Matt McMahon speaks on Texas Tech loss

Here’s what Matt McMahon said after LSU’s eighth straight loss.

LSU’s losing streak hit eight on Saturday as Matt McMahon’s group experiences growing pains in Year 1.

Texas Tech got the 78-68 win in Baton Rouge.

“We didn’t do a good enough job in the last nine minutes to give ourselves an opportunity to win,” McMahon said after the game. “And that’s the most disappointing part of it.”

LSU was competitive, but let it slip away late.

“The attention to detail in the scouting report, running three-point shooters off the line, finishing possessions with defensive rebounds, and taking care of basketball — all of those things have to be done at a higher level as we move forward,” McMahon added.

He also offered praise to guard [autotag]Adam Miller[/autotag].

Miller’s 20 points were a team-high for LSU. That included going five for 10 from deep. Next up for LSU is a trip to Missouri. According to KenPom, LSU isn’t projected to win a game until hosting South Carolina on Feb. 18.

PHOTOS: LSU basketball comes up short vs. Texas Tech in SEC/Big 12 Challenge

LSU has now lost eight straight.

The Tigers’ stretch of futility continues.

LSU had a chance to win at home on Saturday against Texas Tech, overcoming a poor start and early 11-point deficit to take a five-point lead in the second half. However, the Tigers went cold in the final minutes, hitting just one of their final 13 shots in a 76-68 loss.

After a 12-1 start to the season, LSU now sits at just 12-9 in coach Matt McMahon’s first season with a stretch of three Quadrant 1 conference games up next on the docket. Things may get even worse before they get better for the Tigers.

Here were the photos from Saturday’s loss.

How to catch all of the action between Alabama and Oklahoma in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

[autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] and the Alabama men’s basketball team will look to extend their winning streak to 10 on Saturday afternoon against the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman.

While Alabama enters the matchup as one of the nation’s top teams, the Sooners are a bit of a slide since the start of conference play. Oklahoma has lost three straight and is just 2-6 in Big 12 play.

The Crimson Tide are led by the freshman duo of Brandon Miller and Noah Clowney while the Sooners are led by a pair of seniors in Grant Sherfield and Tanner Groves.

Here is how you can catch all of the action between the Crimson Tide and the Sooners.

Matt McMahon says Justice Hill has rejoined team, will suit up Saturday vs. Texas Tech

Hill missed the last three games after stepping away for personal reasons.

Good news has been few and far between for LSU basketball during the month of January as the Tigers look to end a seven-game skid when they host Texas Tech on Saturday afternoon as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge. However, they got one piece of good news on Thursday.

Speaking to the media, LSU basketball coach [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] said that starting point guard [autotag]Justice Hill[/autotag] has rejoined the team and is expected to be in uniform for Saturday’s game. Hill has missed the last three games after stepping away from the team for personal reasons, which wasn’t disciplinary according to McMahon.

“Yes, I would expect Justice Hill will be in uniform Saturday. He will rejoin the team. He’ll practice today. What the role is going forward will be determined, but he will be back with the team and practice this afternoon (Thursday),” McMahon said.

Based on these comments, it’s unclear if Hill will return to the starting lineup for the game against the Red Raiders, but it seems he will at least be available. Regardless, it’s welcome news for an LSU team that, after starting 12-1, now sits at 12-8 and could use all the help it can get.

LSU continues to struggle in loss to TCU, fourth loss in five games

The second-half run falls short for the Tigers

It was another disappointing for Will Wade’s group today.

When it looked like LSU was getting healthier with a chance to break out of its slump, LSU couldn’t secure a win against TCU to drop to 16-5 on the year.

The first 15 minutes of the game were back and forth, with LSU getting out to a 24-23 lead. After that, TCU went on a run to close out the half that gave the Horned Frogs a 38-29 lead. That run extended into the second half when TCU’s Chuck O’Bannon got hot from three. That put LSU down 16 and gave TCU its largest lead of the day.

LSU was able to go on a 15-2 run and cut the TCU lead to three with 11:00 to go.

TCU found their footing and a foul behind the 3-point line gave the Horned Frogs a few free throws to make it 65-56.

The refs blew the whistle a lot in this game, allowing both teams to reach the bonus fairly early. Darius Days and Eric Gaines both found themselves in foul trouble down the stretch.

The amount of free-throw opportunities LSU handed TCU in the second half is what allowed the Horned Frogs to hold off an LSU comeback.

Tari Eason led the Tigers in points, scoring 16. Days and Gaines added 14 apiece.

For TCU, it was O’Bannon, as well as Mike Miles Jr, who shared the game-high, each scoring 19.

A significant storyline today was the return of Xavier Pinson, though he was still on a minutes limit.

LSU has not looked the same since Pinson left the win over Tennessee earlier this month. LSU has been waiting for his return, hoping he would give a boost to the offense.

He only played seven minutes today. Not enough time to gauge if getting Pinson back is really the magic ingredient for a struggling LSU team.

Days, also returning from injury, only shot 5-14 from the field, but did earn his 20th career double-double.

LSU has now lost four of five. Over the last few weeks, LSU’s offensive struggles have come to the forefront after the defense covered them up the first couple of months of the season.

There are too many instances where LSU isn’t able to finish inside. When pressured, their guards aren’t decisive enough with the ball. There’s no knock-down shooter either that Will Wade can rely on when they need to go on a run.

When LSU isn’t creating points in transition, the offense is almost non-existent. Brandon Murray has offered promise the last couple of weeks, but he’s just a freshman who isn’t ready to be the scorer Cam Thomas was last year.

LSU, once again, showed a fight today after erasing a large deficit. The issue is getting into that deficit in the first place. LSU needs to shoot better out of the gate and now rely on 10-0 runs happening every second half.

Next up, LSU will host Ole Miss on Tuesday as they try to get back on track.

UGA basketball left out of SEC/Big 12 Challenge

The Georgia Bulldogs basketball team will no be participating in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge this season.

The Georgia Bulldogs basketball team will no be participating in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge this season. The Dawgs are one of four unlucky SEC basketball programs who won’t participate.

The SEC has 14 basketball teams while the Big 12 has only ten. This means that four SEC teams have to sit out each season. The SEC/Big 12 Challenge is expected to take place on Jan. 30, 2021.

The most interesting games in the series will be Texas at Kentucky, Auburn at Baylor, and Kansas at Tennessee. Last season’s college basketball season ended too soon. Hopefully this season will go smoother.

Here are the SEC’s ten match-ups with the Big 12:

Instead of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, the Dawgs will face off against the Memphis Tigers. UGA upset Memphis last season in what was the high point of the season for the Bulldogs. Georgia loses an elite player in Anthony Edwards to the NBA Draft this offseason.
