2024 NFL Free agency: Eagles history with the franchise tag

With 22 pending free agents and several key players looking for big money, we’re taking a look at the Philadelphia Eagles’ history with the NFL franchise tag

When the Chiefs Super Bowl parade was completed, the NFL world started to focus on 2024 entirely and the critical offseason that awaits.

As teams around the league prepare for the NFL scouting combine, the franchise tag window opens on Tuesday and closes on March 5.

Any unrestricted free agent not tagged in that period will be able to sign with any suitor when the new league year and free agency opens on March 13. (The negotiating period, when teams can reach out to agents of potential free agents to start talks, begins March 11.)

Lamar Jackson was among six players tagged last year, with two, including defensive tackle Daron Payne (Giants) and tight end Evan Engram (Jaguars) signing long-term extensions.

The 2024 salary cap hasn’t been set yet, but it’s expected to land north of $240 million, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

The Eagles have to make critical decisions on several of their free agents, but none are worth franchise tagging.

They can bring back Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham at a significantly cheaper rate, and the Eagles don’t like to pay running backs, so tagging D’Andre Swift is out.

With the new league year fast approaching, we’re looking at the Eagles’ history with the franchise tag.

Steelers LB T.J. Watt joins Reggie White with incredible stat

T.J. Watt joined NFL immortality on Sunday.

It didn’t take long for Pittsburgh Steelers edge T.J. Watt to join NFL immortality. On the Cincinnati Bengals first drive, Watt sacked Cincinnati quarterback Jake Browning for his 90th career sack.

This puts Watt with NFL legend Reggie White as the only two players in NFL history to get 90 or more sacks in their first 100 games. On Sunday Watt is playing in his 97th career game.

Former Wisconsin Badger T.J. Watt is up to his usual tricks today against the Green Bay Packers. The perennial NFL All-Pro has five tackles, one tackle-for-loss, one sack and two quarterback hits…at halftime.

His sack today was No. 88 in his career, that tally coming only 100 games into his NFL career. With the sack, he passed his brother J.J. Watt, who had 87.5 sacks in his first 100 games.

The leaderboard now reads:

Broncos vs. Packers series history: Denver aims to take all-time lead

The all-time series between the Broncos and Packers is tied 7-7-1. Who will pull ahead on Sunday?

The 1-5 Denver Broncos are set to take on the 2-3 Green Bay Packers at Empower Field at Mile High in Week 7.

The Broncos and Packers series goes back to 1971, when the Packers won the first meeting 34-13. Since then, the teams have played 14 additional times. The most meaningful and memorable matchup for the Broncos was in Super Bowl XXXII.

That year, Denver came in as 11-point underdogs to the reigning Super Bowl champs. Super Bowl XXXII featured eight future Pro Football Hall of Famers (John Elway, Brett Favre, Steve Atwater, Gary Zimmerman, Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, Reggie White and Ron Wolf).

The highlight of the game was Elway’s famous “Helicopter” play, where he dove for a first down and was hit by multiple Packers defenders in midair. Denver came away with their first-ever championship, 31-24. Interestingly enough, the Broncos also beat Green Bay en route to their second and third championships, 31-10 and 29-10 victories, respectively, in 1998 and 2015.

The last time these two squads met was in 2019. The Broncos went into the game with quarterback Joe Flacco, and Green Bay by Aaron Rodgers. The Packers were the better team in a game where the running backs dominated. Aaron Jones rushed for two touchdowns for the Packers, while former Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay also ran for two touchdowns.

The all-time series between Denver and Green Bay is tied 7-7-1. The Broncos will aim to pull ahead on Sunday.

Denver looks to right a sinking ship of a declining defense and an inconsistent offense in this game against a perennially NFC North powerhouse.

Who has terrified quarterbacks and coaches the most for every team?

The modern NFL game is not built for defenses to thrive. Heck, even in times of “three yards and a cloud of dust,” it’s arguable the league never actually wanted defenses to win. At least, once the powers that be learned that offense sells like hotcakes.

Suffice it to say, playing defense in the NFL can be an impossible job. So the men that have courageously taken on the assignment of slowing down high-flying attacks stand out all the more.

In pro football lore, the best defenders ever are those who made offensive coordinators lose countless hours of sleep as they game-planned. They are the players who made quarterbacks quite literally see ghosts when standing in the pocket. They are pictures of reliability and dependability and are the preeminent warriors of the West’s favorite gladiator sport.

The below list examines the greatest defender in the history of all 32 NFL teams. My criteria was simple and rooted around these questions: What was their production like? Did they have a high intimidation factor? How available were they for their teammates? Did they pioneer a new way of playing their position?

It’s not easy playing defense in the NFL. But these fine gentlemen sometimes made the impossible seem like a casual task.

ESPN Films Announces 30 for 30 Documentary “The Minister of Defense” on the late, great NFL Hall of Famer Reggie White

Reggie White is a legendary figure, and the main reason Javon Hargrave landed an $84 million contract from the San Francisco 49ers.

A unanimous All-American at Tennessee, White spent two seasons playing for the Memphis Showboats of the United States Football League (USFL) before he was selected in the first round of the 1984 Supplemental Draft.

A key cog on Buddy Ryan’s famous Eagles defenses, White played 15 NFL seasons for Philadelphia, Green Bay, and Carolina, becoming one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history.

White passed away on December 26, 2004, at 43.

Now, ESPN Films is set to unveil a 30 for 30 documentary titled “The Minister of Defense.”

ESPN Films today announced that it is in production on a 30 for 30 documentary, “The Minister of Defense,” that examines the complex and sometimes controversial life of Reggie White, one of the greatest and most faith-driven players in NFL history. Told in part through never-before-seen footage from a 2004 interview filmed two months before his death, the film chronicles both White’s incredible dominance as one of the best defensive players ever and his spiritual journey as an ordained evangelical minister who questioned his blind faith toward the end of his life. Along with interviews with teammates from both the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers, the film features Reggie’s son Jeremy who embarks on a journey to understand his father’s life, which ended tragically short at the age of 43. “The Minister of Defense” is a portrait of a man who constantly strived to “do right” but found that sometimes there is no easy answer as to what “right” means.

The documentary will be directed by Ken Rodgers (“Bullies of Baltimore,” “The Tuck Rule,” “The Two Bills”) and Courtland Bragg (“Hard Knocks: Training Camp,” “Hard Knocks: In-Season,” “All or Nothing”)

White was a Two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Super Bowl XXXI champion, 13-time Pro Bowl, and 13-time All-Pro selection, and is second place all-time among NFL career sack leaders with 198 (behind Bruce Smith’s 200 career sacks). He was selected to the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team, NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team, NFL 1990s All-Decade Team, and the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team.

Any unrestricted free agent not tagged in that period will be able to sign with any suitor when the new league year and free agency opens on March 15. (The negotiating period, when teams can reach out to agents of potential free agents to start talks, begins March 13.)

Eight players were tagged last year, with four including receiver Davante Adams, signing long-term extensions.

Adams was traded from the Packers to the Raiders.

Bengals safety Jessie Bates III, Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz, Chiefs offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. and Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki all played the 2022 season on the tag.

With the salary cap soaring to $224.8 million in 2023, teams will have plenty of money, but Philadelphia will have key decisions to make on a handful of critical contributors.
