ESPN analysts on if close win changes way playoff committee views Clemson

Fifth-ranked Clemson staved off an upset bid from then-No. 14 Syracuse last Saturday at Death Valley, erasing a double-digit deficit to beat the Orange, 27-21, after trailing at halftime.

On ESPN’s College Football Live this week, one of the network’s college football analysts, Greg McElroy, was asked if the win changes the way the Tigers are viewed by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee, given that it was closer than some people would’ve liked.

McElroy certainly doesn’t think it should and doesn’t believe style points should matter for Clemson’s resume when the Tigers are a perfect 8-0 on the season and the heavy favorite to win the ACC.

“Well it shouldn’t. I don’t understand when it all became about style points,” he said. “Last I checked, the goal is to ultimately win the football game. And Clemson, albeit imperfect, yeah they won the football game and did so, I might say, against a team that was previously undefeated and also they did so with a minus-three turnover margin – and by the way might as well have been minus-four turnover margin because Syracuse’s turnover was late in the game.

“So, I guess I’m just trying to figure out does close now, I thought it only counted in horseshoes and hand grenades, but now it counts in college football, too? Like, do we need style points if you’re undefeated and win your conference, like yeah, you also gotta do more now? What are we doing?”

The first set of College Football Playoff rankings will be unveiled next Tuesday, Nov. 1, and ESPN’s Sam Acho doesn’t think the Tigers’ ranking should be impacted negatively by the narrow win over Syracuse.

“People talk about man, Clemson won but it was close, and should they now be lower in the College Football Playoff ranking? No,” he said on College Football Live. “I got a chance to meet last year with the selection committee, actually was a part of a mock selection group. So, we brought some people together and we actually sat through the entire process of how they select teams for the College Football Playoff. And one of the biggest criteria is winning your conference, a conference champion.

“So yes, Clemson didn’t win in the fashion that people expected against Syracuse, but they won. And then now you have a chance to go and win your conference. So, the selection committee, even though you talk about the four best teams, they’re going to pick an undefeated conference champion – i.e., let’s say that’s Clemson – over a one-loss team in the SEC or in the Big Ten that does not win their conference.”

For what it’s worth, Clemson has an 82.3 percent chance to win the ACC, per ESPN FPI. North Carolina has the next-best chance to win the conference at 15.9 percent.

The Tigers have a 62.1 percent chance to reach the CFP, according to the Allstate Playoff Predictor – the third-highest chance to reach the playoff behind Ohio State (81 percent) and Georgia (69 percent).

Should Clemson make a QB change? ESPN analyst weighs in

During ESPN’s College Football Live show Tuesday, one of the network’s college football analysts discussed Clemson’s quarterback outlook following Dabo Swinney’s decision to replace starter DJ Uiagalelei with freshman Cade Klubnik last Saturday in the second half of the Tigers’ eventual 27-21 comeback win over Syracuse at Death Valley.

After the game, Swinney backed Uiagalelei despite the benching, saying he remains the Tigers’ starter and the team’s leader.

ESPN’s Sam Acho, the former Texas and NFL linebacker, was asked if he would make a quarterback change if he were Swinney.

“No, I wouldn’t,” he said. “I love the way that Clemson is handling this situation, specifically Dabo. There’s a reason Clemson has won 38 straight home games. It’s number one, really good talent, but number two, really good coaching. Look at what DJ said as a player – he said hey, I would’ve made that same change. And then look at what Cade said… the three-time state champion who has every award, one of the best high school recruits in college. He said hey, this is DJ’s team, I’m following DJ’s lead.

“So no, I would not make a change. I would keep DJ U at quarterback, and if there does happen to be a point where you need to put a different quarterback in to win a game, then sure. But you do that for that game to win. Don’t put a bunch of extra pressure on a quarterback that doesn’t need it.”

Uiagalelei, who threw two interceptions and lost a fumble against Syracuse, came into the game having thrown just two interceptions over the first seven games this season. Overall, after eight games, the former five-star prospect has completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 1,803 yards and 17 touchdowns with four interceptions, to go with 350 rushing yards and four more scores on the ground.

Klubnik has played in five games this season, completing 9 of 19 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. He went just 2-of-4 passing for 19 yards in relief of Uiagalelei against Syracuse but helped ignite Clemson’s offense while doing his part to rally the team from an 11-point deficit in the come-from-behind win.

ESPN analysts discuss Clemson’s QB switch in Syracuse game

During the Championship Drive: College Football Rewind show that aired Sunday on ESPN, the network’s Sam Acho, Heather Dinich and Trevor Matich discussed Dabo Swinney’s decision to replace starting quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei with freshman Cade Klubnik in the second half of Clemson’s eventual 27-21 win over Syracuse on Saturday at Death Valley.

“To me, that move, it was a great coaching move — do what you need to do to win the game,” Dinich said. “But to me, it opens the door to say can Clemson win a national title with DJ U? Are they good enough? I don’t know.”

“He’s got a better chance than I would playing quarterback for them, and everything’s relative,” Matich added. “Klubnik is very talented, but I don’t know that he’s ready to implement the entire playbook yet.”

Uiagalelei, who entered Saturday’s game with 17 touchdown passes and only two interceptions, threw a pair of picks while also losing a fumble that was returned 90 yards for a touchdown.

Klubnik, the former five-star prospect from Austin, Texas, went just 2-of-4 passing for 19 yards in relief of Uiagalelei but helped ignite the Tigers’ offense while doing his part to rally the team from an 11-point deficit in the comeback victory.

Despite Uiagalelei’s struggles and subsequent benching, Swinney backed the junior following the game, saying he remains the Tigers’ starter and the team’s leader.

“It’s interesting that Dabo Swinney always talks in terms of competition, that even his stars need to earn their position in practice and in games every single day,” Matich said. “He doesn’t talk about DJ U like that. He says he’s our guy, that we sat him down at halftime but he’s coming back — he’s our guy.”

Acho likes Swinney saying that Clemson is sticking with Uiagalelei as the starter.

“I do like that move though, I really do,” he said. “Because you could say hey, he had a bad day, let him continue to be the starter and let Klubnik continue to learn as opposed to making a quarterback switch now and then it doesn’t go well.”

Added Matich: “That would be the worst thing because then instead of having Klubnik come off the bench, they’d have to make him the starter. Yay, a week of social media, and then oops, we made a mistake, sit back down kid. That’s something they should avoid. And by the way, DJ U is still getting better. He had a bad day.”

Overall, in eight games this season, Uiagalelei has completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 1,803 yards and 17 touchdowns with four interceptions, to go with 350 rushing yards and four more scores on the ground.

Klubnik has played in five games this season, completing 9 of 19 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown.

ESPN analyst: ‘We should be talking more about Clemson’

With its 34-28 win at Florida State last Saturday, Clemson extended the nation’s longest active winning streak to 13 games, and the Tigers put up at least 30 points for the seventh time in as many games this season.

Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei completed 15-of-23 passes for 203 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, adding a rushing score, while running back Will Shipley recorded a career-high 238 all-purpose yards — including 121 rushing yards on 20 carries, 48 receiving yards on a career-high six receptions and a 69-yard kickoff return.

On ESPN’s Championship Drive, ESPN analyst Sam Acho was asked why people aren’t talking more about the Tigers right now.

“Well, we should be,” Acho said. “This is 13 straight. They’re undefeated this season. DJ U is playing a lot more like we expected him to play in years past — the three passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown. Will Shipley at running back, he’s not only carrying the load as a runner, but also as a receiver — had a career-high six receptions.”

Up next for fifth-ranked Clemson (7-0, 5-0 ACC) is Saturday’s top-15 showdown against No. 14 Syracuse (6-0, 3-0) at Death Valley (12 p.m., ABC).

“Next week, Syracuse — which shouldn’t be a big deal, but it may be a big deal,” Acho said. “Clemson played great (at FSU) all throughout. They were up 34-14, but towards the end, their defense gave up 14 points in the fourth quarter. If you want to be a dominant, championship-level team and defense, you should not allow people to score on you late. It shows signs of weakness, it gives people hope. You don’t want to do that when you’re going against an undefeated Syracuse team next week.”

Acho added that it’s time for people to start talking more about — and believing in — Swinney’s Tigers.

“We should be talking more about Clemson,” he said. “They believe, Dabo believes — I think we need to start believing.”

ESPN analysts discuss Uiagalelei, Clemson’s win over FSU

On ESPN’s College Football Final, show host Matt Barrie and analysts Joey Galloway and Sam Acho discussed DJ Uiagalelei and Clemson’s 34-28 victory over Florida State on Saturday night at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.

On Clemson’s second possession, Uiagalelei avoided a sack, stepped up in the pocket and threw a 59-yard dime to Antonio Williams for the Tigers’ first touchdown of the night that tied the score at 7 apiece with 6:52 left in the first quarter.

“Florida State sends the blitz. Man-to-man coverage on the back end,” Galloway said. “DJ U just steps up, nice calmly goes down the field.”

Uiagalelei led Clemson on six consecutive scoring drives as the Tigers (7-0, 5-0 ACC) won their 13th consecutive game, and seventh in a row in the series against the Seminoles (4-3, 2-3 ACC).

“The biggest thing about DJ U is that he’s just playing so much better — calm in the pocket, making great decisions, better protecting it,” Acho said.

Uiagalelei accounted for four total touchdowns (three passing, one rushing), was 15-of-23 through the air for 203 yards and picked up a 5-yard rushing touchdown.

“Every game, though, he’s got the one play, like how did he miss that guy,” Barrie said. “But then he does something brilliant, and then you just rely on this defense.”

Defensively, Clemson allowed touchdowns on two of the first three drives before settling in and holding the Seminoles scoreless for its next six drives, which included three fourth-down stops.

The Tigers tallied nine tackles for loss and a key strip-sack just before halftime that led to another score.

“This is where Florida State starts to fall apart, on that turnover,” Galloway said.

After two games on the road, Clemson will return to Memorial Stadium for its annual homecoming game when the Tigers face Syracuse this Saturday. The game is scheduled for noon on ABC.

“They have Syracuse next week at home in Death Valley. Should be fun,” Barrie said.

ESPN analysts discuss what they want to see with Clemson tonight

Fourth-ranked Clemson is set to open the 2022 season against Georgia Tech tonight in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game.

During ESPN’s College Football Live show today, longtime ESPN college football analyst Rod Gilmore talked about the two things he’s looking forward to seeing with the Tigers tonight when they square off against the Yellow Jackets at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

“With all due respect to Georgia Tech – I can say whatever I want – this game is all about Clemson. There is no pressure,” Gilmore said. “This is about Clemson, and it is about DJ Uiagalelei and how he performs. No quarterback is under more pressure than he is. Last season, he threw more picks than touchdowns. He had nine touchdown passes and 10 picks. And he’s been cited as the guy, the reason why Clemson couldn’t get it done last year. It’s more complicated than that, but he’s carrying the weight of that burden. So, he needs to play well tonight, and he’s got to get some help from the defense.

“The other thing I want to see is I want to see if that defensive line for Clemson is as great as we expect it to be. It should be. But those are the two things I’m looking forward to seeing – how DJ Uiagalelei plays tonight and how that defensive line for Clemson performs.”

ESPN college football analyst Sam Acho also discussed on College Football Live what he wants to see with Clemson tonight.

“There’s a new offensive coordinator in Clemson, but there’s also a new defensive coordinator at Clemson,” he said. “We know how great Brent Venables has been for the last several years at Clemson. They’ve been top-10, top-five defenses. Even last year, a top-five defense. Well, he is no longer there, and I get it – there are some playmakers on that defensive line. I think it’s led by Bryan Bresee. But I want to see y’all play with a new DC, I want to see what you all do against Georgia Tech and moving forward. Even offensively as well – there’s new, two coordinators in town. We cannot take that lightly.”

Tonight’s game is set to kick off at 8 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.

During a recent episode of ESPN’s College Football Live, ESPN analyst Sam Acho was asked the question, “Can Clemson be a legitimate contender in 2022?”

The former University of Texas and NFL linebacker responded by talking about the Tigers’ quarterback situation with rising junior D.J. Uiagalelei and freshman Cade Klubnik.

“Sometimes it’s about new ideas. Sometimes it’s about new recruits,” Acho said. “And yes, D.J. Uiagalelei is going to get the starting spot this year. But there’s a new recruit in town by the name of Cade Klubnik who’s a blue-chip recruit out of Austin, multi-time high school national championship quarterback who is at Clemson — one of the best recruits in this class.

“So for me, yes, you have D.J. U there, and hopefully he’ll be able to improve on not only his sack rate but also his efficiency. But if not, you have a young phenom waiting in the wings. So for me, if D.J. U doesn’t work out, you know you have Cade Klubnik. That would be the formula for Clemson’s offense to be where they need to be, because you know their defense is going to be fine.”

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney made it clear coming out of the spring that Uiagalelei is still the starting signal-caller. But Klubnik, who went through the spring as a mid-year enrollee, is waiting in the wings should Uiagalelei’s struggles carry over from the 2021 season. And though Klubnik may be the backup for now, Swinney has said Klubnik will have an opportunity to play this season, comparing the situation between Uiagalelei and Klubnik to one of his recent quarterback rooms.

In his first full season as Clemson’s starting quarterback in 2021, Uiagalelei completed 55.6 percent of his passes for 2,246 yards and nine touchdowns with 10 interceptions. Over his first two seasons at Clemson, the former five-star prospect has completed 58.2 percent of his passes for 3,160 yards and 14 touchdowns against 10 interceptions.

Klubnik heads into his freshman season as a Tiger having completed 70.0 percent of his career passes in high school for 7,426 yards and 86 touchdowns vs. just seven interceptions. As a senior in 2021, he completed 71.3 percent of his passes for 3,251 yards and 43 touchdowns against just three interceptions.

Clemson opens its 2022 campaign against Georgia Tech at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Monday, Sept. 5. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN.

Come out to support Clemson softball at Dear Old Clemson’s second event which is set for August 27 at the Madren Conference Center.  Clemson returns one of the top teams in the nation and adds some new talent to the mix.   If you sign up for certain club levels you get free access to all Dear Old Clemson events or purchase your tickets today at Dear Old Clemson.

ESPN analyst names Bills’ Josh Allen No. 1 QB in NFL (video)

ESPN analyst names #Bills’ Josh Allen No. 1 QB in NFL (video):

The Bills Josh Allen has been winning over his teammates and fans with his play on the field in his first several seasons.

Allen’s position play has been garnering the respect and attention of those outside the Bills organization and fan base as well.

Count ESPN analyst Sam Acho among them. The former NFL linebacker and now ESPN analyst shared who his top-five quarterbacks in the NFL right now are while appearing on “First Take” this past week.

He had Josh Allen at the top of his list, with Justin Herbert, Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers, and Joe Burrow following him.

“So, when I go to my top five quarterbacks right now, I’m going based on who do I want to lead my team based off of what we’ve seen from them,” Acho said. “And so, for me, number one, I’m going with Josh Allen. You saw what he did in the playoffs. Nine touchdowns, zero interceptions, and oh, by the way, he ran for 134 yards. That’s why he’s my number one. I’m talking about based off the last even few years, he’s gotten better every single year.”

I recently met the football-pro-turned-analyst and published author at the Super Bowl Breakfast in Los Angeles. And it’s important to point out that, while the omission of Patrick Mahomes from his top five QB list caused some knee-jerk Twitter backlash, Acho carries notable IQ distinctions in his background that should raise some interest and lend further credence to his analysis.

The former LB was featured in a 2016 AOL article that highlighted “Six NFL Players with Genius IQs” and was featured alongside another former Bill Ryan Fitzpatrick (Acho spent a month with Buffalo in August of 2019.)

He also was named the 2012 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education and was named as one of the 10 smartest players in the NFL by Bleacher Report.

So he may be on to something with his list!
