Chiefs S Justin Reid joins in DeAndre Hopkins recruitment effort

Another former teammate of WR DeAndre Hopkins has joined in the effort to recruit him to the #Chiefs.

Charles Omenihu isn’t the only former teammate of DeAndre Hopkins who is trying to recruit him to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Chiefs S Justin Reid joined in Omenihu’s efforts on Friday afternoon, sending off a tweet directed at the 3-time First-Team All-Pro. Reid and Hopkins spent two seasons playing together with the Houston Texans in 2018 and 2019, which also happens to be two of the best seasons of both players’ respective careers.

“Come win a ring in KC bro,” Reid wrote, tagging Hopkins’ account on Twitter.

If anyone knows how successful Hopkins could be in Kansas City, it’s Reid. It was a true iron-sharpens-iron situation between the two competitors on the practice field. They made each other better in Houston and could do the same with K.C. in 2023. They even matched up against each other when the Texans played against the Cardinals in 2021 (see our featured image at the top of the page).

We know that the Chiefs had a previous interest in Hopkins and it’s clear that his former teammates think highly of him. Really, there is just one thing left for Brett Veach and the front office to do.

Chiefs DE Charles Omenihu already recruiting DeAndre Hopkins

#Chiefs DE Charles Omenihu is already making a recruiting pitch to former #Cardinals WR DeAndre Hopkins.

Not even a full 20 minutes after the Arizona Cardinals announced the release of WR DeAndre Hopkins, one of his former teammates has recommenced a recruitment campaign to bring him to Kansas City.

Charles Omenihu and Hopkins spent a full season playing together with the Houston Texans in 2019. The new Chiefs D-Lineman already attempted to recruit him after trade rumors began to pick up back in March. These new recruitment efforts are different, given that Hopkins is set to become a free agent when the release becomes official at 4:00 p.m. ET on Friday.

“You free now come on to the kingdom,” Omenihu wrote, tagging Hopkins’ Twitter account.

One thing that is notable about these recruitment efforts is that Hopkins has been his own agent for a while, negotiating each of his past two contracts. Back in March in an appearance on The Pat McAfee show, Hopkins confirmed that he’d hired his lawyer to represent him, but it’s reasonable to assume he’ll still play a large role in negotiating any deal with a new team. If Omenihu, Patrick Mahomes, or any other Chiefs players wanted to reach out to Hopkins and make a true recruiting pitch, it could easily be a difference-maker in swaying him to Kansas City.

Chiefs DT Chris Jones recruiting DE Frank Clark, DT Mike Pennel back to Kansas City

Chris Jones took to Twitter to recruit a pair of former teammates back to the #Chiefs. | from @EdEastonJr

The NFL offseason has already seen plenty of movement in free agency, with old faces moving to new places. The Kansas City Chiefs have added more players while parting ways with key players from last season’s Super Bowl LVII-winning team.

One of the biggest names let go by the Chiefs to start the offseason was veteran defensive lineman Frank Clark, who was a mainstay defensively for the Chiefs over the last four seasons. He often played his best football during the postseason and had a penchant for stepping up in the most critical moments. Injuries and off-the-field issues had become a distraction in the latter part of his Chiefs’ tenure, making him and his cap hit expandable in the front office’s eyes.

Clark’s former teammate Chris Jones appears to be pushing for a reunion, appealing to Clark in his latest tweets. The All-Pro defensive tackle tagged Clark directly to recruit him for next season.

Clark wasn’t the only target on Jones’ mind, as he tweeted a similar message for veteran DT Mike Pennel. The 33-year-old spent last season with the Chicago Bears but was teammates with Jones on the Chiefs in 2019 and 2020. Pennel played in all 17 games for the Bears, where he tallied 26 total tackles and a forced fumble.

The Chiefs haven’t formally acknowledged any efforts to recruit either Clark or Pennel, but anything is possible. The team never closed the door on a reunion with Clark when they released him earlier in the offseason. Carlos Dunlap was a late signing last year as training camp was underway, so adding a trusted veteran at some point before the season can never be ruled out.

Signing Day Sports’ customizable recruitment platform aims to promote athlete exposure

With advanced video, metric and filtration features, Signing Day Sports hopes to help increase athletes’ exposure to college coaches.

It’s not impossible for athletes from smaller cities to get recruiting attention. Heck, Zion Williamson was the most famous high school athlete in the country while playing in a city with a population of about 35,000 people.

It’s not impossible. But even if you’re good enough, it’s often tough to make the right people notice.

Former Minnesota Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway got his break because a guy who knew a guy happened to be at the South Dakota nine-man football high school championship game the year Greenway’s Mount Vernon High School won the title. John LaFleur, who had kids who played at Iowa, reached out to Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz and said his team needed to see Greenway. It was the future first-round pick’s only Division I offer.

The rest is history for Greenway, who went on to become an All-American at Iowa and a two-time Pro Bowler in the NFL. But one of his first impressions when he joined the Hawkeyes: There were other athletes he played with in high school who could have competed in Division I football but didn’t get the chance.

“What blew me away was, man, all those guys fell through the cracks because they didn’t have the game I had when that guy was watching,” Greenway said.

With the advent of YouTube and social media, it’s become easier for high-level athletes to get attention since Greenway graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 2001. But the biggest challenges persist: the recruiting trips, validating the data athletes send, parsing through videos to find what is true, repeatable talent against reels that are essentially highlight clips. Finding the diamonds in the rough is difficult, especially for sports without comprehensive databases like 247Sports.

Recruitment platform Signing Day Sports, which launched in late 2020 and partnered with Greenway, aims to make it easier for athletes to get on coaches’ radars and give recruiters a more efficient way to parse through athlete information. The program hopes to stand apart from other platforms and video services by offering a wider range of advanced video, metric and filtration features.

One of the most interesting components is the ability for coaches to filter information based on specific needs. If a football team is looking for a speedy lineman, the recruiter can combine height and speed metrics. A baseball recruiter who wants a pitcher with a good fastball-slider combo can filter by velocity, cut and other metrics.

“Think like Zillow. If you’re out looking for a house, and you’re putting in your parameters – exactly the number of bedrooms, location, what zip code, square footage, price range, all of that — the college coach recruiter/player personnel coordinator, they’re doing the exact same thing,” said Signing Day Sports CEO John Dorsey. “They know (the) exact physical characteristic of the individual that’s going to fit in.”

Along with that is the side-by-side video feature. A coach can compare multiple players running drills or compare a player’s form against him or herself in different scenarios. Videos can be played simultaneously, overlaid and run slow-mo.

The data validation of the site ensures metrics are accurate and kept up to date. An athlete who hit a growth spurt doesn’t need to wait for the next camp for recruiters to see the difference in height, speed and strength when the Signing Day Sports account page can be updated and validated.

With a hub for videos and a way for coaches to filter more easily, players are able to get onto the radar of coaches easier without necessarily having to attend an expensive camp, transfer schools or get spotted by the right person.

“It’s an industry that’s flawed — to be nice about it – (and) needs to be disrupted,” Dorsey said. “There’s not a current cohesive system out there that every kid has equal opportunity to be seen. That’s what the purpose of our platform is.”

The site currently offers football, baseball and softball service with other sports in development to come. As of April 11, more than 125,000 athletes have profiles and more than 1,000 high school and club coaches and 600 college/university programs at Div. I, II, III, NAIA and JuCo schools are on the platform.

The basic plan for individual athletes is free but is more limited in allowances than the paid packages, which range from about $20-$30 per month. The program is working with clubs and high school associations in states such as Texas, Minnesota and North Carolina in an attempt to alter the pricing model in the future.

The recruitment industry was forced to change massively during the height of the coronavirus when much more of the process turned virtual. While this created a litany of challenges, the door was open to innovation against the norms: How much data and insight can be gleaned without recruiting trips? How much money can be saved by moving initial interviews and more information validation to the beginning of the process instead of booking an entire trip?

It’s a mammoth task in football, but even more so for the dozens of sports that must accomplish the same on a smaller budget. Many of those sports will be part of the platform down the road.

“You’ve made a college soccer coach’s job so much cheaper, so much easier on a small budget to actually go identify and find these kids,” Greenway said. “It’s not that they don’t want to seek out and find kids – it’s they can’t afford to do it, and I think that just comes down to what you actually have for recruiting budget, how much time and energy you put into it.”

For Signing Day Sports to maximize its potential, coaches must believe that there are enough athletes on the platform who would otherwise escape their notice to be worth signing up. Athletes must believe that it’s a more effective alternative to get on the radar than traditional methods. It also must accommodate the growing NIL sphere, an area that has not yet been integrated into the platform due to the questions and uncertainty around its guidelines that differ state by state.

As Signing Day Sports continues to grow, it can increase exposure to athletes in a way that can help a kid who can’t afford a camp or an athlete like Greenway won’t have to know a guy who knows a guy to be able to reach the next step.

Michigan State locks in official visit with 4-star football and basketball recruit Trejuan Holloman

Trejuan Holloman will be on campus this weekend to meet with Mel Tucker and Tom Izzo about joining Michigan State.

Mel Tucker and Tom Izzo have already shown that they are willing to work together to recruit some of the more high-profile dual sport athletes around the country and to give those players the opportunity to play in two highly respected programs. Thus far, Maliq Carr and Keon Coleman have joined both teams, one via recruitment and one via the transfer portal.

This weekend, the Spartans will try to land a third dual sport athlete in Trejuan Holloman. Holloman is a 4-star point guard and cornerback out of Saint Paul, Minnesota. He is the No. 7 ranked point guard in the 2022 class and the No. 1 ranked player in Minnesota that year.

Mayor of New Orleans gets in on the recruitment of Russell Wilson to the Saints

Mayor LaToya Cantrell posted a video telling Russell Wilson and Ciara they’d be welcomed to New Orleans.

Russell Wilson is reportedly unhappy with the Seattle Seahawks, and that has been enough to send the NFL offseason right into full hysteria mode. It’s hard to think of too many fanbases that wouldn’t be interested in adding Wilson to their roster, and we’ve already gone through a number of teams that could be interesting fits.

One of those teams is the New Orleans Saints. Is there any chance that Wilson could actually land there? Sure. Anything is possible. So it’s unsurprising that Saints fans are actively trying to recruit Wilson to come to NOLA.

What is a little bit surprising is that the city’s actual mayor is now getting involved in this.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell posted a video to her social media on Saturday (in a happy coincidence, the Twitter post came at 5:04 p.m. ET). In it, Cantrell said that while she couldn’t know if the rumors are true, she wanted both Wilson and his partner Ciara to know they would be welcome in New Orleans.

I love forward to a city councilman from Las Vegas or the Governor of Illinois to get in on the fun soon.

Notre Dame: April’s Top Ten Stories on FIW

April has come and gone. Which Notre Dame stories were the biggest the last month? Count down the top ten right here.

And just like that April has come and come.  Amazing how fast (or slow) a month goes by when you’re stuck inside the confides of your home unless you’ve got an essential job you have to punch into still.

What all happened during the month of April at Fighting Irish Wire?  Well it was an interesting month that saw the retirement of a legendary coach at Notre Dame, six players get drafted in the NFL Draft and a 2021 football recruit give a verbal to Notre Dame.

If you missed anything this month or are just curious to look back, here are your ten most popular stories from Fighting Irish Wire during the month of April.

10.  Niele Ivey wasn’t even on the job a week when she saw two prime-time recruits commit to the Notre Dame Women’s basketball program.

9.  Deion Colzie, prized wide reciever in the 2021 recruiting class de-commited from Notre Dame in March.  Could he still re-commit though?

8.  Brian Kelly gave an early-April update on the latest on Notre Dame/Navy in Ireland, something we’re still left wondering about as we say goodbye to the month.

7.  Christian McCaffrey never played for Notre Dame but the Fighting Irish coaching staff continues to promote the highest paid running back in the NFL as one of their own.

6.  We found out more information on Will Shipley’s recruitment in the early parts of the month.  We’re still without any absolutes but Notre Dame clearly has a spot at the table with Clemson and North Carolina.

5.  We don’t have an answer yet on if Notre Dame and Navy will play in Ireland but a recent mandate by Ireland’s government has me scratching my head trying to figure out how this game gets played overseas.

4.  Notre Dame quarterback commit Tyler Buchner, the prized jewel so far of the 2021 cycle, received a fifth star by 247Sports.

3.  Brian Kelly had strong words he offered up for Kirk Herbstreit’s prediction that college football wouldn’t be played in 2020. That was this month?  Seriously it feels like eight weeks ago at least.

2.  The latest news of Notre Dame being a finalist to land former Stanford running back Trevor Speights got a lot of attention the last few days.  Stay tuned as we could get an announcement there before much longer.

April’s Most Viewed Story:  Notre Dame made a scholarship offer to one of the nation’s top defensive recruits in the 2022 class, Denver Harris as they’re trying to hit one out of the park with the prized defensive back.

Thank you everyone for making April great and can’t wait for an even better May.  Hopefully we’ll all be able to get back to a little more normalcy this month compared to in the last but I hope you’re saying safe, sane and healthy.

Former UGA WR Tyler Simmons has strong opinion on Mark Dantonio abruptly leaving Michigan State

Former Georgia football WR Tyler Simmons has a strong opinion on Mark Dantonio leaving Michigan State abruptly.

On Tuesday, Mark Dantonio abruptly announced his retirement after 13 seasons as head coach at Michigan State.

The timing of his announcement, which came as a complete shock for everyone, could not have been worse for the program. Just one day before signing day and your head coach of over a decade steps down?

For recruits, the Spartans received 19 national letters of intent during the early signing period, with seven players enrolling early. These are all players who, despite placing their trust in Dantonio, will never play a down of football for the man they signed up for.

One of those recruits is Jordon Simmons, a 3-star running back out of McEachern High School in Powder Springs, who fortunately has not actually signed his name to paper yet.

Simmons is the younger brother of former Georgia wide receiver Tyler Simmons, who fans will always remember as the player who blocked an Alabama punt in the national title game but was incorrectly called offside.

The younger Simmons and his family were recently in East Lansing visiting with Dantonio and the Spartans.

Simmons has been committed to the program since October, however, after news of Dantonio’s retirement on Tuesday, Simmons tweeted that he will be delaying his signing until he has had more time to think about things.

“Due to the unforeseen retirement of Coach Dantonio and after discussing things with my family, I have decided to delay my signing with Michigan State University until further notice,” Simmons wrote. “I love everything that Michigan State has to offer and I appreciate the love and support that the fan base has shown me. However, with the uncertainty of the MSU program I have decided to take some time to weight out my options and think about where I will spend the next 4 years.”

Simmons told Rivals.com that other schools have already been calling. Some of those schools include Oklahoma State, Virginia and Washington State. At this time, though, Simmons said he is still considering Michigan State.

Tyler Simmons had his own thoughts on this, which he took to Twitter to share as well.

Simmons took issue with the timing of Dantonio’s retirement, saying he understands that coaches step down all the time but to do so the day before signing day just is not right.

Simmons is correct. It’s a shame that Dantonio could do so much good for a university for over a decade, but then to call it quits just one day before signing day shows no concern for any of the 20+ players who signed with Michigan State.

Notre Dame Football: Irish Dominate 2021 Rivals 100

What was viewed as a top class received further validation as the five Notre Dame commitments was the most of any school besides Ohio State who also had five.

Tuesday saw the release of the latest Rivals 100 list, ranking the top 100 prospects in the Class of 2021.

What was already viewed as a top class received further validation as the five Notre Dame commitments was the most of any school besides Ohio State who also had five.

Here’s how a few future members of the Fighting Irish Football team ranked:

Offensive tackle Blake Fisher of Avon, Michigan was the highest ranked Notre Dame commitment, checking in at 18.

The 6’6″, 330 pounder also checks in as the highest rated player from Michigan in 2021.

Lorenzo Styles, Jr. checks in at 34 overall and is the fourth highest rated receiver.

Styles committed to Notre Dame after making an official visit on USC weekend this last October and ranks as the second highest player for 2021 from the state of Ohio.

Quarterback Tyler Buchner of La Jolla, California sky-rocketed in these rankings moving up 23 spots to 42nd overall. Injuries kept Buchner from the field his sophomore but he wasted no time showing off his stardom this fall, leading his team to a state finals appearance.

Buchner had an insane performance in that game despite a loss and remains listed as a “pro style” quarterback – something you may question if you’re to watch any highlights.

Athlete Deion Colzie of Athens, Georgia also soared in these latest rankings, up 23 spots this time to 72.

The 6’4″ Colzie figures to be a favorite target of Buchner’s in the future.

Finally defensive tackle Gabriel Rubio came in at 95, down nine spots from his previous ranking.

Rubio, of St. Peters, Missouri is the only committed defensive player in Notre Dame’s 2021 recruiting class.

Although early, Notre Dame’s hot start on the recruiting trail has them currently sitting atop the 2021 recruiting rankings.
