthers CB Shaquill Griffin reportedly signing with Vikings

Shaquill Griffin, who appeared in three games for the Panthers this past season, is reportedly headed to Minnesota.

Shaquill Griffin’s brief Carolina Panthers career will remain exactly that.

According to Bleacher Report NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the 28-year-old cornerback is expected to sign a one-year pact with the Minnesota Vikings. The deal, per Schultz, is worth up to $6 million.

Carolina claimed Griffin off waivers back on Nov. 30, 2023. He began the season as a member of the Houston Texans, for whom he registered six starts over 10 games.

Griffin made his Panthers debut in the team’s win over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 15. He played all eight of his snaps on special teams.

The former Pro Bowler would hit the field as a corner beginning in Week 16, where he recorded 14 defensive snaps against the Green Bay Packers. He then got the start in Week 17’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Prior to his short stay in Charlotte, Griffin racked up four years with the Seattle Seahawks and two with the Jaguars.

Ejiro Evero gives update on Shaquill Griffin’s progress

Panthers DC Ejiro Evero on CB Shaquill Griffin: He’s definitely gonna be a part of the plans as we work down the stretch

How close is Shaquill Griffin to suiting up for the Carolina Panthers? Well, based on what defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero said this afternoon, he may not be too far off.

Evero was asked about the status of his newest cornerback following Thursday’s practice.

“He’s doin’ a great job, he had an interception in practice today,” he replied with a smile. “Shaquill, he’s comin’ along. Really smart young man, learnin’ the defense really fast and he’s definitely gonna be a part of the plans as we work down the stretch.”

The Panthers, who have been dealing with depth issues at the position all season, added the former Pro Bowl defender for this stretch last week. Griffin, after being waived by the Houston Texans on Dec. 6, was claimed by Carolina the next day.

A former third-round pick, Griffin has played seven NFL seasons. Over that time—which included stints with the Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars and Texans—the six-foot, 198-pounder recorded 360 combined tackles, seven interceptions and a sack.
