NAC suspends Ryan Benoit for 9 months after testing positive for sleep apnea drug

The positive drug test stems from his July 31 UFC fight.

Former UFC fighter [autotag]Ryan Benoit[/autotag] was suspended Wednesday for a positive drug test stemming from his last bout under the promotion’s banner.

The Nevada Athletic Commission suspended Benoit (10-8) nine months retroactive to a positive urine sample collected in connection to his UFC on ESPN 27 unanimous decision loss to Zarrukh Adashev on July 31.

Benoit, 32, was flagged for modafinil, more commonly known as provigil, a commonly prescribed medication for sleep apnea. In addition to his suspension, Benoit faces a total of $3,445.36 in fines and legal fees. He will be eligible to return on April 1, 2022.

Following the defeat to Adashev, Benoit was released from the promotion. The loss was his third in a row and fourth in five fights. A member of the UFC roster from 2013 to 2021, Benoit competed nine times over the span of eight years and compiled a 3-6 record.

UFC parts way with Ryan Benoit, Yancy Medeiros, and others

Four fighters are no longer on the UFC roster.

The UFC has once again trimmed its roster.

Four fighters have parted ways with the promotion after recently losses, MMA Junkie has confirmed through people with knowledge of the situation.

With Dana White’s Contender Series, and the influx of UFC signings that comes with it, right around the corner, it’s possible the promotion is adjusting its numbers in anticipation.

Check out the recent UFC departures below. The roster moves, unless explicitly noted, are not necessarily a “release.” The UFC may have elected not to re-sign certain fighters who were at the end of their contracts.

Ryan Benoit suffered fractured fibular head in UFC on ESPN 28 loss to Zarrukh Adashev

Ryan Benoit had to battle through a fractured leg in a hard-fought loss to Zarrukh Adashev at UFC on ESPN 28 on Saturday.

[autotag]Ryan Benoit[/autotag] had to battle through a fractured leg in a hard-fought loss to [autotag]Zarrukh Adashev[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN 28 on Saturday.

Benoit (10-8 MMA, 3-6 UFC) revealed that he broke his fibular head early on in the fight after taking Adashev’s heavy leg kicks, but he never stopped pressing forward. The flyweight was immediately transported to the hospital following his unanimous decision loss to Adashev (4-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC), and his leg was severely swollen.

“I’d still chase him around if we had more time to scrap! 😡

Broke my fibular head (probably early in the fight if a rocket scientist had to guess).  The hospital was very concerned about  the swelling and possible compartment syndrome so they kept me overnight and they are still monitoring until tmrw.

Thanks everyone for the love and support 🙏👊 #TeamBabyface#TeamBenoit”

The loss marked Benoit’s third straight and fifth out of his past seven appearances, overall. The 31-year-old hasn’t notched a victory since knocking Ashkan Mokhtarian out in November 2017. However, he pushed forward until the very end against Adashev despite the clear damage to his leg.

A timetable for Benoit’s recovery was not revealed.

Ryan Benoit medically cleared for flyweight return; Zarrukh Adashev fight rebooked for UFC on ESPN 27

In May, Ryan Benoit was deemed medically unfit to compete after a shaky weigh-in on the scales.

[autotag]Ryan Benoit[/autotag] will get another crack at flyweight after his most recent fight was canceled on weigh-in day because of a health concern.

Benoit (10-7 MMA, 3-5 UFC) and [autotag]Zarrukh Adashev[/autotag] (3-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC), who were originally paired up for a May 8 battle, have been rebooked to fight July 31 at UFC on ESPN 27, which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The bout will take place at flyweight.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the booking Monday but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Though Adashev made weight for their originally booked matchup, Benoit struggled to stand upright while weighing in. Visibly shaken and staggering, Benoit required assistance from the UFC and commission officials on site. After multiple attempts to register a weight, Benoit weighed 129 pounds. He did not receive medical clearance and the bout was called off before the faceoffs.

In order to receive clearance to attempt another flyweight weight cut, Benoit was required to travel to Las Vegas where the UFC medical staff ran him through a number of tests. He also enrolled in an athlete meal program.

“After a week of testing with a few different specialists at the UFC PI, they gave me the green light to remain at flyweight,” Benoit told MMA Junkie in a statement Monday. “We have a full plan in place to attack this next weight cut and training camp. I’m very confident in the plan we have in place, and I will remain in contact with the PI staff for the coming weeks. Big thanks to ICON Meals for setting me up with a customized diet plan to make the process even easier. I’m excited to get back in the cage and score a KO.”

Benoit, 31, enters the fight on a two-fight losing skid. Meanwhile, Adashev looks to pick up his first UFC win in his third promotional attempt. Adashev was originally expected to Juancamilo Ronderos before Benoit stepped in.

With the addition, the UFC on ESPN 27 lineup includes:

  • Uriah Hall vs. Sean Strickland
  • Bryan Barberena vs. Jason Witt
  • Jinh Yu Frey vs. Ashley Yoder
  • Rafa Garcia vs. Chris Gruetzemacher

Ryan Benoit issues statement after frightening UFC on ESPN 24 weigh-in

“Nobody wins in this situation.”

[autotag]Ryan Benoit[/autotag] thought he would make weight for UFC on ESPN 24 without issue, but his cut was anything but smooth.

Instead, on Friday, Benoit struggled to hold himself upright on the scale as he weighed in for his flyweight fight against Zarrukh Adashev, which was canceled.

On his first attempt, Benoit walked to the scale with his coach then needed him and UFC staff to keep him standing as his body trembled. After he couldn’t register an official mark, Benoit returned several minutes later and again struggled to keep himself upright but this time weighed in three pounds over the limit at 129.

The entire ordeal was a surprise for Benoit, who was transported to a Las Vegas hospital. On Saturday, Benoit issued a statement on the situation.

“Everything was going well and we didn’t think hitting 126 was going to be a problem,” Benoit said on Instagram. “It’s devastating to not compete tonight and earn a paycheck. It’s very unfortunate for my opponent and the promotion. Nobody wins in this situation.”

I would like to thank the Nevada commission, the UFC and the hospital staff for the utmost professionalism and care. Unfortunately I had a situation arise during the conclusion of my weight cut which resulted in my bout being cancelled. Everything was going well and we didn’t think hitting 126 was going to be a problem. It’s devastating to not compete tonight and earn a paycheck. It’s very unfortunate for my opponent and the promotion. Nobody wins in this situation.
Thank you to all my friends, family and fans for their kind words of support – I am humbled and grateful for all your well wishes
🙏🏻❤️👊🏻

UFC on ESPN 24 took place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The fight between Benoit and Adashev was one of three canceled after weigh-ins.

Philipe Lins withdrew from his heavyweight bout with Ben Rothwell after falling ill, while Amanda Ribas vs. Angela Hill was canceled following a positive COVID-19 test for Ribas.
