Chargers OL Jamaree Salyer questionable to return vs. Chiefs

Jamaree Salyer exited the game with an eye injury.

Even Week 18 has not provided a safe harbor for the Chargers.

Starting guard Jamaree Salyer exited the game late in the first quarter with what the team called an eye injury. It’s unclear when the injury occurred, but such a designation suggests that Salyer was likely poked in the eye during a blocking assignment.

Salyer has started every game for the Chargers this season at right guard. He was replaced by Austen Pleasants, who was elevated from the practice squad for the game.

Chargers DT Austin Johnson activated from PUP list, returns to practice

The Chargers return a key cog in the middle of the defensive line.

Chargers defensive tackle Austin Johnson was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list after he passed his physical and practiced in individual drills on Thursday.

“Now we just have to build back up and make sure that we take our time,” Staley said on Johnson. “But definitely a good sign for us that he is back.”

Johnson suffered a fractured knee and MCL injury in Los Angeles’ Week 9 win over the Falcons and spent the remainder of the 2022 season on injured reserve.

Before he got hurt, Johnson was a cog in the middle of the defensive line. He was tied for the team lead in run stops with 14 and led the team in run stop percentage at 11.4%.

Having him back on the field will be critical as the Bolts look to improve their run defense from last season. They finished 27th, allowing 144.2 yards rushing per game.

Chargers WR Mike Williams questionable to return vs. Broncos

Perhaps the Chargers should’ve rested more starters.

Perhaps the Chargers should’ve rested more starters.

With the Ravens’ loss to the Bengals, Los Angeles is locked into the five seed in the AFC playoffs. There’s nothing to play for against the Broncos except pride and momentum.

Even so, Brandon Staley elected to have most starters suit up and play. In the second quarter, that decision started to backfire. Joey Bosa limped off the field after appearing to reaggravate his surgically repaired groin. Then, Mike Williams limped off the field with a back injury and did not rejoin the offensive unit for their last drive of the first half. He is questionable to return.

It’s a potentially costly move for Staley and the Chargers, who are deadset on playing the Jaguars next week no matter what. Even after the injuries, starters Justin Herbert, Austin Ekeler, and Keenan Allen were still on the field to end the first half.

Injury updates on Chargers’ Mike Williams, Chris Rumph II

Brandon Staley provided an update on Mike Williams and Chris Rumph on Monday.

The Chargers were hit with a few injuries during the Week 7 loss to the Seahawks.

The most notable was cornerback J.C. Jackson, who suffered a ruptured patellar tendon, and as a result, will miss the remainder of the season.

But Jackson wasn’t the only player who sustained an injury throughout the game.

Wide receiver Mike Williams suffered a high ankle sprain and will miss “weeks, not days,” according to Brandon Staley. Staley did not put a specific timeframe on Williams’ return.

Edge defender Chris Rumph II also got hurt late in the game and was diagnosed with an MCL sprain. As a result, Rumph will be out for weeks.

The Chargers are on a bye week this Sunday, allowing players who are banged up to heal. The injury bug has bit Los Angeles hard this season, so that time should be valuable.

Chargers’ J.C. Jackson, Corey Linsley not practicing for second straight day

The Chargers were without two of their keys for the second straight day as they prepare for their Week 3 matchup with the Jaguars.

The Chargers were without two of their key players for the second straight day as they prepare for their Week 3 matchup with the Jaguars.

Cornerback J.C. Jackson and center Corey Linsley were not on the practice field on Thursday.

Jackson is coming off his debut with Los Angeles after recovering from a minor ankle procedure he had before the start of the season.

On Wednesday, head coach Brandon Staley said that Jackson is sore from last Thursday night’s game against the Chiefs.

Linsley suffered a knee injury in the loss to Kansas City, which caused him to miss the entire second half.

If Jackson has to miss this weekend’s game against Jacksonville, Michael Davis and Asante Samuel Jr. will start on the outside, while Will Clapp will start at center in place of Linsley.

Chargers’ Brandon Staley gives encouraging update on Justin Herbert

After having the past five days off, Chargers HC Brandon Staley provided an update on QB Justin Herbert.

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley provided some positive news regarding quarterback Justin Herbert ahead of Wednesday’s practice.

Staley said Herbert is day to day, adding that he has gotten a lot of rest, is feeling more comfortable, and was able to do light throwing and rotational work on Tuesday.

Staley also said that Herbert will participate in individual drills while wearing a rib protector.

Herbert suffered a fracture to his rib cartilage after being hit by defensive end Mike Danna in the fourth quarter of the Week 2 loss to the Chiefs.

With four more days until its matchup with the Jaguars, Los Angeles will use these next few practices to determine whether Herbert is OK to play.

“We’re going to listen to Justin,” Staley said. “The players are at the front of all decisions we make since I’ve become the head coach… And then making sure we have alignment with the medical team.”

Nonetheless, after having the past five days off, it’s encouraging to hear that Herbert is progressing well.

Staley provided additional injury updates:

Wide receiver Keenan Allen (hamstring), tight end Donald Parham (hamstring), center Corey Linsley (knee) and right tackle Trey Pipkins (ankle/foot) are all “day to day.”

Corey Linsley questionable to return vs. Chiefs with knee injury

The Chargers’ starting center has a knee injury.

One of the linchpins of the Chargers’ offensive line might be out for the second half against Kansas City.

Per the official team, center Corey Linsley is questionable to return against the Chiefs with a knee injury.

It’s unclear when Linsley suffered the injury. Will Clapp entered the game to start the second half, but Linsley did not miss a play in the first half of action.

If Linsley does not return, expect Clapp to be the center for the rest of the game. The third-string center is typically Brenden Jaimes, but he was a healthy scratch for today’s game.

The Chargers lead the Chiefs 17-7 in the third quarter.

Checking in on the status of Chargers OT Bryan Bulaga

The Chargers remain hopeful that Bryan Bulaga can still return at some point this season.

Offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga was on a clear path to a fresh start after spending most of his first season with the Chargers on the sidelines. But, unfortunately, that did not come to fruition.

After playing just two quarters in the season opener against Washington, Bulaga suffered an injury that landed him on the injured reserve.

It has been over a month since Bulaga had surgery on his core muscle, and the question still looms whether or not he will play again this season.

Head coach Brandon Staley said the team is still hopeful that Bulaga returns at some point, adding that they’re right towards the end of maybe initiating that time frame to get him activated.

Earlier in November, Staley said that Bulaga started working out on the practice field, but he still had a ways to go.

In the meantime, Storm Norton will remain the team’s starting right tackle. In 11 games, Norton has allowed 39 pressures and five sacks.

Bulaga signed a three-year, $30 million contract last year with the hopes of supplying sustainability. But considering how his tenure with the team has played out, cutting him and saving $11 million against the cap is a possibility.

The Chargers could then address the right tackle position early in next year’s draft or sign another veteran to fill the void.

Chargers injury update vs. Eagles

Quarterback Justin Herbert returned to practice while four players did not.

The Los Angeles Chargers had their second practice ahead of the Week 9 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

After being limited with a right hand injury on Wednesday, quarterback Justin Herbert returned to practice in a full capacity.

However, all four of the players who did not participate yesterday remained sidelined for the second consecutive day.

If cornerbacks Michael Davis and Asante Samuel Jr. are unable to play, Ryan Smith and Tevaughn Campbell would replace the two.

If Alohi Gilman can’t play, Mark Webb is likely to see an uptick in snaps.

If running back Justin Jackson can’t go, Joshua Kelley and Larry Rountree would split the carries behind Austin Ekeler.

The Chargers have their final practice on Friday before flying out to Philadelphia.

Chargers WR Mike Williams on knee injury: ‘Everything is good’

Chargers WR Mike Williams seems to be at full health heading into Week 8 against the Patriots.

Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams has been dealing with a knee injury since the Week 5 victory over the Browns.

Following the game, head coach Brandon Staley said Williams had some swelling in his knee, which kept him out of practice the entire week leading up to the Week 6 matchup with the Ravens.

Although he was listed as questionable heading into the contest, Williams played but caught only two of five targets for 27 yards in the blowout loss.

The star-studded receiver exited the game before halftime but returned in the third quarter. Williams was on the sidelines during the fourth quarter. However, it was unclear whether that was because of his injury or how the game panned out.

Upon returning from the bye, Williams told the media on Monday that “everything is good” with his knee. He experienced tightness in his knee before the game against the Ravens, but it seems that the week off was sufficient time for it to recover.

“I don’t really feel it anymore,” Williams said. “I’m solid.”

In six games played, Williams has 33 catches for 498 yards and six touchdowns.
