Roselyn Sanchez shares joy in Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco displaying Puerto Rican flag

Actress Roselyn Sanchez shares joy in Kansas City #Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco representing the Puerto Rican flag w/ @EdEastonJr

Over the weekend, Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. spoke to actress, singer-songwriter, and producer Roselyn Sanchez at a women’s empowerment brunch in Kansas City that was hosted by Donna Kelce in partnership with GSK’s THRIVE@50+ campaign.

Sanchez shared her thoughts about the event and the joy she feels when seeing Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco’s ongoing display of pride in his Puerto Rican heritage.

“I’m excited to be a part of supporting GSK’s THRIVE@50+ campaign; it is such a great opportunity,” Sanchez said. “I am in my 50s. I don’t look it, but I am, and it’s important for women and men as well. To talk to your doctor, talk to your physician about your risks for getting shingles, and about vaccination. It’s something that we don’t think about too often.”

Sanchez, an accomplished actor, director, and entrepreneur, was joined by Brooke Shields, Gina Torres, Susan Noles, and more at the event before Kansas City’s divisional-round playoff matchup against the Houston Texans.

“It’s a blessing to be surrounded by people who just have power, and they have my same line of thought: that we want to be healthy,” Sanchez explained. “It’s my age. It’s all about health and how I can thrive at 50 plus. The way I see it is the second chapter in my life. People know me as an actress. I’ve been acting for 30 years now. I’m transitioning to directing, and it’s a tough job.

“It’s 14 hours a day when you’re directing, and when you’re doing post, and you’re prepping your movie, and if you’re not 100% there with your health and mindful of how you have to eat healthy, be healthy, and take care of yourself, then that dream that I have to be able to transition to be a director is. It’s not; it’s not doable if I don’t have my health. So I think it’s very important to me to be surrounded by women who feel and think alike; it’s amazing.”

Sanchez, a proud native of Puerto Rico, shared her thoughts on Chiefs starting running back Isiah Pacheco’s helmet, which features the island’s flag, being displayed in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“Listen, [this is] everything you have to understand,” Sanchez began. “Puerto Rico is little. If you look at a map of the world, it’s a dot; this tiny, little place is 100 miles east to west, 35 miles north to south. It’s small, and such incredible figures are coming out of Puerto Rico, like athletes Tito Trinidad, Miguel Cotto, and Roberto Clemente. Then, you have somebody like Bad Bunny and Daddy Yankee, Marc Anthony, and Sonia Sotomayor.

“We have all these incredibly influential people coming out of this little island. So every time we have the opportunity to represent, show our pride, come from this little place, and showcase the flag, it’s everything. And you have no idea how much it means to us that he’s doing that. It’s like when Carlos Arroyo, an NBA player (Puerto Rico Basketball Team), played against the U.S. (United States Basketball Team) at the Olympics and showed his Puerto Rican jersey. That moment is everything for us. So we’re incredibly grateful for him for that, and I’m proud.”

Sanchez is married to actor Eric Winter, a well-known Los Angeles Rams fan who is supportive of his interests, stood firmly by the Chiefs during their Divisional victory over the Texans 23-14 on Saturday.

“I mean, kind of, you know, we [have lived] in L.A. for many years,” Sanchez explained. “My kids are like all, like [their] daddy, and they love sports and the Rams. I don’t know too much about football. I know what I mean because my husband played for college and is very much into that world. Being a Puerto Rican, I’m more of a boxing and baseball kind of girl because that’s what we know. I [usually] support whatever he supports. But today, I’m supporting the Chiefs.”

Jayson Tatum in Team USA starting lineup for final group stage game against Puerto Rico

The U.S. men’s basketball team takes on Puerto Rico for the final game of Olympic pool play on Saturday, andJayson Tatum made the starting lineup

The United States men’s basketball team concludes pool play at the 2024 Olympic Games on Saturday against Puerto Rico.

Ahead of the game, the team announced through social media that former Blue Devil [autotag]Jayson Tatum[/autotag] would make the starting lineup.

Tatum, who recently won his first NBA championship with the Boston Celtics, notably did not play in Team USA’s first game against Serbia. Social media questioned the decision, citing the Duke legend’s credentials at the age of 26, but coach Steve Kerr insisted he’d include Tatum later on in the Olympics.

In the Americans’ second game in Paris, Tatum scored four points and came away with five rebounds in a victory over South Sudan.

Tatum also won a battle of the Blue Devils in that game. Incoming Duke basketball star [autotag]Khaman Maluach[/autotag], a five-star 7-footer and a member of Jon Scheyer’s esteemed 2024 recruiting class, made the South Sudan Olympic roster, but he only played two minutes against Team USA.

NBA legends LeBron James and Steph Curry, former NBA MVP Joel Embiid, and Devin Booker started alongside Tatum.

Khaman Maluach, South Sudan win first Olympic basketball game over Puerto Rico

Khaman Maluach and South Sudan erased a six-point halftime deficit for a resounding victory over Puerto Rico, the country’s first Olympic win.

South Sudan has finally won an Olympic basketball game.

[autotag]Khaman Maluach[/autotag] and his countrymen erased a six-point halftime deficit against Puerto Rico on Sunday for a 90-79 victory, the first South Sudan victory in Olympic basketball history.

Puerto Rico built an eight-point lead in the first quarter alone and led 54-48 at the midway point, but South Sudan held them to 25 points over the final two quarters.

Maluach, an incoming Duke basketball freshman and one of four five-star signees in the 2024 recruiting class, played just six minutes. He scored two points and grabbed two rebounds in his limited time. Carlik Jones led the team with 19 points, and South Sudan outrebounded Puerto Rico 55-37.

The victory represents the start of group play in the men’s basketball competition. South Sudan and Puerto Rico sit in Group C alongside the United States and Serbia, who play each other later on Sunday. Each country plays the other three once with the top two teams in each group guaranteed to advance into the quarterfinals. One more victory should virtually assure South Sudan’s spot in the final eight.

Maluach’s new teammates in Durham surely rooted him on this morning, and a handful of them included South Sudan in their podium predictions.

Wisconsin basketball multiyear starter to represent Puerto Rico in 2024 Olympics

Wisconsin basketball multiyear starter to represent Puerto Rico in 2024 Olympics

The Puerto Rico men’s national basketball team booked its ticket on Sunday to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France. It did so with wins over Mexico and then Lithuania in the final two rounds of one of the FIBA men’s Olympic qualifying tournaments.

On the Puerto Rico team that will compete in the Olympics this summer is former Wisconsin multiyear starter Aleem Ford.

Ford first played for Puerto Rico during the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He is part of the territory’s Olympic team along with New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jose Alvarado and Memphis Hustle (NBA G League) small forward Davon Reed.

The former Badger played four years in Madison, Wisconsin. His career included 126 games played from 2017-2021 and per-game averages of 6.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.4 steals and 0.3 blocks.

Ford has bounced around the professional ranks since departing college in 2021. His winding career has included stops with the Leones De Ponce (Puerto Rico, 2021), Lakeland Magic (NBA G League, 2021-22), Orlando Magic (2021), Leones De Ponce (2022), Lakeland Magic (2022-23), Leones De Ponce (2023), Cleveland Charge (NBA G League, 2023-24), Wisconsin Herd (NBA G League, 2023-24) and, finally, back with the Leones De Ponce (2024).

The small forward is looking to make a return to the NBA; he played in five games with the Orlando Magic during the 2021-22 season. A strong showing at the Olympics against some of the world’s top competition could facilitate that return.

He and the Puerto Rico national team will be in Group C when the Olympics tip off this month. They are in a group with the USA, Serbia and South Sudan. The top two teams in the group advance to the elimination bracket.

The action starts on Saturday, July 27 and continues into August.

A tourist in Puerto Rico dove into the water to cool off and was blindsided by what shot out at him from behind like a torpedo in a moment of terror off Cayo Icacos Island.

Laughter turned into loud screams as witnesses for an instant probably thought a shark was attacking him.

Maggie Clark was videotaping him and reported on TikTok that it was a barracuda, and that it did not injure the man only bumped him.

“I would have had a heart attack,” one commenter wrote.

“This is all so hilarious and scary at the same time,” another wrote. “The fact it didn’t bite him makes me lol.”

As soon as the barracuda made a U-turn and all breathed normally again, the laughter surely returned.

“No barracudas were harmed in the making of this video,” Clark wrote.

Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira, who finished runner-up last year, leads Latin America Amateur Championship in record-setting fashion with 18 holes to play

Fernandez de Oliveira’s 18-under total is a 54-hole LAAC record.

It’s safe to say Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira doesn’t want to leave any doubt.

Last year, the senior at Arkansas finished runner-up at the Latin America Amateur Championship. He barely missed out on an invitation to two majors, including the Masters.

This year, the Argentinian has taken command with 18 holes to play. Fernandez de Oliveira went low on moving day, sparked by a stretch of five birdies in as many holes on the back nine to shoot 9-under 63 and take a four-shot advantage to Sunday’s final round at Grand Reserve Golf Club in Puerto Rico. He sits at 18 under for the tournament, leading second-round leader Luis Carrera, who hails from Mexico and is a fifth-year senior at UCF.

Fernandez de Oliveira’s 18-under total is a 54-hole LAAC record. Additionally, his 9-under mark in the third round ties the tournament record set by Joaquin Niemann.

Fellow Razorback teammate Julian Perico is tied for third at 13 under. Perico fired a 5-under 67 during the third round. He’s tied with Vicente Marzillo, who shot 6 under on Saturday.

Fernandez de Oliveira had the best round of the day by two shots, but the highlight came when he birdied Nos. 11-15 to pull into the lead. He finished on a high note, too, birdieing the par-4 18th to cap his bogey-free round.

The winner will receive numerous exemptions, including to the 2023 Masters, the Open Championship and the U.S. Open for the first time. In addition, they will also be fully exempt into the 128th Amateur Championship, the U.S. Amateur Championship and any other USGA amateur championship for which he is eligible.

The runner(s)-up is exempt into the final stages of qualifying for the U.S. Open and Open Championship.
