De’Von Achane, Raheem Mostert dealing with injuries

The Dolphins didn’t practice today, but said neither Raheem Mostert nor De’Von Achane would’ve participated if they did.

Just a day after the Miami Dolphins kicked off their 2024 season with a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team had to file its first injury report before a Thursday night game against the Buffalo Bills.

While the Dolphins didn’t practice, they provided an estimation of what participation would look like if they did. And both of the team’s top running backs, Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane, would’ve sat out practice, the Dolphins say.

Neither Mostert nor Achane left the game Sunday against the Jaguars due to their respective chest and ankle injuries. However, the Dolphins leaned on Jeff Wilson Jr. in the fourth quarter, giving the third back on the depth chart five of the last nine rushing attempts. The other four were split between Achane and fullback Alec Ingold.

The biggest name on the Buffalo Bills’ injury report is Josh Allen, who dealt with a hand issue in their win against the Arizona Cardinals. On Monday, head coach Sean McDermott said that Allen will play Thursday and he ruled out cornerback Taron Johnson.

Raheem Mostert has advice for players released on ‘devastating’ cut day

Raheem Mostert knows all to well what it’s like to get bad news on roster cut day.

Before Raheem Mostert emerged with the San Francisco 49ers and long before the running back earned Pro Bowl honors with the Miami Dolphins, he struggled to earn a spot in the NFL.

Mostert, 32, was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Chicago Bears, and even the Dolphins before landing on the 49ers’ practice squad in 2016.

“It’s devastating because your hopes and dreams are right there in front of you and then when you get that phone call, it just seems like that’s a lasting memory,” Mostert said Monday. “I remember when I was in Philly and got that phone call. Unfortunately I was the last guy in the building to receive that phone call and it changed my life

“You’ve just got to grow and learn and become a better player when teams are making those decisions. So I was able to stick with it and to all the guys out there, I just hope the best for them. Especially on this team, because we had a good roster of guys that came in, played their tails off and did everything they possible could to make a roster spot.”

More than a thousand NFL players will be waived or released Tuesday as teams trim their rosters to 53 players each. Fortunately for Mostert, he doesn’t have to worry about turning in his playbook.

But he had one more piece of advice for the players who will hit the waiver wire.

“One thing that I truly was blessed about was that I didn’t burn bridges because those same bridges that you keep ahold of and keep them strong, they come around tenfold,” Mostert said. “That was the case for me when I went from Philly and then Chip Kelly was in San Francisco at the time the following year. And guess what? I made a mark in San Fran.”

Teams have until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday to cut their rosters to 53 players.

Fantasy football: Where to draft Miami Dolphins RB Raheem Mostert

Analyzing Miami Dolphins RB Raheem Mostert’s 2024 fantasy football ADP and where to target him in fantasy drafts.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

Miami Dolphins RB Raheem Mostert had an impressive last season, making his 1st Pro Bowl. The undrafted back out of Purdue (in 2015) led the league last season with 18 rushing touchdowns. Below, we look at Raheem Mostert’s 2024 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Entering 2024, Mostert’s role is expected to change as he shares the backfield. However, with an explosive Miami offense, the veteran running back still has fantasy value.

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

Mostert’s 72.09 ADP in redraft leagues places him in the range of the 6th to 10th round, depending on the size of the league. His ADP is lower than teammate De’Von Achane’s (26.59), though.

Among running backs, Mostert’s ADP ranks 26th at the position. He is behind Carolina’s Jonathon Brooks (72.09), Pittsburgh’s Najee Harris (71.94), Minnesota’s Aaron Jones (67.69), Chicago’s D’Andre Swift (66.12) and Las Vegas’ Zamir White (63.57).

Where should you draft Mostert?

Mostert’s fantasy value should fall this year with the breakout of the 22-year-old Achane, who’s a much more explosive than the aging Mostert, who is 32.

Mostert will still mostly be a small yardage back with an ability to look for and find holes.

The Dolphins offense, captained by QB Tua Tagovailoa who has star WRs in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, will continue to be explosive which will open up the backfield for Achane and Mostert.

Draft Mostert after Achane, but don’t let him fall out of the 7th or 8th round in 10-team leagues. While Mostert may not be RB1, he will make a great RB2, especially with his tendency to receive out of the backfield, which increases his value in PPR leagues.

How to address Miami Dolphins RBs in fantasy football drafts

Here’s how to prioritize this backfield on draft day.

Under head coach Mike McDaniel, the Miami Dolphins offense is predicated on one thing: speed. The club seemingly has track stars at every position, and that includes running back. Last year, it was led by veteran Raheem Mostert and third-round pick De’Von Achane. Despite that tandem combining to miss eight games, the Dolphins still ranked sixth in the NFL in rushing (135.8 yards per game) while finishing first in both yards per carry (5.1) and touchdowns (27; tied).

Even with that success, Miami invested in its backfield during the offseason, selecting RB Jaylen Wright with the 120th overall pick. He adds more depth to a position that also has another steady veteran presence in the form of Jeff Wilson Jr., who has over 2,000 career yards on the ground.

With so many options, it’ll be interesting to see how McDaniel deploys them. Keeping that in mind, let’s look at what fantasy owners might expect from Dolphins running backs this season.

Fantasy Football Consistency Rankings – Running Backs

Running backs are the most consistent of all positions since they handle the ball the most. But which backs were money almost every week?

This ranking considers running backs that started at least 10 games in 2023. Fantasy points were derived using one point per 10 yards rushed or received, six-point touchdowns rushed and one point receptions. Running backs may be devalued in fantasy and the NFL, but they are still likely the most consistent players on your team.

Only nine backs topped 15 fantasy points in more than half of their games. While top fantasy scorers are obviously well represented, Alvin Kamara, Rachaad White, James Conner, and Tony Pollard were in that group. Only six running backs managed that mark last year and just Christian McCaffrey and Derrick Henry repeated from 2022. Five years ago, there were 11 that hit the mark and seven that exceeded 80%. Now there is only one.

The volatility from year to year is dramatic.  And the truly consistent with high production have all but disappeared.

Kenneth Walker III 7
Najee Harris 7
Jerome Ford 7

No question why Christian McCaffrey is a top draft pick every summer. Kyren Williams was the biggest surprise even though Blake Corum may interfere this season. There’s been several player moves that will make repeating the above marks in 2024. Saquon Barkley, Joe Mixon and Austin Ekeler changed teams. The annual influx of young (and cheap) running back talent also could erode some of the workloads.

Watch: Dolphins post ‘NFL’s fastest schedule release’ video

The Dolphins are the NFL’s fastest team, so they unveiled their 2024 schedule at full speed.

The Miami Dolphins love speed.

If an offensive arsenal that already included Tyreek Hill, Raheem Mostert, Jaylen Waddle, and De’Von Achane wasn’t enough, the Dolphins added Jaylen Wright and Odell Beckham Jr. to the mix this offseason.

Naturally, the NFL’s most speed-focused roster had to celebrate the 2024 schedule release as quickly as possible.

In a video posted by the Dolphins on Wednesday night, Hill and Mostert teamed up to unveil the fastest schedule release video in the NFL. Altogether, the 22-second teaser shows the team’s entire schedule in less than two seconds:

Fortunately, for viewers who have eyes that don’t work as fast as the legs of Hill and Mostert, there’s a stationary version too:

Last year, the Dolphins took a much different route to announce the schedule. The team released a three-minute, 28-second video showing several players at a movie theater.

If nothing else, the 2024 version was much more efficient.

Raheem Mostert on Dolphins adding Jaylen Wright: ‘The more the merrier’

Jaylen Wright may end up being Raheem Mostert’s replacement, but the veteran says another speedy running back will be “very beneficial.”

When the Miami Dolphins selected Jaylen Wright in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft, it seemed they were picking Raheem Mostert’s replacement.

Mostert turned 32 last month, which makes him one of the NFL’s oldest active running backs. And at 5’11, 210 pounds with 4.38 speed, Wright is awfully similar to Mostert, a 5’10, 205-pound former track star.

But Mostert says he isn’t pressed by the Dolphins’ decision to take his successor.

“My reaction at the time, I was just like, ‘yeah, whatever, it is what it is,’” Mostert told reporters Tuesday. “It’s the same typical thing, the draft drama pretty much all the time regardless of the position. But no, I’m honestly excited to have Jaylen come in. … . Just excited to have him here and try to coach him up, try to help him out within this offense and let’s see what we can do.

“The more the merrier. That’s what I would say. Especially in this offense. We can utilize a lot of different attributes and speed is definitely an attribute that we like to maximize to the most of our abilities. So to be able to have another guy come into the mix and bring his attributes and his contributions into the offense and his speed is definitely going to be very beneficial on our part.”

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel hopes so too. Shortly after the team picked Wright, he told reporters that he sees the crowded backfield creating a “supreme urgency to do right with the ball.”

Mostert led the Dolphins with 234 touches during the 2023 season, over 100 more than any other player on the team. De’Von Achane, a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, finished with 130 touches.

With another mouth to feed, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Mostert’s touches decrease in 2024. But the veteran also said he isn’t concerned about age catching up to him.

“At age 30 and above, [running backs] typically start to have that decline,” Mostert said. “Well, I didn’t have any wear and tear early on in my career, so it’s a little bit easier for me to go ahead and discredit that narrative altogether. Just continue to just do what I do at the highest level and help this team out and try to bring home a championship.”

Mostert, a former undrafted free agent who bounced around several rosters early in his career, didn’t make his first NFL start until 2020 when he was 28. He had 320 career touches when he signed with the Dolphins in 2022 and had 446 touches in his first two years in Miami.

Former LSU receiver Odell Beckham Jr. finds a new home

Odell Beckham Jr. is taking his talents to South Beach.

A former LSU wide receiver will be making a move as far down the East Coast as possible.

[autotag]Odell Beckham Jr.[/autotag] spent last season with the Baltimore Ravens where he played in 14 games and made 65 receptions for 565 yards and three touchdowns.

This season, he will be moving from the Northeast to the Southeast. He will be taking his talents to South Beach. Odell has signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins that is worth up to $8.5 million.

The Dolphins offense is stacked. Miami has Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback, [autotag]Jaylen Waddle[/autotag], and [autotag]Tyreek Hill[/autotag] at wide receiver, and [autotag]De’Von Achane[/autotag] and [autotag]Raheem Mostert[/autotag] at running back. Adding Beckham to that will make the offense even more explosive.

Beckham will be entering his 11th season in the NFL this fall. During his career, he has played in 110 games making 556 receptions for 7,932 yards, and 59 touchdowns. The Dolphins will be the fifth different team Beckham has played for.

Mike McDaniel: Crowded Dolphins backfield will create ‘supreme urgency’

The Dolphins have a lot of mouths to feed in the backfield, but Mike McDaniel only sees positives coming out of the situation.

The Miami Dolphins have a lot of mouths to feed in their backfield.

There’s Raheem Mostert, who led the NFL in rushing touchdowns last season, De’Von Achane, who averaged 7.8 yards per carry during an electric first season, and Jaylen Wright, a rookie taken with a pick that was acquired for a 2025 third-rounder.

Jeff Wilson Jr., Salvon Ahmed, and Chris Brooks are also set to compete for a roster spot and Pro Bowl fullback Alec Ingold can’t be forgotten either.

While too much talent at a position is a good problem to have, it still presents Mike McDaniel and his coaching staff with the challenge of giving those players opportunities to make an impact. But the coach only sees positives coming out of the situation.

“I think all players benefit,” McDaniel said. “There’s supreme urgency to do right with the ball if you deserve to have it. Yeah, the competition is fierce. I’m fired up because we have a group of competitors that will satisfy the thirst for them. It will be fierce.”

Last season, Mostert got more than double the carries of any other player on the team, finishing with 1,012 yards on 209 attempts. Achane had 103 carries and Wilson was third with 41. Ahmed and Brooks combined for another 41.

Alvin Kamara wins Florida sport fishing tournament

Alvin Kamara took some time off between Saints offseason workouts to get out on the water and reel in a tournament-winning sailfish:

Props to Alvin Kamara for making the most of his offseason. The New Orleans Saints running back headlined “The Catch” sport fishing tournament in Florida last week, teaming up with Miami Dolphins star Raheem Mostert to win the whole thing. They competed with other NFL players including Kamara’s former Saints teammates Trey Hendrickson and Jameis Winston.

One of the highlights of the fishing rodeo came when Kamara and two of his teammates hooked three sailfish at the same time. Kamara described it as “Chaos. Organized chaos … It was great. Lot of moving parts, but I think we did it effortlessly. Raheem was on there. He was fighting for his life. I was fighting for my life for a second. I got mine in first. We had to give Raheem some moral support.”

It was a fun time for all. With offseason training sessions ramping up as the summer approaches, it’s good to see veterans like Kamara making time to enjoy themselves before locking in for months of hard work.
