Chargers will be without OT Russell Okung vs. Chiefs

Chargers offensive tackle Russell Okung’s season has come to an end.

Chargers offensive tackle Russell Okung’s 2019 season has come to an end.

Okung will not play this weekend against the Chiefs due to a groin injury, which marks the second consecutive game that he missed due to the issue.

Okung, who’s been dealing with this for over a month now, re-aggravated it on an attempted tackle in the Week 15 loss to the Vikings. Coach Anthony Lynn said that rookie Trey Pipkins will start at left tackle, but Trent Scott will get some playing time, too.

It wasn’t the series of events that Okung was anticipating this season. The veteran tackle had been sidelined to start the season due to a pulmonary embolism that was discovered in June. That was followed up with the groin issue a few games into his season debut.

Okung has one more year remaining on his contract with Los Angeles.

Chargers’ Russell Okung to be limited in practice

Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Russell Okung will be limited in practice this week.

Offensive tackle Russell Okung, who suffered a groin injury Sunday, will be limited as the Los Angeles Chargers begin their preparation for an AFC West battle against the Oakland Raiders.

Coach Anthony Lynn on Wednesday said Okung will get treatment this week and that he will get limited snaps at practice.

Okung suffered the injury right before the half in which he was chasing a Vikings defender who recovered a fumble and he went down awkwardly reaching for the groin area. He did not return to the game.

The left tackle has battled a groin injury for over a month, so it appears that he may have re-aggravated it.

His status for this weekend’s game will likely be 50-50. If he can’t go, Trent Scott could very well get the start. But it’s possible that the team could let rookie Trey Pipkins, who has been a healthy scratch the past two games, get some playing time.

Report: Chargers OT Russell Okung expected to play vs. Broncos

The Chargers get quarterback Philip Rivers’ security blanket back for Week 13 against the Broncos.

Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Russell Okung is expected to play against the Denver Broncos in Week 13, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

After missing two games with a groin injury, Okung will return to the starting lineup to protect quarterback Philip Rivers’ blindside.

Rivers struggled under pressure in those two contests, so having Okung back out there should be a confidence booster for Rivers.

With Okung coming back, rookie Trey Pipkins will likely go back to the bench.

Right tackle Sam Tevi, who’s missed the last three games with a knee injury, remains an unknown for today’s game. If Tevi can’t play, Trent Scott will resume the starting duties on the right side in place of him.

Chargers’ Russell Okung out of practice while rehabbing groin strain

Chargers offensive tackle Russell Okung did not practice on Tuesday and his status for Week 11 is questionable.

Following Thursday night’s game, Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said that offensive tackle Russell Okung’s status for the Monday night game against the Chiefs would be up in the air. Fast forward five days later, and it appears to be the same way.

Okung left the Week 10 matchup against the Raiders after only playing seven snaps with a groin injury and did not return to the game.

“He’s rehabbing. He’s working on the side. We’ll see where he’s at. .I’d love to see him play, but if he can’t go, he won’t go,” Lynn said, per The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.

If Okung is forced to miss Week 11, rookie Trey Pipkins will get the start at left tackle, while Trent Scott will fill in at right tackle for Sam Tevi, who underwent a minor surgery on his meniscus last Friday and could miss a couple weeks.

Pipkins and Scott will get a full week to prepare before facing a Chiefs front that leads the league in sacks (52).
