Serbian president threatens to arrest Real Madrid player if he breaks quarantine again

Real Madrid forward Luka Jovic was seen breaking quarantine after flying back to Serbia.

The president of Serbia has gone to the extraordinary length of threatening to arrest Luka Jovic, a forward for Real Madrid, if he breaks coronavirus quarantine again.

Jovic flew home to Belgrade, Serbia this past week, despite all Real Madrid players being put under isolation after a member of the Real Madrid basketball team tested positive for COVID-19, a strain of the coronavirus.

The player did so with the blessing of the club, and he maintains he tested negative for coronavirus.

Despite that, Jovic was meant to self-quarantine while in Serbia. He … did not do that. Jovic got a ton of backlash from Serbian media when he was seen out and about in the city, despite being meant to be under self-isolation.

Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic spoke out on the issue regarding Jovic, as well as fellow Serbia teammate Nikola Ninkovic, who plays in Italy and was also seen out with Jovic.

“One of them [Ninkovic] is in a hotel and the other [Jovic] is in his apartment” Vucic said in a news conference on Thursday. (Translation via ESPN FC.)

“If either of them leaves those places, they will be arrested. I think the two of them regret what they have done, but I’ll make it clear to them that people’s lives are much more important than their millions. Despite all that, we’re not going to crucify anyone.”

Jovic gave a non-apology for the ages in a story posted to Instagram, saying:

“When I landed in Serbia, I again tested negative for coronavirus. I am very sorry that some people did their job unprofessionally and did not give me the correct instructions on how to behave in self-isolation.”

Former Georgia basketball player, now playing in Spain, tests positive for coronavirus

Trey Thompkins, a former Georgia basketball player now playing on Spain’s Real Madrid, has Coronavirus.

Sports leagues are right to take the drastic measures that we have seen put into place over the last 24 hours.

First, the NCAA announced all championship games will be held without fans, including swimming at UGA. Then, shortly after the NCAA’s announcement, the NBA suspended play indefinitely after one of its players tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

Outside of the United States, soccer league’s across Europe are suspending play or not allowing fans into the stadiums to attend the game.

In most recent news from Spain, basketball player Trey Thompkins, who plays for Real Madrid, has tested positive for the virus.

Thompkins is a former Georgia Bulldog. He is from Long Island, attended high school in Atlanta and, while at Georgia, was voted First Team All-SEC in 2010.

In 2011, Thompkins was taken by the Los Angeles Clippers in the second round of the NBA Draft.

Real Madrid’s basketball club is the same one that Luka Doncic, now a superstar on the Dallas Mavericks, played for.

As a result of Thompkin’s illness, both the Real Madrid basketball and soccer squads have been put into quarantine.

From EuroHoops.net:

The whole Valdebebas area which holds the shared practice facilities for both the basketball and football divisions is now under quarantine. As for the members of the squads themselves, they must remain home for 15 days.

Thompkin’s team was set to host a match on Thursday afternoon. Euroleague Basketball, however, has suspended Turkish Airlines EuroLeague action effective immediately.

UNLV Might Be Using Sam Boyd Stadium In 2020

Allegiant Stadium might not host every UNLV football game in 2020 for the Rebels.

UNLV Might Be Using Sam Boyd Stadium In 2020

Raiders are squeezing out Rebels for a few games.

Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire

Non-conference games could be moved.

One of the benefits of UNLV being a tenant for the Las Vegas Raiders Allegiant Stadium was the chance to play in a world-class stadium and get out of Sam Boyd Stadium.

Well, being a tenant also means that you are of the mercy of the landlord and the Raiders are putting to use a clause it has in its contract to move UNLV non-conference football games.

There are two games in question that could be moved are Sept. 5 against Louisiana Tech and Sept. 12 against Arizona State.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Ed Graney has the details of what this means for Rebel football.

The school agreed to the stipulation that it would be guaranteed one nonconference game in the stadium’s first year and that any other such contests must be cleared by the primary tenant. That would be the Raiders. I think there is at least a chance UNLV gets one of the two games at Allegiant and plays the other at Sam Boyd Stadium.

The home opener on Aug.t 29 vs. Cal seems to be safe but the other two between Louisiana Tech and Arizona State could see just one of those at the Raiders home stadium.

The other events in the stadium that will all but certainly bump the Rebels are a potential high-profile international soccer match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Those are just two of the biggest clubs in the world and Lionel Messi who is one of the best soccer players in the world plays for FC Barcelona.

So, it would make sense to have a sell out crowd over a game against Louisiana Tech and UNLV which might be lucky to draw 20,000 fans.

This is part of the deal and UNLV knows it. The reason the city agreed to a $750 million taxes to help fund the stadium was because the Rebels would have games there. However, the Raiders are the owners of the stadium and need to make money from holding events.

Sorry if this offends, but UNLV is not a big draw so if there is a chance to host a major international soccer game or a concert, then the choice is obvious and clear.

However, do not expect the Raiders to push the Rebels out as often as possible in favor of better events, but look for this to be a constant conversation over this partnership which could last a very long time.

Just keep Sam Boyd in good shape for when UNLV needs it to host a football game or two each year.

Real Madrid beats rivals Atletico Madrid thanks to an evil (and brilliant) red-card challenge

Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana final thanks to a smart and totally cynical red-card challenge from Valverde.

Real Madrid took on cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid in the Supercopa de España final on Sunday. The game went 90 minutes without a goal, and then in the waning minutes of extra time, the score was still notched 0-0.

Then, all hell broke loose.

Real Madrid had a chance to break the deadlock in the 115th minute, and pushed plenty of players forward to try and get a goal before the match went to penalty kicks. The risk didn’t pay off — Atletico cleared the ball successfully, then thanks to a lucky bounce, they were able to play in striker Alvaro Morata in alone on goal.

Morata had a clear breakaway, and a chance to win the game … until Real Madrid’s 21-year-old midfielder Federico Valverde brought him down with a vicious and cynical foul outside the penalty box.

It was a straight red card, one of the most obvious reds you’ll ever see in soccer outside of a punch being thrown. It was evil, cynical, and gross, and it was also completely brilliant.

After the foul, Atletico players were irate, and a massive shoving match ensued while the referee doled out yellow cards and tried to restore order.

You can see why they were so mad — Valverde exploited a loophole in soccer’s rules with the tackle.

By fouling him outside the box, it didn’t matter that it was a horrible tackle and denied an obvious and clear goalscoring opportunity — Atletico don’t get a penalty kick. A few yards farther down the field, and Morata would have earned a PK, one that Atletico most likely would have finished.

But it was outside the box. So Atletico was forced to take a direct free kick with Real Madrid getting to set up a wall. They didn’t convert. Valverde was ejected, but for Real Madrid, they didn’t care much. There were only five minutes remaining in the match.

They held off Atletico with 10 ment, then Real Madrid won the game in a penalty shootout, 4-1.

After the game, Valverde apologized to Morata.

Via the BBC: “I know it’s not good what I did, but I didn’t have any other option.”

What say you about the play?

Barcelona vs. Real Madrid highlights: What we saw from El Clasico

The match ended in a draw, but there were still plenty of highlights in the matchup between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Barcelona and Real Madrid took part in another edition of El Clasico on Wednesday, a game that was rescheduled from October after the previous game was postponed due to Catalan protests.

The match ended in a 0-0 draw, and what it lacked in goals, it had in drama. Barcelona’s Gerard Pique cleared a shot off the line, only for Sergio Ramos to go and block a shot from going in at the other end moments later.

Later in the match, Messi would put the ball on Jordi Alba’s left foot, in alone on goal, only for Alba to drag his shot just wide.

In the second half, Gareth Bale had multiple clear chances, including a ball go in the net for Real Madrid, only to have it called back for offside.

It ended 0-0. See all the action below.

Groups A and B are set in stone as far as this competition goes. PSG has won Group A with Real Madrid clinching the second spot. Bayern Munich takes the top spot in Group B with Tottenham Hotspur punching its ticket as well.

Manchester City ran away with Group C, while Shakhtar Donetsk and Dinamo Zagreb still have a chance at runner-up status. Shakhtar has the inside edge as it plays last-place Atalanta, while Dinamo plays City.

Group D winners Juventus will play a big role in deciding who gets the second spot. It plays Bayer Leverkusen, who is just one point behind Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone’s side goes up against Lokomotiv Moskow.

Reigning European champions Liverpool have secured Group E, while surprising Red Bull Salzburg will make Napoli sweat on the last day. The Italians have a two-point cushion coming into play, but still have some work to do when playing Genk.

Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan are neck-and-neck in Group F on seven points. Unfortunately for Antonio Conte’s Inter, it must play group winners Barcelona, while Dortmund gets to play Slavia Praha for its place in the knockout rounds.

Meanwhile, Groups G and H are both wide open with no team clinching a spot in the Round of 16 yet. It should be tense moments in both, as three different teams in each group have a chance to advance, while one will be sent to the Europa League.

Real Madrid vs. Espanyol

  • When: Saturday, December 7
  • Time: 7:00 a.m. ET
  • TV: beIN SPORTS
  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

Real Madrid arrives in this one in great form, unbeaten in eight matches and navigating a tough stretch of games brilliantly to stay neck and neck with Barcelona in first place. The two will meet at Camp Nou in less than two weeks and Los Blancos have two league matches until then to pick up six points, keep the unbeaten run going and play their biggest game of the season with all the confidence in the world.

This weekend’s game against relegation candidate Espanyol looks to be the perfect chance to win big at home and put pressure on Barça. After all, Espanyol is 19th in the table with just one win in its last seven and has one of the worst defenses in the league. The funny thing is Espanyol has been a Top 10 team on the road, so the team can’t be taken lightly. However, with Madrid having won four of the last five games against Espanyol and the urgency to keep up with Barcelona, there’s only one favorite to win this one.

Napoli bested Group E rivals Liverpool earlier in this Champions League campaign, but the chances of another win over the titleholders on Wednesday look slim after a rut in form. Liverpool has gone unbeaten in 13 matches since losing 2-0 in Naples in September—still its only defeat this season—while Carlo Ancelotti’s men haven’t won a game in more than a month.

The silver lining for Napoli is that it’s lost only once in 11 games. In fact, Ancelotti has led his team to only three defeats this term. However, it’s difficult to mask the notion it appears to have lost the will to win, drawing seven of its last 10 games (including the last three in a row).

Roberto Firmino struck near full time to give the Reds a 2-1 victory away to Crystal Palace on Saturday. The same day, Napoli led AC Milan for all of five minutes at the San Siro, before conceding to see out a 1-1 draw.

It just so happens Napoli’s last win in all competitions was a 3-2 Champions League result away to Red Bull Salzburg, providing some inspiration as to what the team is capable of. The Azzurri drew 0-0 at Genk in its previous away Champions League fixture, indicative of the inconsistency posed by this Napoli team.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have proved far more reliable. Liverpool has kept an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League and couldn’t be happier with its manager. Meanwhile, Ancelotti has been dogged by speculation over his future with Napoli currently seventh in Serie A.

An attacking drought, in particular, seems to have hampered Napoli of late. The team scored 15 goals in its first five games of the 2019-20 campaign, but there’s a sense of promise going unfulfilled after the team’s scored just 13 times in its 12 outings since then.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah was an unused substitute against Palace and should return to the starting lineup midweek, while centre-back Joel Matip looks likely to remain sidelined. Napoli left-backs Mario Rui and Faouzi Ghoulam each missed the draw against Milan, with the former in contention to return midweek. Striker Arkadiusz Milik was absent for that clash, but is also hoping to be featured in Ancelotti’s plans on Merseyside.

A win for either team at Anfield on Wednesday will guarantee a place in the last 16, but Napoli is in need of a result with third-place Salzburg not quite out of the qualification race just yet.
