ESPN Football Power Index shares early prediction of Auburn’s 2023 season

Does ESPN’s Football Power Index have Auburn going to a bowl game this season?

Spring practice has concluded, so now we must wait over 130 days for Auburn’s first official game of the [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] era.

In anticipation of what should be another exciting season of college football, ESPN has revealed its early prediction of Auburn football’s record through its Football Power Index.

The FPI, which is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season, has released its early rankings for the 2023 FBS season. According to the FPI, Auburn is currently the No. 39 team in the country and is No. 11 in terms of SEC standings.

Of course, it is still too early to truly gauge what kind of season Auburn will have as the transfer portal window is still open until April 30. Because of this, rosters could change for better or for worse, which could affect each team’s FPI ranking.

As the spring practice period comes to a close, let’s take a look at how the ESPN FPI predicts Auburn football’s season to shake out.

Three Georgia players selected in first round of final USA TODAY mock draft

Five former Dawgs taken in this mock draft

With the NFL draft right around the corner, College Sports Wire has published its final NFL mock draft, predicting the outcome of the first three rounds.

Five former Georgia Bulldogs are projected to be selected in this mock draft, plus cornerback Tyrique Stevenson who transferred to Miami.

From Jalen Carter to Darnell Washington, here’s the projected landing spot for these six former Georgia Bulldogs in the 2023 NFL draft:

Georgia OT Broderick Jones compared to former Bulldog ahead of draft

UGA left tackle Broderick Jones has been compared to a fellow Georgia standout ahead of the NFL draft

Georgia Bulldogs left tackle Broderick Jones has been compared to former Georgia left tackle Andrew Thomas ahead of the 2023 NFL draft. Jones is currently projected, per Draft Wire, to be drafted with the No. 14 selection of the draft.

Jones’ predraft visits include the Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots, and New York Jets. Broderick Jones is a former five-star recruit. He tested quite well at the NFL combine and is extremely athletic.

Broderick Jones has a lot of talent and is quite mobile, but does not come to the NFL with a ton of game experience. Jones started for Georgia in 2022 and played a key role in Georgia’s national championship win over Alabama a couple years ago.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein compares Broderick Jones to New York Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas. Jones and Thomas never played together, but they both played left tackle at a very high level during their careers at Georgia.

Ultra-athletic tackle prospect with the size, length and potential to develop into a plus starter on the left side. Jones’ frame and technique both are in the developmental phase. His entry into block fits can be a little disjointed. He needs to improve his punch accuracy and timing to make the most of his length in pass protection. Jones is very talented at working into space and landing a block to help spring the running game. He has the nimble feet to mirror or recover against the rush. Jones isn’t a finished product, but the physical and athletic gifts allow for a projection as a good, long-time starter.

It took Andrew Thomas some time to adjust to the NFL with the New York Giants. However, Thomas had an outstanding season in 2022. Thomas was the No. 4 pick of the 2020 NFL draft.

Georgia DL Bear Alexander visiting Pac-12 school

Georgia Bulldogs defensive lineman Bear Alexander entered the transfer portal and is now visiting USC.

Georgia defensive lineman Bear Alexander is visiting the USC Trojans from April 21-23. Alexander entered the NCAA transfer portal during the spring transfer window and did not play in Georgia’s spring game.

Bear Alexander is a former four-star recruit. He was ranked as the No. 50 prospect in the class of 2022. Alexander played high school football in Texas prior to spending his final high school season at IMG Academy in Florida.

Now, he is one of the top players in the NCAA transfer portal. Alexander could help make a difference for USC’s leaky defense. The Trojans finished No. 94 in scoring defense; they allowed an average of 29.2 points per game. For perspective, Georgia has allowed more than 29 points just three times over the past two seasons. The Bulldogs have five shutouts over the same period of time.

Alexander recorded nine total tackles as a freshman in 2022. He added two sacks. Alexander had a particularly strong performance in the national championship game against TCU.

If Alexander transfers, it would be a tough loss for Georgia’s defensive line. The Bulldogs were counting on Alexander having a larger role in 2023. However, Georgia still has a great deal of talent along its defensive front.

Another school to watch in Alexander’s recruitment is the Texas Longhorns. On3 reported Alexander’s visit with USC.

Report: DT Perrion Winfrey in attendance at voluntary workouts after arrest

Perrion Winfrey is in Berea for phase one workouts.

The Cleveland Browns are back in Berea for phase one of their offseason workouts as the 2023 NFL draft now sits just a week away. As players pour back into the building, there is one surprising name that has made his way back to Northeast Ohio as defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey is on-site despite his arrest earlier this month (according to The OBR’s Brad Stainbrook).

Head coach Kevin Stefanski did not have much to say about the Winfrey situation in his press conference to start offseason workouts other than to add that the team harps on player safety outside of the building continuously. While his leash may be short moving forward, Winfrey is back in the building.

LOOK: Michigan football LB Joey Velazquez hits a grand slam

Go Joey and #GoBlue!

Joey Velazquez couldn’t participate in Michigan football spring ball. Not because he was injured or precluded or anything like that. But because he’s a true dual-threat, who splits time with the baseball team.

Velazquez has long been a reserve on both the football and baseball team, but of late, he’s been seen more time. He started the first five games of the season this year, but struggled at the plate and saw his time dwindle. However, after some key at-bats, he’s becoming a reliable weapon for the maize and blue on the diamond.

On Wednesday, Velazquez had about as good of an at-bat as one could have, hitting a towering home run with the bases loaded for a grand slam. Looks like he can do it all.

Velazquez is doing well in baseball, but the linebacker position he plays for football is becoming increasingly loaded. However, he’s been stalwart on special teams, having made several big plays, including forcing a key turnover in 2021 at Wisconsin.

Cowboys News: Trade? Top WR prospect fanboys Jerry, Irvin suspension extends to draft

From @ToddBrock24f7 | Trading out of the 26th spot is a possibility; Marvin Mims Jr.’s fanboy moment, and the top prospect who didn’t visit with a single team.

After all the number-crunching and tape-analyzing, maybe the Cowboys don’t want the 26th pick after all. In today’s News and Notes, we start to entertain the possibility of trading the first-round draft pick. But up? Or down? We’ve got options for either direction (including the best college running back in the country)… but one team writer maintains that the front office could stay right where they are and wait for a big name to fall to them.

Meanwhile, a top wide receiver prospect says he had a “fanboy moment” meeting the owner of his favorite childhood team, and you’ll meet the likely first-round pick who reveals he didn’t get a single visit with an NFL team. Also, Dak Prescott is holding out hope for the return of his best friend, we’ve got sleeper picks at a position that Dallas will be looking at, we examine how early is too early for a defensive tackle, the NFL announces the musical acts to wrap up each night of draft weekend, and we say farewell to a former Cowboy who holds a unique place in franchise history.

NFL pays tribute to DE Chris Smith

NFL Films compiles a tribute in honor of Chris Smith

The Cleveland Browns lost a former teammate yesterday as defensive end Chris Smith passed away. Spending the 2018 and 2019 seasons with the Browns, he was known as a soft-spoken leader in the locker room. Today, NFL Films has released a tribute to Smith as they cut together archives from their production.

Our hearts continue to go out to the family of Smith during this time.

McShay: ‘Dallas is obsessed’ with drafting RB; trading up for Bijan Robinson ‘wouldn’t shock me’

From @ToddBrock24f7 | If the Texas RB falls past Philadelphia at No. 10, ESPN’s draft expert believes the Cowboys may elect to make “a splash” and go get him.

ESPN’s draft guru Todd McShay has Texas running back Bijan Robinson ranked as the second-best player in the upcoming NFL draft. He says “probably close to a dozen teams” he’s spoken to have Robinson in the top five, grade-wise.

But that doesn’t mean he’ll be selected that high. And if he starts to slip into the middle of the first round, he just might tantalize some RB-needy club into trading up to get him.

McShay believes the Cowboys could be that team.

Appearing on The Dan Patrick Show this week, McShay gushed over Robinson’s skill set, imagining him as being able to fill a Christian McCaffrey-esque role as both a powerful runner and a legitimate receiving threat. And he says the Dallas front office may not be able to resist, should Robinson make it past, say, the Eagles with the 10th overall pick.

“Dallas is obsessed with getting a running back that can be their guy, be a complement to Tony Pollard, like they had with Zeke when Zeke was closer to his prime,” McShay said. “Mike McCarthy is dying for a big power back like that, wants to run the football. They want to be a run-based team, and they would love to bring the Texas star into Dallas and make him the star of their offense.”

Robinson would change the look of the Cowboys offense, for sure, giving them a serious one-two punch out of the backfield and preventing defenses from doing much double-teaming of receivers like CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and Michael Gallup.

But trading up to get Robinson would cost Dallas in the later rounds. The question will be whether the war room feels it’s better to amass more players at more positions… or sacrifice the backup linebacker or project edge rusher they’d get in the third round in order to grab a transcendent talent who could touch the ball 20 times a game.

The deafening buzz such a move would create around the league- and in the Lone Star State especially- may be just too much for the Jones Boys to pass up.

“Dallas is sitting at 26,” McShay continued. “It wouldn’t shock me if they made a splash, jumped up into the teens, ahead of teams like Detroit and the Chargers and went and got Bijan, maybe around 14, 15, 16.”

The Cowboys aren’t historically averse to trading up per se, but improving 10 to 12 spots is an awfully big leap. In 2011, they climbed eight spots to take cornerback Morris Claiborne. In 2010, they traded up to get wide receiver Dez Bryant, but they moved just three spots to get him. They traded into the first round- using later-round picks- in 2007 to select linebacker Anthony Spencer.

To get themselves into the mid-teens this year, as McShay is suggesting, it would certainly cost them enough to qualify as a splash.

The Cowboys would then have to hope that Robinson makes an even bigger splash come fall.

Latest Todd McShay, Mel Kiper Jr. three-round NFL mock draft drops C.J. Stroud, includes other Buckeyes

Would you put money on C.J. Stroud going No. 1 overall at this point, or would you take Bryce Young? #GoBucks

We’re inching ever so closer to the 2023 NFL draft, and with it, there continues to be some movement of players based on what the word on the street is. Two guys that are more plugged in than almost anyone out there are ESPN’s Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr.

And while the two of them normally compose their own separate mock drafts, they recently teamed up to compile a three-round version just over a week out from what we’ll see in Kansas City.

It wasn’t that long ago that Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud was the odds-on favorite to be selected No. 1 overall by the Carolina Panthers, but that seems to have changed now with Alabama’s Bryce Young now being the betting man’s pick.

That’s reflected in the McShay/Kiper mock as well with Stroud dropping a wee bit, but he’s not the only Ohio State player included in the three-round projection. Here’s what the dynamic NFL draft duo says about Stroud and each OSU player they think will go in the first three rounds.
