Saint Mary’s vs Santa Clara Game Preview, West Coast Conference Tournament

Why Saint Mary’s Will Win

The last time we saw Saint Mary’s it was busy dominating Gonzaga in a shocking 67-57 win to finish off a four-game winning streak coming into the tournament.

It showed off why it has one of the nation’s best defenses – teams are averaging jut 59 points per game against this group – it didn’t buckle under the pressure of the moment as the game went on, and it moved the ball around better than anyone has against the Bulldog D.

Santa Clara doesn’t have a big-time defense, it doesn’t force mistakes, and  there’s a problem on the boards, especially on the offensive end.

However …

Why Santa Clara Will Win

There’s a reason the Broncos don’t come up with a whole lot of offensive rebounds – they don’t miss.

They move the ball around phenomenally well and generate easy shot after was shot. They don’t do a ton from three, but when they do, good things happen.

They’re sixth in the nation averring 49% from the field, and that showed in the 77-72 win over Saint Mary’s in early February – it hit 56% of its shots.

It lost the first time around 73-65, but it still did a nice job on the boards, and kept the pressure on. In the rubber match …

Saint Mary’s vs Santa Clara: What’s Going To Happen

Don’t expect this to be too crazy of a shootout.

Santa Clara rolled Portland for 193 points in back-to-back games coming into this, and it’s been on a bender with 84 or more in five of its last six games.

The Broncos are coming in on a roll, and Saint Mary’s is coming in on fresh legs after a week off. Santa Clara will get up early, the Gael defense will clamp down starting late in the first half, and the grind of a second half will set up a rematch against Gonzaga for the conference title.

Gonzaga vs Santa Clara Game Preview

Why Santa Clara Will Win

The Broncos can score.

They might not put up a ton of threes, but they’re great on the inside, they hit their free throws, and they’re among the best teams in the country from the field hitting 49% of their shots.

They’ve made half of their shots or more in six of the last nine games, and that’s the norm.

They move the ball around extremely well, they don’t get hit with a ton of fouls – at least normally they don’t; that’s been a slight problem lately – and …

Why Gonzaga Will Win

Yeah, Santa Clara can score. It put up 83 on Gonzaga in the first meeting in the middle of January, and it still got rocked.

Gonzaga put up 115.

It took a little while to get things going and settle in against Pepperdine in the 86-66 win a few nights ago, but even with the threes not falling there wasn’t that much of a problem.

Santa Clara is bad at guarding the three, it’s allowing just about everyone to push into the high-40s percentage-wise from the field, and even though overall it’s not bad when it comes to fouling, it’s been allowing teams to get to the free throw line way too easily.

And now Gonzaga is back home.

What’s Going To Happen

Really, really bad things happen when teams come into McCarthey Athletic Center.

Santa Clara has a nice mix of scoring punch, balance, and passing ability to keep up and make Gonzaga keep rolling, but it won’t be nearly enough.

The Bulldogs will get up fast, settle in, and burst again in the second half with a good mix of offensive firepower.

Saint Mary’s vs Santa Clara Game Preview

Why Saint Mary’s Will Win

This might not be the move high-powered Saint Mary’s team, but it’s been red hot from three lately – pushing past 45% over the last three games after hitting half the outside shots against Loyola Marymount – and Santa Clara hasn’t been great lately at stopping the bombers.

If the Gaels can do anything from three and get on the defensive glass, they should be fine. Santa Clara doesn’t come up with enough second chance points with the 13 offensive rebounds against San Diego in a win a few days ago a total aberration. However …

Why Santa Clara Will Win

The Broncos are hot.

They’ve made a nice push winning three straight and five of its last six by seemingly making everything from the field, doing a decent job from the outside, and making lots and lots of free throws.

Patience is the key. The Saint Mary’s defense is terrific and forces a whole lot of turnovers, but Santa Clara doesn’t make a whole bunch of mistakes and is fantastic at coming up with the extra pass.

The Broncos are 16-1 when they can make 45% from the field, and they’ll get their share of inside points. However …

What’s Going To Happen

The Saint Mary’s defense should be able to clamp down a bit. It has only allowed six teams to hit 45% or better from the field, and it’s not going to allow Santa Clara to get hot from the outside.

The Gaels won 73-65 in late January by getting up in the first half and holding on. They did a better job of getting to the free throw line, and that’s how they’re going to get out of this alive.

It’ll be a fun, tight battle worth staying up for.

Santa Clara transfer Trey Wertz includes Ohio State in final seven schools

The Ohio State basketball team is a part of the final seven schools Santa Clara transfer Trey Wertz announced Friday.

The Ohio State basketball team appears to be in the running for another transfer. Santa Clara guard Trey Wertz recently included the Buckeyes in a more expanded list, but now has them in his final seven schools as he continues to cull the list down.

With the Broncos, the 6-foot, 4-inch guard averaged 11.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per contest in 2019-2020. He shot 48.9 percent from the floor overall and averaged 28.6 minutes per game. He also bombed away from beyond the arc at a clip of 40 percent.

There has always been the question of whether OSU would have a scholarship for any more players immediately, but with the recent news of Kaleb Wesson declaring for the NBA draft, it appears as though a scholarship may be available now, even with Wertz having to sit out a year because of the NCAA’s undergraduate transfer rules.

There does not appear to be a firm timetable for a decision from Wertz, but he does seem to be going through the process rather quickly. We’ll stay on top of any further news that becomes available.

The other six teams Wertz included in his final seven include North Carolina, Notre Dame, Virginia, Arizona, Oklahoma, and Butler.
