Texas and Oklahoma reportedly interested in joining the SEC

Texas and Oklahoma have reportedly shown interest in joining the SEC.

If you’re against forming a super conference, today is not your day.

According to a recent report from Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle (link requires subscription), Texas and Oklahoma are interested in leaving the Big 12 and joining the Southeastern Conference. If it came to fruition, it would shake up the college football landscape and become the first 16-team super conference.

Although there are pros and cons to every decision of this nature, the upside that may initially come to mind for Longhorns fans would be to renew the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry, while still keeping the Red River Rivalry intact.

It’s unclear how serious the report is, but it feels likely that it would be a decision that solely lands on the SEC’s shoulders. The Big 12 could pull out the red carpet in an attempt to keep their two top teams, but it may not be enough.

An announcement could come within a couple of weeks concerning the potential addition of UT and OU to the league, the person said, which would give the SEC 16 schools and make it the first of a national super-conference.

The report states that SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey declined to comment on the possible expansion.

Big 12 Conference flips the script on the SEC when it comes to defense

The Oklahoma Sooners defense saw a complete overhaul under Alex Grinch. A big reason why they are poised to make a run at the CFP.

Traditionally, when viewers tuned into Big 12 conferences games they knew they would get an offensive firestorm, which looked more like a basketball score by the end of the game than a football game. Continue reading “Big 12 Conference flips the script on the SEC when it comes to defense”

College Football News predicts LSU’s 2021 season

A look at how CFN believes the LSU Tigers’ season will go with game-by-game predictions

Our colleagues at College Football News are continuing their series of previewing the 2021 college football season. This time a preview with game-by-game predictions for the entire Southeastern Conference.

After winning it all in 2019, the Louisiana State Tigers took a major step back with a 5-5 record to close out the pandemic-shortened campaign in 2020. The team needed to replace star quarterback Joe Burrow, a stud receiver in Justin Jefferson among others.

Quarterback Myles Brennan put together some big numbers in only three games played as he split time with Max Johnson and T.J. Finley. With Finley gone, it comes down to the senior Brennan or the sophomore Johnson. The team also has questions about their running backs with Tyrion Davis-Price and John Emery Jr, can the duo step up their production in 2021?

With no Terrace Marshall Jr or Ja’Marr Chase who left for the NFL, can a young stud rise to the occasion? Last year, Kayshon Boutte led the team in receiving yards but split targets from Arik Gilbert (now at Georgia) and Marshall (NFL). With no other primary target, Boutte will get his opportunity to be the featured pass-catcher.

CFN predicts that the Tigers will finish second in the SEC West division. LSU Tigers Wire takes a look at the game-by-game breakdown:

College Football Playoffs: LSU Tigers on the outside looking in for the SEC

When it comes to the College Football Playoffs, don’t forget about the LSU Tigers in 2021.

Just a season ago the LSU Tigers were coming off perfection. They put together a 15-0 season led by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Joe Burrow, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and Justin Jefferson among other notable offensive weapons. Last season was not anywhere near where many thought the LSU football team would be. Maybe not challenge for the SEC Championship again but no one thought a .500 season was on the horizon.

Replacing one of the best quarterbacks in LSU’s history is no small feat. The team tried Max Johnson, TJ Finley, and Myles Brennan at quarterback. Going into this season it appears to be Brennan vs Johnson for the role of QB1 in the Tigers offense. They need to figure out their running back situation as well. No Ja’Marr Chase or Terrace Marshall Jr will complicate things on the outside but they have players who can step in.

According to ESPN’s Heather Dinich (requires subscription), Louisiana State is one of the teams to not forget about in regards to the CFP from a Southeastern Conference perspective. At the very top of the SEC, you have annual contenders the Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs. Behind them, the outsiders appear to be the Texas A&M Aggies. Then you have the LSU Tigers.

LSU will have two new coordinators and a new quarterback but plenty of talent returning all over the roster. There remains a cloud of uncertainty looming with a major Title IX lawsuit that recently included Ed Orgeron as a defendant. – Dinich

There are plenty of issues for the Tigers to work through but prior to the 2019 season, I don’t think anyone saw perfection coming from that team. If they can get clicking early on, their momentum could carry them back towards the top of the SEC.

5. Open Dates

The Big Ten might not be doing the 2020 fall football thing anymore, but at least its schedule seemed to be a little more – let’s put it this way – realistic.

The Big Ten had built-in fail-safe weeks at the end, just in case there needed to be a postponement for any possible issue due to a coronavirus outbreak. The conference – and this turned out to be a part of its problem – was also supposed to start three weeks earlier than the SEC. That allowed the schedule to be spread out more.

The SEC has one big open date in early November when six teams are off, and four are off on October 31st and four are resting on October 24th.

And that’s it.

However this is going to work, the SEC is going to pound right through with a ten-game schedule in 11 weeks, with almost no margin for any error.

The almost part of that comes from the SEC Championship. If it’s played on December 19th, then December 12th could be used as a make-up week in case something goes wrong. But if the SEC Championship is on the 12th, there might be a total mess if one of the league’s stars ends up missing a week or two along the way.

This could get particularly ugly for …

NCAA President states no fall championships, FBS not affected

NCAA President Mark Emmert released a video in which he stated there will be no fall championships in 2020. CFP is not a part of that.

The NCAA released a video on social media stated that there will be no fall championships. This ruling impacts all of FCS fall sports and Division I soccer and volleyball. This does not have any bearing on the state of the College Football Playoffs. The Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) operates independently from the NCAA in terms of football championships.

“We cannot, at this point, have fall championships”-NCAA President Mark Emmert

In the video he discussed moving the fall season to spring while keeping the athletes engaged with their coaches, focusing on their academic studies and being prepared to play in the spring.

The College Football Playoff committee has yet to state whether or not there will be a playoff but they are finalizing their protocols for the upcoming season. They will release the final standings on Sunday December 20th.

As it sits right now the ACC, Big 12 and SEC are the only Power Five conferences still planning on playing in the fall. American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, and the Sun Belt still remain from the Group of Five conferences.

It is a very real possibility that the three remaining Power Five conferences could be the only ones left standing. If that were to be the case you could see a scenario where the winner of each conference could get a bid into the playoff with the highest ranked team remaining make it as the fourth team.

This all hinges on what the CFP committee decides and that will likely come in the next few weeks as football season approaches. We are still not in the clear but appears as if we will have fall football at this point.

SEC hoping Big 12 ‘stays committed’ in order to preserve fall college football

There is no doubt the reality of COVID-19 and college football is finally here. All eyes are on the Big 12 now for its decision.

There is no doubt the reality of COVID-19 and college football is finally here.

The Big 10 and Pac-12 have canceled its fall seasons with hopes of pushing to the spring. Now, the wait is on for final decisions from the Big 12, SEC and ACC.

The SEC and ACC have been steadfast the last 48 hours that they will push on with the idea of playing this fall. The Big 12, though, is reportedly split in its decision heading into a Tuesday night meeting.

The SEC and ACC are needing the Big 12 to hang on, and both conferences have told reporters as such.

If not, then it won’t make much sense for the ACC and SEC to move on with a fall football season and the entire college football landscape will be pushed to the spring.

The Big 12 is scheduled to meet with its school presidents and board of directors on Tuesday night.
