NFL Draft: First round landing spots for Samuel Cosmi and Joseph Ossai

Texas’ top two prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft are Joseph Ossai and Sam uelCosmi. Where could be the best fit for each of them?

With the 2021 NFL draft just a few weeks away, the eyes of Texas are on Joseph Ossai and Samuel Cosmi. The edge rusher and offensive tackle are both expected to be relatively high picks among the first 50 or 60 players selected. There’s even some buzz that they could go in the first round.

Ossai left a huge impression after Texas’ Pro Day and was already considered one of the better edge rush prospects in this draft class. Cosmi is another in a long line of impressive offensive line talents among this years crop at the position.

The question then becomes, if they are going to be selected in the first round, where would be the best fit?

Both players have first-round capability and each play premium positions that many teams always need, but it’s crucial to be drafted to the right team with the right fit.

Three Texas players that improved their draft stock most at pro day

After Texas’ pro day on Thursday, three Longhorns may have increased their draft stock after showcasing impressive numbers.

Due to COVID-19 concerns eliminating the annual NFL combine process,  the best chance for draft hopefuls to display their talents is their respective pro days on campus. On Thursday, Texas held their pro day at the indoor practice facility.

All eight draft prospects from Texas attended, although some didn’t perform particular events. Most of the attention centered around Sam Ehlinger, Joseph Ossai and Samuel Cosmi.

However, the gunslinger wasn’t one of the players that caught my attention most at Texas’ pro day. There are three particular Longhorns that analysts have seemingly liked throughout the draft process, but after Thursday, may have started to fall in love with.

Officials from down highway 35 for the Dallas Cowboys were in charge of measuring players and 31 teams (sans LA Rams) were on display to witness.

Take a look at the three Texas players who improved their draft stock most on Thursday.

NFL Draft: Potential landing spots in the first round for Texas OT Samuel Cosmi

If Texas Longhorns offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi is selected in the first round in April, these could be the potential landing spots.

The upcoming NFL draft is going to be stocked full of offensive tackle talent and Samuel Cosmi should be among the first few selected. 2021 NFL mock draft: Panthers double dip on offensive line prospects on Day 2

Panthers double dip on offensive line prospects on Day 2 in new three-round mock by Draft Wire.

“Get an offensive line! What are you guys even doing?!?!?!”

This is easily the most common comment we’ve received on our Panthers Wire Facebook page over the last several years. Sometimes they come attached to articles that have nothing remotely to do with the offensive line as in the case of free safety Tre Boston getting cut a couple days ago.

While not all of this team’s issues can be solved with an OL upgrade, it’s not hard to see why fans have become borderline-obsessed with this unit. While the interior of the line that 2015 season was superb, the failures of Mike Remmers at right tackle against Von Miller in the Super Bowl spoiled the Panthers’ only chance to win a ring since 2003.

Remmers has long-since been replaced by Taylor Moton, who’s developed into one of the game’s top right tackles. However, the rest of the line has become a revolving door in recent years. Nobody has been able to stick at any other spot with the exception of center Matt Paradis.

Heading into 2021, every starter except Paradis is about to become a free agent, including Moton. That means once again this team will need to invest serious resources into this group. Free agents worth considering include Trent Williams, Joe Thuney, Brandon Scherff and Kelechi Osemele. The draft will likely be where GM Scott Fitterer looks to build this line, though.

In that spirit, the Panthers are expected to use at least a couple of picks on offensive line prospects this year. In a new three-round mock by our friends at Draft Wire, Carolina double dipped on two OL prospects on Day 2.

No. 39 overall: Texas OT Sam Cosmi

Cosmi (6-foot-7, 309 pounds) is considered one of the top offensive tackles in this draft class. Pro Football Focus has him ranked No. 7 at the position. They included this clip from Brandon Thorn that shows Cosmi devouring an LSU edge rusher whole and then spitting him out onto the field.

Cosmi could be a first-round talent who drops into Carolina’s lap thanks to being in a deep OT class. Assuming the Panthers use their No. 8 overall pick on a QB or deal it in a trade for a veteran, it’s tough to imagine a better use of their second-round selection than this.

No. 73 overall: Alabama OL Deonte Brown

Brown (6-foot-4, 350 pounds) offers versatility, which is something Carolina should be looking for in its OL prospects. Both of the Panthers’ starting guards John Miller and Chris Reed are about to hit the market plus several of their interior backups. That makes it critical to pickup linemen like Brown who can fill more than one spot.

Here Brown neutralizes two defenders on the same play from left guard.

We’d rather see the Panthers target a cornerback at this spot or at No. 39, but we wouldn’t hate this pick at all.

NFL Draft: Could Joseph Ossai and Samuel Cosmi slide out of the first round?

Joseph Ossai and Samuel Cosmi are both expected to be taken high in the 2021 NFL draft, but could they fall outside of the first round?

Offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi and edge rusher Joseph Ossai are expected to be the first pair of Texas players taken off of the board in the 2021 NFL draft.

They each rank among the top prospects at their positions and have been selected in the first round of numerous mock drafts. Additionally, they play premium positions that teams are always looking to upgrade and draft higher than other positions.

Cosmi has been lauded for his large frame, long arms, and his pass blocking abilities which were among the best in the country and the highest in the Big 12.

Ossai has been lauded for his position flexibility from a defensive end to outside linebacker and ability to play the run, among the best in the country.

They’re both skilled enough to be first round picks. Unfortunately, not only is the draft impossible to predict, but they’re both in circumstances that could cause them to fall out of the first round.

Cosmi is among a very deep offensive tackle draft. Names such as Penei Sewell, Rashawn Slater, Christian Darrisaw, Jaylen Mayfield, Alex Leatherwood, Liam Eichenberg and Teven Jenkins are all offensive lineman that have been mentioned as first round worthy.

In drafts that are deep with premium players in a position, it means that the players who would normally get picked higher end up falling in the draft to to the next day. Teams instead will opt to take first round talent at positions that are not nearly as deep.

For example, Texas ex Connor Williams was thought to be among the best overall offensive lineman in the 2017 NFL draft. That draft included other tackle prospects like Mike McGlinchey and Kolton Miller. Williams fell down to the No. 50 overall selection in the second round.

It benefits Ossai, but also hurts him, to be in a draft class without an elite edge rusher prospect. There’s no Myles Garrett or Chase Young in this draft that teams are confident will be a star.

The most common names that have been talked about at the position are Azeez Ojulari, Gregory Rousseau and Kwity Paye. None of these are being talked about consistently as top 10 overall draft picks and there’s no clear number one edge.

It’s helpful because edge rusher is a premium position that’s continuously getting drafted higher than others. It’s one of the highest regarded in the game.

The issue is that this years draft class of edge rushers reminds me a bit of the 2013 NFL draft. The best edge rusher that year was Ezekiel Ansah in what was overall a disappointing draft for the position.

Ossai could end up taken in the first round, if nothing else, for his position flexibility. It’s not a great draft for teams looking for players to get sacks, but Ossai’s ability to go from playing in a two-point stance to a three-point stance could be enough for a team to take a chance, even if it’s not in the first round.

Cosmi and Ossai are each worthy of first round grades, but it appears the draft may not play out in their favor.

Panthers potential 2021 NFL draft targets: Texas LT Samuel Cosmi

There is no question that the Panthers’ offensive line needs a ton of help.

There is no question that the Panthers’ offensive line needs a ton of help. We have already looked at a few potential OL targets thus far, so let’s keep that train rolling and take a look at another OT prospect who is seeing his stock skyrocket as we get closer to the draft: Texas left tackle Sam Cosmi.

Profile:
6-foot-7, 305 pounds
Projected 40 yard dash: 4.95 seconds
Pros: The first thing you notice with Cosmi is his insane length and vine-like arms. He is a quick mover and does a great job at squaring himself up to speedy edge rushers on his pass sets. In the run game, Cosmi also shows he can get outside and use his quickness to execute his pull blocks well. He is not the strongest lineman on the block, but he shows a solid understanding of picking up stunts, getting to the second level in the run game and using his excellent athleticism to his advantage.

Cons: Cosmi’s game is extremely raw. He has a few hand counters that he occasionally displays in his pass sets, but on the vast majority of his snaps he just seems to rely on using his length, athleticism and natural strength to “get in the way.” Cosmi also needs to add 10-15 pounds, preferably to his upper half in order to handle the size and strength of NFL edge rushers. It would not be surprising to see him sit on the bench his first year to beef up and learn pass rush counters and a more complete understanding of the technical refinement it takes to play left tackle in the pros at a high level.

Overall: Cosmi is one of the top left tackles in all of college football and hasn’t even skimmed the surface on refining his mechanics. With his athleticism and all the room in the world to grow and refine his craft, scouts are starting to get excited about Cosmi. Look for him to be a mid-late first round pick.

How he compares:
Cosmi definitely will not make it to OT1 status, but he has a pretty good chance to get to OT2. Depending on his combine and pro day performances, Cosmi could jump the likes of Christian Darrisaw, Jaylen Mayfield and Rashawn Slater.
