7 takeaways from the top RB, OL performances at NFL Combine

Here are 7 takeaways from the top RB, OL performances at night 2 on the field at the #NFLCombine

On Thursday, the Eagles were able to get an up-close look at a talented group of wide receiver and tight end prospects for April’s upcoming draft.

On Friday the running backs and offensive linemen took the field in Indianapolis, with several big-named offensive linemen and dual-threat running backs greatly improving their stock.

The NFL Combine got off to a blazing start on Thursday night and Friday’s group from the offensive line was record-setting as well.

Here are seven takeaways from night two.

3 teams former Alabama RB Brian Robinson Jr. could be drafted by

Could you see B-Rob on any of these teams?

Former Alabama running back Brian Robinson Jr. was a player that had been on roster for the Crimson Tide for quite some time, but hardly ever heard his number called. Well, it was seemingly worth the wait, because in his senior season, Robinson was the lead back and showcased to the nation what he is capable of.

Now, as he prepares for the 2022 NFL draft, it is important to realize he is not as highly touted as Josh Jacobs and Najee Harris, who both recently were selected in the first round. Robinson joins a draft class of talented running backs, which understandably leads to a lower projection.

Recent mock draft project Robinson to be drafted sometime early on day No. 3, between the fourth and fifth round.

Mike Phillips of Fansided projects Robinson to be drafted in round No. 4 to the New York Giants, while Pro Football Networks’ Ian Cummings also has Robinson being drafted in the fourth, but by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Finally, Justin Fried of The Jet Press, believes Robinson’s name will be called in round No. 5 by the New York Jets.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover former Alabama players throughout the offseason as they prepare for the 2022 NFL draft.

Seahawks sign former Chiefs draft pick Darwin Thompson to reserve/future deal

Former #Chiefs RB Darwin Thompson has signed a reserve/future contract with the #Seahawks after spending time on #Bucs and #Chiefs practice squads in 2021.

Former Kansas City Chiefs draft pick Darwin Thompson has landed a reserve/future contract with the Seattle Seahawks per the team’s public relations Twitter account.

The Chiefs selected Thompson of Utah State in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft. He appeared in 26 career games with Kansas City over the course of two seasons, recording 80 touches for 333 yards and three scores during that span.

Thompson was waived at the onset of the 2021 NFL season during 53-man roster cuts. Instead of re-signing with the Chiefs’ practice squad, Thompson signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad. He spent the entire 2021 NFL season in Tampa Bay, but he made his return to Kansas City during the 2021 postseason when the team was dealing with injuries to Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Darrel Williams.

When Thompson was elevated to the 53-man roster ahead of the wild-card game against the Steelers he was made inactive. Williams tried to gut through his injury and play, but he only ended up playing a few snaps during the game.

When the Chiefs lost to the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC championship game, Thompson’s practice squad contract expired. He sought out another opportunity instead of signing a reserve/future deal with Kansas City, similar to what happened after he was waived in 53-man roster cuts. It’s clear he’s looking for a situation where he could perhaps be a long-term fixture. In Seattle, he’ll have a chance to compete for that opportunity.

Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire reflects on 2021 NFL season in Instagram post

#Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire reflected on the injury frustration from the 2021 NFL season, offered encouraging words for the future.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire shared a post reflecting on the highs and lows of his 2021 NFL season.

The second-year RB started in 10 regular-season games after dealing with an early-season MCL sprain and a late-season shoulder injury. It was hardly the season that fans were hoping to see from Edwards-Helaire after his rookie campaign. He recorded just 119 carries for 517 yards and four rushing touchdowns along with 19 receptions for 129 yards and two scores in 2021, playing less than 30% of the team’s total offensive snaps.

On Wednesday morning, Edwards-Helaire took to social media to reflect on his second year in Kansas City.

“Somethings are hard to do.
From a stomach surgery in the last off-season, to multiple injuries during this season. I hated every second I couldn’t be on the field with my dawgs!
Through it all! Countless lessons learned, knowledge gained beyond me , put me in a head space where I felt I needed to be.
With all the knowledge in the world, it doesn’t take a genius to know there are no do overs..
We know what we all want in life .. I just want to WIN! and be the BEST at what I do!
LETS GLYDE CHIEFSKINGDOM❤️💛
~DRO”

It sounds like Edwards-Helaire is ready to make the most of his first healthy NFL offseason. Gallbladder surgery limited him in the 2021 NFL offseason, but this time around he’ll be able to focus solely on improving his game and not on recovery. If Edwards-Helaire truly wants to help this team win and be considered the best at what he does, there is plenty of work to be done this offseason.

7 RB prospects for the Eagles to watch at the 2022 Senior Bowl

2022 #SeniorBowl: 7 running back prospects for the #Eagles to watch #TheDraftStartsInMobile #NFLDraft2022 #FlyEaglesFly

We’re less than 100-days from the start of the 2022 NFL draft and with Philadelphia owning three first-round picks, Howie Roseman will need to increase the normal due diligence done on eligible prospects.

The draft actually starts in Mobile, Alabama, where the start of senior bowl practices will kick off on Tuesday, February 1.

The rosters are stacked with talent on both the American and National teams, with the former Eagles assistant coach Duce Staley leading the American side.

We’re profiling the position groups for both teams, while also breaking down several players at each group for Philadelphia to watch.

The first group up we’ll be the running backs.

Eric Bieniemy comments on effectiveness of Chiefs’ RB tandem

The #Chiefs’ RBs Clyde Edwards-Helaire & Darrel Williams have been effective recently. Eric Bieniemy spoke on the chemistry being built in the run game. | from @TheJohnDillon

A former NFL running back himself, Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has some strong opinions on his team’s implementation of the run game through four games. With MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes playing generationally good football every week, the fundamentals of an old-school ground attack are sometimes lost in the mix in the Chiefs’ prolific offense.

Until recent weeks, their ability to run the ball effectively was called into question. In their most recent strategies to move the ball on the ground have worked, leading to a dynamic approach to keeping up with the defense’s lackluster play. In comments to reporters ahead of Thursday’s practice, Bieniemy said that the one-two punch he’s found between Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Darrel Williams has worked well for the Chiefs.

“I think the more the merrier,” He explained of the duo, “The more yards you can put on the ground—this is the former running backs coach talking now—the more pressure that it applies to the defense. It’s been good watching these guys do what they do. More importantly, it’s been fun watching the O-line open up those seams upfront. And that’s the thing that I love, these guys are developing chemistry together. On top of that, you’re seeing the receivers and tight ends getting blocks downfield.”

Both backs are products of Louisiana State University, and they have shown the grit associated with that program’s ground game at the pro level this season. The Chiefs rank eighth in the NFL in team rushing, with 521 yards on the ground this season. Bieniemy stressed the importance of a balanced approach moving forward.

“Then, the only thing that’s doing is helping Clyde (Edwards-Helaire) to grow confidence, and watching young Darrel Williams come along as well,” Bieniemy continued, “So, it’s good that we’re doing this, and we want to continue this, but when it’s all said and done with, we also understand the importance of throwing the football. We’ve got to make sure that we stay efficient and that we’re taking care of the ball. That’s the most important thing”

Only about a quarter of their way through a season in which the expectation is that they’ll reach a third consecutive Super Bowl, the Chiefs’ running back room is moving in the right direction. They seem to be hitting their stride at just the right time ahead of a big matchup against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

POLL: Where will RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire rank among Chiefs greats?

Is Edwards-Helaire on his way to becoming an all-time great rusher for the #Chiefs? Vote in our poll:

[crowdsignal poll=10877604]

The Kansas City Chiefs have been blessed with some incredible players at the running back position throughout franchise history. From the AFL days, with players like Abner Haynes and Curtis McClinton to the early 2000s with Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson. Most recently they’ve had Jamaal Charles, the franchise leading rusher, on the squad.

While the current team is much more pass-heavy than teams of old, they recently added former LSU RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the No. 32 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft. He’s the first running back the team has selected in the first round since they drafted former Penn State RB Larry Johnson at pick No. 27 in 2003.

This is the first significant investment the team has made at the position in nearly two decades, but where will Edwards-Helaire rank among the team’s all-time greats when it’s all said and done? He started in 13 games as a rookie, recording 803 yards and four rushing touchdowns on 181 carries. He added 36 receptions on 54 targets for 297 yards and a score.

If Edwards-Helaire averages 803 yards per season over the next three seasons— which would likely be considered a disappointment— he’ll move into the top-10 rushing yards leaders in franchise history. If he averaged just four rushing touchdowns per season in that same span, he’d be tied for 13th in franchise history. If he averages just 181 carries per season, he’ll have the 10th most carries in franchise history by the end of the 2023 season.

Edwards-Helaire didn’t have the luxury of having stability on the offensive line as a rookie, with constant injury struggles throughout the year. It all, of course, culminated in the Super Bowl LV loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That’s something that the Chiefs are very much so looking to improve in 2021 and beyond.

It’s also important to keep in mind, Edwards-Helaire is just 22 years old. He’s on his rookie contract and the team will have an opportunity to exercise a fifth-year option in the future. He should be on the team through the 2024 season before the Chiefs will need to decide to extend his contract or let him walk in free agency.

So what do you think, Chiefs Kingdom? After one season of seeing Edwards-Helaire in action, where do you expect him to rank among the franchise’s greats at the position? Be sure to vote in the poll at the top of the page and let us know your thoughts on Facebook and Twitter.

Which Alabama RB will breakout in 2021?

The Alabama running back room used to be dominated by Najee Harris, but with him now in the NFL who will take over as the lead back?

Alabama has had some great running backs come and go over the years. Crimson Tide ball carriers usually end their collegiate careers as household names across the country; whether it’s Heisman winners Derrick Henry and Mark Ingram, or recent stars such as Damien Harris and Najee Harris.

With Harris being selected No. 24 overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2021 NFL draft, Alabama now has somewhat of a power vacuum at the tailback position.

In recent years, the running back room has seen the ball spread around a decent amount, and when the top guy departs from the program, the next guy moves up. However, that was not the case in 2020.

Harris accumulated 1,466 yards and 26 touchdowns on 251 attempts. The running back with the next-highest stats: Brian Robinson with 91 carries.

Now, 91 is still a sizeable number of carries, but it does not compare to what Alabama has done in the past.

For example, the last time Najee Harris was not the starting running back for Alabama, he was the third-string back behind Josh Jacobs and Damien Harris.

Despite being a sophomore behind two current NFL starters on the depth chart, Najee still got 117 carries.

With those high level of reps second-string and third-string players often get, Crimson Tide fans know what to expect in the upcoming seasons when those players move up the depth chart and are then the starters.

Mike Rodak of AL.com projects the starting running back will be Brian Robinson, who was a four-star product out of Tuscaloosa in the 2017 recruiting class.

Robinson has shown flashes of potential, but has never been able to compete with those that sat above him – most of whom are now starting in the NFL.

Then, according to Rodak, sophomore Roydell Williams, a 2020 four-star Alabama native, could get a solid amount of looks based on his production.

Williams is likely a new name to Alabama fans, but he soon won’t be. He is a great horizontal runner that can cut at the line of scrimmage and is shifty enough tomake linebackers miss. To top it all off, he’s got the breakway speed to give you a guaranteed six points if he can get through the secondary.

In Alabama’s spring game, Williams carried the ball 12 times for 45 yards.

I predict Williams will become the starter for Alabama long before anyone anticipates.

After Williams, Rodak includes Jase McClellan, who saw some action in 2020, Keilan Robinson, who has began transitioning to wide receiver, and Trey Sanders, the former five-star who has dealt with injuries over the last two years.

Report: Chiefs agree to terms with RB Darrel Williams on one-year deal

Williams was a key depth piece at running back for the Chiefs this season.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to build their 90-man offseason roster, this time keeping one of their own around on a new contract.

According to Kansas City Star beat writer Herbie Teope, the Chiefs have agreed to terms with RB Darrel Williams on a one-year contract. He’ll make up to $2.13 million nearly a million in guaranteed money attached to the deal.

The former LSU Tiger helped bolster the backfield in Kansas City this past season. He played a number of snaps on third down, working a pass-blocker and pass-catcher. Late in the year, they used Williams in short-yardage situations in the ground game, running between the tackles. With the changes coming on the offensive line, he could well see more success in those types of situations in the future.

When injuries to both Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Le’Veon Bell happened, Williams was the one to answer the call for the Chiefs. He even started his first career game in the playoffs against the Cleveland Browns, with 94 yards from scrimmage on just 17 touches. During the regular season, Williams appeared in all 16 games, carrying the ball 39 times for 169 yards and one touchdown. He also caught 18 passes on 26 targets for 116 yards.

Williams was set to be a restricted free agent this year and the contract that he’s coming back on isn’t a tender, the guaranteed money attached to the deal is a tell on that. Agreeing to a new contract also ensures that the Chiefs wouldn’t have to risk losing him to an opposing team signing him an offer sheet.

This is a smart move by Kansas City when you consider the chemistry in the backfield. Edwards-Helaire and Williams are former teammates from their LSU days and good friends. Darwin Thompson will also be in the mix. We also can’t forget that they’ll welcome back RB Damien Williams into the room as he returns from an opt-out during the 2020 NFL season.

Latest injury update on Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire

We have a bit more information on the injuries that Clyde Edwards-Helaire is dealing with.

We can now put a name to the injuries suffered by Kansas City Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire in Week 15 against the New Orleans Saints.

Earlier today when Andy Reid spoke to the media, Edwards-Helaire was still under evaluation. Reid didn’t have any new information on the severity of the injury or whether Edwards-Helaire would be considered at risk of being placed on injured reserve. Reid did say they would know more later today and it appears that information has got out to the media.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Edwards-Helaire suffered both a high-ankle sprain and a hip strain. This is really a best-case scenario as these two injuries would suggest that there aren’t any significant ligament tears, fractures or anything like that.

Rapoport also had a report on Edwards-Helaire early this morning and this update sort of echoes what he said then. The Chiefs are hopeful that Edwards-Helaire will have a chance to return during the course of the playoffs. The high-ankle sprain will likely be the determining factor on whether the rookie RB will be able to return. Depending on the grade of the sprain, he could miss anywhere from three to eight weeks.

It’s unclear if the Chiefs will choose to put Edwards-Helaire on injured reserve given the circumstances. There were no transactions on Monday, so if they do decide to do this, it’ll come later in the week. Edwards-Helaire would be able to return within three weeks under the new injured reserve rules. However, if there’s even a chance that he could be ready sooner, they’ll likely just keep him on the 53-man roster.
