Chargers’ Russell Okung to be limited in practice

Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Russell Okung will be limited in practice this week.

Offensive tackle Russell Okung, who suffered a groin injury Sunday, will be limited as the Los Angeles Chargers begin their preparation for an AFC West battle against the Oakland Raiders.

Coach Anthony Lynn on Wednesday said Okung will get treatment this week and that he will get limited snaps at practice.

Okung suffered the injury right before the half in which he was chasing a Vikings defender who recovered a fumble and he went down awkwardly reaching for the groin area. He did not return to the game.

The left tackle has battled a groin injury for over a month, so it appears that he may have re-aggravated it.

His status for this weekend’s game will likely be 50-50. If he can’t go, Trent Scott could very well get the start. But it’s possible that the team could let rookie Trey Pipkins, who has been a healthy scratch the past two games, get some playing time.

Instant analysis from Chargers’ 39-10 loss to Vikings

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez delivers his final thoughts from the Los Angeles Chargers’ 39-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

There wasn’t a lot that went in the Los Angeles Chargers’ favor against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon.

Here is our instant analysis from the Chargers’ 39-10 loss to the Vikings.

Injury Report

Left tackle Russell Okung got hurt right before the end of the half on the Vikings’ fumble return for a touchdown. Okung attempted a tackle, but he came up limping. Okung, who was ruled as questionable with a groin injury, did not return to the game.

Play of the Game: Melvin Ingram’s interception

Following an interception thrown by quarterback Philip Rivers, Ingram picked up his teammate by picking off Kirk Cousins with less than a minute left in the second quarter. That marked Ingram’s second interception of his professional career.

Notable Number

7: There was nothing positive on the offensive side of the ball. The Chargers committed seven turnovers on the afternoon. The last time they did that was in the 1999 season.

Quick Takes

  • Coming off his best performance last weekend, quarterback Philip Rivers was unable to match that outing. Rivers resorted back to his reckless ways, tossing three interceptions and wasn’t able to secure the football, which turned into a strip-sack that went for a touchdown.
  • The offensive line was a mixed bag. They allowed three sacks, but one of them was a result of Rivers holding onto the ball too long when he had plenty of time to throw. Trent Scott replaced Russell Okung at left tackle, when this would have been a perfect time for rookie Trey Pipkins, who was ruled out, to get snaps.
  • Running back Melvin Gordon struggled immensely on the ground today. Gordon only managed to amass 28 yards on seven carries, but he fumbled twice today, both of which were recovered by the defense.
  • Gordon’s poor showing was noted by the coaching staff. As a result, he was benched for a good chunk of the second half in favor of Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson. The decision to bench Gordon shows the loss of trust in the former Wisconsin product.
  • The passing defense did a great job by keeping everything underneath for the most part, not allowing explosive plays, which the Vikings have excelled at this season. Quarterback Kirk Cousins finished with only 207 yards.
  • The run defense was stellar against a dynamic Dalvin Cook. Once Cook went down with an injury, they struggled to stop his backup, Mike Boone, who went for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Their struggles came from lack of gap integrity and missed tackles.

6 Chargers to watch vs. Jaguars

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez lays out the six most important Chargers players to watch against the Jaguars.

The Los Angeles Chargers are hours away from kicking off against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Here are six players that could have a big determination of the outcome of the game.

RB Melvin Gordon

After a slow start to the season, Gordon has been riding the hot hand and now he will have a huge opportunity to cash in his best game yet, facing a defense that has allowed 5.1 yards per carry and three 100+ yard rushing games, and two multi-touchdown games.

OL Dan Feeney

Feeney has had an up and down season, but he will have to be on his A-game against four-time Pro Bowler, Calais Campbell. Campbell leads the Jaguars with 19 quarterback hits, 11 quarterback knockdowns and 27 pressures this season.

OT Russell Okung

Not only will Feeney and the other members on the interior have to be stout, but so will the veteran left tackle as he will have to keep rookie Josh Allen from quarterback Philip Rivers’ blindside. Allen leads the team with nine sacks, pressures with 36 and in tackles for loss with 10.

DE Joey Bosa

Believe it or not, but Bosa has not posted a sack in the past three games after amassing 8.5 in the first nine. He will have a good opportunity to get back on track facing an offensive tackle group that has struggled to find its groove. Not only will Bosa look to acquire a sack or two, but force the ball out of quarterback Gardner Minshew’s hands as he’s struggled with fumbling.

LB Drue Tranquill

With LB Denzel Perryman out, Tranquill will take over as the team’s starting MIKE. Tranquill has been one of the best run defenders and he will need to stay hot facing running back Leonard Fournette, who has been running wild in his third season as a pro.

CB Casey Hayward

Hayward will be looking to bounce back after one of his worst performances of the season. It won’t be an easy task facing wide receiver D.J. Chark, who has a knack for explosive plays. Chark should benefit from Minshew behind center as he averages more yards per reception and has caught five touchdown passes with the rookie at quarterback.

Report: Chargers OT Russell Okung expected to play vs. Broncos

The Chargers get quarterback Philip Rivers’ security blanket back for Week 13 against the Broncos.

Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Russell Okung is expected to play against the Denver Broncos in Week 13, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

After missing two games with a groin injury, Okung will return to the starting lineup to protect quarterback Philip Rivers’ blindside.

Rivers struggled under pressure in those two contests, so having Okung back out there should be a confidence booster for Rivers.

With Okung coming back, rookie Trey Pipkins will likely go back to the bench.

Right tackle Sam Tevi, who’s missed the last three games with a knee injury, remains an unknown for today’s game. If Tevi can’t play, Trent Scott will resume the starting duties on the right side in place of him.

6 things to watch in Chargers vs. Broncos

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez lays out six things to watch when the Chargers take on the Broncos in Week 13.

The Chargers return to action on the road as they’re set to take on the Denver Broncos following their bye.

Here are six things to watch in Sunday’s bout.

1. Will Philip Rivers turn things around?

Rivers isn’t having the season that he was anticipating in the final year of his contract, as he’s tossed 14 interceptions, seven in the last two games. The veteran quarterback is eager to overcome his woes, but it won’t be easy facing a Broncos defense that picked him off twice in their first meeting this season. In his last three games against Denver, Rivers has thrown three touchdowns and six interceptions.

2. Offensive tackle situation

Despite playing their best game with two backup tackles in Week 11, we saw Rivers look uncomfortable and rushed, largely due to the fact that he doesn’t trust them. If the Chargers want the most out of Philip Rivers, he has to trust the guys up front, and that means that his security blanket will have to be playing — left tackle Russell Okung. Okung and right tackle Sam Tevi are both questionable. Regardless, stopping linebacker Von Miller will be key to their victory since the offense has struggled recently.

3. Change at quarterback

The Broncos will likely have their third quarterback change this season, as rookie Drew Lock is set to take over under center. Lock is coming back from a thumb injury, which landed him on the injured reserve to start the season. In the three preseason games he completed 31-of-51 passes for 254 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Lock should have a warm welcoming from the presence of defensive ends Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram, who face an offensive line that’s struggled to find consistency.

4. Derwin James and Adrian Phillips

The Chargers officially activated James and Phillips off the injured reserve on Saturday, which means that they will play tomorrow. With James back in the lineup, he will take over for Jaylen Watkins at strong safety. Phillips will resume his duties as the team’s dime linebacker. As for Watkins, he will still get snaps. It’s possible they could put him in the slot, and utilize Desmond King outside.

5. Slowing down Phillip Lindsay

The Broncos may take a little bit to get into a groove in the passing game with Lock making his debut, which means that they will resort to their offensive playmaker to find success. Lindsay had his best rushing performance of the season, amassing 111 yards rushing and 147 total yards in Week 5. But the Chargers have been stout against the run in their last three games, allowing 84.3 rushing yards per contest.

6. Wide receiver-cornerback battles

All eyes will be on wide receiver Keenan Allen and cornerback Chris Harris Jr. as Allen is looking to bounce back from his underwhelming performance in which he only had four receptions for 18 yards. But the matchup between WR Courtland Sutton and CB Casey Hayward deserves your attention.

Sutton finished with four receptions and a touchdown for 92 yards in the first meeting. He currently has 16.6 yards per catch, ranking 10th in the NFL. Meanwhile, Hayward has allowed only one catch over the last four games and has given up a reception on just 47.2% of his targets this season.

4 matchups to watch in Chargers vs. Broncos

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez lists the four matchups to watch when the Chargers take on the Broncos in Week 13.

The Los Angeles Chargers (4-7) take on the Denver Broncos (3-8) in Week 13 of the 2019 regular season.

Here are four matchups to keep an eye on that could ultimately determine the outcome of the game.

Chargers QB Philip Rivers vs. Broncos secondary

In the first meeting of the season, Rivers’ performance wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows as he was held to 211 passing yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions. Since then, has accumulated 14 interceptions on the season and is looking to get back on track, but it won’t be easy facing a stout Broncos secondary.

Led by cornerback Chris Harris Jr. and safety Justin Simmons, Denver hasn’t made life easy on opposing quarterbacks, allowing only 207.5 passing yards per game, which ranks fifth in the NFL. Although they’re strong in this area, they haven’t been able to take the ball away, totaling only 10 takeaways this season.

Rivers, who’s been susceptible to making poor decisions and throwing the ball to whoever in hopes of them coming down with the catch, can’t do that on Sunday or else they will make him pay. Rivers has thrown six interceptions the past three games that the two teams have played against each other.

Chargers injury update: 2 players limited

Here is a look at today’s injury report:

After being listed as limited on Wednesday, linebacker Thomas Davis and wide receiver Mike Williams went back to being full participants.

Offensive tackles Russell Okung and Sam Tevi remained as limited participants for the second consecutive day.

Safeties Derwin James and Adrian Phillips have continued to practice. But their status for this weekend’s game is unknown.

First injury report for Chargers ahead of matchup vs. Broncos

The Los Angeles Chargers released their first injury report ahead of the Week 13 matchup against the Denver Broncos.

Fresh off their bye, the Los Angeles Chargers started practicing to get ready for their Week 13 matchup against the Denver Broncos.

Here is a look at the first injury report of the week:

Every single player on the roster practiced in some sort of fashion Wednesday. There were four players that were limited participants — linebacker Thomas Davis (knee), wide receiver Mike Williams (knee) and offensive tackles Russell Okung (groin) and Sam Tevi (knee).

It’s promising to see Okung and Tevi back out on the field. Tevi, who had a minor procedure on his knee, has been out since Week 9. Meanwhile, Okung has missed the last two games. Trey Pipkins and Trent Scott have started in place of the two.

Williams dealt with a knee issue earlier this season. It’s likely that he will be good to go for Sunday’s contest, but it’s something worth monitoring throughout the course of the week.
