Examining the No. 3 WR role in Kevin Stefanski’s offense

Examining the No. 3 WR role in Kevin Stefanski’s offense he brings from Minnesota

The Cleveland Browns are in great shape with the top WR duo of Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr., two Pro Bowl standouts. While they’re coming off recent surgeries, the duo has the potential to be the best 1-2 punch in the NFL.

After that, the depth chart drops off dramatically at wide receiver. Rashard Higgins thrived in the role in 2018 but fell out of favor in 2019. Young Damion Ratley and rookie Donovan Peoples-Jones could also fill the role. But in the grand scheme of the Browns new offense under head coach Kevin Stefanski, it’s not a big role.

Simply put, expect the No. 3 wide receiver role in Cleveland in 2020 to be no higher than 6th in passing targets for the Browns, based on coach Stefanski’s history.

The 2017 season was the first year where Minnesota ran the offense Stefanski is expected to implement in Cleveland. Pat Shurmur took over full-time as the team’s offensive coordinator after succeeding Norv Turner halfway through the 2016 season, and the switch away from the importance of depth at wide receiver was instantaneous.

In 2017, Laquon Treadwell was the Vikings’ No. 3 wideout. He got exactly 35 targets while playing all 16 games, catching 20 for 200 yards. Jarius Wright caught 18 of his 25 targets as the No. 4 wideout.

The next season saw more targets for Treadwell as the No. 3. Adam Theilen got 153, Stefon Diggs saw 149, TE Kyle Rudolph got 82 and then came Treadwell at 53. RB Dalvin Cook was on pace to get many more than Treadwell with 49 targets in just 11 games, too.

Stefanski had just one season as Minnesota’s offensive coordinator. His impact on the targets for the No. 3 WR was stark. After Diggs and Theilen, the next WR on the Vikings target list was 7th-round rookie Olabisi Johnson. He had 31 receptions on 45 targets with a low 9.5 yards per reception.

Bisi Johnson’s receiving chart from Pro Football Focus is pretty typical for how a No. 3 receiver gets used in what we expect of a Stefanski offense:

Johnson ranked sixth on the Vikings in targets, behind Diggs, RB Dalvin Cook, Theilen and TE Irv Smith. It gets a bit of an asterisk as well with Theilen missing six full games and parts of two others with injuries that afforded Johnson more looks. Almost a third of Johnson’s targets came in his first two games (Weeks 10 and 11) filling in for the injured Theilen as the No. 2 wideout. In games where he was the third receiver, he topped four targets just once, the Week 7 win over the Lions where Theilen left in the first quarter with an injury.

The Browns have two very good receiving tight ends in Austin Hooper and David Njoku, both of whom have enough versatility to play as a de facto 3rd wideout in the formation. Kareem Hunt proved a fantastic receiving weapon out of the backfield in 2019, and he’s recently been sitting in on the WR positional Zoom meetings. Nick Chubb isn’t known for his hands, but he’s hauled in 56 passes in two seasons, too.

While it’s overkill to say that the No. 3 wideout isn’t important for the Browns, it’s certainly not a meaty role. If Landry and Beckham stay healthy, don’t expect more than about 40 targets or 200 yards from Higgins or whoever wins the spot.

Browns officially re-sign WR Rashard Higgins, waive DT Brandin Bryant

Browns officially re-sign WR Rashard Higgins, waive DT Brandin Bryant

The Browns made it official on Friday morning, re-signing wide receiver Rashard Higgins to a one-year deal. The move was reported over a week ago but finally completed after accommodations for the travel and personal contact restrictions currently in place for the coronavirus pandemic.

Higgins rejoins the Browns for a fifth season with the hopes that it will fare better than his fourth year in Cleveland. Higgins battled injuries and ex-coach Freddie Kitchens’ doghouse in a disappointing 2019 campaign that saw “Hollywood” catch just four passes in 10 games. It was a steep departure from a very promising 2018 when Higgins clicked with QB Baker Mayfield and caught 39 passes for 572 yards and four TDs.

In order to make room for Higgins on the roster, the Browns waived defensive tackle Brandin Bryant. The journeyman tackle played four games in 2019 after bouncing up and down from the practice squad. Cleveland was Bryant’s fourth NFL team in as many years and the only place where he earned any playing time.

Rashard Higgins ‘couldn’t give it up that easy’ with his Browns career

Rashard Higgins ‘couldn’t give it up that easy’ with his Browns career

Rashard Higgins was a bright light in Baker Mayfield’s rookie season in 2018. “Hollywood” caught 39 passes for 572 yards and four TDs while consistently serving as Mayfield’s preferred target on critical downs.

The light dimmed and nearly blacked out in 2019. Higgins battled an injury and a trip to rookie coach Freddie Kitchens’ bad side. He caught just four passes in 10 games and was benched late in the year despite the team struggling.

He was a free agent after the season, but Higgins opted to return to Cleveland after being on the open market for more than a month. And he’s very happy and excited to be back with Mayfield and with the Browns.

“I want to see us prevail,’’ Higgins told cleveland.com. “I want to see us win, so I couldn’t give it up that easy. I’m not in it for the money, I’m in it for the glory. I’d rather just win with a team that I’ve been with.’’

Higgins took an optimistic route in dealing with the adversity under fired coach Kitchens.

“Everything didn’t pan out like we wanted it to last year, but there’s a lot of stuff that we can’t control and we’re just going to go control what we can and move forward,’’ he said later in the interview. “We’re just going to do us and not look back.’’

As for his chemistry with Mayfield, that has not gone away.

“It’s a trust factor,’’ Higgins said. “I trust him, he trusts me. I believe in him, he believes in me.’’

Higgins projects as the No. 3 receiver behind Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr., with competition from sixth-round rookie Donovan Peoples-Jones. He seems confidently ready for a rebound season.

Rashard Higgins changes his jersey number to 82

Rashard Higgins changes his jersey number to 82

Rashard Higgins is back in Cleveland, but the popular Browns receiver will have a new look when the team returns to the field later this year. Higgins revealed on his social media he will now wear No. 82.

While nothing has been made official, it is expected tight end Austin Hooper will don Higgins’ old No. 81 jersey. Hooper signed as a free agent while Higgins was off the team, and he wore 81 with the Atlanta Falcons.

Wide receiver J’Mon Moore wore 82 last season. Most Browns fans associate that jersey with iconic tight end Ozzie Newsome, who rocked the No. 82 in his Hall-of-Fame career with Cleveland.

Report: Browns will re-sign WR Rashard Higgins to 1-year deal

Hollywood is back for a fifth season in Cleveland

One of the great offseason Cleveland debates is finally settled. The Browns will indeed bring back wide receiver Rashard Higgins for the 2020 season, per a report from Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com.

Higgins was a free agent after the Browns initially showed little interest in bringing him back for another season. A prime contributor in Baker Mayfield’s rookie season in 2018 (39 catches, 572 yards, 4 TDs), Higgins fell off dramatically in 2019 due to injuries and lack of a defined role in the new offense. In 10 games he had just four receptions on 11 total targets and was a healthy scratch at points in the season.

“Hollywood” gets a chance to redeem himself in 2020 under new head coach Kevin Stefanski. The terms of the deal are not yet available but reports indicate it is a one-year contract with the Browns. Higgins, 25, has spent his entire four-year career in Cleveland.

He projects to compete for the No. 3 WR spot with 6th-round rookie Donovan Peoples-Jones and holdovers Damion Ratley, KhaDarel Hodge and Taywan Taylor.

Remaining April free agents left for Bills to consider

Could there be any players still available that could interest the Bills? There certainly are.

Most attention has turned to the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft at the end of April. But that doesn’t mean the free agent market has closed.

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane recently spoke to reporters and admitted much of his attention is now on rookies. However, he also said that the young prospects don’t have his full attention. He’ll be sure to keep an eye on the open market, too.

Could there be any players still available that could interest the Bills? There certainly are.

Here are 10 players still on the open market for the Bills to consider:

RB Devonta Freeman

Age: 28

This connection between the Bills and Devonta Freeman have been made since before he was even cut by the Falcons this offseason.

Freeman could provide a complement to Devin Singeltary as a pass-catching option. He caught 59 catches in 2019 with the Falcons and 257 in his career, including 73 in the 2015 season. But by most accounts, Freeman took a step back last season. He only averaged 3.6 yards per carry last year, a career-low, but overall, Freeman is at 4.2 yards per carry for his career.

Still, Freeman could be a low-cost option to pair up with Singletary in Buffalo’s backfield. However, he’s not an overly-large player that would mix well with Singletary’s smaller, shifty game with the Bills and he’s not much of a special teams guy like TJ Yeldon would be. Overall as a back, Freeman has certainly had more success than Yeldon in his career, though.

7 low-cost free agents Colts could target

There are still some solid low-cost options on the market.

The Indianapolis Colts spent freely during the initial free agency period and while that only came in the form of two players essentially, they still have enough salary-cap space to work another deal or two on the lower levels.

Staring at roughly $28 million in salary-cap space, the Colts have enough to target some bargain free agents and cheaper options on the market. None are without their issues—whether it be age, injury or an overall lack of production.

Some of these aren’t bottom-of-the-barrel cheap but relative to their positional market, the Colts would be fine targeting them. Given the depth still needed on both sides of the ball, some moves still need to be made.

Here are seven low-cost free agents remaining for the Colts to target:

Rashard Higgins | WR | Age: 25

Higgins got lost in the mix with the Browns during the 2019 in what turned out to be an utter circus in Cleveland. From Freddie Kitchens running the offense into the ground to Baker Mayfield regressing at an alarming rate, there wasn’t much for Higgins to work with coming off of his best season since entering the league.

The Colts are most likely going to target the wide receiver position early in the 2020 NFL draft. It’s a must. But adding Higgins would give them a depth piece with experience and one that offers solid WR2 upside. He wins with length would be a versatile piece in Frank Reich’s offense.

Higgins shouldn’t be expensive at all. Breshad Perriman was in the tier above him and got $8 million on a one-year deal. The Colts could easily pull off a deal worth $5 million for Higgins.

Report: Bills express interest in WR Rashard Higgins

According to NYUP.com, the Bills have expressed interested in the former Browns wideout.

The Buffalo Bills added the big fish receiver they so desperately needed via trade in Stefon Diggs. But the organization appears to be concerned about their depth there, too.

According to NYUP.com, the Bills have expressed interested in the former Browns wideout.

In 2018, Higgins flashed some promise, when he had 39 receptions for 572 yards and four scores. But last season, perhaps because of an MCL sprain Higgins was held to only four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown in 10 games. As the report suggests, that score came against the Bills. Higgins also previously had an ACL injury.

In 54 career games, Higgins has 76 catches for 1,016 yards and seven scores. He was a fifth-round pick of the Browns in 2016, and despite his shortcomings, Cleveland.com previously reported that the Browns would be interested in bringing him back for “the right price.”

But the Bills will likely want him for the same standard. The 2020 receiver draft class is speculated to be amongst the deepest wideout classes in years, so the Bills could find value on a receiver with a later draft pick.

7 remaining free agents the Colts could target

Who is still available for the Colts?

The first day of the legal tampering period has come and gone and it was a wild one. It was so wild that the Indianapolis Colts even made an unprecedented move, trading a first-round pick for defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.

Now equipped with a shiny new three-technique, the Colts still have some work to do in the market. Could they bring in a quarterback like Philip Rivers? Will they add depth to the wide receiver room? The moves seem unknown at this point, especially given how shocking it was that Chris Ballard made such a big trade on the first day of free agency.

[lawrence-related id=40553]

Regardless, there are still options on the market for the Colts to consider. Here are seven remaining free agents for Indy:

Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

Philip Rivers | QB | Age: 38

Whether we like it or not, Rivers and the Colts are going to be connected until he finds a new team—wherever that may be. The two sides have already been in contact since the legal tampering period opened on Monday and it seems the situation is beginning to take life.

After the trade for Buckner, Rivers would cost nearly half of the Colts’ remaining salary cap space, which currently sits at roughly $46 million. That’s still a strong number but one that Ballard is likely feeling a bit cautious with when considering the draft pool money and the rollover money for 2021.

Still, Rivers is likely viewed as the free agent with the highest chance of joining the Colts.
