5 things to know about Packers’ third-round pick Sean Rhyan

A few interesting things to know about offensive lineman Sean Rhyan, the Packers’ pick in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers used the 92nd overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft on UCLA offensive lineman Sean Rhyan, a big, athletic blocker with a bunch of experience playing left tackle in the Pac-12.

While he wore No. 74 in college, Rhyan will wear No. 75 for the Packers. He may get a chance to compete for the open starting jobs at right guard and right tackle this summer.

Here are five interesting things to know about Rhyan, the fourth of the Packers’ 11 draft picks in 2022:

Instant analysis of the Packers drafting OL Sean Rhyan at No. 92 overall

Breaking down the Packers’ selection of UCLA OL Sean Rhyan at No. 92 overall in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers needed help on their offensive line and they got with their final pick of Day 2. With the 92nd overall pick, the Packers selected UCLA offensive lineman Sean Rhyan. As a three-year starter for the Bruins, Rhyan offers an option at both tackle and guard for Green Bay.

In 2019, he became the first UCLA true freshman to start a season-opener at tackle since 2012. Rhyan became a mainstay at the left tackle spot, garnering multiple accolades for his outstanding play over three seasons.

During his career, Rhyan was a key contributor for one of the top rushing offenses in the country. He also held his own in pass protection. As a freshman, Rhyan allowed only one sack and 37 pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. In 2021, he allowed one sack and 13 total pressures in 12 games. Last year, Rhyan was named to the first-team All-Pac-12 team by the league’s coaches and the second team by the Associated Press and PFF.

Rhyan has good size at 6-5 and 321 pounds and is surprisingly nimble. This was showcased through his short-area quickness and ability to climb to the second level as a run blocker. He has a proportional build, solid wingspan, and huge hands. It is believed that he can make a seamless transition to guard while offering flexibility as a tackle in a pinch.

Rhyan’s versatility is exactly what the Packers look for in their linemen. And the good news is, he won’t have to play right away, even though that is an option. Green Bay’s starting line is up in the air after releasing right tackle Billy Turner during the offseason. They also won’t have Elgton Jenkins at the start of the regular season as he recovers from an ACL injury. Yosh Nijman is the expected front runner for right tackle duties, but the Packers could give Rhyan a look there as well.

Ideally, Rhyan will sit at the beginning of his career to figure out his best position. He does have a lot of desirable traits, but his unpolished technique in pass protection may be ill-advised to leave out on the edge. Experts believe he has the hand usage, bend, and build to transition to guard. Green Bay already has a solid foundation of guards in Jenkins, Jon Runyan Jr, and Royce Newman. However, Jenkins could make the move to tackle once he is healthy. Rhyan will provide another solid option at multiple positions.

It could be the perfect situation for Rhyan to enter. There is no pressure to play right away, and he is a part of an organization known for developing offensive linemen.

The Green Bay Packers selected UCLA offensive lineman Sean Rhyan with the 92nd overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft.

Rhyan started 31 games at left tackle over three seasons. He was a freshman All-American in 2019 and a first-team All-Pac 12 selection in 2021.

Despite experience at left tackle, Rhyan has the right kind of size and athleticism to move inside and compete to be a starter at guard at the NFL level.

Rhyan stands 6-4 and weighs 321 pounds. He has an 80″ wingspan and 11 5/8″ hands. At the combine, Rhyan ran the 40-yard dash in 5.25 seconds, hit 33.5″ in the vertical leap, covered 9-2 in the broad jump and finished the short shuttle in 4.81 seconds and the three-cone in 7.55 seconds. His Relative Athletic Score at offensive tackle is 8.18 but jumps over 9.0 as a guard.

4 OTs the Colts should consider drafting on Day 2

Taking a look at 4 OTs the Colts should consider on Day 2 of the draft.

The Indianapolis Colts don’t have a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, but they still have a chance to grab a potential left tackle of the future at some point during Day 2.

With selections at Nos. 42 and 73 overall, the Colts will have their opportunities to take an offensive tackle to compete with Matt Pryor on the blindside. Pryor currently has the leg up in the competition, but things can change quickly.

We’re focusing solely on Day 2 of the draft in this piece for two reasons. One, the Colts don’t have a first-round pick, and it’s unlikely they move into the first round for a tackle. Two, draft weekend is crazy enough so it’s more feasible to wait until the dust is settled to list players available on Day 3.

Be sure to check out our other piece on wide receivers to target on Day 2, and we’ll have more positions to cover leading up to the draft. Also, check out Touchdown Wire’s and Draft Wire’s offensive tackle rankings.

Without further ado, here are four offensive tackle prospects the Colts should consider drafting on Day 2:

One offensive guard for the Eagles in every round of the 2022 NFL Draft

Looking at one offensive guard prospect for the Philadelphia Eagles in every round of the 2022 NFL Draft

The Eagles have the NFL’s top offensive line after leading the entire league in rushing, and a major key to that yearly dominance can be found in Howie Roseman stockpiling depth and talent.

Philadelphia has future Hall of Famers on the roster with right tackle Lane Johnson and center Jason Kelce, along with Jordan Mailata and Landon Dickerson.

Jack Driscoll is a talented find from the 2020 class, Andre Dillard is still a talented first-round backup, and Isaac Seumalo will be returning to the roster after missing the bulk of the 2021 campaign with an injury.

The Eagles also have solid reserves in Sua Opeta, Nate Herbig, Le’Raven Clark, and Brett Toth, as well.

The expectation is that Philadelphia will address the defense and wide receiver position early on, but if the Eagles continue their motto of building from the inside, there are several talented guards available in all seven rounds.

2022 NFL draft: Chargers 7-round mock draft update

With the 2022 NFL draft just days away, here is our second-to-last full mock draft update for the Los Angeles Chargers.

We are just a week away from finding out what general manager Tom Telesco, head coach Brandon Staley and the rest of the staff will do to complete the reconstruction of the Chargers ahead of the 2022 season.

With that, here is my second-to-last full mock draft update for Los Angeles.

Mel Kiper has Rams bolstering O-line with first pick in 2022 NFL draft

With depth needed along the offensive line, Mel Kiper has the Rams taking UCLA’s Sean Rhyan in the third round of his new mock draft

It’s difficult to predict which direction the Los Angeles Rams will go with their first pick in the 2022 NFL draft. Having to wait until No. 104 overall doesn’t make it any easier, of course, because we don’t have a clue which prospects will be available at that point.

Knowing how unpredictable Les Snead and Sean McVay can be, they might just go with a wide receiver or running back with their top pick. They shouldn’t, but don’t be surprised if they do.

Mel Kiper of ESPN has them going in a different direction in a collaborative three-round mock draft with Todd McShay. Kiper projected the Rams to take UCLA lineman Sean Rhyan at No. 104 overall, a prospect who can play guard or tackle in the NFL.

Kiper’s pick: Sean Rhyan, OT/G, UCLA

With Andrew Whitworth and Austin Corbett gone, the Rams could use their first pick of this draft on a college tackle who might play guard in the NFL. He can move his feet in pass pro. The Super Bowl champs could also be in on defensive backs here.

The Rams already have their replacement at left tackle, which we’re assuming Kiper knows. Joe Noteboom is going to be the starting left tackle next season, which leaves just one void on the offensive line: right guard.

Coleman Shelton was re-signed to a two-year deal and he could be the top choice to replace Corbett. Bobby Evans and Tremayne Anchrum are other options, with this battle likely to be settled in camp.

Rhyan started for three years at left tackle while with the Bruins but he has the size and strength to play guard, which is where the Rams would line him up in the event that he’s drafted by them.

Even if Rhyan doesn’t play right away, David Edwards and Evans will be free agents in 2023, so he could get a chance to start after a year of learning.

Ravens build up trenches early in 7-round mock draft by CBS Sports

The Ravens built up their depth in the trenches early in the latest seven-round mock draft by CBS Sports

The Baltimore Ravens have done an extremely solid job of upgrading certain parts of their roster during the 2022 offseason. They added safety Marcus Williams, offensive tackle Morgan Moses and defensive lineman Michael Pierce while also bringing back fullback Patrick Ricard, inside linebacker Josh Bynes and defensive lineman Calais Campbell. However, with the 2022 NFL draft coming up there are other areas that Baltimore can shore up with the 10 projected picks that they have.

In his latest full seven-round 2022 mock draft, Josh Edwards of CBS Sports utilized all of the Ravens’ 10 selections to address some of the holes remaining on their roster, including in the trenches. Edwards goes very offensive line and defensive line heavy on the first two days of the draft, starting off with University of Northern Iowa offensive lineman Trevor Penning at No. 14. Edwards explains that there has been buzz that Penning won’t make it past Baltimore’s selection.

“Baltimore traded away Orlando Brown Jr., and Ronnie Stanley has battled injuries of late. Considering the ground game is the foundation of the Ravens offense, the franchise would be wise to invest in the position and have some options down the road. There is a lot of buzz that the Northern Iowa product is not going to make it beyond this pick.”

Penning is a very powerful player, but many view him as a trade-back candidate for the Ravens due to his lack of refined technique that could be a problem at the next level. He’s still a first-round prospect, but he might not be one that the team considers if they make a selection at No. 14.

On day two of the draft in the second and third rounds, Edwards selects Connecticut defensive lineman Travis Jones at No. 45, Oklahoma edge rusher Nik Bonnito at No. 76, and UCLA offensive lineman Sean Rhyan at No.100.

Day three of Edwards’ draft has Baltimore filling out the rest of their needs, starting in the fourth round where the team selected cornerback Martin Emerson out of Mississippi State at No. 110, Mississippi State wide receiver Makai Polk at No. 117, tight end Charlie Kolar out of Iowa State at No. 128, cornerback Alontae Taylor out of Tennesee at No. 139, and BYU running back Tyler Allgeier at No. 141. Finally, with the 196th overall pick the Ravens round out their draft with inside linebacker Jeremiah Gemmel out of North Carolina.

Positionally, Edwards valued the trenches early while filling out the rest of the draft with other needs. Emerson and Taylor make for a nice mid-round cornerback duo, while Kolar, Allgeier and Gemmel represent smaller needs with good value in the later portion of the draft.

The players selected by Edwards would also give the Ravens some flexibility for other free agent signings after the draft. Edwards only selects on edge rusher for Baltimore, so a potential free agent such as Jadeveon Clowney could be in the cards for this scenario.

7-Round mock draft 4.0: Vikings make pass rush central focus

The Vikings add even more firepower to their defensive front this week

These mock drafts have been a really fun exercise in trying to figure out what options the Vikings have in April. This one is going to focus on two elements: a realistic trade down in gaining a second-round pick and fortifying the edge group.

Fortifying edge is an interesting proposition. The Vikings just restructured Danielle Hunter and signed Za’Darius Smith, but from a long-term perspective, there are still question marks. Answering those questions in a deep edge class with two of the best to learn from should be considered a high and likely priority.
