Former Notre Dame lacrosse player to appear on ‘Jeopardy!’

The category is Intelligent Former Notre Dame Student-Athletes.

When Notre Dame lacrosse player [autotag]Taylor Clagett[/autotag] graduated from the university in 2008, he had a cumulative GPA of 3.236. Now, he’ll get to show off just how smart he is. Clagett, whose finance degree from the Mendoza College of Business eventually led him to become the marketing director he is today, will appear on Friday’s episode of “Jeopardy!” as a contestant. The Chesapeake Beach, Maryland native is up against Minneapolis environmental consultant Ben Sasamoto as well as the day’s returning champion, Baltimore social studies teacher Nik Berry.

Clagett was one of the country’s best at taking faceoffs when he played for the Irish. Over four years, he won 624 of the 1,036 faceoffs he took for a .602 winning percentage. He was a four-time monogram winner, and five of his eight points he scored over 54 career games went for goals.

They say it’s harder to get on “Jeopardy!” than it is to get into an Ivy League school. By succeeding at that, Clagett already has won as far as we’re concerned. Still, let’s hope this isn’t his only episode!

Jerome Bettis finishes degree from Mendoza School of Business

The Bus has come into the graduation station.

The late great Jim Valvano famously said, “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.” Years after being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, [autotag] Jerome Bettis[/autotag] decided the time was right to return to Notre Dame and complete his degree. To do so 28 years after leaving the university showed he wouldn’t give up on finishing this journey. Finally, he has, and the Mendoza School of Business now has one of its most famous alumni in recent memory:

Congratulations to Jerome and all of the Notre Dame students as commencement takes part this coming weekend. No matter how old you are or what you’re going to school for, being able to get to the finish line is a big accomplishment. It can be so easy to throw in the towel when the road is tough, but forcing yourself not to is a must on the road to success. With that in mind, here’s to the future.

Before Notre Dame concludes its regular season against Penn State this weekend, there’s a little pride to be had in the program.

Before Notre Dame concludes its regular season against Penn State this weekend, there’s a little pride to be had in the program. Matt Hellickson has been named one of 10 finalists for this year’s Senior CLASS Award. The winner will be determined by voting from fans, coaches and media alike. If Hellickson wins the award, which focuses on the complete student-athlete and encourages them to be a positive leader for their communities, he would join Jake Evans (2018) and David Brown (2007) as winners from Notre Dame.

Hellickson, a defenseman and alternate captain for the Irish, has not missed a game during his collegiate career. During that time, he has accumulated 13 goals and 36 assists. Off the ice, he took a 3.3 GPA into the second semester at the Mendoza College of Business this year. He also has served on Notre Dame’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council and helped with the Fight for Life, Rally for Rudy and Fighting to Read, Fighting to Feed.

Notre Dame senior running back Mick Assaf announced Friday that he is leaving football. He will not play for the Irish this season so that he can focus completely on YOKE, his video gaming business. He released the following statement:

Asaf played in all 13 games for the Irish in 2019 and won the season’s Walk-On Players Union Player of the Year Award at the Echoes. He carried the ball from scrimmage nine times for 34 yards, giving him an average of 3.8 yards a carry. His best game came against Bowling Green, when he gained 15 yards on four carries.

A product of the Mendoza College of Business, Asaf has majored in marketing and minored in innovation and entrepreneurship. Now, the Atlanta native will use all of that to try and make his mark on the gaming industry. As one era in his life draws to a close, he can be enthusiastic about his new one. Best of luck to him going forward.

Even with college hockey the furthest thing from most sports fans’ minds right now, things keep happening in that area.
