Remembering 10 favorite Bears training camp players

With Bears training camp 2023 well underway, let’s remember some former standouts that became fan favorites in previous years.

Chicago Bears training camp is well underway and fans are getting a close look at the team as they prepare for the upcoming 2023 season. Star players like Justin Fields, D.J. Moore, Tremaine Edmunds, and Jaylon Johnson are of course the focus as the team looks to improve upon its dismal 3-14 record from a year ago, but camp is also about finding those undrafted players near the bottom of the roster that can turn heads.

Guys like Terrell Lewis, Aron Cruickshank, and Buddy Johnson have stood out at different times already. Camp is a prime opportunity for players to make a name for themselves, which in turn gets fans excited about what they’re seeing on the field. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and remember some former Bears training camp and preseason standouts who may not have been household names.

Former Bills WR Tanner Gentry signs with Toronto Argonauts

Former #Bills WR Tanner Gentry signs with Toronto Argonauts:

The Buffalo Bills have lost a depth wide receiver to the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL.

The team announced the signing of Tanner Gentry on Tuesday. Gentry posted the update himself on his social media account on Twitter and said “new chapter” regarding the update:

Gentry, 28, has spent parts of the past two seasons in Buffalo. In college, Gentry played alongside Bills quarterback Josh Allen at Wyoming. He went on to sign with the Chicago Bears following the 2017 NFL draft, the year before Allen was a first-round pick by Buffalo.

During his time in Buffalo, Gentry was on the practice squad. He was active for three games in 2022 but did not record a catch and only had one target.

Gentry’s position on the Bills practice squad was considered to be due to his close relationship with Allen. But with Gentry not venturing far up to Toronto, the two won’t be too far apart.

Because of Gentry’s final standing in 2022 as a member of the taxi squad, he was able to sign in the CFL prior to the start of free agency in March.

Bills bring in Tanner Gentry, former Josh Allen teammate, for workout

WR Tanner Gentry has workout with Buffalo Bills.

The Buffalo Bills held a workout with free agent Tanner Gentry, who’s a close friend of the team’s quarterback, Josh Allen. The move was listed on the NFL’s transaction list on Wednesday. Gentry was a former teammate of Allen’s at the University of Wyoming and one of his wide receivers there in 2016.

Gentry was an undrafted rookie free agent signee of the Chicago Bears in 2017, the year before the Bills selected Allen with the No. 7 overall pick at the following draft.

Following his rookie training camp, Gentry made the Bears’ practice squad for two-straight seasons in 2017 and 2018. He did briefly see playing time in the NFL in his rookie season, appearing in four games and making three starts. Gentry hauled in three catches for 35 yards combined in those appearances. Gentry has also played special teams. Earlier this year, he played in the XFL as well.

Gentry is the third wide receiver the Bills have been connected to just this past week. Kenny Stills had a free-agent visit with the Bills on Wednesday and Buffalo already added Gary Jennings to their practice squad.
