Chiefs at Washington, Final injury reports for Week 6

The final injury report for Week 6 is out. Washington will be without some key performers.

The Washington Football Team and the Kansas City Chiefs practiced for the final time on Friday before Sunday’s Week 6 contest.

With the final day of practice now in the books, we know the status of several injured players for both teams. Washington will be without a pair of key starters, with several players listed as questionable, including a surprisingly late addition.

Here are the complete injury reports for both teams below:

Kansas City Chiefs

DE Chris Jones Wrist DNP DNP DNP Out
CB Charvarious Ward Quad DNP DNP DNP Out

DT Jarran Reed NIR (Personal) DNP
  • The good news for the Chiefs is it does appear wide receiver Tyreek Hill will play. I don’t believe there was ever any real danger in him not playing.
  • Guard Joe Thuney should also be available on Sunday.
  • The bad news for the Chiefs is All-Pro defensive end Chris Jones is out. That’s a tough blow for an already struggling defense.

Washington Football Team

  • Another brutal injury report for Washington. The surprise here is the addition of Terry McLaurin to the injury report. It appears he will be fine for Sunday but did not practice on Friday as the team was being cautious.
  • Five Washington players are ruled out for Sunday, including the starting right side of the offensive line. Fortunately for Washington, Cornelius Lucas and Wes Schweitzer are experienced and capable backups.
  • Cam Sims and Curtis Samuel are out. It does look better for Dyami Brown to play on Sunday. If Brown and McLaurin both play, Washington will be fine at wide receiver.
  • Antonio Gibson was limited again on Friday, but that is normal at this point. Barring a miracle, I’d expect to see the banged-up Gibson play on Sunday.

Washington has one of the best offensive lines in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus

Washington once again has one of the NFL’s better offensive lines through five weeks.

The Washington Football Team had one of the better offensive lines in the NFL in 2020. According to Pro Football Focus, by the end of the season, Washington had the No. 6 offensive line in the NFL.

Despite last season’s success, Washington coach Ron Rivera wanted to shake things up in 2021. Veteran Cornelius Lucas filled in at left tackle admirably in 2020, but he was never considered the long-term answer.

Then, Washington drafted Sam Cosmi in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft. A few weeks later, Washington signed veteran offensive tackle Charles Leno, who the Chicago Bears surprisingly released. Washington also reacquired guard Ereck Flowers from the Miami Dolphins.

Washington released longtime starter Morgan Moses and former third-round pick Geron Christian in response to those moves.

So, for Week 1, Washington’s offensive line consisted of Leno, Ereck Flowers, Chase Roullier, Brandon Scherff and Cosmi. While Cosmi struggled in the opener, he has been one of the NFL’s top run-blocking tackles through five weeks and is a significant reason why PFF has Washington’s offensive line ranked in the top 10 entering Week 6.

PFF recently ranked Washington’s offensive line No. 9 — six spots higher than a week ago:

Rookie Samuel Cosmi bounced back after a tough Week 1 performance and has continued his strong preseason play into his rookie year. Cosmi is the best-graded lineman on the team, and his 89.0 PFF run-blocking grade ranks inside the top 10 of all offensive linemen, tied with Dallas’ Tyron Smith — one of the best tackles in the game so far. All six linemen with at least 100 snaps for Washington this season have overall PFF grades between 69.9 and 77.0, providing quarterback Taylor Heinicke a pretty stable platform to work from.

Cosmi did not practice on Wednesday after leaving Sunday’s loss to the Saints with an ankle injury. Fortunately, Washington was able to plug Lucas in at right tackle.

Washington will also be without All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff for the second consecutive week on Sunday.

While Washington’s defensive line receives most of the accolades, it is the offensive line that continues to get the job done.

First Week 6 injury report for Chiefs vs. Washington

The first injury report for the Week 6 game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Football Team.

Welcome to Week 6. The Washington Football Team and Kansas City Chiefs were back at practice on Wednesday to prepare for their Sunday meeting at FedEx Field.

Both teams are currently battling several injuries, as a combined 13 players did not participate in practice on Wednesday.

You can find the complete injury reports for both teams below:

Kansas City Chiefs

Name Injury Participation
LB Anthony Hitchens Knee DNP
DT Jarran Reed NIR (Personal) DNP
CB Charvarious Ward Quad DNP
TE Blake Bell Back DNP
WR Tyreek Hill Quad DNP
DE Chris Jones Wrist DNP
G Joe Thuney Hand DNP
DB Chris Lammons Shin Full
T Lucas Niang Hamstring Full
  • Anthony Hitchens, Tyreek Hill, Joe Thuney and Chris Jones are all big-time players for the Chiefs. It doesn’t appear that Hill’s injury will cause him to miss any time, despite not practicing on Wednesday.

Washington Football Team

  • Washington’s injury list looks similar to the first one from last week. Jonathan Allen and Cole Holcomb were limited, but I’d expect them to play.
  • Wide receiver Dyami Brown was back in practice on a limited basis. That should bode well for his chances to play on Sunday. Curtis Samuel was back to working on a side field.
  • Guard Brandon Scherff will miss another game this week.
  • Antonio Gibson missed practice on Wednesday. This has been normal recently. I would expect he’s playing on Sunday.
  • Rookie right tackle is one to watch. Cosmi was injured in the second quarter of Sunday’s loss and looked to be in severe pain. Cosmi is having a strong rookie season.

Washington RT Sam Cosmi ruled out with ankle injury

Cornelius Lucas is the right tackle for the remainder of this game.

The Washington Football Team came into Sunday’s game with a laundry list of injuries. One of those injuries was to All-Pro right guard Brandon Scherff, who is out 2-3 weeks with a knee injury.

In the first half of Washington’s game against the Saints, Washington lost rookie right tackle Sam Cosmi for the day with an ankle injury.

Cosmi originally went down after an Antonio Gibson touchdown run and was slow to get up. He left the field under his own power.

On its next series, Cosmi actually returned to the game for Washington but quickly went down again without contact. It appeared Cosmi rolled his injured ankle in pass protection, and Washington didn’t take a chance, ruling him out for the day.

That means veteran Cornelius Lucas, who did an excellent job for Washington at left tackle last season, is the right tackle for the remainder of the day.

Washington vs. Saints: 4 matchups to watch in Week 5

Here are four key matchups to watch for Washington vs. New Orleans on Sunday.

For the Washington Football Team to pick up their third win of the season on Sunday, they’ll need to overcome several injuries to take down the New Orleans Saints.

Washington enters Sunday’s game minus tight end Logan Thomas, who went on injured reserve, wide receivers Cam Sims and Dyami Brown, and right guard Brandon Scherff. Washington also has several starters who are questionable, such as running back Antonio Gibson, defensive tackle Daron Payne and wide receiver Curtis Samuel.

As with every week, it will be individual matchups that could determine the outcome of the game. In this game, there are several intriguing matchups for both teams.

The Washington Football Team meets the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in a much-anticipated Week 3 battle.

As with every NFL game, individual matchups can determine the outcome of a game. In this game, there are several intriguing matchups. Both teams were expected to be stout on defense in 2021, although Washington’s defense has gotten off to a slow start.

Despite last week’s destruction of the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo’s offense, one of the best in the NFL last season, hasn’t yet clicked on all cylinders.

Here are three matchups we believe could have the biggest impact on Sunday’s game:

Studs and Duds from Washington’s 30-29 win vs. Giants

Here are our studs and duds from Washington’s thrilling victory over the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football.

The Washington Football Team defeated the New York Giants, 30-29, to kick off Week 2 on Thursday Night Football.

It was a wild game that came down to the final seconds. Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins lined up for the game-winner from 48 yards out, but he missed. However, New York defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence was offsides, and Hopkins got another chance—this time from 48 yards—and he nailed it, giving Washington its first win of the season.

Washington’s win featured plenty of heroics. It also featured some players who could have done more.

The Washington Football Team is set to clash with the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1 of NFL action on Sunday at FedEx Field. This game features some of the most exciting young players in the NFL, including the reigning offensive and defensive rookies of the year.

Several high-profile matchups could determine the outcome of the meeting between the Washington Football Team and the Los Angeles Chargers.

Here are the top four matchups fans should keep an eye on in Sunday’s game.

Who was Washington’s top rookie in the preseason?

Pro Football Focus ranked every rookie this preseason. Who was Washington’s highest-rated rookie? And lowest-rated rookie?

The Washington Football Team completed the preseason last week with a 1-2 record after losing the Baltimore Ravens in the finale.

It was a positive and productive preseason for Washington because the team stayed healthy heading into Week 1 of the regular season next Sunday.

Another reason this preseason was a good one for Washington was the play of several rookies. Undrafted running back Jaret Patterson received plenty of headlines as players who touch the ball often do. Patterson was fantastic for Washington in all phases and ended the preseason as the team’s No. 3 back for the regular season.

Despite Patterson’s preseason success, was he Washington’s top-graded rookie, according to Pro Football Focus?

No, that honor would go to second-round pick Sam Cosmi.

PFF gave Cosmi a grade of 81.8, offering the following analysis of his preseason play:

Cosmi doesn’t have the luxury of elite players around him to mask some deficiencies. They need him to be ready ASAP, and he looked as much in the run game where he earned a 92.5 grade.

Cosmi ran with the second team at right tackle during minicamp, but Cornelius Lucas opened training camp on the reserve/COVID-19 list, and Cosmi moved into the starting lineup. After struggling initially, he improved over each day and had solid efforts in both preseason games in which he played.

So, which Washington rookie had the lowest grade, per PFF?

That would be first-round Jamin Davis.

PFF game Davis a grade of 43.6.

With only one year as a starter in a limited role at Kentucky, Davis was not the type of player you’d expect to make an immediate impact. The speed of the game in a new system may just take some catching up.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in that grade. Davis played a limited amount of snaps, and, as PFF included in their analysis, he is still catching up to the speed of the game.
