Quavo: Georgia’s Richard LeCounte is ‘steal of the draft’

Georgia Bulldogs safety Richard LeCounte is looking like one of the better picks in the 2021 NFL draft.

The Cleveland Browns selected Georgia Bulldogs safety Richard LeCounte with the 169th pick of the 2021 NFL draft. Now, LeCounte is already looking like a great pick for Cleveland.

Richard LeCounte’s impressive NFL preseason performances earner him a shoutout from famed musician and rapper Quavo.

Quavo proclaims, via Twitter, that Richard LeCounte is the steal of the 2021 NFL draft:

Quavo, who is the vocalist for the hip hop trio Migos, is a little bit biased toward the Georgia Bulldogs. Quavo was born in Athens, Georgia, has attended several Georgia football games over the years including a few big games that Richard LeCounte played in. He’s certainly one of the more famous celebrity fans of UGA.

So far, Richard LeCounte looks sharp in the NFL. He recorded an interception and deflected pass for the Cleveland Browns in his NFL preseason debut and then intercepted another pass in his second preseason game.

LeCounte was a ballhawk at Georgia and it looks like he will continue to be one in the NFL. LeCounte fell in the 2021 NFL draft due to concerns about his health after he suffered serious injuries in an traffic accident. When LeCounte is healthy, he has a knack for making the big play.

If Richard LeCounte can stay healthy throughout his NFL career, then he may end up as one of the best picks of the 2021 NFL draft.

Former Georgia safety Richard LeCounte is making a name for himself in the NFL. LeCounte was drafted by the Cleveland Browns this spring in what many consider as the steal of the draft.

LeCounte dropped all the way to the fifth round after being one of the top defensive backs in college football at Georgia. This preseason, LeCounte already has two interceptions in two games played.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski had only good things to say about LeCounte, who missed the end of his UGA career after being injured in a motorcycle accident.

“Ball finds a way to him, and he has great ball skills. Certainly did in college as well. To be able to get the ball at the end was important. We finished even in the turnover margin to be able to get that one to offset our previous giveaway (a Case Keenum interception).”

This comes as no surprise to people who watched LeCounte’s play closely. The Riceboro, Georgia, native has been a ballhawk ever since he graced the field as a Georgia Bulldog in 2017.

We are just a few days away from the 2021 NFL Draft which kicks off on Thursday night. For months we’ve seen mock drafts and prospect rankings swarm the media in preparation, bringing up some serious questions regarding UGA’s Richard LeCounte and his weirdly low draft stock.

LeCounte is hard to find on most draft boards and Pro Football Focus has the All-SEC first team safety out of their top-10 rankings at the position.

But why? Some will point to his speed. LeCounte averaged a 4.79 forty yard dash during Georgia’s pro day in March. Others point to his coverage skills, saying the lack of quickness will translate to matchup problems at the next level.

If we’re being honest here, these claims are unsubstantiated and in reality, just guesses.

LeCounte is one of the most productive defensive backs in Georgia football history. And at a defensive prowess like UGA, that’s saying something.

Before LeCounte’s motorcyle accident that kept him out for the latter part of 2020, the Riceboro, Ga., native racked up 26 tackles, a tackle for loss, a fumble recovery, two interceptions and four pass breakups in just five games played as the unquestioned leader of one of the top defenses in the country.

Matt Zenitz of AL.com spoke to 15 coaches that worked in the SEC last season and asked the question: Outside of the players widely projected to go in the first round, which SEC draft prospects would you most want on your team if you were an NFL general manager?

No surprise here, LeCounte finished tied for first place with five votes.

Zenitz quoted one of the responses,

“I thought he was lights out the best safety in the conference — his range, versatility, just his ability to command it back there,” a head coach said. “Not only was he skilled but he knew what was coming. He was prepared. He’s a vocal, physical, contact player who can get the ball out of the air. Can match in coverage. He’s got NFL three-dimensional versatility where he can play on the roof, can match in coverage and can fit the box. And if you have a fourth category, he can blitz from anywhere on the field. I thought he was dynamic. Did he play with a great supporting cast? Yeah. But I thought he led that supporting cast.”

LeCounte finished his career at UGA with 44 games played, racking up 165 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, 18 passes defended, four forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.

Georgia’s Richard LeCounte is headed to the NFL after a storied four-year career in Athens and surprisingly, Pro Football Focus has the 2020 First Team All-SEC safety ranked as the No. 15 safety on their 2021 NFL Draft board. 

LeCounte, the unquestioned leader of the Bulldogs defense for the last two seasons, reacted to PFF’s rankings via Twitter.

Those ranked ahead of LeCounte are:

In 44 games played at Georgia, LeCounte racked up 176 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 18 passes defended, four forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and eight interceptions, one of the most productive defensive back careers in Georgia football history.

The former five-star recruit was named 2020 Preseason All-American, but his season was derailed after only five games when he was in a motorcycle accident on Halloween night. LeCounte went on to miss the rest of the Bulldogs season, except a one-play appearance in the Peach Bowl win versus Cincinnati.

Through only five games played, LeCounte recorded 26 tackles, including a career high 13 stops in a win versus Kentucky, a tackle for a loss, fumble recovery, three interceptions and four pass breakups.

At least the SEC realized LeCounte’s prowess by recognizing him as 2020 First Team All-SEC, but PFF needs to take a step back here.

Georgia safety Richard LeCounte thanked DawgNation and declared for the 2021 NFL Draft in a tweet on Wednesday afternoon.

LeCounte missed most of Georgia’s 2020 season after suffering multiple injuries in a motorcycle accident on Halloween night, but he was still named 2020 All-SEC first team by conference coaches and will go down as one of the best safeties to ever wear the Red and Black.

In his four-year career at Georgia, LeCounte totaled 44 games played, 106 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 8 interceptions, 18 passed defended, 4 forced fumbles and 6 fumble recoveries.

From the time of his commitment in 2015, to his final play as a Georgia Bulldog in this year’s Peach Bowl win, LeCounte was a Dawg through and through.

“He (LeCounte) has been so loyal to Georgia in an era when that’s not normal. It’s normal to de-commit, move here, decide late, Georgia coach Kirby Smart told reporters in December. “He committed early, he was a great player and he stayed an extra year for his senior year.”

Georgia Bulldogs safety Richard LeCounte was injured in a traffic collision in Athens, Georgia on Saturday night. LeCounte was involved in the accident following Georgia’s 14-3 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats.

Thankfully, LeCounte is okay, which is what really matters following a scary accident. He’ll recover and he doesn’t need surgery. Looking in the immediate future, LeCounte will likely be out against the Florida Gators, but it is more important that he survived the traffic accident.

Richard LeCounte is the leader of the Georgia Bulldog defense and will be missed. He reportedly suffered bruised ribs, a concussion, and a shoulder injury in the multi-vehicle accident, per ESPN. Fortunately, he has no broken bones. LeCounte was admitted to the hospital following the accident.

LeCounte’s injury adds to Georgia’s mounting unfortunate luck. Safety Lewis Cine hurt his ankle and did not return against the Kentucky Wildcats. Cine may be able to return next week, but it is possible the UGA will be without their two top safeties against Kyle Trask and Florida.

Georgia vs Auburn: Previewing The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry

Georgia football has a big game this weekend: UGA vs Auburn. Here’s a preview of the 2020 edition of The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.

The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, Georgia versus Auburn, comes early this year with the SEC’s conference-only schedule.

And it’s a matchup of two top-10 programs – Georgia comes in ranked No. 4 after a 37-10 win versus Arkansas in Fayetteville and Auburn sits at No. 7 after a 29-13 win versus Kentucky.

The biggest question once again for the Bulldogs is who will start at quarterback?

USC transfer J.T. Daniels was cleared Monday after missing 2019 with an ACL tear, so we may finally get to see what Daniels can do under center for Georgia on Saturday.

If Daniels doesn’t get the start, we will either see junior Stetson Bennett or redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis.

Mathis started the game at Arkansas but was quickly relieved of duties just five drives. Bennett, who went 20/29 for 211 yards and two touchdowns, replaced him and led Georgia back from a 5-point deficit.

Regardless of who winds up at quarterback, Georgia will have its hands full with a loaded Auburn team.

The Tigers are led by sophomore quarterback Bo Nix, who was responsible for most of Auburn’s offense versus Kentucky.

He threw for 233 yards on 16/27 passing with 3 touchdowns and led team in rushing with five carries for 34 yards.

Nix didn’t get much help from the Tigers’ backfield, but he did establish a connection with junior receiver Seth Williams, who went off with six receptions for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns.

They will face a Georgia secondary coming off of a three interception performance versus the Razorbacks, returning one for a touchdown and adding a couple of passes defended.

Preseason All-American safety Richard LeCounte had two of those picks and looks like the unquestioned leader of the 2020 Bulldogs defense, who’s depth and talent across the board is among the best in the nation.

The Bulldogs have big junior tackle Jordan Davis in the middle of its defensive front and senior defensive end Malik Herring setting the edge with star linebackers Nolan Smith and Azeez Ojulari cleaning up. And don’t forget about senior linebacker Monte Rice at the mike linebacker spot.

With the current quarterback mess, Georgia will have to lean on these talented guys on the Bulldog defense to get a win versus a tough Auburn team, but Auburn coach Gus Malzahn always seems to have issues scoring versus Georgia coach Kirby Smart’s defenses, so look for a low scoring punt-fest this Saturday.

Pro Football Network ranks top-10 safety prospects for 2021 NFL Draft – Georgia’s Richard LeCounte too low

Pro Football Network recently ranked the top-ten safety prospects for the 2021 NFL Draft.

The site included Georgia senior Richard LeCounte, but in my opinion has the Riceboro native too low.

LeCounte checked in at No. 8 on the list.

From PFN:

“One of the most well-rounded players in the class, Richard LeCounte has arguably the highest floor of any safety in this class. Consistently productive for the Bulldogs, he projects as a quality starter in the NFL. LeCounte has decent size, decent athletic ability, and a decent skill-set all around. Unfortunately, that can be both a pro and a con, as it lowers his ceiling in the NFL. Will LeCounte ever be an impact playmaker? Potentially, but I wouldn’t bet on it. However, he can be a consistent and quality starter for a long time.”

Through three seasons, two of which saw him as a full-time starter, LeCounte has racked up 150 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, five interceptions, six pass breakups, five fumble recoveries, and four forced fumbles.

LeCounte ranked as the second best prospect in the SEC, according to PFN, behind only LSU’s JaCoby Stevens.

LeCounte has established himself as a playmaker on Georgia’s elite defense. Georgia had the top-ranked scoring defense in the nation last season. LeCounte does lose his partner in crime at the safety position, J.R. Reed, though. He’ll miss Reed, but now he’s ready to run the back-end of UGA’s defense.

The former five-star recruit has forced a combined nine turnovers over the last two seasons. LeCounte recorded the second most interceptions in the SEC last season with four. He recovered the most fumbles (three) in the league as well. It’ll be a pleasure to watch his last season between the hedges.

Georgia Bulldogs’ senior safety Richard LeCounte was an insane athlete in high school. He earned a five-star rating as a football recruit and was no slouch on the basketball court either.

In fact, LeCounte won co-player of the year for his region as junior en route to leading his Liberty County Panthers to the 2016 GHSA Class AAAA state title. In the state championship game LeCounte helped limit stud recruit M.J. Walker (who just won the ACC with Florida State) and scored twenty points.

LeCounte was a legendary high school athlete. He even jumped for the team on this tip-off despite being only 5’11”:

LeCounte’s decision to return to Georgia is huge for the Bulldog secondary. LeCounte was contemplating declaring for the NFL Draft, but opted for another season in Athens.

Before coming to Athens, Lecounte threw down monster dunks in high school. He has trained with Georgia’s basketball team, but never suited up.

LeCounte is an all-around spectacular athlete, who can do back-flips with ease. He’ll hope to be doing more back-flips after next season at Georgia.
