Oklahoma projected to land Indiana Hoosiers edge Dasan McCullough via the transfer portal

With the transfer portal officially open, the Oklahoma Sooners look to be the favorites to land Indiana Hoosiers transfer EDGE Dasan McCullough. From @john9williams

On the same day the Oklahoma Sooners received crystal ball projections flipping 2023 four-star safety Daeh McCullough from Cincinnati to Oklahoma, it looks like another McCullough may be joining the Sooners in 2023.

OUInsiders Brandon Drumm and Parker Thune issued crystal ball predictions for Indiana edge rusher [autotag]Dasan McCullough[/autotag] to land with the Oklahoma Sooners through the transfer portal.

Dasan and [autotag]Daeh McCullough[/autotag] are the sons of Notre Dame running backs coach Deland McCullough, who played alongside Sooners cornerbacks coach Jay Valai with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dasan McCullough was a four-star edge in the 2022 recruiting class, ranking No. 75 in the nation in the 247Sports composite. He was the No. 9 edge in the class and the No. 2 player in the state of Indiana.

As a true freshman season, Dasan played in all 12 games for the Hoosiers and racked up 49 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and four sacks, which tied for the team lead. He was second among edge rushers in defensive snaps according to Pro Football Focus and finished third on the team with 19 total pressures. At 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, McCullough would bring great size and athleticism to the defensive end room.

With pressure being an issue for the Sooners in 2022, adding a player that was able to make an immediate impact for the Hoosiers pass rush in his first season would be huge for the Oklahoma Sooners.

He’s a versatile, uber-athletic player. When John Garcia (Sports Illustrateds director of national recruiting) came on to talk about him, he called him a “monster back” which is a phrase I love. In high school, he played safety but I’m not sure he can do that in college. He split time between LB and as an edge rusher this year, mainly the latter. He played a LOT as a true freshman which is both an indictment on how bad IU is and how good he is. I’d say an edge rusher is probably his best fit long-term, but he’s athletic enough that I could see him playing more LB down the road and definitely in passing situations. He can get into the backfield and disrupt plays and pressure the QB. Really a special talent that is going to make an impact right away anywhere. – Rude, Locked On Hoosiers

After a disappointing season, the Oklahoma Sooners need to significantly improve their pass rush. [autotag]R Mason Thomas[/autotag] flashed some and was one of the bright spots from the 2022 recruiting class, but Oklahoma could use some help generating pressure off the edge. If it can land Dasan McCullough, that would go a long way toward helping the pass rush in 2023 and beyond.

Report Card: Front seven failures, turnovers doom Oklahoma vs. Baylor

Saturday’s effort for the Oklahoma Sooners followed an almost identical script to the game they played against the Kansas State Wildcats. An inability to stop the run, untimely errors on offense, and a chance late to flip the script. However, a crucial fourth-quarter fourth-down stop was too much to ask for. That same scenario played out in the Sooners 38-35 loss to Baylor.

Things weren’t all bad as a collective, but it wasn’t good enough, and that has become an all too familiar feeling after Oklahoma Sooners games this season.

The Oklahoma Sooners get set to take on the Baylor Bears on Saturday in a matchup between 5-3 teams that were two of the favorites to make the Big 12 title game. Though both still have a mathematical chance to make it, Baylor’s road to Arlington is much more clear.

The Sooners hold a 28-4 edge over the Baylor Bears all-time. However, since 2011, the series has been much closer. Oklahoma is just 8-4 vs. the Bears over the last 12 matchups, including the 2019 Big 12 title game.

From 2011 to 2014, the Bears went 3-1 against the Sooners, and Oklahoma responded by winning seven straight until Baylor ended Oklahoma’s perfect 2021 with a 27-14 win in Waco.

Oklahoma enters Saturday’s contest with a chance for revenge. Oklahoma lost to just two teams last year, Baylor and Oklahoma State. Both losses came on the road, which means both will be home games for Oklahoma this season.

Their mini revenge tour starts Saturday as they take on the Baylor Bears at home. Bears’ head coach Dave Aranda has had success against Oklahoma and members of this coaching staff before. Aranda’s 2019 LSU defense suffocated the Sooners in the College Football Playoff before going on to defeat Clemson in the National Championship game. At Baylor, his teams have played Oklahoma incredibly hard.

While Aranda has his handprints all over the defense, Oklahoma must figure out how to stop the Baylor offense that ranks 27th nationally in yards per game at 456.2 and just ahead of the Sooners in yards per play at 6.13 compared to 6.10.

Oklahoma has Billy Bowman back and looks to have Damond Harmon back as well. With a defense that is getting healthy, here are five players that will be key to a win on Saturday vs. Baylor.

5 Oklahoma Sooners to watch on defense against Iowa State

These five players need to have a big day for the Oklahoma Sooners defense against Iowa State.

Oklahoma resumes conference play on Saturday as they load up and head to Ames, Iowa to take on Matt Campbell’s Iowa State Cyclones. Oklahoma comes off their bye week rejuvenated and largely very healthy, with the only notable injury being that of impact defender Billy Bowman. Oklahoma’s defense has been playing without Bowman for weeks now, so they should be acclimated to life without their best defensive back.

With Bowman out of the lineup, new guys have been given opportunities to showcase themselves. While no one player has stood out, the coaching staff likes the open competition and is giving different players looks. The rest of the defense will also have to take their games to the next level, as the last road trip for Oklahoma ended with TCU scoring over 50 points on the Sooners.

Iowa State no longer has running back Breece Hall, who went head-to-head the last few seasons with the Texas Longhorns’ Bijan Robinson for best RB in the Big 12. They did return Xavier Hutchinson, and he’s taken his game to the next level. He’s the toughest skill player Oklahoma will be scheming to stop.

The Iowa State offense is anemic in comparison to the other Big 12 offenses Oklahoma has seen to this point. However, the Cyclones will get up for Oklahoma. As we get ready for kickoff, here are five defenders to watch for as Oklahoma takes on Iowa State.

Coming out of the bye week, the Oklahoma Sooners look to keep the good times rolling with a road trip to Ames to take on the Iowa State Cyclones.

Iowa State is 3-4 and 0-4 in the Big 12, but their four straight losses have come by an average margin of 3.5 points per game. The Cyclones haven’t lost a game by more than a touchdown this season and will provide the Sooners with yet another test in a season that’s gone much differently than expected.

Oklahoma is getting ready to take on a team that’s beaten the Sooners twice since 2017 and handed Oklahoma a loss the last time they made the trip up north. The Sooners hold a 78-7-2 edge in the historical matchup that dates back to 1928. But the Cyclones have caused problems for their Big 8 rival in recent years.

Tasked with leading Oklahoma into Ames are Andrew Raym, Reggie Grimes, Anton Harrison, Marvin Mims, and Danny Stutsman, who were named captains for this week’s matchup.

Taking a look back at the 2020 recruiting cycle, where did ESPN rank the Oklahoma Sooners 2020 recruiting class?

The 2022 class has had a few splashes here and there, but we probably won’t have a good grasp on the impact of this group until 2024. A few years since the arrival of the 2020 recruiting class, what kind of impact is this group having for the Oklahoma Sooners?

In their third season in Norman, the 2020 recruiting class is playing a huge role for the Sooners this year. Marvin Mims is one of the best receivers in the country and Anton Harrison is playing like a player that could be taken in the top 50 of the 2023 NFL draft. Andrew Raym has developed into a solid starter at center helping anchor a fast-paced Oklahoma offensive attack.

In ESPN’s look at the 2020 recruiting class, the Sooners improved from the No. 10 class at the time to No. 7 in their re-rank.

How this class finishes under new head coach Brent Venables remains to be seen as the Sooners navigate a rough patch. Several signees are no longer with the program. Under previous head coach Lincoln Riley, with whom they signed, this group has offered some really good production. Pieces of this class helped generate more than 20 wins, a conference title their freshmen season and a pair of bowl wins. WR Marvin Mims was a key target on that Big 12 title team and remains a top receiver for the Sooners. DL Perrion Winfrey was the top junior college DL and was a disruptive starter while with the program. Top signee Reggie Grimes has developed into a good defender, leading the team in sacks. The addition of Perrion Winfrey from the junior college ranks was the highlight on the defensive side. Though a bit up and down for the Sooners, Winfrey provided an interior pass rush and was taken in the

Reggie Grimes has been a good player, but hasn’t been the best player in the recruiting class. There’s still another level that he can go to.

Aaryn Parks and Nate Anderson have provided depth along the offensive line and Justin Harrington has become a rotational Cheetah player for the OU defense. D.J. Graham had some good moments at cornerback, but recently made the switch to wide receiver.

Chandler Morris won the starting quarterback job at TCU before suffering an injury in the season opener. Max Duggan’s played so well that Morris hasn’t been able to reclaim the starting quarterback job.

The biggest disappointments in this class were Seth McGowan and Mikey Henderson. Both players had promising starts to their Sooners careers in 2020 before being dismissed during the 2021 offseason amid assault allegations.

If we were re-ranking the players in the 2020 class, Marvin Mims or Anton Harrison would vie for the top player. Both have been among the best at their position in the Big 12 and have received some first round buzz in early mock drafts for the 2023 NFL draft.
