UCLA at San Diego State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UCLA at San Diego State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The UCLA Bruins (1-0) will travel to take on the San Diego State Aztecs (2-0) on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (CBS). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the UCLA vs. San Diego State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Bruins beat Coastal Carolina in Week 1 27-13, failing to cover as 15.5-point home favorites. UCLA registered 421 total yards of offense against Coastal Carolina, but it had 8 penalties that coach Chip Kelly will want to clean up.

The Aztecs followed  a 20-13 win over Ohio with a 36-28 win over Idaho State as 34-point home favorites. San Diego State produced 305 rushing yards against Idaho State, led by QB Jalen Mayden, who had 132 rushing yards and 2 TDs.

UCLA at San Diego State picks and predictions

Prediction

UCLA 38, San Diego State 17

Moneyline

While the Bruins should come away with their 2nd straight win, I’ll PASS on their moneyline. Betting on a team at -650 odds isn’t worth the risk, especially with the minimal return you’ll receive if UCLA wins.

Against the spread

UCLA -14.5 (-110) is the pick in this contest as the Aztecs lean on their ground game, while the Bruins have a formidable run defense. The Bruins allowed only 133.5 rushing yards per game in 2022 and they surrendered only 56 rushing yards in Week 1 against Coastal Carolina.

Meanwhile, UCLA should have a much better offense than Idaho State and Ohio, which are the 2 teams that San Diego State has played thus far.

Over/Under

OVER 48.5 (-115) is how I’d bet on the total as UCLA should be able to score a decent amount of points on San Diego State’s mediocre defense. The Bruins were 10-3 to the Over in 2022 and the Aztecs will score enough points to help the Over hit in Saturday’s matchup.

Ohio at San Diego State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Ohio at San Diego State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Ohio Bobcats and the San Diego State Aztecs meet Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Ohio at San Diego State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Bobcats head into the 2023 season with high hopes, and they’re one of the favorites in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Ohio’s hopes are likely pinned on the play of QB Kurtis Rourke, who is making his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament late in the 2022 season. He is slated to start the opener, which is tremendous news for the Bobcats. RB Sieh Bangura and WR Sam Wiglusz are back for a high-octane offense, too.

The Aztecs aren’t picked to be among the top teams in the Mountain West. In fact, they’ll likely be middle of the pack. However, QB Jalen Mayden was a find last season, and he’ll be the focal point of the offense, as he can run and pass. He might need to do more running with leading receiver Tyrell Shavers no longer in SoCal. The San Diego State defense will be nasty once again.

These teams have met just once before, with Ohio coming away with a 27-0 win in the DXL Frisco Bowl on Dec. 19, 2018.

Ohio at San Diego State odds

Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Friday at 7:36 p.m. ET.

  • Moneyline (ML): Ohio +120 (bet $100 to win $120) | San Diego State -145 (bet $145 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Ohio +2.5 (-105) | San Diego State -2.5 (-115)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 48.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Ohio at San Diego State picks and predictions

Prediction

San Diego State 19, Ohio 16

Moneyline

It’s tempting to go with the MAC visitors, as Ohio (+120) has the potential to be a 9- or 10-win team this season. But SAN DIEGO STATE (-145) is home, and Mayden is likely to give the defense fits. In turn, I am not sold on Rourke being 100% after an ACL injury late in the 2022 season. Facing the nasty Aztecs D is not an easy assignment.

Against the spread

SAN DIEGO STATE -2.5 (-110) is worth a look, but go lightly. This won’t be a lopsided game by any stretch, as that’s just not the Aztecs’ game. They do it with defense. They do it with careful offense. And they rag the clock. It’s the Aztecs way.

Over/Under

UNDER 48.5 (-110) is the best play on the board, and it’s not even close. I’d go low all the way down to 45.5, that’s how confident I am.

Rourke is likely to take very few chances early on, and he is likely to struggle against a very difficult Aztecs defense. Ohio brings a solid defensive unit to the game, too, and Mayden will take some time to find a new top target with Shavers no longer there.

March Madness: San Diego State vs. UConn odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s San Diego State vs. UConn odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The 5th-seeded San Diego State Aztecs (32-6) and No. 4 UConn Huskies (30-8) clash in Monday’s NCAA Tournament Championship Game. The battle at NRG Stadium in Houston will tip off at 9:20 p.m. ET (CBS). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the San Diego State vs. UConn odds as we make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

San Diego State has logged final-minutes comebacks and 1-point victories in each of its last 2 games. The No. 18 team in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll has been struggling at the free-throw line (60% last 3 games, hitting 30 of 50), which has not helped the effort. But the defensive-minded Mountain West Conference-champion Aztecs have prevailed under pressure, and they head into Monday night’s championship tilt having won 9 in a row and 15 of their last 16.

UConn — ranked No. 12 in the Coaches Poll — also plays solid defense, but the Huskies sport a highly-efficient team at the offensive end as well. In this tournament, Connecticut is shooting 49.5% from the field (148 of 299) and 40.3% from 3-point range (50 of 124) on a high-volume 24.8 attempts per game. The Huskies have also logged 13-or-more offensive rebounds and had 20 assists or more in 3 of their 5 tourney games.

San Diego State vs. UConn picks and predictions

Prediction

UConn 66, San Diego State 64

[pickup_prop id=”32909″]

Moneyline

The Aztecs (+280) have the defense and impressive senior leadership to take this run one more step. A tag of +300 or higher would make for some acceptable leverage; otherwise. PASS.

Against the spread

UConn is reliant on 3-balls, but San Diego State owns the nation’s 3rd-best figure in defending shots from beyond the arc (28.2%, according to NCAA.com). Look for the Aztecs to hold their own with the strong rebounding Huskies and to perhaps have a key edge in turnovers.

Peg this one coming down to the final minutes with San Diego State within 5. There is value in the AZTECS +7.5 (-110).

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

These teams play at a slightly-slower-than-average pace (and UConn has been trending slower still). The Under is 8-1 in the Aztecs last 9 games against teams playing .600 ball; it’s 9-1 in SDSU’s last 10 games overall.

With San Diego State being an elite perimeter defense and not a lot of free throws expected in this matchup, a combined score in the 120s is a distinct possibility.

Under 132.5 (-110) is a lean here but no more unless the line climbs to 133.5 or higher. PASS.

March Madness: FAU vs. San Diego State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s FAU vs. San Diego State odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The 9th-seeded Florida Atlantic Owls (35-3) and No. 5 San Diego State Aztecs (31-6) clash in a national semifinal Saturday in Houston. The battle at NRG Stadium will tip off at 6:09 p.m. ET (CBS). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the FAU vs. San Diego State odds as we make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

FAU is No. 25 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. The Owls have advanced to the Final Four with 4 wins. Two of those — against Memphis and No. 13 Kansas State — were by a combined 4 points. The Conference USA champs tote an 11-game win streak into this game.

The 18th-ranked Aztecs are a defensive-minded team on a roll. Across 3 Mountain West Conference Tournament wins and 4 NCAA Tournament triumphs, San Diego State have held opponents to 56.6 points per game on a shooting mark of 35.2%.

FAU vs. San Diego State picks and predictions

Prediction

San Diego State 69, FAU 65

Moneyline

The Aztecs have played a much tougher slate this season, and a breakdown of their schedule reveals their they have played an offense-skewed collection of opponents. And that speaks even more highly of SDSU’s tenacious defense.

Peg the Owls as being over-reliant on 3s, and in this one they are up against an SDSU team that ranks 2nd in the nation in defending the perimeter (27.8%).

The Aztecs’ offensive rebounding has been stronger over recent weeks. They figure to get to the line more in this matchup, and they are worthy of a probability number of 60% or perhaps a click higher.

BACK SAN DIEGO STATE (-145).

Against the spread

SDSU has won 6 straight ATS. But peg the Moneyline offering slightly better value here. PASS, unless the price on -2.5 falls below -110.

Over/Under

This matchup features slow-tempo San Diego State and mid-paced FAU. Both teams have been quite efficient on defense. And this number reflects all of that. AVOID.

March Madness: Creighton vs. San Diego State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Creighton vs. San Diego State odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Creighton Bluejays (24-12) battle the San Diego State Aztecs (30-6) Sunday. Tip from the KFC Yum! Center in the Elite 8 is set for 2:20 p.m. ET (CBS). Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Creighton vs. San Diego State odds as we make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

Check out: USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

The Bluejays are 3-0 against the spread (ATS) in the NCAA Tournament and 4-1 ATS in postseason play. They are 3-2 O/U. Creighton, the No. 6 seed in the South Region, has beaten No. 11 NC State 72-63 as a 5.5-point favorite, No. 3 Baylor 85-76 as a 1.5-point favorite and No. 15 Princeton 86-75 as a 10-point favorite.

San Diego State, the No. 5 seed in the region, is 5-1 ATS in their 6 postseason games and 4-0 ATS in tournament games. Despite being down almost double figures in the second half, the Aztecs clawed back to knock off No. 1 overall seed Alabama 71-64 on Friday, covering as a 6.5-point underdog. They beat No. 13 Furman 75-52 and No. 12 Charleston, covering as a 4.5-point and 5.5-point favorite. T

Creighton vs. San Diego State picks and predictions

Prediction

San Diego State 66, Creighton 63

Moneyline

BET SAN DIEGO STATE (+115).

San Diego State held Alabama’s No. 3-rated Kenpom offense to just 64 points. Projected top-5 pick F Brandon Miller was 3 for 19 from the field.

The Aztecs have a swarming defense that ranks 4th in the nation. Creighton’s strength is offense, not defense, and it allowed 43 points to Princeton in the 1st half. It will have a much more difficult time scoring.

The Aztecs rank 3rd in the nation in opponents’ 3-point FG percentage. They will be able to lock down Creighton, and given that they scored 71 on Alabama, which ranks 3rd in adjusted defensive rating, they should be able to score as well.

Ultimately, back SAN DIEGO STATE (+115).

Against the spread

PASS.

San Diego State is athletic and can defend at a high level. It has the ability to cover and could win outright. I’d rather take it to win outright given the plus-money odds.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 134.5 (-108).

Creighton and San Diego State both play slowly. The Bluejays sit 139th in the nation in adjusted tempo while San Diego State ranks 255th. Neither team will want to push the pace. Creighton has gone Under in 2 of its last 4 games while San Diego State is 0-6 O/U in its last 6 games.

The Aztecs have actually gone Under in their last 11 games and in 13 of their last 14. Given the pace and defensive expertise, back the UNDER 134.5 (-108).

The San Diego State Aztecs (29-6) battle the Alabama Crimson Tide (31-5) Friday in a Sweet 16 battle at KFC Yum! Center . Tip in Loisville is set for 6:30 p.m. ET (TBS). Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the San Diego State vs. Alabama odds as we make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

Check out: USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

The Crimson Tide, the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, didn’t cover a 24-point spread in beating No. 16 Texas A&M-CC 96-75 in the 1st round. Alabama then buried Maryland 73-51 and covered as an 8-point favorite. The Tide is is 4-1 against the spread (ATS) in its 5 postseason games and 1-4 O/U in those battles.

The 5th-seeded Aztecs took down No. 11 Charleston 63-57, covering a 5.5-spread on a last-second foul shot, and then beat 12-seed Furman 75-52 as a 4.5-point favorite. San Diego State is 4-1 ATS in its 5 postseason games and 0-5 O/U. Its strength is defense, ranking 6th in the nation in Kenpom’s adjusted defensive rating metric.

San Diego State vs. Alabama picks and predictions

Prediction

Alabama 70, San Diego State 64

Moneyline

PASS.

I don’t hate a sprinkle on SDSU (+270) given the value, but the Crimson Tide have shown few flaws and likely made that moneyline value for the No. 5 seed not as good as it seems.

Against the spread

LEAN SAN DIEGO STATE +7.5 (-110).

The Aztecs have covered 4 straight games and won 12 of their last 13.

While SDSU didn’t have many quality non-conference wins, it has dominated its competition in tournament play. Its defense has been on full display, holding its opponent to under 60 in 4 straight postseason games.

Alabama’s strength is also defense, although they rank 18th in adjusted offensive rating. Both teams being strong on the defensive end should result in neither team really pulling away. The Crimson Tide are just 6-8-1 ATS in non-conference play this season as well.

Given the strengths for both teams and the Aztecs likely being a strong public fade, back SAN DIEGO STATE +7.5 (-110).

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

BET UNDER 137.5 (-110).

Both teams rank in the top-6 defenses in adjusted defensive rating per Kenpom.

One concern is Alabama’s tempo, but it has played teams like Mississippi State and Missouri in postseason play, both ranking outside the top 100 in adjusted tempo, and both games went Under the projected total.

SDSU ranks 263rd in tempo, so it won’t up the pace in this game. Alabama has gone Under in 4 of its last 5 while SDSU had gone Under in 10 straight games. Back the UNDER 137.5 (-110).

SAN DIEGO STATE +7.5 (-110) vs. Alabama – 6:30 p.m. ET.

The 5th-seeded Aztecs — the No. 18 team in the nation — are the champions of the Mountain West Conference. San Diego State has defeated 12-seed Charleston and 13-seed Furman this far in this tournament. It is 12-1 since the beginning of February.

Top-seeded and 2nd-ranked-nationally Alabama presents a different challenge for SDSU. The Aztecs have played 3 other KenPom top-20 teams this season. They registered losses by 17 points to Arizona (Nov. 22), 4 to Arkansas (Nov. 23) and 7 to Saint Mary’s (Dec. 10).

But this is a live underdog. San Diego State is likely due some shooting regression on offense, but its defense is tremendous. Over their last 13 games, the Aztecs have held opponents to 57.5 points per game on a 37.7% mark from the floor.

Alabama is the much younger team in this matchup. The Crimson Tide can be a bit inconsistent, and they often rely a great deal on a significant home-court edge.

Both of these teams defend the perimeter at elite levels. But that should affect Alabama’s offense — one that relies on triples to a great degree — much more than SDSU’s.

Then there is the pace of this matchup, with the Tide playing the rabbit and the Aztecs playing the turtle. Of its last 8 against-the-spread losses, 6 games were against slow-tempo foes.

This game going into the final minute would not be a surprise, and some bettors may want to pair the ATS play with some moneyline (SAN DIEGO STATE +260) action.

Sweet 16 first look: San Diego State vs. Alabama odds, lines and trends

Looking at Friday’s San Diego State vs. Alabama Sweet 16 odds, lines and trends. Here’s what you need to know.

The 5th-seeded San Diego State Aztecs (29-6) will battle the No. 1 seed Alabama Crimson Tide (31-5) in the Sweet 16 of the South Region Friday. Tip from KFC Yum! Center is set for 6:30 p.m. ET (TBS). Below, we look at San Diego State vs. Alabama odds from Tipico Sportsbook. Plus, check out our expert college basketball picks and predictions.

San Diego State cemented its spot in the Sweet 16 with a convincing 75-52 win over 13-seed Furman on Saturday to cover as a 4.5-point favorite. Four  players scored in double digits led by G Micah Parrish who had 16 points. The Aztecs took down upset-favorite Charleston 63-57 in the first round as  5.5-point favorites on Thursday.

San Diego State is an impressive 4-1 against the spread (ATS) in its last 5 postseason games — 2 in the NCAA Tournament and 3 in the Mountain West Tournament — with the Under hitting in each of the 5 games.

Alabama took down Maryland on Saturday 73-51 to cover as an 8-point favorite. While it started slow, only scoring 28 points at the half, it put up 45 in the 2nd half to pull away. The Crimson Tide were led with 21 points from G Jahvon Quinerly and 19 from F Brandon Miller, a massive turnaround from his 0-point showing as the Tide steamrolled 16-seed Texas A&M-CC 96-75, but failed to cover as 24-point favorites.

The Crimson Tide are 4-1 ATS in their postseason play thus far with the Under hitting in 4 out of 5 games.

San Diego State vs. Alabama head-to-head

Friday will be the 1st meeting on the court between Alabama and San Diego State.

San Diego State has made the tournament 8 times since 2010, the last time in 2018 when it was knocked off in the 1st round as an 11-seed. The Aztecs  advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2011 as a 2-seed and in 2014 as a 4-seed before being eliminated both times. They have never advanced past the Sweet 16.

This is Alabama’s 1st NCAA Tournament appearance since 2018 when it was eliminated in the 2nd round as a 9-seed. It is only the Tide’s 8th tournament appearance since 2002 and it is the No. 1 overall seed for the 1st time. Alabama advanced to the Elite Eight in 2004 as an 8-seed, but have not made it past the 2nd round since.

March Madness: Furman vs. San Diego State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Furman vs. San Diego St. odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions & best bets.

The 13th-seeded Furman Paladins (28-7) and 5th-seeded San Diego State Aztecs (28-6) square off Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Tip from Amway Center in Orlando is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. ET (CBS). Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Furman vs. San Diego State odds as we make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

Furman ruined a lot of brackets with a 68-67 victory over 4th-seeded Virginia in the opening round.

It’s interesting, too, as the Paladins had a high-octane offense during the regular season, but they picked up the win by playing at the tempo and pace of the Cavaliers. Furman didn’t kill it offensively, hitting just 39% from the field (22 of 56) and getting outrebounded by 8 (39-31).

However, Furman wasn’t a great 3-point shooting team this season but connected at a 36% pace (10 of 28) and it held UVA to just 17% from distance (2 of 12).

F Jalen Slawson went for 19 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists, while G Marcus Foster chimed in with 14 points — including four 3-pointers — and a pair of blocked shots.

San Diego State plays a very similar style to Virginia, so Furman won’t have to alter its preparations much. The Aztecs have locked it down on defense lately, allowing just 54.8 points per game across its last 5 outings while giving up 61 or fewer points in each. The Under is on a 9-0 run for SDSU.

San Diego State scored just 63 points in its opening-round victory over Charleston, and only G Matt Bradley finished with a double-digit point total (17). The Aztecs turned it over 14 times and will need to be much more careful against an opportunistic Paladins team.

Furman vs. San Diego State picks and predictions

Prediction

Furman 71, San Diego State 68

Moneyline

FURMAN (+200) is worth a look for a chance to double up your initial wager.

The Paladins didn’t play a perfect game in the first game and still got it done. The same holds true for an Aztecs squad that was dismal on offense but played very good defense.

It’s going to be a grind, but the Paladins will ride off to the Sweet 16.

Against the spread

Take FURMAN +5.5 (-110) with the points, if you just don’t believe in it straight up.

The Paladins are 4-1 ATS in the past 5 games overall, including their outright win over Virginia, and are 10-1 ATS in the past 11 games against teams with a winning overall record.

Over/Under

The OVER 137.5 (-108) is the lean, and that will be a rarity in an Aztecs game. The Under has cashed in 9 in a row for SDSU and 13 of its last 16 games.

However, Furman likes to run and will look to get the game speed up despite that San Diego State will try to slow it to a crawl. The Over has cashed in 4 of the past 5 games for Furman, and it’s worth playing lightly.

March Madness: Charleston vs. San Diego State odds, picks and predictions

The 12-seed Charleston Cougars (31-3) face the 5-seed San Diego State Aztecs (27-6) Thursday in a first round South Region game in the NCAA Tournament. Tip-off from Amway Center in Orlando is scheduled for approximately 3:10 p.m. ET (truTV). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Charleston vs. San Diego State odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The Cougars spent time in the Top 25 rankings at points during the regular season, and this team won the Colonial Athletic Association tournament. Charleston has ripped off 10 straight wins since Feb. 2.

[afflinkbutton text=”Watch San Diego State vs Charleston” link=”https://sling-tv.pxf.io/KjKy3A”]

A lot of detractors of the Cougars look to a weak strength of schedule (SOS), as Charleston’s best win was against Kent State, its only win over a team in the NCAA Tournament field.

On the flip side, San Diego State picked up a win over an NCAA Tournament team in the Mountain West title game, topping Utah State 62-57. The Aztecs have 5 victories over NCAA Tournament teams, while playing Arkansas tough in an OT loss.

Charleston vs. San Diego State picks and predictions

Prediction

San Diego State 72, Charleston 68

Moneyline

San Diego State (-220) is a little on the expensive side, costing bettors more than 2 times the potential return. Charleston (+190) was able to win 31 games, and many bettors like the Cougars because of the 12-5 upset rule. In the NCAA Tournament, we’ve had a lot of 12-seed teams take down the 5-seed in recent years.

PASS.

Stream select live college basketball games and full replays: Get ESPN+

Against the spread

CHARLESTON +5.5 (-115) is worth a look, as the Cougars have the offense to hang with most anyone in the country. The Cougars racked up 81.7 PPG during the regular season while hitting 73.9% from the free-throw line. That’ll keep them in the game all the way.

I believe in the overall body of work of the San Diego State -5.5 (-105), however, and the Aztecs will survive and advance. In the end, the Aztecs have a tremendous defense, and will lock it down when it counts.

Over/Under

UNDER 141.5 (-110) is the lean, but go lightly, with a half-unit at best.

The Under is 3-0-1 in the last 4 games overall for the Cougars, as Charleston’s defense has been pretty good lately, too. Charleston has allowed 58 or fewer points in 3 of the last 4 outings.

San Diego State has hit the Under in 8 in a row, and it has allowed just 56.9 PPG across the impressive 8-game span.
