PFF grades: Michigan football’s top 10 offensive players through 7 games

Got to like seeing that run game getting love!

Michigan football is out to a 7-0 start to the season and the Wolverines’ offense is firing from all cylinders.

Through the first seven games that the maize and blue have played, Michigan has the No. 6 scoring offense averaging 42.7 points per game and the Wolverines boast the No. 19 offense that gains 473.6 yards per game.

The maize and blue have one of the most prolific rushing attacks in all of college football. Michigan averages 241 yards on the ground which gives it the seventh-best run game in the country. The Wolverines’ offense has been moving as fast as Blake Corum can take it. Corum is the No. 7 leading runner in football totaling 901 yards in seven games. He is also tied for first in the country with 13 rushing scores.

Quarterback J.J. McCarthy continues to be the most accurate thrower in the country completing 77.1% of his passes. The sophomore has plenty of weapons to get the ball to like Ronnie Bell, Cornelius Johnson, Luke Schoonmaker, and Roman Wilson to name a few.

Looking back to the first half of the season, here is who Pro Football Focus grades as the top 10 offensive players for Michigan through seven games.

What they said: Mel Tucker previews Michigan football

Need to win this one! #GoBlue

It’s a big week for the state of Michigan.

What many call ‘the state championship’, the Spartans will travel to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan.

Michigan vs. Michigan State is one of the best rivalries in all of sports, there is no love lost between the two teams and both teams want nothing more but to annihilate the other.

Mel Tucker is entering his third season as the Spartans’ head coach. He is 2-0 against Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines. But the cards definitely fall in the hands of Michigan in this game.

The Wolverines will enter the game 7-0 on the year and the game will be aired on ABC at 7:30 p.m. — it will be a hostile environment for the Spartans. Michigan State is having a down year for its standards sitting at 3-4 on the season.

During his weekly press conference, the Michigan State head coach previewed his upcoming opponent, the Michigan Wolverines.

What CFP rankings would look like after Week 8 of college football

Projecting how the CFP rankings would look after Week 8

It was a relatively quiet week of college football with many teams taking the week off to prepare for the second half of the season.

That’s not to say there was no excitement in Week 8. We saw Ohio State, Tennessee and Alabama roll to victories. Clemson used a big fourth quarter to beat Syracuse in a ranked battle while LSU derailed Ole Miss’ quest for an SEC West title. In the Big 12, TCU beat Kansas State and Oklahoma State topped Texas. Oregon continues to impress after its season-opening loss to Georgia. The Ducks beat UCLA, 45-30, in a top-10 matchup.

Though the first round of College Football Playoff rankings are not released until Nov. 1, I tried to think like a member of the committee and projected what the they would look like if released today.

Finding its way into the rankings are Tulane and Liberty, which are 7-1. Tulane has a big win over Kansas State on its record. Liberty just beat BYU, 41-17, and its only loss came by one in a thriller at Wake Forest.

Pac-12 football Week 8 roundup: Colorado falls, Oregon becomes the favorite and more

Colorado reverted to its losing ways and Oregon may have become the Pac-12 favorite. For more on that and a rundown of everything in between, check out our Week 8 roundup:

We’re already through eight weeks.

Eight weeks into Pac-12 football and things have become more clear.

Colorado? The Buffs couldn’t sustain momentum following last week’s overtime win over Cal in Boulder. Colorado traveled north to Corvallis to face a good Oregon State team and between an inability to stop an already strong Beavers rushing attack — including allowing a career-high 178 yards and three touchdowns to Damien Martinez — and a listless showing from the Pac-12’s worst offense, the Buffs lost 42-9 and fell to 1-6 on the season. The Beavers, meanwhile, improved to 6-2 and became bowl eligible.

The lower tier of the conference maintained its status quo, as Stanford (3-4, 1-4 Pac-12) beat Arizona State (2-5, 1-3), 15-14, in a slog of a game in Palo Alto. Between an ongoing NCAA investigation, a mass exodus of assistants and a home loss to Eastern Michigan that led to the firing of Herm Edwards, the season has never been great for the Sun Devils and it didn’t improve on Saturday.

The game between Cal (3-4, 1-3) and Washington (6-2, 3-2) in northern California was a surprisingly great game.

[lawrence-related id=12399,12395,12343,12341,12288]

Cal kept it close against a quality Huskies team until the fourth quarter, where two quick touchdowns broke a deadlock and gave Washington a 28-14 lead with 10:19 remaining. The Golden Bears fought back, though, as an 80-yard drive ending with an 8-yard touchdown catch by Mavin Anderson cut the Washington lead down to 28-21 with 6:11 left.

Cal got the ball back late with a chance to send it to overtime but fell short on a fourth-and-2 from Washington’s 42 with 28 seconds left.

The game of the day coming in was up in Eugene with then-No. 9 UCLA (6-1, 3-1) visiting then-No. 10 Oregon (6-1, 4-0) in a game with both Pac-12 and national implications. Would it live up to the hype, though?

Not really.

UCLA’s offense put on a good showing and continued to show why it’s a threat, but between an onside kick recovery by Oregon early in the second quarter — leading to an Oregon touchdown to make it 24-10 Ducks — and Bo Nix dicing up a leaky UCLA secondary to the tune of 283 yards and five touchdowns on 22-of-28 passing, to go along with 51 yards on the ground, Oregon established itself as the favorite in the Pac-12.

UCLA needs to regroup after its first loss of the season, but the Bruins still find themselves in the three-team race for the Pac-12 title with the aforementioned Oregon and USC. As it stands now, the USC-UCLA game on Nov. 19 could determine the final spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

It was mostly a status quo week in the Pac with some surprises mixed in, and with Oregon staking its claim to the top of the pecking order, we head down the home stretch with the end of October upon us.

Enjoy the show.

Updated Heisman Trophy contenders after Week 8 of college football

Updated Heisman rankings after Week 8

In most cases, the Heisman Trophy is a quarterback’s award. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young looks to repeat in 2022, but he has stiff competition from Ohio State’s CJ Stroud and Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker.

But let’s not forget about Michigan running back Blake Corum, who has been on an absolute tear over the last five games. Also finding his way into the rankings is Tennessee wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, who has 381 yards and 7 touchdowns in his last two games.

I also wanted to highlight some guys you’ve maybe never heard of but are top-five nationally in key stats: running backs Israel Abanikanda (Pitt), Khalan Laborn (Marshall), Chase Brown (Illinois), and receivers Ali Jennings (ODU) and Keylon Stokes (Tulsa).

Everything Jim Harbaugh said the week of Michigan football vs. Michigan State

You can tell he’s fired up and ready to go! #GoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — There’s only one game that gets bigger than this one every year, and that’s still weeks out.

Michigan football had its first really big test just over a week ago when it took down Penn State, 41-17. Now rival Michigan State comes to town for a night game, reeling but recovering. The Spartans have won the last two in this series and won their last game against Wisconsin. However, with a 3-4 record, MSU hasn’t lived up to the lofty expectations in East Lansing. A win on Saturday in The Big House would bring some redemption to a moribund season.

However, the Wolverines are looking to keep their record perfect by beating their rival at home.

On Monday, head coach Jim Harbaugh met with the media to discuss the matchup. Here is everything he had to say.

NBA Twitter reacts to Warriors holding on for win in high-scoring battle vs. Kings, 130-125

After the Warriors held on for the win in a high-scoring battle against the Kings, NBA Twitter chimed in with different reactions.

There was no shortage of points on Sunday night at Chase Center in San Francisco.

It didn’t take long for the Golden State Warriors to get cooking against the Sacramento Kings in their first meeting of the 2022-23 season. Behind a 50-point second quarter, the Warriors posted a red-hot 89 points in the first half on Sunday night.

Curry tallied 28 points in the first half. The reigning NBA Finals Most Valuable Player was on-fire, hitting five triples in the second quarter. Andrew Wiggins added 18 points, while Jordan Poole notched 12 points all in the first half.

Despite the Warriors taking a 19-point lead at halftime, the Kings didn’t go anywhere. Behind Richaun Holmes, De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk and Terrence Davis, the Kings mounted a fierce comeback, cutting Golden State’s lead all the way down to four points with just over a minute remaining. However, the Warriors were able to close out the Kings in the final minute to hold on for the win, 130-125.

Curry led all scorers with 33 points on 11-of-22 shooting from the field with seven made triples for his third consecutive game with 30 or more points. Fox notched 26 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the floor with 10 assists and five rebounds in 37 minutes on Sunday.

After the Kings couldn’t complete the comeback against the Warriors, the NBA community on Twitter chimed in with different reactions. Here’s a look at what fans and analysts were saying on Twitter on Sunday night.

Nebraska Basketball: Huskers defeat Chadron State 87-60

Nebraska defeated Chadron State 87-60

The Nebraska Cornhuskers played an exhibition match against Chadron State on Sunday. It was a solid showing for the Cornhuskers, as they walked away with a 87-60 victory.

Forward Juwan Gary led the way with 23 points and nine rebounds in a little over 19 minutes. The Alabama transfer was efficient shooting 9-17 from the field.

Transfers Sam Griesel and Emmanuel Bandoumel also had good performances. Bandoumel had nine points and two steals. Meanwhile, Grisel had 14 points on 6-9 shooting. He also added seven assists, four rebounds, and a steal.

Griesel also had the biggest highlight of the game. In the second half, he posterized a Chadron State defender on a strong drive to the basket.

Nebraska will play another exhibition game on October 30 against Colorado.

Updated Heisman Trophy race odds, performances, after Week 8

An updated look at the Heisman race with new odds and performances from Week 8. Is C.J. Stroud still the favorite? #GoBucks #Heisman

Winning a Heisman Trophy puts an athlete in a very, very exclusive club. It also punches your ticket to the “Heisman House” commercials, so there’s that too. Well, if you can stand to hang out with Michigan’s Desmond Howard that is.

Ohio State has a long history of Heisman trophies, tied for the most of any program with Notre Dame and Oklahoma (seven). Sorry USC, Reggie Bush took the Trojans’ total down to six after he was stripped of his.

This year the Buckeyes have another Heisman hopeful, quarterback C.J. Stroud. He was one of the front-runners for the bronze statue in the preseason and nothing has happened to change that aside from Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker coming on strong after the victory over Alabama and the offensive numbers he’s putting up.

Each week, we like to check in on the updated odds and performances of the players that are on the shortlist to stiff-arm the competition and take arguably the most coveted individual award in all of American sports home.

Stroud has been at or near the top so far this season, but after a week in the offense didn’t look like its potent self against Iowa, how did it change things? Here are the updated odds according to Tipico, and last week’s performances of the top guys to compare it all.

Where do Stroud and the other top contenders stand after Week 8?
