Remembering 10 favorite Bears training camp players

With Bears training camp 2023 well underway, let’s remember some former standouts that became fan favorites in previous years.

Chicago Bears training camp is well underway and fans are getting a close look at the team as they prepare for the upcoming 2023 season. Star players like Justin Fields, D.J. Moore, Tremaine Edmunds, and Jaylon Johnson are of course the focus as the team looks to improve upon its dismal 3-14 record from a year ago, but camp is also about finding those undrafted players near the bottom of the roster that can turn heads.

Guys like Terrell Lewis, Aron Cruickshank, and Buddy Johnson have stood out at different times already. Camp is a prime opportunity for players to make a name for themselves, which in turn gets fans excited about what they’re seeing on the field. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and remember some former Bears training camp and preseason standouts who may not have been household names.

4 things to know about new Jets WR Rodney Adams

Get to know Rodney Adams, who signed a reserve/future contract with the Jets earlier this week.

The Jets signed 12 players to future/reserve deals earlier this week in an effort to bolster their depth heading into the offseason.

Among those to sign with New York was wide receiver Rodney Adams. The 27-year-old took a somewhat unique path to the NFL, as a personal tragedy led to a major change in his college football career before he ascended to the professional ranks.

Here are four things to know about Adams.

Bears announce roster moves ahead of Week 13 matchup vs. Cardinals

The Bears activated Teven Jenkins from IR and flexed 2 players from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game vs. Cardinals.

The Chicago Bears (4-7) are gearing up for a matchup against the Arizona Cardinals (9-2), where Chicago faces a challenge against an Arizona team with the best record in the NFC.

Ahead of Sunday’s game against the Cardinals, the Bears made several roster moves on the active roster and practice squad, which includes rookie offensive tackle Teven Jenkins being activated off injured reserve.

Here’s a look at the roster moves the Bears made on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s game vs. the Cardinals:

5 bold predictions for Bears vs. Cardinals

From big outings from Robert Quinn and Jaylon Johnson to a surprise at receiver, our bold predictions as the Bears battle the Cardinals.

The Chicago Bears set out this weekend to do something they’ve only done once this season when they take on the Arizona Cardinals, and that’s win two games in a row.

The last time the Bears had a winning streak came in early October, which was also started after a victory over the Lions. But they face a Cardinals team that’s rested and healing up.

The 9-2 Cardinals are coming off a bye week and will presumably get quarterback Kyler Murray and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins back from injury. The Bears, meanwhile, will be without Justin Fields for another game, meaning Andy Dalton gets the start once again.

With the Cardinals vying for homefield advantage in the postseason race, this could be a game that gets ugly early. But I’m predicting a close one on the lakefront for a number of reasons. Here are my bold predictions for Sunday’s matchup.

Bears’ Rodney Adams, Isaiah Coulter could see action if Allen Robinson can’t play vs. Ravens

If Allen Robinson (doubtful) can’t play, Matt Nagy said Rodney Adams and Isaiah Coulter could be brought up as depth pieces for Bears.

It’s been a brutal day of injuries for the Chicago Bears, who have lost star outside linebacker Khalil Mack for the season with a foot injury and will be without defensive tackle Akiem Hicks and receiver Allen Robinson against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

While Robinson hasn’t been a big part of Chicago’s offense this season — then again, no one has — he was coming off his best game of the season with four catches for 68 yards, where it looked like he was starting to get in sync with rookie quarterback Justin Fields.

Unfortunately, he also suffered a hamstring injury in that Steelers game, which has him doubtful for Week 11.

With Robinson likely out, that leaves Darnell Mooney, Marquise Goodwin and Damiere Byrd as the only receivers on the active roster available for Sunday.

That means the Bears will turn to the practice squad, where Matt Nagy said guys like preseason darling Rodney Adams and Isaiah Coulter could be flexed as depth pieces for Chicago if Robinson can’t play.

Granted, the Bears passing game has made it difficult for the starters to get much production, let alone some practice squad players.

But with Fields coming off his best game, where Chicago really let him open things up downfield, we could see the Bears attack downfield more than usual. If that’s the case, maybe Adams or Coulter could see a target.

It certainly doesn’t hurt that both worked with Fields during training camp and preseason, especially Adams, so there’s already a connection there.

Bear Necessities: Rodney Adams is back…on the practice squad

After making the initial 53-man roster and then being waived, WR Rodney Adams is back with the Bears…on the practice squad, that is.

This is our online morning newsletter, Bear Necessities. Subscribe to get the latest Bears news delivered to your mailbox every day.

Following an impressive training camp and even better preseason, under-the-radar wide receiver Rodney Adams made a strong case of a spot on the Bears’ 53-man roster. So when Adams made Chicago’s initial 53-man roster on Tuesday — as the fifth wide receiver — the feel-good story of the summer came to fruition.

Well, that feel-good story lasted just one day as the Bears waived Adams on Wednesday to make room for receiver Nsimba Webster, who the team had claimed off waivers.

The move itself was shocking considering Adams, who no doubt had played his way onto the roster. But with the Bears in need of a punt returner, the Webster move made a ton of sense. Only, at the expense of Adams. And surely the decision to sign veteran Breshad Perriman (which is still in progress) factored in.

When the Bears built their initial 13-player practice squad they left three vacant spots, one of which was being held for Adams, who cleared waivers Wednesday and was signed to the practice squad soon after.

Perhaps we haven’t seen the last of Adams, who could be another focal point of training camp and preseason come next season.

Breaking down the Bears’ latest roster moves

The Bears made quite a few roster moves on Wednesday, which we’re breaking down right here.

The Chicago Bears have been busy over the last couple of days, finalizing their initial 53-man roster, placing players on injured reserves, bringing back players on the active roster and building their practice squad.

Following the initial 53-man roster, the Bears made six roster moves — with one more in progress — on the 53-man roster on Wednesday, as well as brought back plenty of familiar faces on the practice squad.

Here’s a look at all the roster moves Chicago made on Wednesday:

Twitter reacts to Bears waiving WR Rodney Adams

Twitter was not happy with the Bears waiving WR Rodney Adams just one day after they were celebrating him making the 53-man roster.

The Bears’ feel-good story of the summer is over as preseason darling Rodney Adams has been waived, the team announced Wednesday.

Adams made the initial 53-man roster as the fifth wide receiver following an impressive preseason, where he made some great catches and built a rapport with rookie quarterback Justin Fields. If Adams clears waivers, the Bears will likely bring him back on the practice squad.

As you can imagine, Bears Twitter was not happy with the move just one day after they were celebrating Adams making the 53-man roster. While there was mostly outrage and confusion from fans, there were others that weren’t as surprised following the roster moves made in bringing in wide receivers Breshad Perriman and Nsimba Webster.

Bears waive WR Rodney Adams

Rodney Adams spent exactly one day on the Bears’ 53-man roster before the team waived him.

Wide receiver Rodney Adams, the feel good story of the summer, was on the Bears’ 53-man roster for exactly one day before the team waived him on Wednesday.

Adams impressed throughout training camp and preseason, where he made a strong case for a roster spot. He was the fifth receiver on Chicago’s initial 53-man roster, and the only receiver who had a good rapport with rookie quarterback Justin Fields, who is expected to take over at some point this season.

The Bears cut Adams to make room on the roster for one of two new receivers — Breshad Perriman or Nsimba Webster, both of whom are new to the roster. With three practice squad slots still up for grabs, Adams figures to occupy one of those.

Chicago also officially moved linebacker Danny Trevathan and offensive tackle Teven Jenkins to injured reserve. Trevathan is on short-term IR, which means he can return as early as Week 4. The hope is Jenkins, who had back surgery a couple of weeks ago, can return at some point this season.

The Bears re-signed cornerback Artie Burns and safety Marqui Christian to the active roster.

Bears roster bubble: Which players helped their cause in the preseason finale?

Following the Bears’ Week 3 preseason win, here’s a look at which roster-bubble players impressed vs. Titans.

The Chicago Bears closed out the preseason with a 27-24 win over the Tennessee Titans, where there were plenty of players who stood out in positive ways.

With the final roster cuts set for Tuesday — where GM Ryan Pace will have to trim the roster from 80 to 53 — there were a handful of players who might’ve helped their chances in earning a spot on the 53-man roster — or the practice squad — with strong preseason outings against the Titans.

Following Chicago’s preseason finale win, here’s a look at which roster-bubble players helped their cause in Week 3.
