Bucs waive DB ahead of 2024 NFL draft

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are parting ways with one of their defensive backs as they head into the 2024 NFL draft

Just one day before the 2024 NFL draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are making a roster move.

The Bucs waived safety Richard LeCounte III, the team announced Wednesday.

A fifth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns out of Georgia in the 2021 NFL draft, LeCounte spent time with the Los Angeles Rams after leaving Cleveland, eventually landing on Tampa Bay’s practice squad last season.

After bringing back veteran safety Jordan Whitehead in free agency, it looks like the Bucs felt they could move on from LeCounte as they head into this year’s draft with a chance to add more youth to their secondary.

Rams waive DB Richard LeCounte III

After a tough outing against the Chargers, Richard LeCounte III has been waived by the Rams

The Los Angeles Rams have a ton of depth at safety after signing John Johnson III but on Monday, they thinned it out a little bit. The team announced it has waived defensive back Richard LeCounte III, opening up a roster spot.

LeCounte had a rough outing against the Chargers on Saturday night, missing three tackles and allowing two receptions, including a touchdown to Quentin Johnston.

LeCounte was already a long shot to make the 53-man roster before Johnson was signed so it’s not the biggest surprise to see the Rams waive him now as opposed to two weeks from now.

How John Johnson’s return affects the Rams’ depth chart at safety

With John Johnson returning to the Rams, it shakes up the depth chart at safety ahead of the 2023 season

The Los Angeles Rams are reuniting with John Johnson, agreeing to a one-year deal with the veteran safety. Johnson’s return alters the outlook of the secondary and it will undoubtedly affect how the depth chart shakes out ahead of Week 1.

Prior to a two-year stint with the Cleveland Browns in 2021 and 2022, Johnson was with the Rams from 2017 to 2020. Johnson quickly became a starter when he joined the Rams in 2017 and became a defensive captain rather quickly, producing 32 pass breakups and eight interceptions in his four years in Los Angeles.

Before Johnson reunited with the Rams, the starting safeties for the 2023 campaign were expected to be Jordan Fuller and either Quentin Lake or Russ Yeast. Fuller was listed as the starting strong safety, while Yeast and Fuller were battling to be the starting free safety.

Considering his previous experience with the Rams, and the fact he’s still a productive safety at only 27 years old, Johnson figures to slide in as the starting free safety this season. That means that guys like Yeast, Lake, and Jason Taylor II will be relegated to reserve or special teams roles to begin the upcoming season.

At the moment, the Rams may not have confidence in either Yeast or Lake making the leap to full-time starter yet. While Johnson’s presence will almost certainly prevent him from starting, Lake has been moving around the defense throughout training camp, even playing dime linebacker in practice.

Besides Yeast and Lake seeing their chances of starting decline, the odds of undrafted rookies Quindell Johnson and Tanner Ingle making the roster have also taken a hit. The same goes for Richard LeCounte III. The five safeties that are expected to remain on the roster are now Johnson, Fuller, Yeast, Lake, and Taylor.

It’s highly improbable that the Rams consider keeping six or more safeties on the 53-man roster, which means that Johnson, Ingle and LeCounte’s best chance to remain in Los Angeles is via the practice squad. Along with bringing experience and production to the secondary, Johnson’s return to the Rams will make it interesting when the team needs to decide their depth chart at the safety position.

Browns will eat little dead money in 2023, Austin Hooper still on the books

While the Browns are paying very little dead money this season, most of it is to one particular player

The Cleveland Browns have become quite famous for how they have manipulated the cap with void years, and in the future, they will start charging toward their salary cap. However, dead cap is also a part of the player acquisition and contract game in free agency, and unfortunately, that leads to teams paying the debt of players years after they leave the team. That is the case with the Browns and tight end Austin Hooper.

While Hooper has not been a member of the Browns since the 2021 season, the Browns are still on the hook for a chunk of dead cap from his deal. All-in-all, the Browns are in the bottom ten in dead cap owed, managing their books well. They owe just over $10 million in dead cap this season, and here is how it breaks down.

Browns Morning Roundup: Kurt Warner, Injuries galore, and more

Welcome in to this Thursday edition of Browns Morning Roundup as we recap yesterday’s happenings.

Another day, another Browns Morning Roundup as we near towards the end of the week.

As the Cleveland Browns get ready for the Baltimore Ravens, they had quite a busy day in Berea on Wednesday. Injury reports are already filed again, Hall of Fame quarterbacks are dragging this defense through the mud, and there has even been some light movement on the roster. On top of that, it covered some Browns players favored highly by analytical wings and even broke down some all-22.

Grab your coffee, grab your muffin (I have both in front of me as I write this), and let’s talk some Browns football.

Browns release Richard LeCounte III from practice squad

The Browns have released Richard LeCounte III from their practice squad.

It has been quite a roller coaster ride for 2021 NFL Draft sixth round pick Richard LeCounte III. Making the final-53 man roster, LeCounte III was later released when the Browns re-claimed offensive guard Drew Forbes off of waivers. LeCounte III then cleared waivers and was added back to the practice squad.

Today, LeCounte III has been released from the Browns’ practice squad, opening up a spot on their reserves. LeCounte has been nothing more than a special teams contributor for the Browns over the past year and a half. This team does recycle bottom-of-the-roster players and practice squad guys, however, so LeCounte’s time in Cleveland may not be completely over.

This could also mean they anticipate Dakota Allen clearing waivers after being released from the 53-man roster yesterday.

Browns announce Demetric Felton, 7 other inactives vs. Chargers

The Browns have announced eight inactives, including Demetric Felton, against the Los Angeles Chargers

As the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Chargers get set for battle, the list of inactives has dropped. As the Browns announce eight inactives, running back/wide receiver Demetric Felton is among them. After elevating Chester Rogers from the practice squad again this week to return kicks, Felton’s role has been reduced to ashes.

Rogers can be elevated one more time from the practice squad before the Browns have to sign him to the active roster to have him dress on Sundays. One has to wonder if Felton’s roster spot could be on shaky ground in a week or two.

The other inactives listed for today’s game are quarterback Kellen Mond, wide receiver Michael Woods II, safety Richard LeCounte, offensive linemen Joe Haeg and Chris Hubbard, and tight end Miller Forristall.

Browns bring S Richard LeCounte III back on practice squad

After cutting him earlier this week, the Browns are bringing safety Richard LeCounte III back on the practice squad

Earlier this week, the Cleveland Browns cut second-year safety Richard LeCounte III after claiming and bringing back offensive lineman Drew Forbes off of waivers. LeCounte III became the first draft pick of general manager Andrew Berry’s reign that he has cut.

And now after clearing waivers and going unclaimed, LeCounte III is coming back to the Browns on the practice squad. The Browns have been busy making roster moves today, as they also designated cornerback Greedy Williams for return off of the Injured Reserve.

The Browns have had a ton of movement on their practice squad over the past couple of weeks, with LeCounte III being just the latest move.

Browns bring back OL Drew Forbes, waive S Richard LeCounte III

Andrew Berry has finally cut one of his own draft picks as the Browns have waived Richard LeCounte III to bring back Drew Forbes.

He finally did it. For the first time general manager Andrew Berry has cut one of his own draft picks. The Cleveland Browns are bringing back offensive lineman Drew Forbes via a waiver claim, waiving second-year safety Richard LeCounte III to make room.

LeCounte III was in the doghouse last season with the Browns, and has not seen the field much at all in a little over a year with the team. With the emergence of undrafted free agent rookie D’Anthony Bell, LeCounte III remained the odd man out in the secondary. Bell out-snapped LeCounte III on special teams against the Atlanta Falcons, and that was likely the difference.

The bottom of the roster continues to churn for the Browns.

Cleveland Browns name 7 inactives for game vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Ahead of their matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cleveland Browns have announced seven inactives

As the Cleveland Browns get ready to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, they have named seven inactives who will not suit up. Some injuries, some players who are buried on the depth chart, and one surprise who has played during the first two weeks of the season.

The Browns are certainly in need of a bounce back performance after blowing a two-score lead with under two minutes left on Sunday against the New York Jets. Regardless of that, they have a chance to leave FirstEnergy Stadium with a record of 2-1 by the time the clock strikes zero.

Here are your inactives:
