Studs and duds from Eagles 48-10 loss to the Dolphins in preseason finale

Studs and duds from the Philadelphia Eagles’ 48-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins in the preseason finale

On a night when the Eagles sat their starters, including quarterback Jalen Hurts and receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, it’s hard to find any studs following a 48-10 loss to the Dolphins in Miami.

Facing Philadelphia’s second-team defense and reserves, Tua Tagovailoa connected with Tyreek Hill for 51 yards on the first play from scrimmage.

Miami set a franchise record for points in a preseason game with the ugly beatdown.

Tagovailoa played the entire first quarter, finishing 6 of 7 for 121 yards and a touchdown in three series.

Gardner Minshew got the start for the Eagles, going 6 of 9 for 48 yards in two drives.

With Philadelphia now preparing to trim the roster down to 53 players by Tuesday, here are the studs and duds from Saturday night.

15 Eagles who need a strong performance against the Dolphins in preseason finale

Looking at 15 Philadelphia Eagles who need a strong performance against the Miami Dolphins

After two days of intense practice, the Philadelphia Eagles picked up their first preseason win over the Cleveland Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium last Sunday.

Philadelphia then traveled to Miami for a joint practice with the Dolphins before finishing working alone on the final day after the host team dealt with a stomach bug.

Saturday night marks the final audition for several players on the bubble.

With the roster needing to be trimmed to 53 players by Tuesday, here are 15 players who need strong performances against Miami at Hard Rock Stadium.

Nick Sirianni is unsure if Eagles will carry 2 or 3 QBs on 53-man roster

With Philadelphia in Miami to wrap up the preseason against the Dolphins, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni says he’s unsure if the team will carry two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster

The Eagles currently have one of the NFL’s top rosters, and with such overall talent comes some tough roster decisions on cutdown day.

Philadelphia will need to trim the roster down to 53 players by Tuesday, August 30.  With several key positions on the depth chart likely to be evaluated tightly, the quarterback position could take the biggest hit.

The Eagles like to keep a developmental quarterback, but on Wednesday, head coach Nick Sirianni was unsure when media members in Miami asked his preference.

“It just all depends. It all depends on your roster situation in general. Sometimes it doesn’t even come down to who the quarterbacks are. It comes down to some of the roster things. I’ve had two at times and I’ve had three at times. I’d say more probably so on the two side than the three side, to be quite honest with you. But that just depends on a lot of different things.”

“I think [QB] Gardner [Minshew] had a really nice day yesterday as well. And I think [QB] Reid [Sinnett] has had a good camp throughout. So, I’m happy with the situation that we have right now.”

Philadelphia could choose to carry more than three running backs, the wide receiver position could see five or six players carried along with the big four at the position.

The Eagles could also carry extra offensive and defensive linemen, while the linebacker and cornerback depth charts are stacked and could require extra players.

With a 16-man practice squad available, Philadelphia will have roster flexibility weekly.

Still, the Eagles should carry two signal-callers into Detroit if the team believes Sinnett is the future No. 2 quarterback, post-Gardner Minshew.

Eagles roster bubble: Which players helped or hurt their cause in Week 2 against the Cleveland Browns

The Eagles defeated the Browns, 21-20, in their second preseason game at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday, and it was a showcase for veterans and rookies on the roster bubble.

With Philadelphia’s starters and critical reserves resting, the second team offensive line highlighted the team’s depth at the position, with the Eagles still almost rushing for 150+ yards.

Philadelphia will need to trim the roster down to 80 players by Tuesday afternoon, and with joint practices with the Dolphins looming, we’re looking at which players helped or hurt their roster cause.

Studs and duds from Philadelphia Eagles 21-20 preseason win over Cleveland Browns

The Eagles and Browns wrapped up two days of intense joint practices with good football by both teams’ second units in a barnburner on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium.

With Hurts resting, Gardner Minshew showed why he’s the top backup in the NFL, playing the entire first half as he completed 14-of-17 passes for 142 yards with a 101.5 quarterback rating.

Philadelphia wasn’t as efficient on the defensive side of the ball, with the second team unit giving up almost 150-yards rushing to the Browns’ backups.

With the Eagles heading to Miami for two days of joint practices, here are the studs and duds from Sunday’s win.

Takeaways and observations from the Philadelphia Eagles’ 21-20 preseason win over Cleveland Browns

The Eagles wrapped up two days of joint practices in Ohio Sunday with a 21-20 win over the Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland.

With Jalen Hurts, Deshaun Watson, and Jacoby Brissett watching from the sidelines, Philadelphia’s backup quarterback Gardner Minshew and Browns third-string quarterback Josh Dobbs provided us with the first half of exciting and efficient quarterback play.

Both offenses were effective, while the Eagles’ second-team defense was gashed by a Browns’ rushing attack that found success on the edge and with cutback lanes in both halves of football.

Dobbs finished 14 of 20 for 141 yards before Josh Rosen replaced him in the third quarter for the Browns, while Minshew had similar numbers, going 14 of 17 passing for 142 yards before Reid Sinnett took over in the third quarter.

With the Eagles headed to Miami for two days of joint practice, here are takeaways and observations from Sunday’s win.

Watch: Eagles QB Reid Sinnett connects with WR Devon Allen for a 55-yard TD pass vs. Browns

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Reid Sinnett showed off his arm on this 55-yard bomb to wide receiver Devon Allen in the third quarter against the Cleveland Browns

Devon Allen entered Sunday’s preseason matchup against the Browns needing to make a huge impact, and the Olympic hurdler did just that late in the third quarter.

Allen was the recipient of a 55-yard bomb from quarterback Reid Sinnett that resulted in a touchdown to even things up 20-20 with 3:42 remaining in the quarter.

Allen was a speedster at Oregon before transitioning to track & field full time, and he’s looking to find a spot on the Eagles roster.

Five position battles to watch during the Philadelphia Eagles’ joint practice sessions with the Cleveland Browns

After 12 days of intense group practice, the Eagles will face opposition from the AFC over the next two weeks with joint practices against the Browns and Dolphins.

Philadelphia arrived in Berea, Ohio, on Wednesday night, and they’ll kick off day one of the joint sessions during the peak hours for heat, as Cleveland prefers to practice later in the afternoon.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is big on using joint practice sessions to gauge his team’s competitive spirit and ability to be precise with schemes, formations, and overall game management. As far as Sirianni goes, the next two weeks of practice are Philadelphia’s preseason games, and the roster separation will begin on Thursday afternoon.

With the roster needing to be trimmed down to 80 by Tuesday, here are five position battles to watch.

What the Philadelphia Eagles will look for in their quarterbacks during the joint practices with the Cleveland Browns

The Eagles and Browns are less than six hours away from their first joint practice, and there will be several storylines and players to watch.

One position group to watch will at quarterback, where Jalen Hurts comes face to face with a disciplined, efficient, and complex defensive unit to crack in Cleveland.  The Browns could be without Myles Garrett, but there’s still plenty of star power on Joe Wood’s defense.

Here is what the Eagles will look for at the quarterback position during joint practices.
