The 13th-seeded Furman Paladins (28-7) and 5th-seeded San Diego State Aztecs (28-6) square off Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Tip from Amway Center in Orlando is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. ET (CBS). Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Furman vs. San Diego State odds as we make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

Furman ruined a lot of brackets with a 68-67 victory over 4th-seeded Virginia in the opening round.

It’s interesting, too, as the Paladins had a high-octane offense during the regular season, but they picked up the win by playing at the tempo and pace of the Cavaliers. Furman didn’t kill it offensively, hitting just 39% from the field (22 of 56) and getting outrebounded by 8 (39-31).

However, Furman wasn’t a great 3-point shooting team this season but connected at a 36% pace (10 of 28) and it held UVA to just 17% from distance (2 of 12).

F Jalen Slawson went for 19 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists, while G Marcus Foster chimed in with 14 points — including four 3-pointers — and a pair of blocked shots.

San Diego State plays a very similar style to Virginia, so Furman won’t have to alter its preparations much. The Aztecs have locked it down on defense lately, allowing just 54.8 points per game across its last 5 outings while giving up 61 or fewer points in each. The Under is on a 9-0 run for SDSU.

San Diego State scored just 63 points in its opening-round victory over Charleston, and only G Matt Bradley finished with a double-digit point total (17). The Aztecs turned it over 14 times and will need to be much more careful against an opportunistic Paladins team.

Furman vs. San Diego State picks and predictions

Prediction

Furman 71, San Diego State 68

Moneyline

FURMAN (+200) is worth a look for a chance to double up your initial wager.

The Paladins didn’t play a perfect game in the first game and still got it done. The same holds true for an Aztecs squad that was dismal on offense but played very good defense.

It’s going to be a grind, but the Paladins will ride off to the Sweet 16.

Against the spread

Take FURMAN +5.5 (-110) with the points, if you just don’t believe in it straight up.

The Paladins are 4-1 ATS in the past 5 games overall, including their outright win over Virginia, and are 10-1 ATS in the past 11 games against teams with a winning overall record.

Over/Under

The OVER 137.5 (-108) is the lean, and that will be a rarity in an Aztecs game. The Under has cashed in 9 in a row for SDSU and 13 of its last 16 games.

However, Furman likes to run and will look to get the game speed up despite that San Diego State will try to slow it to a crawl. The Over has cashed in 4 of the past 5 games for Furman, and it’s worth playing lightly.
