Best plays from Titans’ 31-17 win over Colts

Here’s a look at just some of the best plays from the game.

The Tennessee Titans (7-5) have struggled in recent history against the division rival Indianapolis Colts (6-6).

But the offense came alive and the team was able to pull ahead by a significant measure in the second half to secure a 31-17 victory on the road against a team they lost 19-17 to earlier this year.

Here’s a look at just some of the best plays from the game.

5. WR Adam Humphries’ first quarter touchdown.

The Colts may have struck first, but it didn’t take too long for the Titans to get right there on the scoreboard with them. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill connected with Humphries on this third-down pass with just over five minutes to go ahead of the second quarter to tie the game at 7-7.

Five standouts from Titans’ 31-17 win over Colts

Here are five standouts from the victory.

The Tennessee Titans (7-5) look like a much more put-together team than when they last faced the Indianapolis Colts (6-6) and fell 19-17 on their home turf.

That showed when they recorded a 31-17 victory on the road in Indianapolis this week. With the victory, the Titans now sit on a three-game winning streak.

Here are five standouts from the victory.

1. QB Ryan Tannehill.

Did anyone truly believe Tannehill would handle the offense as well as he has after taking Marcus Mariota’s place. He’s only lost one game as a starter for Tennessee, and the team seems to have totally turned themselves around in his presence.

Tannehill was 17-of-22 passing for 182 yards and two touchdowns — without an interception. Jacoby Brissett can hardly say the same.

Observations from Titans’ 31-17 win over Colts

Here are a few quick observations we made throughout the contest.

The Tennessee Titans (7-5) are a very different team than when they last faced the Indianapolis Colts (6-6) and fell 19-17 in Nissan Stadium.

That showed when they hit the Colts’ turf on Sunday and recorded a 31-17 victory in Lucas Oil Stadium. With the victory, the Titans now sit on a three-game winning streak.

Here are a few quick observations we made throughout the contest.

– The Titans got the ball first, allowing quarterback Ryan Tannehill and the offense to go to work.

[lawrence-related id=23066]

– Feeding Derrick Henry has been key, and the Titans gave him the ball first. Henry fumbled the ball after a big run.

– Indianapolis had the Tennessee secondary on its toes, and quarterback Jacoby Brissett took advantage of the confusion it deliver a touchdown pass to tight end Jack Doyle to send the Colts up, 7-0 early on.

– Tannehill looked accurate and efficient on the following drive, connecting with A.J. Brown and later with wideout Adam Humphries to tie the game at 7-7.

– The Titans used Ryan Succop for an extra-point attempt and Ryan Santoso on the following kickoff. Santoso’s kickoff resulted in a touchback.

[lawrence-related id=23061]

– Adam Vinatieri missed a 55-yard field goal and the game stayed tied.

– Tannehill tried to escape pressure as the Titans got the ball back, but fumbled instead to commit the second turnover of the game.

– Cornerback Adoree Jackson was shaken up and missed a few plays, but came up with a tackle for loss when he made his return.

– Vinatieri tried another long field goal, but the attempt was blocked by Austin Johnson. It was a strong series for Johnson, who had a tackle for loss on the previous loss.

[lawrence-related id=23051]

– Tannehill was sacked on the following drive before the Titans were left punting.

– The colts really got rolling on their following drive, but the Titans defense managed to hold them to a field goal. Vinatieri was good from 38 yards out to give the Colts a 10-7 lead in the second quarter.

– The Titans saw much more of the same on the following drive, which ended in a sack on Tannehill and had the team punting again.

– Tannehill was sacked five times in the first half, including two times on the team’s last drive of the second quarter.

[lawrence-related id=23042]

– The Colts were on the move early in the third quarter, and started the half strong with a touchdown. Nyheim Himes took it in on the one-yarder. It was 17-7, Indianapolis as Tennessee started to fall behind.

– The Titans answered back on what was a huge drive for Henry, as the former Alabama rusher took it in for a score. The Titans trailed just 17-14.

– Complementary football is something the Titans stress, and the defense matched the efforts of the offense when Brissett got back to the field and was intercepted by safety Kevin Byard.

– A 31-yard field goal by Ryan Succop tied the game, and the defense forced a three-and-out on the Colts’ next possession.

[lawrence-related id=23003]

– Safety Dane Cruikshank blocked a Colts field goal attempt, and cornerback Tye Smith ran it in for a touchdown to make it 24-17, Titans.

– The Titans continued to turn the tide, with cornerback Logan Ryan picking up an interception. Tannehill connected with wideout Kalif Raymond with just over three minutes left to play.

– Smith forced a fumble, and the Titans got the ball back at the bottom of the fourth quarter to finish out the contest.

– Tannehill was sacked a total of six times on the win.

The Tennesee Titans will travel to Indianapolis to take on the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium today. With both teams running the ball as of late expect a lot of ground and pound today with great defensive lines expect a low scoring affair.

Tennessee will look to establish the run game early against the Colts, they have been on absolute fire the last month where they have gone over the 200-yard mark twice. While Indianapolis struggled against the run early in the season they have held their opponents to under 100 yards over the last four games and will continue to put pressure on the offense upfront. This is looking to be a defensive battle and should a low scoring affair.

The Titans made the change at quarterback and haven’t looked back since. Benching Mariota in favor of Tannehill has been their key to success as of late. The Titans are number one in the red zone this year by cashing in on 72.41 percent of all drives. Look for both teams to run the ball and try to open up the pass today, the last time they played came down to one drive.

Prediction: I’d take the Titans (-1) in this one as they have been cruising along with their newfound quarterback, who’s putting up big numbers and establishing the RPO. I also expect this to be a low scoring game with how both teams are running the ball lately. Take the under (u42)

3 keys to a Titans victory vs. Colts

Here are three keys to victory for the Titans to improve to 7-5 on the season.

The Tennessee Titans had a dismal start to the 2019 season, but seem to be turning things around, riding high on a two-game winning streak and back above .500 with an overall record of 6-5.

The team recorded a dominant 42-20 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, and will look to continue their success as they travel to Indianapolis to face yet another division opponent in the Colts.

Here are three keys to victory for the Titans to improve to 7-5 on the season.

1. Rattle QB Jacoby Brissett.

Brissett hasn’t exactly been at the top of his game lately — if anything, he seems to be declining even more. Brissett was 16-of-25 passing for 129 yards without a score in last week’s 20-17 loss to the Houston Texans. He’s up against a Titans team that has given up the ninth and eighth fewest points per game and third-down conversions, respectively.

If Tennessee keeps it up, the quarterback could be in for a difficult game.

NFL Best Bets: Three underdog locks for Week 13

Our weekly NFL underdog betting staple continues into Week 13 where Ken Pomponio features three teams likely to upset their underdog odds

We’re past Thanksgiving, so the real NFL season is underway.

At least that’s how the saying goes.

In this space, we’re bringing a 21-15 overall record into the closing stretch after going 2-1 last week. I was on pair of underdogs who covered in straight-up losses (Colts +3.5 against the Texans and Cowboys +6.5 vs. the Patriots) and another (Packers +3.5 at the 49ers) that most definitely did not.

Now, with the trio of Turkey Day games already in the Week 13 books, we’ll have to come up with three underdogs from the rest the card, utilizing, as usual, Wednesday’s posted point spreads from BetMGM.com. Here goes …

Tennessee Titans (+2.5) at Indianapolis Colts

(Photo Credit: Christopher Hanewinckel – USA TODAY Sports)

These two AFC South foes met back in Week 2, and the visiting Colts came away with a 19-17 road victory for their 19th win in the last 23 meetings with the Titans since the start of the 2008 season.

But it’s been the Titans who have since undergone the greatest transformation, winning four of five games since Ryan Tannehill replaced the scuffling Marcus Mariota as the starting quarterback in Week 7. Tannehill has been much more than just a fill-in, throwing for 10 TDs and rushing for three more while throwing only four interceptions.

Indy, meanwhile, is trending in the opposite direction, having dropped three of four since Week 9 with QB Jacoby Brissett missing two of those losses with a knee injury.

Brissett has been back for the last two games, but two of his top weapons will missing Sunday as tight end Eric Ebron has been placed on injured reserve list and No. 1 wideout T.Y. Hilton is sidelined after suffering a setback with his nagging calf injury in practice this week.

That’s more than enough to tilt the balance in favor of the red-hot Tannehill and the Titans if you weren’t leaning in that direction already.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+1.5) at Jacksonville Jaguars

(Photo Credit: Jason Getz – USA TODAY Sports)

This matchup of 4-7 Florida foes also is a meeting of two teams headed in opposite directions of late as the Bucs have won two of their last three while the Jags have dropped three straight, losing by at least 20 each time.

Tampa quietly owns the league’s No. 3 scoring offense at 28.4 points per game, and only the Cowboys’ Dak Prescott, with 3,788 in 12 games, has thrown for yards than the Bucs’ Jameis Winston (3,391 in 11). Winston also ranks fourth with 22 TD passes but, of course, the problem is interceptions as Winston has tossed 20 — six more than any other QB in the league.

Meanwhile, QB Nick Foles is back at the helm in J’ville, but he’s guided the Jags to only 33 points in his last two starts.

Foles has a capable sidekick in running back Leonard Fournette, but (again) the Bucs quietly own the league’s No. 2 defense against the run. Jacksonville doesn’t have cornerback Jalen Ramsey anymore to help deal with Tampa’s standout WR duo of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, who have both already eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards on the season and have combined for 16 scoring receptions.

Look for the Bucs to prevail in a shootout.

Minnesota Vikings (+2.5) at Seattle Seahawks

(Photo Credit: David Berding – USA TODAY Sports)

It’s another intriguing Monday night matchup as the NFC’s two current wild-card front-runners put their superb records on the line.

Both teams feature QBs (Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins) playing at elite levels, and well-rounded, top-10 offenses going against shakier-than-most-expect defenses, particularly against the pass, so there should be some back-and-forth action on the scoreboard.

Despite their 9-2 record, though, the Seahawks are stunningly 0-5 ATS against the midweek lines at home this season while the 8-3 Vikings have covered and won in three of their last four road contests.

Take the Purple and the points.

Colts vs. Titans: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 13

Key matchups in Week 13.

After having an extended break following last Thursday’s game against the Houston Texans, the Indianapolis Colts return to action as they’ll host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. They approach the end of this three-week stretch, which consisted of all divisional matchups.

Even with their loss in Week 12 and suffering additional injuries, the Colts are still very much alive in the AFC playoff picture. It’s just a matter of relying on their strengths at this point, and hopefully getting back a key contributor or two in the coming weeks.

Here are three, key matchups to watch in the Colts’ Week 13 bout against the Titans:

QB Jacoby Brissett vs. Titans’ Top 10 scoring defense

Even as someone who has defended Jacoby Brissett on various occasions, I must admit now is the time for him to step up his game. Regardless if it was before his knee injury in Week 9 or right after, the Colts’ QB1 has begun to struggle and is in need of a huge game on Sunday.

While the Titans rank fairly low in defensive categories such as passing yards allowed (24th with 255) and red-zone scoring percentages (30th with 64.5%), they’ve been a stingy group in other areas. Entering Week 13, the Titans have been giving up the ninth and eighth fewest points per game and third-down conversions, respectively. This is huge to think about in relation to Brissett’s struggles.

For a quarterback that has averaged 138 passing yards in his last two games along with being sacked four times, the odds seem to be against Brissett having a breakout game. Especially when he’ll be missing his three best offensive targets in RB Marlon Mack, WR T.Y. Hilton, and TE Eric Ebron.

Former Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck praises Ryan Tannehill

And Tannehill is drawing the attention of former NFL quarterbacks — including those who saw time for the two-toned blue in their careers.

The Tennessee Titans offense has found a new sense of life since Ryan Tannehill took over in Marcus Mariota’s place during Week 6’s shutout loss to the Denver Broncos.

Tannehill has posted a 4-1 overall record as a Titans starter, and has looked more decisive and comfortable at the helm than Mariota did at the start of the season.

And Tannehill is drawing the attention of former NFL quarterbacks — including those who saw time for the two-toned blue in their careers.

One of those names is Matt Hasselbeck, who played for the Titans in 2011 and 2012.

[lawrence-related id=22975]

Hasselbeck completed 457-of-739 passes for 4,938 yards and 25 touchdowns with 19 interceptions in his two years with the Titans.

Tannehill is making a case for himself to be the Titans’ long-term starter as he’s completed 97-of-136 passes for 1,161 yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions in 2019.

It will be interesting to see if the Titans ultimately give Tannehill a contract extension after the season, or move on and select a promising signal-caller from a talented 2020 NFL Draft class that includes names like Heisman candidate Joe Burrow.

The Titans will face the Indianapolis Colts at noon CT on Sunday in Lucas Oil Stadium.

6 former Miami Dolphins thankful to be playing elsewhere in 2019

The Miami Dolphins have experienced quite a bit of turnover, which of their former players is most thankful to call somewhere else home?

The Miami Dolphins have experienced a great deal of turnover in recent years. Just from 2016, Miami has fallen off from a 10-6 playoff run to one of the least talented teams in the NFL. That was, of course, an executive decision. Moving on from so many pieces of the existing roster was done with the “bandaid” method in mind — if Miami was going to successfully overhaul their roster, they needed to cast out the pieces who weren’t going to be a part of the future quickly, in order to maximize their assets.

But not every play shed off that 2016 roster departed as a part of the great roster purge of 2019.

Here are the five former Miami Dolphins from opening day of 2016 thankful to be playing elsewhere across the league.

OL Billy Turner, Green Bay Packers

Turner was abruptly cut by Adam Gase and company in October of 2016 after a brutal showing. In a classic case of Dolphins irony, Turner has actually played quite well in life after Miami. He went on to start 11 games for the Denver Broncos in 2018 and has served as a starter in every single game for the Green Bay Packers after signing a 4-year, $28M contract with Green Bay this spring in free agency.

The Packers are 8-3.

WR Jarvis Landry, Cleveland Browns

Ah, yes. Landry has spoken at length about how it hurt to be dealt elsewhere in the league after thinking he’d spend his entire career in Miami. How’s that working out for the Dolphins? Landry gouged Miami this past week in his first game against his former team for 10 receptions, 148 yards and 2 touchdowns. Landry is on pace for 86 receptions for 1,226 yards and 7 touchdowns this season, his second with the Browns.

Cleveland is 5-6, 1 game out of the wildcard.

QB Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee Titans

The Dolphins’ most polarizing player in recent memory. In hindsight, it seems as though both factions were right: Ryan Tannehill can be really good if you surround him with the right supporting cast — but he wasn’t “the guy” to lead Miami back to relevancy. Tannehill was traded to Tennessee for a 4th round pick this spring and has promptly gone 4-1 as the starter in Tennessee. He’s Pro Football Focus’ 5th highest scored quarterback since taking over.

The Titans are 6-5 with two games left to play against the division leading Houston Texans.

OT Laremy Tunsil, Houston Texans

Tunsil was reportedly quite upset with the deal that sent him to Houston, but this will likely turn into a win for all sides when it is all said and done. Miami can get creative with the assets they were given for Tunsil and avoids paying out a big money contract that would be something they’d have to work around for years to come.

Tunsil? He gets to block for one of the best young quarterbacks in football in Deshaun Watson and compete for championships.

Houston is 7-4.

DL Jordan Phillips, Buffalo Bills

This one hurts. Phillips was cut by Miami because Adam Gase was butting heads with him. Phillips has promptly headed north to Buffalo and is playing very good football for the Bills. And the Dolphins always seem to get his best effort.

The Bills are 8-3.

S Minkah Fitzpatrick, Pittsburgh Steelers

You already know Fitzpatrick is pumped to be playing in Pittsburgh, considering how he strong-armed his way out of South Florida this season. Fitzpatrick, renowned for his versatility, suddenly took exception to being played in a slew of roles when the Dolphins were getting blown out — and here we are. Players who can’t buy in to Brian Flores’ culture are probably better off elsewhere anyway, but the gift of hindsight may not look back on this decision favorably if Fitzpatrick continues to roll up the turnovers for the Steelers.

6 Titans the Colts must game plan for in Week 13

These Titans must be in the game plan in Week 13.

The Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts both sit at 6-5 ahead of a highly-anticipated AFC South matchup Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. This a must-win for both teams as they try to keep pace with Houston for the division and the tight race for the AFC wild card as well.

If the Colts want to get back on track after a long week, here are six Titans the Colts must game plan for in the Week 13 divisional matchup.

(Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports)

QB Ryan Tannehill

After winning four of their last five, Tannehill seems to be the short-term solution in Tennessee. Getting after him and forcing him to make rushed throws will be key for the Colts in this one. With the ability to spread the ball to a variety of receivers, shutting down Tannehill will be vital to a victory.

The Colts must also be aware of Tannehill’s ability as a runner, which is an underrated aspect of his game.

RB Derrick Henry

November-Henry is a real thing. The fourth-year back has been criticized throughout his career for being inconsistent on a week to week basis but in the month of November, Henry has been very productive during his time in Tennessee.

The Colts will have to shut down Henry in order to throw the entire offense off track in this one. When the Titans get the run game going, their offense becomes a lot more threatening.

WR A.J. Brown

The rookie receiver has been a great addition to this offense. With the size to go over the top of defenders and the speed to create separation, Brown has emerged as one of the best young receivers in the game.

Look for Pierre Desir to matchup against Brown on Sunday, mostly because of a size comparison. Don’t be surprised if Malik Hooker or Marvel Tell matchup against Brown as well.

(Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports)

LB Rashaan Evans

Leading the team in tackles with 85 on the year, Evans is one of the better linebackers in all of football. His run stopping ability is incredible and his speed makes it easy for him to cover tight ends as well. With Eric Ebron being placed on IR on Monday, Jack Doyle and others will have to find success after a lackluster performance in Houston.

CB Logan Ryan

Ryan has been dominant throughout his entire career, filling up a stat sheet week to week. His line on the year is 78 total tackles, three interceptions, three forced fumbles, 16 passes defended and 3.5 sacks. Ryan will most likely be on T.Y. Hilton all game as Hilton tries to bounce back after a pitiful performance against Houston.

LB Harold Landry III

The other linebacker in the Titans talented duo is Landry. Where Evans is more utilized in the passing game, Landry is moved all around the field and is a talented pass rusher. With eight sacks on the season, it will be crucial for the Colts to stop Landry blitzing up the middle in order to give Brissett time in the pocket.
