Da’Shawn Hand tabbed as the Lions breakout player by PFF

Hand has played very well when he’s been able to stay on the field

Lions fans have seen glimpses of how good defensive end Da’Shawn Hand can be in his first two seasons in Detroit. Now it’s time for Hand to stay on the field, step up and unleash his strong play more consistently.

The analysts at Pro Football Focus believe Hand can do it. PFF tabbed Hand as the Lions’ breakout player. In saying Hand could break into “perhaps top-10 status” at his position, the arrow is clearly pointing up.

Staying on the field will be critical. Hand has missed 16 of the 32 games in his two NFL seasons, playing in just three in 2019. He thrived as a rookie, and PFF believes that was a precursor of things to come,

He managed to get in 455 snaps on the year and produced a great 85.2 PFF grade (15th-best at the position), and he was also one of eight interior defensive linemen to produce 75.0-plus grades both against the run and as a pass-rusher.

Hand will be given every opportunity by the Lions to make an impact as a pass rusher along the front. His ability to play inside our outside is a major asset for coach Matt Patricia’s multiple looks.

Matthew Stafford, Kenny Golladay make it onto ESPN’s top 100 players

The Lions get two players on the predicted top 100 list from ESPN

ESPN has revealed its prediction for the top 100 players of the upcoming 2020 NFL season. Only two Detroit Lions made the cut: Matthew Stafford and Kenny Golladay.

Stafford is the top Lion, as expected. The longtime franchise QB checks in at No. 52 overall. His outstanding first eight games of 2019, before he injured his back for the second season in a row, and the promise of playing in Darrell Bevell’s offense for another year have the analysts at ESPN giddy over Stafford’s potential. As Mike Rothstein notes,

Darrell Bevell’s offense, which allows Stafford to use his arm strength for downfield throws, and Stafford’s better decision-making, honed from his years with Jim Caldwell, set the veteran QB up perfectly for a big year.

One of Stafford’s primary targets, Golladay makes an appearance at No. 76 overall. The NFL’s reigning TD receptions leader is looking to build upon a year where he proved himself one of the league’s preeminent downfield weapons,

Thirty-four percent of Golladay’s receptions gained 20-plus yards in 2019, the best rate among 71 players who recorded 50-plus catches.

A full season with Stafford at the helm in Bevell’s offense could launch Golladay well above the 76th ranking prediction here.

Four teams, the Jets, Football Team, Dolphins and Bengals, did not land a single player on the top 100 list.

PFF predicts the Lions rookie class will have the highest positive impact of any team

PFF loves what the Lions did in the 2020 NFL Draft

Pro Football Focus has not hidden its admiration for the Detroit Lions draft class of 2020. Now PFF has once again predicted very good things for Jeff Okudah, D’Andre Swift, Jonah Jackson and rest of Bob Quinn’s 2020 NFL Draft haul.

In its “10 bold predictions for NFL rookies” article, the tenth and final one is a love note to the Lions. PFF predicts the Detroit rookie class to produce the highest Wins Above Replacement value, or WAR, of any team’s freshman class. The WAR prediction excludes quarterbacks, who have an inordinate impact upon the figure.

This is another one that’s not too bold, as the Lions had a top-three pick and a ton of draft capital. Still, they turned it into a few impact players. They grabbed the fourth, 28th, 40th and 74th overall players on the PFF Big Board with their first four picks, and all look slated to start early on. If the Lions really are going to turn it around and take the NFC North in 2020, it’s going to come on the back of a strong rookie class.

It’s another optimistic look from PFF at a brightening future in Detroit.

Browns rank 20th in ESPN’s preseason power poll

The Browns are 3rd in the AFC North rankings

The latest of the NFL preseason power polls comes courtesy of ESPN. It took a little scrolling down to find the Cleveland Browns in ESPN’s list. Kevin Stefanski’s team checks in at No. 20 of 32.

Sandwiched between the Arizona Cardinals and the Las Vegas Raiders, the Browns are a distant third amongst AFC North teams. Baltimore is firmly planted at No. 2 and the Pittsburgh Steelers are No. 13. Cincinnati is up to No. 30 from the bottom ranking pre-draft.

In addition to the rankings, each ESPN team writer listed the person on the team with the hottest seat. As expected, QB Baker Mayfield earned the nod from Jake Trotter. Mayfield is the only realistic option for that honor in Cleveland in 2020.

USA TODAY projects the Browns to finish 9-7

USA TODAY football analyst Nate Davis projects the Browns to finish 9-7 in 2020

We’re getting ever so close to the 2020 NFL season. As we trudge through what would normally be the preseason, it’s time for the rite of passage that is season forecasting for final records.

One of the latest comes courtesy of USA TODAY and analysts Nate Davis. HIs projection forecasts the Browns to improve to 9-7 and finish third in the difficult AFC North. It’s an uptick over last season’s disappointing 6-10 effort that resulted in yet another regime change in Cleveland.

Davis sees the coaching change as a positive, even if it might be a little rocky in this odd Year 1,

Newly motivated QB Baker Mayfield seems tailor-made for rookie coach Kevin Stefanski’s system … even if they won’t have much time to get on the same page of the playbook. Still, this club’s copious talent has to eventually prevail … right?

The full season forecast for all 32 NFL teams, with the rival Ravens winning the AFC but losing to the Saints in the Super Bowl.

USA TODAY projects the Lions to finish 7-9 in 2020

The projection elevates the Lions out of the NFC North basement and more than doubles the 2019 win total

The 2020 NFL season predictions are starting to flow out. One of the notable early forecasts comes courtesy of USA TODAY and analyst Nate Davis.

Davis sees the Lions moving up in the NFC North and more than doubling the 2019 win total. The 7-9 projection lifts the Lions out of the NFC North basement, above the Chicago Bears but below the Packers and Vikings, respectively. He doesn’t see any team in the division winning more than nine games.

The close-but-no-cigar losses from 2019 should turn around, Davis believes,

They gave the opposition, including eventual champion Kansas City, all it could handle in the first half of 2019. Then QB Matthew Stafford went down with a back injury. So let’s not take this team lightly – especially if rookies like CB Jeff Okudah and RB D’Andre Swift make smooth professional transitions while WR Kenny Golladay and DE Trey Flowers continue to quietly flourish.

There’s a “but”, of course, and it deals with embattled head coach Matt Patricia and the tough schedule that sees the team on the road a lot in the early season.

Football Outsiders ranks the Lions as most likely team to go from worst-to-first

The fine print isn’t so bullish on the Lions as it is more of a downer on the whole division

In what’s becoming an annual tradition, the analysts at Football Outsiders have tabbed the Detroit Lions as the most likely NFL team to pull off the vaunted worst-to-first improvement in 2020. Via ESPN, Football Outsiders ranks the Lions No. 1 on the list.

Before you get too excited and start hanging playoff banners in your Lions-themed living room, even the FO analysts themselves don’t exactly sound too confident in their pick here. They lead off the ESPN piece by noting the Lions were also their pick for this a year ago, when Detroit stumbled to 3-12-1. They also note that no team pulled off the impressive worst-to-first in 2019.

The further explanation is even more of a cold shower, not just on Detroit but the entire NFC North,

This doesn’t mean we’re projecting a great season from the Lions. Our mean projection for the Lions has them as a very average team. We’re high on the Lions because our mean projections have every team in the NFC North as a very average team. All four teams win the division somewhere between 23% and 27% of our simulations.

Basically, Detroit’s projected improvement on defense and a full 16-game season from Matthew Stafford close the gap with the Vikings, Bears and Packers, all of whom Football Outsiders project to be worse than they were a year ago. Maybe being the NFC North team that did the least amount of self-inflicted roster damage in the offseason is the key for the Lions.

Examining the No. 3 WR role in Kevin Stefanski’s offense

Examining the No. 3 WR role in Kevin Stefanski’s offense he brings from Minnesota

The Cleveland Browns are in great shape with the top WR duo of Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr., two Pro Bowl standouts. While they’re coming off recent surgeries, the duo has the potential to be the best 1-2 punch in the NFL.

After that, the depth chart drops off dramatically at wide receiver. Rashard Higgins thrived in the role in 2018 but fell out of favor in 2019. Young Damion Ratley and rookie Donovan Peoples-Jones could also fill the role. But in the grand scheme of the Browns new offense under head coach Kevin Stefanski, it’s not a big role.

Simply put, expect the No. 3 wide receiver role in Cleveland in 2020 to be no higher than 6th in passing targets for the Browns, based on coach Stefanski’s history.

The 2017 season was the first year where Minnesota ran the offense Stefanski is expected to implement in Cleveland. Pat Shurmur took over full-time as the team’s offensive coordinator after succeeding Norv Turner halfway through the 2016 season, and the switch away from the importance of depth at wide receiver was instantaneous.

In 2017, Laquon Treadwell was the Vikings’ No. 3 wideout. He got exactly 35 targets while playing all 16 games, catching 20 for 200 yards. Jarius Wright caught 18 of his 25 targets as the No. 4 wideout.

The next season saw more targets for Treadwell as the No. 3. Adam Theilen got 153, Stefon Diggs saw 149, TE Kyle Rudolph got 82 and then came Treadwell at 53. RB Dalvin Cook was on pace to get many more than Treadwell with 49 targets in just 11 games, too.

Stefanski had just one season as Minnesota’s offensive coordinator. His impact on the targets for the No. 3 WR was stark. After Diggs and Theilen, the next WR on the Vikings target list was 7th-round rookie Olabisi Johnson. He had 31 receptions on 45 targets with a low 9.5 yards per reception.

Bisi Johnson’s receiving chart from Pro Football Focus is pretty typical for how a No. 3 receiver gets used in what we expect of a Stefanski offense:

Johnson ranked sixth on the Vikings in targets, behind Diggs, RB Dalvin Cook, Theilen and TE Irv Smith. It gets a bit of an asterisk as well with Theilen missing six full games and parts of two others with injuries that afforded Johnson more looks. Almost a third of Johnson’s targets came in his first two games (Weeks 10 and 11) filling in for the injured Theilen as the No. 2 wideout. In games where he was the third receiver, he topped four targets just once, the Week 7 win over the Lions where Theilen left in the first quarter with an injury.

The Browns have two very good receiving tight ends in Austin Hooper and David Njoku, both of whom have enough versatility to play as a de facto 3rd wideout in the formation. Kareem Hunt proved a fantastic receiving weapon out of the backfield in 2019, and he’s recently been sitting in on the WR positional Zoom meetings. Nick Chubb isn’t known for his hands, but he’s hauled in 56 passes in two seasons, too.

While it’s overkill to say that the No. 3 wideout isn’t important for the Browns, it’s certainly not a meaty role. If Landry and Beckham stay healthy, don’t expect more than about 40 targets or 200 yards from Higgins or whoever wins the spot.

Dr. Anthony Fauci cautions the NFL season ‘may not happen’ due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Dr. Anthony Fauci cautions the NFL season ‘may not happen’ due to the COVID-19 pandemic

While other professional sports leagues, including the NBA and MLS, are moving forward operating in a “bubble” environment for the players, coaches, staffers and officials, the NFL is going its own way. So far, the NFL is sticking firm with playing games in normal stadiums on a normal travel schedule with nods to local regulations surrounding COVID-19.

Dr .Anthony Fauci, the recognizable director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, thinks the NFL needs to be more like the other sports. Fauci spoke about the NFL’s plan on CNN and frowned on the concept of the players not being in an isolated bubble situation.

“Unless players are essentially in a bubble — insulated from the community and they are tested nearly every day — it would be very hard to see how football is able to be played this fall,” Fauci said.

Fauci also believes that any second wave of infections during the NFL’s season would be a death knell for the 2020 season.

“If there is a second wave, which is certainly a possibility and which would be complicated by the predictable flu season, football may not happen this year,” Fauci said.

The NFL and NFLPA continue to work out the logistics and planning for the upcoming season. Nothing is yet set in stone. Fauci’s admonition is a sign that it might require more flexibility and be more of a struggle than the NFL would like it to be.
