Michigan State basketball overcomes slow start to beat Samford

Michigan State basketball was able to overcome another slow start on Tuesday to beat Samford at home 83 to 75. The Spartans are now 4-1 on the season and undefeated at the Breslin Center after the win.

This is another win for MSU that won’t feel too great, as MSU never fully separated from a scrappy Samford team, but ultimately figured enough out to leave with the victory. I think one of the big takeaways from this one is that Samford might just be an NCAA Tournament caliber team.

For the Spartans, this was another game that featured the two-center lineup with MSU starting the game with Jaxon Kohler and Szymon Zapala on the floor. That combination really struggled and Samford came out of the gates with a big lead, but Michigan State was able to weather that barrage and head into halftime with a 38 to 28 lead thanks to some heroics from Jaden Akins, who scored a career high 25 points.

Samford actually outscored MSU in the second half, but it wasn’t enough, and MSU gets their fourth win of the season.

Kim Caldwell recaps Lady Vols’ win versus Samford

Tennessee head coach Kim Caldwell recaps the Lady Vols’ season opening win versus Samford.

Tennessee (1-0) defeated Samford (0-1), 101-53, on Tuesday at Food City Center. Tuesday’s contest was the first for Tennessee under head coach Kim Caldwell.

Caldwell was hired as Tennessee’s head coach in April. She met with media following the Lady Vols’ win against Samford.

“Happy to get game one done,” Caldwell said. “Wasn’t the prettiest. I thought we had some really good spots where we looked great, exactly how we should look for most of the game, and then I think we had some moments where we looked like a brand new team.

“So just going forward, trying to work those things out. We have another tough opponent and a quick turnaround, so we have a big day tomorrow.”

Tennessee will next play UT Martin on Thursday at Food City Center. Tipoff for the in-state matchup is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST and can be watched on SEC Network+.

Notre Dame freshman Izzy Engle scores hat trick in victory vs. Samford

Way to go, Izzy!

Izzy Engle barely has her feet wet with the Notre Dame women’s soccer program. But the freshman midfielder/forward from Edina, Minnesota already is making a big impact. In fact, it’s one most Notre Dame freshmen only can dream of.

During the Irish’s 6-0 road win over Samford, Engle accounted for half of the team’s scoring. In fact, her hat trick was one of the quickest in program history:

It also was the first hat trick for an Irish freshman in 16 years:

Engle comes to the Irish as the reigning Gatorade Minnesota Girls Soccer Player of the Year. One opposing high school coach said this about her:

“Izzy can pick the ball up anywhere on the field and run past everyone. Or, she can combine quickly with her teammates and create a lovely assist. She’s the top female player to come through Minnesota in the 25-plus years I’ve been coaching.”

Now, she belongs to the Irish. Hopefully, this is the first of many highlights for her.

Auburn falls to No. 26 in this week’s ESPN Power Football Index

The Auburn Tigers dropped just outside of the ESPN FPI top 25, falling to number 26 in this week’s rankings.

Despite defeating Samford and improving to 3-0 on the season, the Auburn Tigers have dropped one spot in this week’s ESPN Power Football Index, falling from 25 to 26.

Auburn dismantled FCS opponent Samford on homecoming in week three, winning 45-13 off the back of quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag]’s 405 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.

The FPI ranks each college football team by a variety of factors; Strength of record, strength of schedule, offensive efficiency, defensive efficiency, and overall efficiency.

Here’s a look at where the Tigers rank in several major categories in the ESPN FPI after their first 3-0 start since 2019.

Tale of the Tape: Auburn vs Samford

Auburn should win Saturday, but there is one aspect that they should keep an eye on.

The Samford Bulldogs travel to Jordan-Hare stadium to wish undefeated Auburn a happy homecoming this Saturday at 7 p.m. CT.

The Bulldogs are coming off a rough 30-7 loss at the hands of conference opponent Western Carolina, while the Tigers head into this game without a loss, most recently beating California in Berkeley 14-10.

It is clear Auburn has the edge in this game, not only from a pure talent standpoint but also because of the emotional advantage of a homecoming game.

ESPN FPI gives the Tigers a 98.7% chance of winning and improving to 3-0 on Saturday, a record Auburn hasn’t achieved since 2019, when they started the season 5-0.

Most of the country will check off this week three showdown as a blowout, but will the tale of the tape show us this game could be closer than most think?

The quarterback matchup is fairly interesting heading into this one.

Auburn quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] has been serviceable this season, completing 19/31 passes for 235 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.

He has also fumbled once.

[autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag] has also seen ample playing time for the Tigers, completing 3/9 passes for three yards.

Most of his damage has been done on the ground, where he has rushed for 59 yards on 13 carries, finding the end zone thrice.

On the other side, Samford quarterback [autotag]Michael Heirs[/autotag] has been absolutely electric for the Bulldogs since he transferred to the school in 2022.

Heirs was the 2022 SoCon Offensive Player of the Year last season, collecting 3,544 yards through the air and tying the school record with 36 touchdown passes.

The 36 touchdowns and 3,544 yards were fourth and sixth in the entire nation, respectively.

Heirs also checks in at 6″1 tall and 215 pounds. While you would expect an FCS quarterback to be undersized, his attributes are very comparable to Thorne, who stands 6″2 and weighs in at 203 pounds.

With all that being said, the clear edge in quarterback play still goes to Payton Thorne and Robby Ashford, as the experience and quality wins against FBS opponents outweigh the accolades of Heirs.

A more clear advantage for Auburn is on the defensive side of the ball, where they shined in week two against Cal.

The Tigers’ defense has been decent against the pass this season but struggled against the run in week one against UMass. The good news for Auburn is that run defense seemed to fix itself in week two.

The front seven was able to hold NFL talent [autotag]Jaydn Ott[/autotag] to 3.9 YPC off the back of linebacker [autotag]Eugene Asante[/autotag]’s SEC co-defensive player of the week performance.

The even better news for Auburn is Samford does not run the ball, as their running backs combined for just 14 carries a week ago.

The Bulldogs passing attack is better than most FCS teams, but Auburn’s defensive strength so far in 2023 has been against the pass.

As for Samford’s defense, the glaring stat is the 25.4 PPG they gave up in 2022 to FCS teams. The number itself is respectable, Auburn is much steeper competition.

Auburn gets the edge in defense.

The final edge to Auburn goes in the sheer size department. Auburn’s offensive line weighs an average of 313 pounds.

The average weight of Samford’s interior defensive lineman is 270 pounds.

Discrepancies like that exist throughout the field. Even if the Bulldogs play a great game, the physical tool endured by them may be too much by the time the second half rolls around.

Auburn kicks off its homecoming game against Samford at 7 PM CST on Saturday at Jordan-Hare.

It should be a very happy homecoming for Tiger fans.

Georgia vs Samford Game Preview

Why Samford Will Win

The Bulldogs – the Samford version – came up with a stunner to open the season. 4-7 last year, they beat a strong Kennesaw State squad with a good day from the defense, a balanced performance from the offense, and with a big fourth quarter in the 27-17 comeback victory.

This is a veteran team that knows how to score, will generate a slew of good plays on special teams, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Georgia Will Win

Yeah, Georgia is still pretty good.

That’s a very, very talented Oregon team the Dawgs dropkicked in a brutal 49-3 statement.

Of course the defending national champs are talented – even with all of the key personnel losses – but QB Stetson Bennett showed that he’s not just going to be a game manager who gets by with all the talent around him.

He was making plays, coming up with every right decision, and he looked the part of a national championship quarterback in total command of the attack and the game. And now …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

You’re not going to see a lot of Bennett.

Georgia will be a wee bit sluggish after scoring on the opening drive, but it won’t matter.

Get in, get some more work done, and then get the depth even more reps – not like it didn’t enjoy the time against the Ducks – and rest up for the trip to South Carolina.

Samford will score more than Oregon was able to – there’s going to be a quirky play from somewhere – which will have to be the moral victory.

Georgia football 2022 schedule: Five game-times, TV networks set

A look at the five confirmed game-times and TV networks so far on Georgia’s schedule

Georgia football will look to defend its 2021 national championship this coming season, starting on Saturday, September 3 in Atlanta vs. the Oregon Ducks. That game-time and TV network was set last week, and this week the SEC announced the same for Georgia’s games against Florida, Samford, South Carolina and Kent State.

We now know when five of Georgia’s 12 regular season games will kickoff and which network they’ll be broadcasted on.

Here’s a look:
