Rivals National Recruiting Director projects 4-star DT Rayshaun Benny to MSU

Yet another recruiting expert forecasts the Spartans landing four-star defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny out of Oak Park, Mich.

We continue to see positive vibes for Michigan State football on the recruiting trail, with yet another recruiting expert forecasting the Spartans to land four-star defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny out of Oak Park, Mich.

Mike Farrell — National Recruiting Director of Rivals.com — recently hashed out his thoughts on the intense recruiting battle for Benny and believes MSU is in store for some good news when he announces his commitment on Monday.

“This changed quickly, huh? At one point it looked like Kentucky was the biggest threat to Michigan because of the Justin Rogers connection, but Mel Tucker and his staff have done a great job selling the program and opportunity at Michigan State. And this will be another massive in-state blow to Jim Harbaugh and Michigan if it happens and it appears like it will,” Farrell wrote in an article published on Rivals.com.

Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Adam Gorney expressed a similar opinion in that same article, stating he likes the Spartans to land Benny but would “caution those who think Benny is an absolute lock to the Spartans now,” citing that nothing is ever certain in a battle of this nature.

Earlier this week, a handful of 247Sports crystal ball predictions flipped from Michigan to Michigan State, creating a lot of buzz on the recruiting trail. Penn State and Kentucky are also among his four finalists, but it appears this battle will come down to the Spartans and Wolverines at this point.

Benny is the No. 14 defensive tackle prospect in the 2021 class, and No. 6 overall recruit in the state of Michigan. Should Benny choose the Spartans next week, he will be the highest-rated player new head coach Mel Tucker has landed and the first four-star prospect, according to 247Sports.

Report: West Bloomfield 4-star ATH trending towards MSU Football

The good news is continuing to come out for MSU football, with another potential big-time recruit reportedly trending towards the Spartans.

[jwplayer 7KdbBDiP]

The good news is continuing to come out for Michigan State football, with another potential big-time recruit reportedly trending towards the Spartans.

Corey Robinson of Rivals entered a futurecast on Tuesday in favor of Michigan State for four-star athlete Dillon Tatum of West Bloomfield. Tatum, who is listed at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, is the No. 14 ATH and No. 5 overall recruit in Michigan for the class of 2022.

Robinson said he doesn’t anticipate anything is “imminent” for Tatum, but “felt like Michigan State has been in a very favorable position for him for a few months.”

Tatum currently holds offers from countless Power Five programs, including Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Georgia, Florida and Penn State.

There are currently no crystal ball predictions entered for Tatum on 247Sports at this time.

On Monday, a handful of crystal ball forecasts from 247Sports flipped from Michigan to Michigan State for four-star defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny. The Oak Park, Mich. 2021 prospect is expected to announce his commitment on Nov. 9.

Should Michigan State land both of these recruits, it would bode really well for what new head coach Mel Tucker is looking to build in East Lansing. Especially, with both being top talents from the state of Michigan.

Multiple 247Sports experts predict MSU Football to land 4-star DT Rayshaun Benny

For the longest time, Michigan had been the popular pick by 247Sports recruiting analysts to land Rayshaun Benny, but that changed on Monday

[jwplayer AyZHPp3A]

Could the Spartans already be reaping the recruiting benefits from Saturday’s upset of in-state rival Michigan? Apparently that’s the case in the battle for big-time recruit Rayshaun Benny out of Oak Park, Mich.

For the longest time, Michigan had been the popular pick by 247Sports recruiting analysts to land the four-star defensive tackle from Oak Park — but that changed on Monday afternoon. Four of the seven crystal ball predictions flipped within a five-minute range from Michigan to Michigan State — including lead experts Allen Trieu, Steve Wiltfong and Sam Webb.

Benny had originally planned on announcing his commitment a few weeks ago, but later announced he was delaying his decision. At the time, it appeared that could bode well for the Spartans — who are among his four finalists with Michigan, Penn State and Kentucky. Now, it’s even more interesting to see so many crystal ball predictions flip in such a short amount of time.

Benny is ranked as the No. 15 defensive tackle in the 2021 class, and No. 6 overall prospect in the state of Michigan. Should MSU land Benny, this would be the first major in-state recruit for Mel Tucker and his staff.

Keep an eye out on this one — it will be interesting to see if the Spartans can in fact land this top recruit or if these crystal ball predictions are just smoke.

4-star Oak Park OL/DL Rayshaun Benny lists MSU in top 4, plans to commit ‘soon’

Rayshaun Benny, a four-star offensive and defensive lineman from Oak Park, Mich., announced on Saturday he’ll be committing “soon” and Michigan State is still in the running to land this highly-touted prospect.

Benny took to Twitter on Saturday afternoon to reveal Michigan State, Penn State, Kentucky and Michigan are the four programs that cracked his finalists’ list, and hinted at his verbal commitment coming in the near future.

Benny, who is listed at 6-foot-5 and 275 pounds, is ranked as the No. 6 overall prospect in the state of Michigan and  No. 188 nationally in the class of 2021, according to 247Sports. He is also ranked as the No. 14 defensive tackle by the recruiting service.

Allen Trieu, a national recruiting analyst for 247 Sports, is really high on Benny and considers him not only a player who will make an impact in college but forecasts a career in the NFL as well.

“Build wise, he looks like an inside-outside swing guy on the hoof. Has played both sides of the ball in high school and plays with tenacity and has good functional strength already. Runs his feet on contact and plays with good balance. Has good feet and athleticism in pass protection but has to get stronger in his punch and improve hand technique. Can play guard or right tackle in college. Natural athleticism and intangibles are that of a multi-year Power 5 starter and will have an opportunity to play on Sunday,” Trieu writes of Benny on his 247Sports’ profile.

According to 247Sports, Benny has been on four unofficial visits to Michigan State since the Spartans offered him in May of 2019. Benny has offers from numerous power five programs across the country, and previously cut his list to eight schools in July. Arkansas, Arizona State, LSU and Tennessee were the four schools removed from his latest finalists list released on Saturday

247Sports has Benny leaning towards Michigan, with all six of their crystal ball predictions as the Wolverines landing him.

Check out Benny’s highlights from his junior season at Oak Park High below:

Michigan 4-star DL target Rayshaun Benny not letting coronavirus rush commitment

Oak Park (Mich.) 2021 four-star defensive lineman Rayshaun Benny, one of Michigan’s top targets, isn’t letting COVID-19 rush his decision.

[jwplayer Q7mRUYVF]

Oak Park (Mich.) 2021 four-star defensive lineman Rayshaun Benny had big plans lined up for this spring.

Plans that have since been put on hold.

Visiting Iowa, Georgia, Tennessee, Clemson, Ohio State and Auburn were on his to-do list before the novel coronavirus forced the NCAA to halt in-person recruiting.

“These visits were going to help me make my decision,” Benny told WolverinesWire. “Now I have to find the time to get these visits in.”

Many prospects in Benny’s recruiting class, like Cass Tech’s Kalen and Kobe King, have committed earlier than originally planned due to fear that their spot on a specific college roster would be taken by someone else.

But Benny isn’t going to let COVID-19 stand in his way of making a thorough decision. He will stay patient, wait until he’s allowed to visit all the schools he needs to check out and, eventually, make a choice.

“I’m not going to let it rush me,” he said. “I’ll take my time. That’s very important. I don’t want to commit and decommit. I want to commit once.”

[lawrence-related id=23624,23423,23336]

Just because Benny can’t take in-person visits doesn’t mean he’s not busy. His phone call log is filled with names of coaches from across the country.

The 6-foot-5, 275-pound lineman said, in an unconventional way, the virus has made his life more hectic than he expected.

“Before, I had visits planned, but I’ve had to cut everything out because I can’t go anywhere,” Benny said. “But it became busy since everyone is inside their homes, so they’ve all got time to talk. My line has just been ringing.”

One of those schools is Michigan, a program in hot pursuit of Benny’s services on the defensive line. He talks to the coaching staff, primarily defensive line coach Shaun Nua, at least four times each week.

Benny also engages with head coach Jim Harbaugh, tight ends coach Sherrone Moore and director of recruiting Matt Dudek.

“I appreciate it,” he said. “That’s my hometown. If that’s the right fit and where the love is, then that’s where I’m going to go.”

Besides Michigan, the other teams most in contact with Benny include Iowa, Arkansas, Penn State, Ohio State, Tennessee, USC and Notre Dame. He has offers from 40 schools.

Since Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker was hired in February, the Spartans have increased their efforts in Benny’s recruitment. He hears plenty from defensive line coach Ron Burton and offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic as well as maintaining a “good relationship” with Tucker.

“I like the new coaching staff,” Benny said. “I went up there and met everyone when we played Ohio State. I liked the energy and the vibe. You could tell it’s a new era vs. the Dantonio era.”

Benny’s teammate, three-star running back Davion Primm, was the first to join MSU’s 2021 class, doing so on March 7. Primm is actively recruiting his close friend to join him.

“I’ll get him first and go from there,” Primm said. “We’re very close, one of my best friends since my first day of practice.”

While most recruiting websites have Benny listed as an offensive tackle, U-M and MSU view him as a defensive tackle. Both schools believe he can play as early as his true freshman season.

“The fact that I’ve got a motor,” Benny said. “Nobody goes harder than me. Through everything, I just fight. What I want, I get. I’m a hard worker, and that’s the biggest thing. Giving it my all every play.”

Benny is ranked No. 127 in the nation, No. 16 at offensive tackle and No. 6 in Michigan, per the 247Sports composite.

10 Michigan football recruiting targets to watch in 2021

247Sports’ Steve Lorenz joined WolverinesWire and the Locked On Wolverines podcast to share who Michigan’s going after the hardest in 2021.

[jwplayer fdhV1vo6-XNcErKyb]

As of yet, Michigan has just two commits in the 2021 class in offensive tackle Giovanni El-Hadi and quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

But, as we’ve seen, recruiting heats up in a hurry, and there are several prospects the Wolverines are in on.

On Wednesday, we welcomed 247Sports’ Steve Lorenz to the Locked On Wolverines podcast to discuss who are 10 recruits that Michigan fans should have their eye on, and while he gave us more than 10, as well as a thorough breakdown of where maize and blue targets fared in the newly-released 247Sports 2021 rankings that came out on Wednesday, he shared some excellent insight as to where things stand with several of the Wolverines’ top targets.

In no particular order, we start with a long-coveted in-state product.

Rocco Spindler

2021 Clarkston (MI) OL/DE Rocco Spindler
Hometown Clarkston (MI)
Height 6-foot-4.5
Weight 295-pounds
Position  OL/DL
247Sports ranking 4-star, 47 overall

Lorenz’s take:

“Projects as an offensive lineman. Could also play the defensive line at the next level.

“Again, I expect Michigan to recruit him as an offensive lineman, but I think he’s also a guy, depending on how they feel with other offensive linemen, he could also play on the defensive side.

“I think Michigan’s battling, really kind of the typical type of schools in this situation — Notre Dame, Ohio State. I think Penn State, a little bit, but more Notre Dame and Ohio State. A guy that Michigan quarterback commitment J.J. McCarthy has worked really hard on, and the staff obviously has worked very hard as well.”

Michigan remains ‘heavy’ in Oak Park 4-star OT Rayshaun Benny’s recruitment

Michigan football is one school in the dogfight for Oak Park High School four-star offensive tackle Rayshaun Benny.

[jwplayer 8xPQIEAt-XNcErKyb]

Rayshaun Benny knows his college decision won’t be easy.

The Oak Park (Mich.) 2021 four-star offensive tackle has offers from 33 programs. Michigan is one school in the dogfight for the nation’s 175th-best prospect.

Benny was at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor for the basketball game between No. 5 Michigan and No. 10 Oregon. The football prospect watched closely as the Wolverines were knocked off, 71-70, in overtime.

But what mattered most to Benny was his opportunity to extend his relationship with the coaching staff.

“My connection with Michigan is good,” Benny said to WolverinesWire. “We are always in contact.”

Along with his trip to Michigan, Benny has recently checked out Kentucky (Nov. 9) and Michigan State (Nov. 30). He most recently went to see the Wolverines for the Aug. 31 season-opening 40-21 victory over Middle Tennessee State.

[lawrence-related id=18164,15811,15801,15793]

Before Benny is willing to make a college decision, he wants to visit Ohio State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Louisville.

Regardless of how those visits go, Michigan has already secured its spot for the 6-foot-5, 275-pound in-state lineman.

“Michigan is toward the top of my list,” Benny said. “It seems like they would be in it at the end. They are just heavy in my recruitment with staying in touch with me.”

Other schools near the top are Ohio State, Penn State, Kentucky, Nebraska, Louisville, Tennessee, Colorado and a few others.

Benny said he will “definitely” commit during his senior year.

The 2021 prospect is ranked No. 175 in the nation, No. 24 at offensive tackle and No. 6 in the state, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Only Belleville four-star defensive tackle Damon Payne, Clarkston four-star offensive tackle Rocco Spindler, West Bloomfield four-star running back Donovan Edwards, Clarkston four-star offensive tackle Garrett Dellinger and Stevenson four-star offensive tackle Giovanni El-Hadi (Michigan commit) are ranked higher than Benny in The Mitten State.

Michigan does not have any players from Oak Park on its roster.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. —  It certainly wasn’t the biggest recruiting weekend for Michigan football, but still, the Wolverines gridiron contingent had a solid outing taking in the maize and blue on the hardwood.

With many of the coaches out of town recruiting, that didn’t mean that there couldn’t be a bevy of commits and prospects to come to town, especially with a top ten matchup between the No. 5 basketball team and No. 10 Oregon.

WolverinesWire was on the baseline to capture the commits, recruits and staff members who were at Crisler Center to take in the game.
