BetFTW Run It Back Prop: Bet on the opening kickoff of Super Bowl 56

BetFTW’s official Super Bowl bet, “The Run It Back” prop, is now live on Tipico. Come get (what should be) an easy win when the Rams and Bengals kickoff Super Bowl 56

Here at BetFTW, we’ve spent the last week combing through every prop bet imaginable for Super Bowl 56.

From “Will there be a Super Bowl Scorigami” (Yes, -200 at Tipico) to the “LSU Special” (Odell Beckham Jr., Ja’Marr Chase and Joe Burrow all score a touchdown +2600), there was no shortage of options that whet our appetite.

Yet there weren’t any props available for one of the most spectacular and jaw-dropping moments of every Super Bowl: the opening kickoff.

Each year, the opening kickoff dazzles thanks to the flashes from thousands of cameras, a jet-engine like roar from the crowd and the grasp of anxiety when toe meets leather. How could we not want to bet on it?

So, the BetFTW team called up our friends at Tipico to ensure we could bet on the very first football play of Super Bowl 56. The result: The BetFTW Run It Back Special:

Now live on Tipico with boosted odds, we’re betting that the opening kickoff will be returned. Not returned for a touchdown or returned for any specific number of yards, either. As long as the receiving team doesn’t settle for a touchback, we all win.

Tipico boosted the odds from +125 to +150 after our suggestion and we’re all over this one.

Consider a few factors here:

  • The last Super Bowl opening kickoff to go for a touchback was in 2017
  • Super Bowl 56 is being held at SoFi Stadium, where the roof should limit any potential impact from the weather
  • The touchback rate for both kickers (the Rams’ Matt Gay and the Bengals’ Evan McPherson) hovers around 62 percent
  • There’s not a kick returner in the NFL who doesn’t dream of their own Devin Hester moment

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HN_d09Ivd8

For the record, Tipico is offering the opening kickoff returned for a touchdown at +5200.

We’re only concerned about the kickoff not going for a touchback. It’s a straightforward concept: get an easy win right as the game starts to lift our spirits and create some positive vibes.

Besides, what kind of monster roots for a touchback back anyways?

An absurd amount of moneyline bets have already been placed on one Super Bowl 56 team

An astounding percentage of bettors are riding with the Bengals over the Rams on the Super Bowl 56 moneyline at Tipico.

We’ve reached the midway point of the run up to Super Bowl 56.

Championship Sunday is now a distant memory, the Pro Bowl has come and gone without anyone really noticing and bettors have gotten busy placing their wagers in anticipation of kickoff.

A week ago we learned the Cincinnati Bengals opened as a 4.5-point underdog to capture the Lombardi Trophy against the favored Los Angeles Rams. With six days to go, bettors have mostly decided they don’t even need the points to back the Bengals.

According to Tipico Sportsbook, 74 percent of moneyline bettors have taken Cincinnati (+165, bet $100 to win $165) to win the Super Bowl. On the spread, 51 percent of bettors have the Bengals at +4.5 and 51 percent have taken the point total over 48.5.

Spread: Rams -3.5

Moneyline: Rams (-200), Bengals (+165)

Over/Under: 48.5

The action even helped move the line from Rams -4.5 to Rams -3.5 on Monday morning.

There’s even some good evidence moneyline bettors are making the right decision, too. According to research from BetFTW’s Prince Grimes, teams favored by 4.5 or 5.0 points in the Super Bowl are 0-4 outright in title games.

Should that trend continue, there’s no reason for bettors to take the points. Not when they can grab better odds on the moneyline. After decades of incompetence, the Bengals are not only back in the Super Bowl—they’re the preferred team of most gamblers.

For a team that won just six games total between 2019 and 2020, it shows the Bengals’ stunning turnaround has already won over the hearts and wallets of bettors everywhere.

On Site: Why Rams over Bengals is the safe bet in Super Bowl 56

Los Angeles has home field advantage, a roster full of Pro Bowlers and recent experience on this stage. Is that enough to convince bettors to back the Rams?

On Site is getting ready for Super Bowl week with USA Today columnist Mike Jones stopping by to breakdown the matchup. Despite plenty of historical value on Bengals (+4.5), Jones can’t quite pass up an opportunity to ride with the Rams in their home stadium.

History is not on the Rams’ (-4.5) side as favorites over the Bengals in Super Bowl 56

The history of 4.5-point favorites in the Super Bowl isn’t on the Rams’ side.

The Los Angeles Rams opened as 4.5-point favorites over the Cincinnati Bengals for Super Bowl 56. Days later that spread remains the same at Tipico Sportsbook, as the Rams are thought to have the more complete team heading into the big game.

However, as the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history have shown, being the more complete team or having an edge in Vegas doesn’t always guarantee a win. In fact, as 4.5-point favorites, the Rams actually have reason to be worried.

If the spread holds steady, Los Angeles will be battling some peculiar history when the game finally kicks off. Teams to play in the Super Bowl as 4.5-point favorites are 0-3 in the game, according to historical spreads on Pro Football Reference

That’s right, 4.5-point favorites have never won a Super Bowl.

In general, having to clear five points has been a weird pocket for Super Bowl teams, as the only instance of a 5-point spread also resulted in a loss for the favored team.

While this may be nothing more than one of those interesting and fun coincidences, that won’t sap any excitement from Bengals fans looking for more reasons to believe their team can pull it off. So, below is a look at those four Super Bowl upsets and how the games played out.
