WATCH: Ricky Seals-Jones scores Washington’s first touchdown vs. Chiefs

Ricky Seals-Jones scores Washington’s first touchdown on the day.

The Washington Football Team trailed the Kansas City Chiefs 10-6 late in the first half despite multiple Kansas City turnovers. The latest Chiefs’ turnover gave Washington the ball near midfield with just under five minutes remaining.

The drive appeared in danger when Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke found running back J.D. McKissic on a third-and-16 for a first down into Kansas City territory.

Two plays, later Heinicke found a wide-open Ricky Seals-Jones for a 39-yard touchdown to give Washington a 13-10 lead with 1:18 remaining in the first half.

For Seals-Jones, who moved into the starting lineup last week after Logan Thomas went on injured reserve, it was his second touchdown of the season.

Seals-Jones spent the 2020 season on Kansas City’s roster behind Travis Kelce.

Seals-Jones leads Washington with four receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown midway through the third quarter.

Washington leads Chiefs 13-10 at halftime

Washington leads 13-10 at halftime after the defense forced three first-half turnovers.

The Washington Football Team leads the Kansas City Chiefs, 13-10, at halftime, in a game that many predicted would be the biggest shootout in Week 6.

Washington took possession of the ball first but went three-and-out. The Chiefs began their first drive on the five-yard line and methodically went 95 yards down the field to take a 7-3 lead.

Washington answered with a 50-yard field goal by Dustin Hopkins after quarterback Taylor Heinicke attempted a deep pass that fell incomplete on third down.

Then, a flurry of turnovers happened.

Mahomes was picked off at Washington’s six-yard line, just as it appeared the Chiefs would score. Washington did nothing with the ball, and Kansas City got the ball back and kicked a 52-yard field goal. Washington answered with another field goal.

On a second and 20, Kansas City wide receiver Mecole Hardman took the handoff from Mahomes and went across midfield before he was stripped of the football. Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke later found tight end Ricky Seals-Jones for a touchdown to give the WFT a 13-10 lead.

Mahomes went to work again, quickly taking the ball down the field and into Washington territory. However, Mahomes takes a snap, drops it, and then is pressured by Washington. Instead of taking the sack for a minimal loss, Mahomes threw an ill-advised pass that was picked off by Washington safety Bobby McCain to essentially end the first half.

Mahomes ended the first half completing 13 of 23 passes for 223 yards with two interceptions. Meanwhile, Heinicke completed 14 of 25 passes for 132 yards and one touchdown.

The Chiefs will receive to open the second half.

Quarterbacks

Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

$8,300 DRAFTKINGS
$9,000 FANDUEL

Who would have thought that we would be heading into Week 6 with the Chiefs in last place in the division sitting at 2-3? If there ever was an early-season, must-win game, this is it for the Chiefs. Mahomes hasn’t been the issue as he has averaged 28.8 DraftKings points per game through five weeks. The six interceptions are a bit worrisome, but the production is still there week in, week out. The matchup is great versus Washington, somehow they went from an elite defense in 2020 to one of the worst to start the season in 2021. They are currently allowing 293 passing yards per game, and Washington ranks 20th against opposing quarterbacks. Vegas has this over set to 55.5 with the Chiefs team total set at 31. This is a pass-first offense that will be putting up points with Mahomes leading the crew. Stack up this game from both sides as we not only have one of the best offenses, but two of the worst defenses facing off in Week 6.

Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers

$7,300 DRAFTKINGS
$8,000 FANDUEL

Is Herbert the best quarterback in the league right now? Do the Chargers have the best offensive weapons as a whole? These are the questions I’m starting to ask myself when watching Herbert and the Chargers. Herbert is averaging 27.2 DraftKings points per game, and there is simply nothing he can’t do on the field. He gets a juicy matchup versus the Baltimore Ravens, who are currently allowing 296.4 passing yards per game and 389.6 total yards. The Ravens won’t be able to stop Herbert and his elite counterparts. The combination of his skill set with those of Austin Ekeler, Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, and Jared Cook by his side makes me think we can pencil in another 300-yard performance in Week 6.

Running Backs

Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis Colts

$6,600 DRAFTKINGS
$7,500 FANDUEL

Game script is going to be heavily weighted in Taylor’s favor in Week 6. The Colts are favored by 10 (I do like the Houston Texans to cover), which should lead to a heavy dose of Taylor in this one. Taylor has only broken 100 yards once this season with only two rushing touchdowns, but this should be a game to pad the stats. The Texans are allowing 134.8 rushing yards and 391.8 total yards per game, so the Colts should be able to put up points and present Taylor with some red-zone opportunities. Taylor may end up popular, but I like the price and floor he provides in Week 6.

Antonio Gibson, Washington Football Team

$6,500 DRAFTKINGS
$6,700 FANDUEL

The game between Kansas City and Washington has a game stack written all over it. We have two bad defenses lining up in a game that currently has a total of 55 points. The price is right on Gibson, and we want shares of the Washington offense in Week 6. Most of my lineup builds will have one to two players from both teams and Gibson lines up as one of the best landing spots. The Chiefs currently rank 29th against opposing running backs and are allowing 141 rushing yards per game. The hope is for Gibson to not only be involved in the run game but also the passing game. With the Chiefs most likely carrying the lead in the second half, if Gibson is getting targets we could see a ceiling game from him where he goes for 25-plus points. As you will read below, I also like Terry McLaurin. I will go with one or the other in a lot of my builds and will rarely lock both.

Wide receivers

Tyreek Hill, Kansas City Chiefs

$8,500 DRAFTKINGS
$8,700 FANDUEL

The role of Tyreek has been somewhat boom or bust due to his price tag. Where if you had him in Week 1 or 4 you almost guaranteed to cash and the other weeks you had an uphill climb. When the targets are there, Hill, who has a minor quad injury, knows what to do with them. He has had a 40- and 50-point game already this year through five games, and the hope is another monster coming in Week 6. The Washington Football Team ranks 31st against opposing wide receivers and 27th in total yards allowed. We are talking about one of the worst defenses in the league matching up versus one of the best offenses. This has the recipe for the Chiefs and Hill to go off in Week 6, and I don’t want to miss out. I think every team you make should have shares of this game in some capacity. This is a must-win spot, and I will be finding ways to get my Hill exposure in Week 6.

Terry McLaurin, Washington Football Team

$7,100 DRAFTKINGS
$7,400 FANDUEL

McLaurin is almost the identical play as Hill. He has had two monster and three sluggish games, but this one lines up to be a big one. Kansas City is almost as bad as the Washington defense. They rank 24th against wide receivers, allowing 296 passing yards and 437 total yards per game. If QB Taylor Heinicke can lead this offense while not turning over the ball, Washington should stay in this game long enough for most of the plays in this game to pay off. Vegas has the Chiefs winning by a touchdown in this one, which should force Washington to air it out for four quarters playing catch up. If you want to fade McLaurin, I also like Keenan Allen and DJ Moore in the same price range.

Tight ends

Mark Andrews, Baltimore Ravens

$5,200 DRAFTKINGS
$6,300 FANDUEL

We haven’t spoken much about the Ravens and Chargers matchup, but I can easily see this game outperforming the Chiefs game. These two offenses are elite and will trade punches for four quarters. Andrews is coming off a monster Week 5 in a comeback win versus the Indianapolis Colts. Andrews had 11 receptions on 13 targets combining for 147 yards receiving and two touchdowns. While I don’t expect that output this week, I do like the price tag and floor he provides in what should be another high-scoring contest against the Chargers at home. We have a total of 51.5 with Baltimore favored by three, so this game should be high scoring and close through four quarters. If Andrews can match what David Njoku just did to this Charger defense, I’m sure we will be happy with his seven-reception, 149-yard, one-touchdown performance.

Ricky Seals-Jones, Washington Football Team

$3,000 DRAFTKINGS
$5,000 FANDUEL

With Logan Thomas out and a juicy matchup versus the Chiefs, Seals-Jones should pay off his minimum-priced salary on both DraftKings and FanDuel. Ricky played 82 out of the 83 snaps and that kind of time on the field will lead to production. Please look above on how bad the Chiefs defense has been. We are talking about one of the worst in the league right now in a game that currently has a total of 55 points. The Chiefs should take an early lead here, which will have Washington playing from behind and forcing them to air it out to keep pace. RSJ is a tournament-only play, which could pay off nicely in Week 6.

Good luck in Week 6, and if you ever have any questions, please hit me up on Twitter!

Quarterback Taylor Heinicke is confident in tight end Ricky Seals-Jones

Taylor Heinicke believes Ricky Seals-Jones will step up in the absence of Logan Thomas.

The Washington Football Team will be without tight end Logan Thomas for the foreseeable future after Washington placed the veteran starter on injured reserve Wednesday.

Thomas injured his hamstring in Sunday’s Week 4 win over the Falcons after just five offensive plays. Veteran Ricky Seals-Jones replaced Thomas in the lineup and caught two passes for 19 yards on four targets.

Seals-Jones, 26, signed with Washington in the spring; he beat out other veterans to be Thomas’ primary backup this summer.

Now, the job belongs to him for at least three weeks. Quarterback Taylor Heinicke is certainly confident in Seals-Jones.

“We’re gonna miss him [Thomas], but it’s Ricky’s turn to come up, step up,” Heinicke said on Wednesday. “I thought he did a great job of stepping up against Atlanta, made some plays. You’ve seen him progress throughout training camp and throughout this year, blocking and making some plays. We feel very confident in Ricky going in there and getting the job done.”

Heinicke and Seals-Jones connected for one of the more clutch touchdowns in the NFL so far this season in Washington’s Week 2 win over the Giants.

Heinicke isn’t the type of quarterback to only throw to players he’s comfortable with. He’s throwing to everyone on the field at some point. So, Seals-Jones has a golden opportunity over the next few weeks.

Washington will miss Thomas both as a receiver and a blocker. The team will also use rookie John Bates, and there’s a good chance Sammis Reyes is active for the first time this week.

Ricky Seals-Jones, Jamin Davis receive top scores from Pro Football Focus

How well did Jonathan Allen and Taylor Heinicke grade out, according to Pro Football Focus?

There were plenty of heroes in the Washington Football Team’s 30-29 win over the New York Giants on Thursday night. Quarterback Taylor Heinicke is the first player that comes to mind. In addition to passing for 336 yards and two touchdowns, he led Washington on two fourth-quarter comeback drives.

Defensively, Washington wasn’t so great, although a couple of players stood out.

As they do each and every week, Pro Football Focus graded Washington’s top performers. Offensively, guard Brandon Scherff graded out well (81.8). However, it was backup tight end Ricky Seals-Jones who was the highest-graded player on Washington’s offense (95.3).

To be fair, Seals-Jones only played seven snaps, but did make an outstanding touchdown reception in the back of the end zone to give the WFT the lead late.

Heinicke (73.4), Terry McLaurin (75.5), Antonio Gibson (61.6) and Logan Thomas (55.0) were some of the other notable offensive grades. Despite two penalties, rookie right tackle Sam Cosmi checked in with a respectable grade (77.1). Cosmi really stands out in run blocking.

Defensively, rookie linebacker Jamin Davis led the way (89.0). He played 27 snaps and head coach Ron Rivera commented on Friday that Davis was much better in Week 2. He made one play that saved Washington four points.

Montez Sweat (84.4) and Jonathan Allen (82.4) were right behind Davis. Allen had a monster game, recording six tackles, including three for loss, and two sacks. Check out New York center Billy Price’s grade to see how much Allen dominated the interior.

Chase Young checked in with a lower grade (62.6).

Washington’s two lowest-rated defenders were safety Landon Collins (42.2) and cornerback William Jackson III (30.5). It was a far cry from Jackson’s opening week performance against the Chargers.

Studs and Duds from Washington’s 30-29 win vs. Giants

Here are our studs and duds from Washington’s thrilling victory over the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football.

The Washington Football Team defeated the New York Giants, 30-29, to kick off Week 2 on Thursday Night Football.

It was a wild game that came down to the final seconds. Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins lined up for the game-winner from 48 yards out, but he missed. However, New York defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence was offsides, and Hopkins got another chance—this time from 48 yards—and he nailed it, giving Washington its first win of the season.

Washington’s win featured plenty of heroics. It also featured some players who could have done more.

Here are our studs and duds from Washington’s Week 2 win over the Giants.

Washington vs. Giants game recap: Everything we know

Here is everything we know after Washington’s win over the New York Giants.

The Washington Football Team picked up a critical early-season win on Thursday by defeating the New York Giants, 30-29, on a last-second field goal by kicker Dustin Hopkins.

It was Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke’s third career NFL start — and his first win. Heinicke completed 28 of 38 passes for 336 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

It was another ugly performance from Washington’s defense. Washington allowed New York quarterback Daniel Jones to complete 22 of 32 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown. Jones also rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown.

However, in the end, Washington did enough to pick up its first victory of the season.

Here is everything we know after Washington’s win over the Giants.

Taylor Heinicke to Ricky Seals-Jones for spectacular Washington touchdown

Washington scores on a pass from Taylor Heinicke to Ricky Seals-Jones

Taylor Heinicke made the start Thursday against the New York Giants for the Washington Football team and delivered a spectacular pass to Ricky Seals-Jones in the fourth quarter.

Heinicke threw a strike to the tight end who made a great grab in the end zone for six points.

Watch as Seals-Jones, who made his first catch for the WFT on the play, goes up to get the football and comes down with both feet inbounds.

After the PAT, Washington held a 27-26 lead.

Heinicke was starting because Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered a hip injury in the WFT opener and will be lost for more than a month.

The play before the touchdown saw Heinicke hit J.D. McKissic on another nice play that wound up going for 56 yards.

Heinicke hit the 300-yard mark on the touchdown throw to Seals-Jones.

Former Chiefs TE Ricky Seals-Jones signs with Washington

Seals-Jones gets a new opportunity after his curious stint in Kansas City.

Another former Kansas City Chiefs tight end has wound up with the Washington Football Team this offseason.

Earlier in May, Washington added former Chiefs TE Deon Yelder to the mix. Now, they’ve added former Chiefs TE Ricky Seals-Jones creating quite the deep and competitive room that includes standout Logan Thomas, rookie John Bates and International Pathway player Sammis Reyes.

Seals-Jones, 26, enters his fifth year in the NFL after joining the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He made a stop in Cleveland in 2019 before joining the Chiefs ahead of the 2020 NFL season.

Seals-Jones’ story with Kansas City was a curious one. Many thought he’d be utilized as a red zone threat after his 2019 campaign with the Browns. He made the 53-man roster outright, but spent 16 weeks taking up a spot on the roster and was a healthy scratch most weeks. He only saw snaps in Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills and Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons. He was targeted once during those two games and didn’t make the catch.

The Chiefs still have a number of players who were on the 2020 team available as free agents. That list of players includes Alex Okafor, Bashaud Breeland, Le’Veon Bell, Mike Pennel, Daniel Kilgore and Stefen Wisniewski.

Washington signs veteran tight end Ricky Seals-Jones

The Washington Football Team signed veteran tight end Ricky Seals-Jones on Tuesday as they continue to add depth to the tight end room,

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbykgy681k112p8 player_id=none image=https://washingtonfootballwire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Washington Football Team signed veteran tight end Ricky Seals-Jones on Tuesday as they continue to add depth to the tight end room, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Seals-Jones, 26, is entering his fifth NFL season in 2021. He spent the 2020 season with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he appeared in just two games. Seals-Jones is the second former Kansas City tight end to sign with Washington in recent weeks, joining Deon Yelder.

Washington now has starting tight end Logan Thomas, international free-agent signing Sammis Reyes, fourth-round pick John Bates, Yelder, Seals-Jones, Temarrick Hemmingway and Tyrone Swoopes on the offseason roster.

Entering the offseason, depth at tight end was a priority. However, Washington never felt like it needed a high-end option as the team likes Thomas as the starter.

Clearly, head coach Ron Rivera feels comfortable bringing in several veteran options to compete with younger players like Bates and Reyes to give the WFT depth behind Thomas.

Seals-Jones entered the league in 2017 with the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent two seasons. He played for the Cleveland Browns in 2019 before signing with the Chiefs in 2020. His best season came in 2018 when he caught 34 passes for 343 yards and a touchdown. He scored four touchdowns with Cleveland in 2019.
