Raphael Pessoa accepts 2-year suspension for prohibited substance use, evasion of collection

The UFC heavyweight was suspended for the same prohibited substance in 2020.

Four positive drug tests and two testing evasions have led to the second career drug-testing sanction of UFC heavyweight [autotag]Raphael Pessoa[/autotag].

On Monday, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency announced Pessoa (10-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) has been suspended for two years as a result of four separate positive tests for hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) and its metabolites chlorothiazide and 4-amino-6-chloro-1,3-benzenedisulfonamide (ACB). The positives stemmed from out-of-competition urine samples collected Feb. 9, Feb. 15, Feb. 16 and March 4.

HCTZ is defined by USADA as “a specified substance in the class of Diuretics and Masking Agents and is prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy and UFC Prohibited List.”

Since Pessoa was not notified of the first positive test until after the third positive test was collected, the positives are treated as a single violation.

Additionally, Pessoa evaded two USADA tests on Jan. 25 and Jan. 28 – another violation of drug-testing protocol. Like the positives, Pessoa was not notified of the first evasion violation until he evaded a second time – so the evasions are treated as a single offense.

“Evading sample collection, or refusing or failing to submit to sample collection, without compelling justification is a doping violation under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy,” according to USADA.

Pessoa, 32, will be eligible to compete Feb. 9, 2023 – two years retroactive to his first positive test in that stretch.

The suspension is not Pessoa’s first for HCTZ. In November 2020, Pessoa was suspended one year retroactive to a March 2020 positive test.

Pessoa has appeared three times in the UFC. His lone UFC victory over Jeff Hughes is bookended by finish losses against Ciryl Gane and Tanner Boser. He most recently competed in July.

UFC’s Raphael Pessoa accepts 1-year USADA ban stemming from March test after fighting in July

UFC heavyweoght Raphael Pessoa will have to wait until the spring of 2021 for a return to the octagon.

UFC heavyweoght [autotag]Raphael Pessoa[/autotag] will have to wait until the spring of 2021 for a return to the octagon.

Pessoa accepted a one-year suspension from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency after violating the UFC’s anti-doping policy. USADA announced the news Monday afternoon.

Pessoa (10-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) tested positive for banned substance hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) and its metabolites chlorothiazide and 4-amino-6-chloro-1,3-benzenedisulfonamide (ACB) in a sample collected in an out-of-competition test on March 4.

[lawrence-related id=567714,560679]

Pessoa’s suspension is retroactive from the date the positive sample was collected, so he’ll be eligible to return on March 4, 2021. The Brazilian last fought July 26, five months after the positive sample was collected, losing to Tanner Boser via second-round TKO. USADA said that the reporting of the sample was delayed by laboratory closures caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Normally, if a test sample comes back negative, fighters are pulled from their scheduled bouts and given a provisional suspension until the case is resolved.

“Fight Island” is real, and now the four cards that will take place there are real, as well.

UFC president Dana White today announced the complete lineup for the four cards that will take place next month in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The unique setup has been necessitated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has made it difficult to get international fighters into the U.S. to compete.

“I think this is going to be a really unique experience, not just for the fighters, but for us,” UFC president Dana White said during the announcement. “It’s going to be cool. It’s going to be something different. It’s never been done before, and however long this thing goes on, and however long it’s hard to get people in from other countries, we will have these fights at ‘Fight Island’ – Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.”

Heavyweights are headed to “Fight Island.”

[autotag]Justin Tafa[/autotag] and [autotag]Raphael Pessoa[/autotag] will fight as part of the UFC’s upcoming event on July 25 on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi – also known as “Fight Island.” The event will be the fourth of four cards the promotion is holding in 14 days at the same location.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie on Thursday following an initial report from MMA DNA. The person asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Pessoa (10-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) also confirmed the bout on his Instagram page Thursday.

Australia’s Tafa (4-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) has split two UFC appearances. After being knocked out in his promotional debut in his home country at UFC 243 in October, Tafa was on the opposite side of the equation in his second UFC bout. At UFC 247, Tafa finished Texas’ Juan Adams with strikes in Round 1.

Pessoa, too, was finished in his UFC debut. After the submission loss to Ciryl Gane, Pessoa rebounded at UFC on ESPN+ 20 in October, defeating former LFA heavyweight champion Jeff Hughes by unanimous decision.

With the addition, the July 25 lineup includes:

  • Darren Till vs. Robert Whittaker
  • Alexander Gustafsson vs. Fabricio Werdum
  • Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Mauricio Rua
  • Bethe Correia vs. Pannie Kianzad
