Notre Dame’s Spencer Stastney is Big Ten Third Star of the Week

Congratulations, Spencer!

After Notre Dame earned a weekend split against Minnesota, one of its players has been rewarded. Defenseman Spencer Stastney is the latest Big Ten Third Star of the Week. This is the second consecutive week an Irish player has earned that honor after Ryder Rolston won it last week. Stastney was honored alongside goaltenders Erik Portillo of Michigan and Jakub Dobes of Ohio State.

Stastney, who was an honorable mention on the preseason All-Big Ten Team, led the Irish with three assists in the two games against the Gophers. One of those assists helped Landon Slaggert score the game-winner in overtime of the second game. That increased his team-leading total in that category to 15.

This is the first time Stastney has been named a Big Ten star. In addition to this, he and Irish teammate Graham Slaggert are candidates for this year’s Senior CLASS Award, which is given to a senior or graduate student who excels in competition, character, community and classroom.

Notre Dame’s Matt Hellickson is finalist for Senior CLASS Award

Before Notre Dame concludes its regular season against Penn State this weekend, there’s a little pride to be had in the program.

Before Notre Dame concludes its regular season against Penn State this weekend, there’s a little pride to be had in the program. Matt Hellickson has been named one of 10 finalists for this year’s Senior CLASS Award. The winner will be determined by voting from fans, coaches and media alike. If Hellickson wins the award, which focuses on the complete student-athlete and encourages them to be a positive leader for their communities, he would join Jake Evans (2018) and David Brown (2007) as winners from Notre Dame.

Hellickson, a defenseman and alternate captain for the Irish, has not missed a game during his collegiate career. During that time, he has accumulated 13 goals and 36 assists. Off the ice, he took a 3.3 GPA into the second semester at the Mendoza College of Business this year. He also has served on Notre Dame’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council and helped with the Fight for Life, Rally for Rudy and Fighting to Read, Fighting to Feed.

Florida quarterback Kyle Trask is one of 30 candidates for the 2020-21 Senior CLASS Award, as was announced over the weekend.

Trask is one of five quarterbacks to be nominated for the award, which is given to a student-athlete that demonstrates leadership qualities on and off the field.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Two Florida players — Tim Tebow in 2009 and Johnny Townsend in 2017 — have won the award, and the pair are the only two finalists for UF since the award began recognizing football players in 2008.

The list of 30 will be trimmed to 10 by the end of the regular season, and those 10 will be placed on a ballot for media, coaches and fans to vote on. The winner is announced during the bowl season in December.
