Projecting the Seahawks starting lineup after the 2023 NFL draft

Here is how we project Seattle’s starting lineups on offense, defense and special teams after the draft.

The Seattle Seahawks have added 10 new players via the 2023 NFL draft and have reportedly signed nearly 30 more undrafted free agents. They have also invited a number of other players to participate in their rookie minicamp next weekend. Now seems like an ideal time to evaluate this roster and see where everybody stands with all the new pieces thrown in.

Here is how we project Seattle’s starting lineups on offense, defense and special teams after the draft.

2023 NFL draft: Seahawks rank second in total draft capital

Here is how top 10 teams rank in regards to their total draft pick value according to Tankathon.

The Seahawks are set up for success in 2023 as well as any team in the NFL. Not only did they manage to sneak into the playoffs this year, but they also have the second-most total draft capital in the league thanks to the Russell Wilson trade and his subsequent implosion in Denver.

Seahawks land Oregon DE Kayvon Thibodeaux in this ESPN 2022 mock draft

In a new 2022 mock draft from Todd McShay at ESPN, Seattle uses that pick on Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux.

So, the Seattle Seahawks are trading their franchise quarterback and thinking about replacing him with a creep. They’re also releasing their legendary future Hall of Fame middle linebacker Bobby Wagner and likely beginning a total rebuild. On the bright side, at least they have a lot more draft capital today than they did yesterday before the Russell Wilson-to-Denver deal was announced.

Now armed with eight selections – including the No. 9 overall pick from the Broncos – the Seahawks are in position to land a real difference-maker in the first round for the first time in several years. In a new 2022 mock draft from Todd McShay at ESPN, Seattle uses that pick on Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, one of the top-two edge rusher prospects in this class.

“I’ve mentioned that I still want to see a little more fire out of him on a down-to-down basis, and that’s still true. But there’s no doubt he has the talent to be a difference-maker on an NFL defense. And Seattle’s unit could use that: Its 34 sacks tied for No. 22 last season, while its 38.7% pass rush win rate ranked No. 20. Thibodeaux, who had seven sacks and 46 pressures last season, gets a new era of Seahawks football rolling.”

Thibodeaux is usually going higher than No. 9 in most mock drafts and we’d be surprised if he’s still on the board at that point. However, crazier things have happened in the draft. If Thibodeaux is available, picking him should be an easy call – unless Malik Willis is there.

ESPN names L.J. Collier as Seahawks player most in need of a change of scenery

Collier is just 26 and has one year left on his contract.

The Seahawks have made a habit of whiffing on their first-round picks in recent years. While there are exceptions like Jordyn Brooks, more often than not those selections have been used on players that have not panned out in the NFL, at least not yet.

One example is defensive end L.J. Collier, Seattle’s choice in the first round of the 2019 draft. Collier showed some potential during the 2020 campaign, posting three sacks, seven quarterback hits and 17 pressures. However, he fell out of the rotation this past season and the team reportedly tried to shop him around the trade deadline but got no takers. Collier was only on the field for 218 defensive snaps, 30% of the team’s total.

Heading into 2022, ESPN has named Collier as the one Seahawks player who could most use a change of scenery.

“The 29th pick of the 2019 draft was a healthy scratch in seven of the first 10 games of last season as Seattle went with bigger bodies in the middle of its new-look defensive line. If the Seahawks stick with that in 2022, then they might again view Collier as too small to play inside and not twitchy enough to play on the edge.”

Collier is just 26 and has one year left on his contract.

TEAM NEEDS

Defensive Line

It’s easy to point the Seahawks needing just an edge rusher with Jadeveon Clowney’s decision still looming, but they need defensive tackle help, too. Seattle finished 29th in sacks, 29th in quarterback hits and 26th in pressures last season.

Wide Receiver

The Seahawks hit a home run with D.K. Metcalf in last year’s draft, and while they have him along with Tyler Lockett, Seattle could afford to add a game-changing receiver to compliment them.

Offensive Tackle

With the losses of Germain Ifedi and George Fant, there is a gaping hole at right tackle. The Seahawks acquired Brandon Shell, but he only offers low-end starting value. Seattle could afford to find the successor to Duane Brown, as well.
