All-WCC guard Adama Bal announces decision to test 2024 NBA draft

Santa Clara junior Adama Bal announced that he will declare for the 2024 NBA draft while maintaining his remaining college eligibility.

Santa Clara junior guard Adama Bal announced this week on social media that he will declare for the 2024 NBA draft while maintaining his remaining college eligibility.

Bal, who was born in France, was named to the All-WCC first team after averaging 14.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists on 35.4% shooting from 3-point range in 30 games. He registered nine 20-point games, including a season-high 28 points on Jan. 6 in a win over Pepperdine.

The 6-foot-7 standout took advantage of his increased role with the Broncos after playing sparingly at Arizona. He started every game for the first time and ranked seventh in the conference in scoring and eighth in assists per game.

Bal began the year considered a first-round pick but his stock dropped after an inconsistent year. He is projected to be a possible second-round pick, likely a key reason why the decision was made to test the pre-draft process instead of signing with an agent.

The 20-year-old is highly touted for creating for himself and getting others involved. He has had some crafty finishes at the rim and can finish through contact. He will need to improve as a shooter, but he has offered glimpses of what he can bring to the next level.

Bal will have the opportunity to improve his draft positioning in team interviews and workouts during the pre-draft process. He could also be invited to compete in the G League Elite Camp or draft combine next month in Chicago, Illinois.

He has until May 29 to withdraw from the draft and return to school.

What we learned after Ohio State’s Emerald Coast Classic championship win over Santa Clara

The Buckeye basketball team had a very impressive two night stretch

Not many expected the Ohio State men’s basketball team to advance to the Emerald Coast Classic championship game, but since they were there, they might as well win it.

The Buckeyes defeated Santa Clara 86-56 to cap a two-day run where the team played some of its best basketball of the young season. The win improves Ohio State’s record to 5-1 on the year, and the Buckeyes could very well see themselves ranked after this weekend’s action. They have earned it.

We learned plenty about the Buckeyes after this weekend and here are my biggest takeaways after two great nights of Ohio State basketball.

LSU basketball lands Santa Clara transfer guard, Baton Rouge native Carlos Stewart

The Tigers acquired their fourth transfer portal addition on Tuesday.

Coach [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] continues his rebuild of this LSU roster through the transfer portal heading into his second season.

On Tuesday, the Tigers secured the commitment of Santa Clara guard [autotag]Carlos Stewart[/autotag], a Baton Rouge native who attended The Dunham School. After seeing sparing time as a backup during his true freshman season in 2021-22, Stewart started all 33 games he played in for the Broncos this past season.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound rising junior averaged 15.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists during the 2022-23 season, earning First Team All-WCC honors in the process.

“This is a great day to welcome Carlos Stewart home to Baton Rouge, Louisiana,” McMahon said in a release. “We love his explosive scoring ability at the guard position, his competitive spirit, and his passion for LSU. With his 6-7 wingspan and his motor, he will also impact our team on the defensive end of the court. I am looking forward to coaching Carlos at LSU.”

Stewart becomes the fourth player to join the Tigers in the transfer portal this offseason along with Vanderbilt’s [autotag]Jordan Wright[/autotag] (another Batonn Rouge native), Tulane’s [autotag]Jalen Cook[/autotag] (who returns after beginning his career at LSU) and Nevada’s [autotag]Will Baker[/autotag].

Rebuilding through the portal was once again a big need as the Tigers saw seven players opt to transfer following the conclusion of the season. Additions like this will be important if McMahon hopes to improve upon a disastrous Year 1 at LSU.

Santa Clara transfer Trey Wertz includes Ohio State in final seven schools

The Ohio State basketball team is a part of the final seven schools Santa Clara transfer Trey Wertz announced Friday.

The Ohio State basketball team appears to be in the running for another transfer. Santa Clara guard Trey Wertz recently included the Buckeyes in a more expanded list, but now has them in his final seven schools as he continues to cull the list down.

With the Broncos, the 6-foot, 4-inch guard averaged 11.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per contest in 2019-2020. He shot 48.9 percent from the floor overall and averaged 28.6 minutes per game. He also bombed away from beyond the arc at a clip of 40 percent.

There has always been the question of whether OSU would have a scholarship for any more players immediately, but with the recent news of Kaleb Wesson declaring for the NBA draft, it appears as though a scholarship may be available now, even with Wertz having to sit out a year because of the NCAA’s undergraduate transfer rules.

There does not appear to be a firm timetable for a decision from Wertz, but he does seem to be going through the process rather quickly. We’ll stay on top of any further news that becomes available.

The other six teams Wertz included in his final seven include North Carolina, Notre Dame, Virginia, Arizona, Oklahoma, and Butler.
