Dolphins sign 8 players to reserve/future contracts after 2023 season

Here’s who’s sticking around from the practice squad.

With the Miami Dolphins 2023 officially coming to a close on Saturday, the restrictions that force teams to keep their active rosters at 53 players are lifted, allowing teams to sign up to 90 players.

Once a team is eliminated from the playoffs, they can sign a number of players to reserve/futures contracts which adds them to the active roster through the spring and summer.

On Monday, the Dolphins signed these eight players from their practice squad to such deals:

Dolphins swap practice squad players, elevated two to the active roster

Miami makes multiple practice squad moves on Saturday.

The Miami Dolphins, prior to their Week 11 battle with the Las Vegas Raiders announced a number of moves regarding their practice squad.

Running back Jake Funk was released from the practice squad. He was signed by Miami last month, but he was never elevated to the active roster. With De’Von Achane coming back from injured reserve, they don’t necessarily need the depth at the position.

To fill his spot, the Dolphins have signed wide receiver Robbie Chosen, who they released from the 53-man roster to make room for Achane.

For the game against the Raiders, the Dolphins have elevated Chosen and offensive lineman Chasen Hines.

This is Chosen’s second elevation this season after being brought up for the Week 3 battle with the Denver Broncos. In that game, he hauled in a long touchdown from backup quarterback Mike White.

This is Hines’ first elevation since joining Miami’s practice squad after roster cuts. He was originally a sixth-round pick of the New England Patriots after a collegiate career at LSU. He hasn’t played a snap in the NFL yet, but during his time at LSU, he started 16 games at right guard and one at left guard.

With the Dolphins starting two backup guards and being without one depth guard in Robert Jones, Hines could be thrust into playing time if Liam Eichenberg or Lester Cotton were to go down.

Report: Two former Patriots offensive linemen sign with new teams

Two recently released Patriots offensive linemen are signing with new teams.

Former New England Patriots offensive guards Bill Murray and Chasen Hines are not returning to the practice squad.

Both players reportedly signed elsewhere and will get a fresh start outside of New England. Hines will be joining the division rival Miami Dolphins’ practice squad, while Murray is jumping ship to the NFC to the Chicago Bears’ practice squad.

Murray signed as an undrafted free agent with New England in 2020. He spent most of his time on the practice squad. Last July, he made a positional change from defensive tackle to offensive guard, which showed a willingness to do whatever it took to help the team.

Hines, on the other hand, was drafted by New England in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. He was placed on injured reserve last October.

The Patriots focused heavily on the offensive line in the 2023 NFL draft, selecting center Jake Andrews, along with guards Sidy Sow and Atonio Mafi. We’ll see if the grass is greener for Murray and Hines to have better luck outside of New England.

Patriots slammed with injuries in first training camp practice in pads

It was a rough day with injuries for the Patriots in their first padded practice on Monday.

The New England Patriots got a taste of real football with their first training camp practice in pads on Monday.

And it wasn’t pretty.

Multiple players suffered injuries during the practice, including Cole Strange, Bill Murray, Jalen Hurd, Scotty Washington, Chasen Hines and Brad Hawkins.

Strange’s injury is especially concerning considering he’s a starter in an offensive line group that’s already banged up. His absence meant the Patriots practiced with both starting guards, including Michael Onwenu, out of the lineup.

The cracks are showing in competitive drills with quarterback Mac Jones constantly being under pressure. It has been even more evident when the field shrinks and the offense is working in the red zone.

Real football means more chances for injuries for a Patriots team that needs to stay healthy just to have a fighting chance in the AFC East division.

Some of the injuries mentioned above might have simply been the result of players being shaken up, but NESN’s Zack Cox also noted Strange was grabbing at his knee in discomfort before being taken to the athletic training shed.

Stay tuned to Patriots Wire as injury updates continue to come in.

63 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 63 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 63 jersey number.

Training camp is only a few weeks away, and the New England Patriots are now just 63 days from their season-opening game.

Football is almost back.

To celebrate the upcoming NFL season, we’re continuing our countdown series by listing every Patriots player that has ever worn the No. 63 jersey. Offensive guard Chasen Hines currently wears the jersey, but there are 19 other players that have worn it at some point in time.

One of the players that come to mind is former guard Joe Andruzzi, who went on to win three Super Bowls with the Patriots. He’s also a former All-Dynasty Team member after spending five seasons in New England.

Oh, and there’s no way we could do this list without remembering Dan Connolly and this legendary play.

Here’s every Patriots player that has worn the No. 63:

Regular season rookie grades for Patriots’ 2022 draft class

How did the Patriots’ rookies do this season? Patriots Wire’s Cam Garrity is handing out end-of-season grades to the 2022 draft class.

As the season comes to a close, there’s a full body of work now to look at just how well the New England Patriots’ 2022 draft class panned out.

Even though it is too early to make determinations on the entire class, we can see the potential of each player and piece together the reasons they were ultimately drafted by the team.

Were they hits or misses in their rookie seasons?

We’ll take a look at multiple things with the players, including their 2022 stats and PFF grade. And then they’ll be receiving a letter grade for the season when taking into account their total body of work.

Midseason rookie grades for Patriots’ 2022 draft class

Grading the 2022 Patriots draft class and their performance after nine games.

The New England Patriots needed their 2022 draft class to have some playmakers and/or role players after a draft lull until 2020.

After nine weeks, it’s still too early to grade the player or selection as developing and adjusting to the NFL game is certainly no easy task.

But we’re going to do it anyway.

Instead of grading the selection and the value, let’s take a look at each player from the draft class and give them a grade for their performance thus far in 2022.

Two Patriots offensive rookies placed on non-football injury list

Two Patriots rookie offensive linemen have been placed on the NFI list ahead of training camp

Two members of the New England Patriots 2022 draft class likely will not be in the fold for the start of training camp. Offensive linemen Chasen Hines and Andrew Stueber have been placed on the non-football injury list.

This list is essentially for players who are not ready to practice and gives them time until they are ready to compete. The pair can come off the list at any time, as noted by NESN’S Kegan Stiefel.

The Patriots focused on the offensive line in the later part of the draft, building on an offensive-minded strategy in the 2022 draft. Hines was selected with 210th overall pick, after starting 35 games for the LSU Tigers. The LSU offensive attack averaged 368.5 yards per contest in 2021

Steuber played in 14 games at tackle for the Michigan Wolverines in 2021. He was a key part of a Michigan running game that recorded 3,001 yards on the season and 39 touchdowns, good for first overall in the Big Ten.

This piece of news is unfortunate, with New England looking to build depth along the line for both now and the future.

Former LSU offensive guard Chasen Hines drafted by Patriots in sixth round

Hines is the ninth former Tiger to be drafted.

The Tigers have now seen five former players picked on Day 3 of the 2022 NFL draft as offensive guard [autotag]Chasen Hines[/autotag] became the latest to come off the board.

He was selected by the New England Patriots in the sixth round with the No. 210 pick, just five picks after his former teammate on the offensive line in [autotag]Austin Deculus[/autotag], who went to the Houston Texans. A veteran and four-year letter-winner for the Tigers, Hines appeared in 35 games with 17 starts.

Of those starts, 16 came at right guard with the other coming at left guard. It seems likely Hines will play on the right side in the NFL, but as a sixth-round pick, he will take the opportunities where they come to him.

Hines has tremendous size for an interior lineman, standing at 6-foot-3 and a whopping 350 pounds. That might not be his NFL playing weight, but it’s certainly a large frame for professional offensive line coaches to work with and makes him an interesting project player.

He’s the second guard the Patriots drafted, joining Chattanooga’s Cole Strange, who they took in the first round. Many saw that pick as a surprising reach, but New England needed help in that area and now have two new intriguing prospects, including a late-round player in Hines that could prove to be a smart pick.

Hines becomes the ninth player to be drafted from LSU so far.

LSU offensive tackle Austin Deculus selected by Houston Texans in sixth round

Deculus was the eighth LSU player selected in the 2022 NFL draft, and he’ll reunite with Derek Stingley Jr.

The run of former LSU players on Day 3 of the 2022 NFL draft continued on Saturday, as offensive tackle [autotag]Austin Deculus[/autotag] was selected by the Houston Texans in the sixth round with the No. 205 pick.

A former four-star recruit and four-year starter with the Tigers, Deculus appeared in 61 games over the course of his career, starting 46 of them. He has excellent size at 6-foot-7 and 325 pounds, and it makes sense why a team like the Texans, which still need some depth pieces along the offensive line, would take a flyer on a player like Deculus.

Houston has now picked two LSU players, with Deculus joining [autotag]Derek Stingley Jr.[/autotag], who was the third overall pick.

LSU has had nine total players drafted, with Deculus being joined by fellow offensive lineman [autotag]Chasen Hines[/autotag] later in the sixth round. This may not have been the strongest Tigers draft class in recent years, but it was certainly deeper than many realized.
