Argentina vs. El Salvador: How to watch international friendly, live stream

The World Cup champions face the Concacaf nation in the first of two U.S. friendlies in March

Argentina may be without its biggest star, but there will be plenty of talent still on display when the World Cup champion faces El Salvador in a friendly on Friday in Philadelphia.

Fans were disappointed when Argentina announced this week that Lionel Messi would miss this match, as well as the team’s friendly against Costa Rica in Los Angeles next week, after suffering a “minor injury” in his right hamstring.

But some of Argentina’s biggest stars from its World Cup-winning squad will be present for the two matches, including Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister, Ángel Di María, Julián Álvarez and more.

Messi ruled out for Argentina friendlies in Philadelphia and Los Angeles

The Inter Miami star will be forced out of matches against El Salvador and Costa Rica

Lionel Messi has been ruled out for a pair of upcoming Argentina friendlies in the United States due to injury.

Messi suffered what the Argentina Football Federation (AFA) called a “minor injury” in his right hamstring last Wednesday during Inter Miami’s Concacaf Champions Cup match against Nashville SC.

After missing Inter Miami’s game against D.C. United over the weekend, Messi has now been ruled out for Friday’s game against El Salvador in Philadelphia and a March 26 match against Costa Rica in Los Angeles.

“Argentina captain Lionel Messi won’t be able to be in the squad for the friendlies in the USA due to a minor right hamstring injury suffered in Inter Miami’s match against Nashville SC,” an AFA statement read.

Messi has struggled with injury on multiple occasions so far in 2024, with a preseason muscle injury limiting him during Inter Miami’s tour of Asia.

After recovering in time for the MLS regular season, Messi returned to his usual outstanding form by tallying five goals and two assists across five matches in all competitions.

Though Messi won’t be part of Argentina’s squad for its March friendlies, fans in the U.S. will still have plenty more chances to see the legendary figure if he is healthy this summer.

Argentina will face Ecuador at Soldier Field in Chicago on June 9, before a June 14 match against Guatemala at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. Those two friendlies will take place just before the 2024 Copa América, which could see Argentina play up to six more games in the United States.

El Salvador league cancels rest of playoffs after stadium tragedy

At least 12 people were killed during a stadium crush on Saturday night

The remainder of the El Salvador league playoffs have been cancelled after a stadium crush left at least 12 dead, the country’s football association has announced.

The incident occurred at the Estadio Cuscatlán on Saturday night, with a quarterfinal second leg between Alianza FC and Club Deportivo FAS called off during the first half amid a crush of fans.

More than 90 people were injured in addition to the fatalities.

Officials believe that the sale of fake tickets and a malfunctioning Wi-Fi system may have contributed to the chaos, which was heightened when a gate to the south zone of the stadium wasn’t opened.

“As the governing body of Salvadoran football, FESFUT, and the organizer of the El Salvador National Championship, Liga Primera Division, we have determined to end the 2022-2023 El Salvador national championship,” a statement from El Salvador’s FA said.

“Our priority will be to ensure that security measures are strengthened at football events. With the support and international advice from FIFA and CONCACAF, we will implement better protocols that provide guarantees for the peace of mind of fans and all involved in these events.”

Earlier this week, Alianza FC was handed a one-year stadium ban and fined $30,000 for its role in the tragedy.

Stadium crush in El Salvador leaves at least 12 dead

The incident took place during a playoff match between Alianza FC and Club Deportivo FAS.

El Salvador’s government has said at least 12 people are dead and about 90 others are injured after a crush of fans at the Estadio Cuscatlán on Saturday night.

The incident took place during the second leg of a playoff quarterfinal between Alianza FC and Club Deportivo FAS in San Salvador, the country’s capital.

Several reports stated that fans attempted to enter the stadium after the gates had been closed, which caused a crush of people. The game was stopped 16 minutes into the first half when it became clear there was a major problem in the stands.

“It was an avalanche of fans who overran the gate,” a volunteer with the Rescue Commandos first aid group told journalists, per the BBC. “Some were still under the metal in the tunnel. Others managed to make it to the stands and then to the field and were smothered.”

El Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele said the national police and attorney general would conduct a “thorough investigation” into the incident.

“Everyone will be investigated: teams, managers, stadium, box office, league, federation, etc. Whoever the culprits are, they will not go unpunished,” Bukele said on Twitter.

At a news conference on Saturday night, the director of El Salvador’s national police said that the stadium’s Wi-Fi may have malfunctioned, leading to fans with valid tickets being denied entry when their QR codes would not scan.

On Sunday, the AP seemed to bolster that theory through interviews with witnesses on the ground:

Fans angry at being blocked from entering a Salvadoran soccer league match despite having tickets knocked down a small access gate to the stadium, creating a crush that killed 12 people and injured dozens, officials and witnesses said Sunday.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives after the tragic incidents that have taken place in El Salvador during the match between Alianza FC and Club Deportivo FAS,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement.

“Together with FIFA and the global football community, all our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected, as well as with the people of the Republic of El Salvador, the CONCACAF Confederation, the Salvadoran Football Association, and the Primera División de Fútbol de El Salvador, at this difficult time.”

USMNT player ratings: Pepi and Reyna shine in narrow El Salvador win

The U.S. got over the line against El Salvador, but it was far from an easy night in Orlando

The U.S. men’s national team didn’t enjoy quite the same level of dominance on Monday as they did three days prior — but they got the job done anyway.

Days after a blowout win in Grenada, the USMNT was pushed hard by a well-organized El Salvador team in Orlando. But ultimately, Ricardo Pepi came off the bench to deliver the decisive moment in a 1-0 win.

The victory sees the USMNT reach the CONCACAF Nations League semifinal as they’ll look to defend their title from 2021.

Here are our ratings from a tense evening at Exploria Stadium.

Resurgent Pepi secures narrow win for USMNT over El Salvador

The in-form striker scored his third goal in two games this international break

ORLANDO — Recalled and resurgent, Ricardo Pepi’s instant striking impact secured the United States men’s national team’s spot in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinal.

Pepi scored within two minutes of entering as a second-half substitute, the eventual decisive goal in a 1-0 victory over El Salvador at Exploria Stadium in the final game of Group D play. The U.S. collected 10 of a possible 12 points in its group, which also included Grenada, whom it battered 7-1 on Friday night.

Pepi, the former FC Dallas starlet, netted a brace in that contest and now has six goals in 14 appearances for the national team. He’s rediscovered his scoring touch during a loan spell at Dutch side Groningen, producing nine goals in 21 Eredivisie matches — compared to no goals in 16 across all competitions at Augsburg, which broke its transfer fee last January to sign the then-19-year-old.

“It’s been a roller coaster, to be honest,” Pepi said after the game. “I’m happy to be in the squad and scoring goals again after missing the World Cup. I think I made a big statement tonight, and I’m just happy to be fighting with my teammates again and helping them out.”

El Salvador limited the U.S. to six shots in the first half, none that truly troubled goalkeeper Mario Martínez. Hugo Perez’s squad was resolute in the home leg back in June as well, grinding out a 1-1 draw as Jordan Morris provided a 91st-minute equalizer for the visitors.

El Salvador might have had the best opportunity of the opening half as well, with Jairo Henríquez forcing Matt Turner into a diving save inside of two minutes. The Arsenal goalkeeper later received treatment for discomfort on his left side, but remained in the game.

The U.S. seized control out of halftime. Gio Reyna played a tidy combination with Christian Pulisic down the left flank and drilled the near post roughly 45 seconds after the whistle. Tim Ream and Weston McKennie could not convert consecutive chances off corners, and Alejandro Zendejas was denied on a lob attempt courtesy of Bryan Tamacas’ sliding goal-line clearance.

Pepi checked in at the hour mark for former Orlando City standout Daryl Dike, and made an immediate impact. He bent his first run around Roberto Domínguez and after a fantastic ball from McKennie, fought off the defender and calmly chipped Martínez.

Only two players scored six goals for the U.S. senior side at a younger age than Pepi (20 years, 77 days): Pulisic and Jozy Altidore.

“Really pleased with him, for him,” interim manager Anthony Hudson said. “With his club team, unfortunately not being in a great place in the table, sometimes it can be tough. … When you come out of that environment, and come back to your national team environment, it gives you a little bit of a break.

“I think that has helped him. We, as a staff, really value him. We love him as a person and as a character, and we believe in him. And, yeah, he’s had a good week. He’s come in, taken his chances and, to be fair to him, he could have had quite a few more.”

Mexico prevailed in Group A on Sunday night with a 2-2 draw against Jamaica, reaching the Nations League final four. Groups B and C will be decided Tuesday when Canada hosts Honduras and Costa Rica faces Panama.

The semifinals are scheduled for June 15 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Orlando, meanwhile, continues to be a stronghold for the Americans. With the win, the USMNT improves to 6-0-0 all-time at Exploria Stadium, including a 5-1 rout over Panama in a World Cup qualifier 364 days ago.

USMNT roster: Reyna and Zendejas in, Adams injured for Nations League games

The USMNT will face Grenada on March 24 and El Salvador on March 27

Gio Reyna and the recently committed Alex Zendejas were named to the U.S. men’s national team roster for its upcoming CONCACAF Nations League matches against Grenada and El Salvador.

Interim coach Anthony Hudson named a 24-player squad for the games later this month, which take place in the first FIFA window since the 2022 World Cup.

As such, Hudson was able to name a mostly full-strength squad, which will be missing captain Tyler Adams due to a hamstring injury.

There was a return for Reyna, who, along with his parents, has been embroiled in scandal since the World Cup. Zendejas, who made his USMNT debut in January, also made the cut after he committed to the U.S. over Mexico this week.

There were also returns for a few players who narrowly missed the World Cup roster, most notably Zack Steffen, who was surprisingly cut after appearing to be in the mix to start in goal. Late cuts Mark McKenzie, Johnny Cardoso and Ricardo Pepi are also included.

Another notable name on the roster is Miles Robinson, the lone MLS representative. The Atlanta United center back returns for the first time since his World Cup dream was cruelly ended by a torn Achilles tendon suffered in May 2022.

The USMNT will travel to face Grenada on March 24 (8:00 p.m. ET on TNT, Universo and Peacock), which will be followed by a game against El Salvador on March 27 at Exploria Stadium in Orlando (7:30 p.m. ET on TNT, Universo and Peacock).

The USMNT is aiming to reach June’s Nations League finals and defend its title. Defeat to El Salvador would eliminate the U.S., while a loss at Grenada would also position El Salvador to win Group D with a draw in Florida, as the three-team round robin format leaves little margin for error.

USMNT roster (club; caps/goals)

GOALKEEPERS (3): Ethan Horvath (Luton Town; 8/0), Zack Steffen (Middlesbrough; 29/0), Matt Turner (Arsenal; 24/0)

DEFENDERS (8): Sergiño Dest (AC Milan; 23/2), Mark McKenzie (Genk; 10/0), Tim Ream (Fulham; 50/1), Bryan Reynolds (Westerlo; 2/0), Antonee Robinson (Fulham; 33/2), Miles Robinson (Atlanta United; 20/3), Joe Scally (Borussia Mönchengladbach; 3/0), Auston Trusty (Birmingham City; 0/0)

MIDFIELDERS (6): Brenden Aaronson (Leeds United; 28/6), Johnny Cardoso (Internacional; 4/0), Luca de la Torre (Celta Vigo; 12/0), Weston McKennie (Leeds United; 41/9), Yunus Musah (Valencia; 23/0), Alan Soñora (Juárez; 2/0)

FORWARDS (7): Taylor Booth (Utrecht; 0/0), Daryl Dike (West Bromwich Albion; 8/3), Ricardo Pepi (Groningen; 12/3), Christian Pulisic (Chelsea; 56/22), Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund; 16/4), Tim Weah (Lille; 29/4), Alex Zendejas (Club América; 1/0)

USMNT draws El Salvador in beautiful, muddy mess of a CONCACAF night

The USMNT’s four-game window ended with a game that was pure, undistilled CONCACAF

The U.S. men’s national team ended its four-match June window with a pure, undistilled taste of CONCACAF.

Tuesday night’s game in El Salvador had brutal challenges, fisticuffs between players, a pair of red cards, a goalkeeper howler, a blown penalty call, torrential rain, and mud. Lots and lots of mud.

In the end the USMNT drew El Salvador 1-1 in the CONCACAF Nations League, a result that was only secured by a late Jordan Morris equalizer after both teams had been reduced to 10 men.

The first goal on the night came from a bizarre bit of goalkeeping from Ethan Horvath. The Nottingham Forest keeper was caught out of position when Alexander Larín shot from an impossible angle far out on the flank, and then simply froze as he watched the ball sail into the back of the net.

That goal looked like it would stand up for the home side at the Estadio Cuscatlán, but Morris came off the bench to score a stoppage-time header and give the U.S. a deserved share of the points.

After a stop-start opening period the USMNT came out improved in the second half, with halftime subs Jesús Ferreria and Weston McKennie making a notable impact on proceedings right away.

It appeared a result may be slipping away in the 70th minute though, when Paul Arriola, having only come off the bench nine minutes prior, was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge.

But Yunus Musah, who again was perhaps the most impressive USMNT player on the evening, drew a straight red card on Ronald Rodríguez just minutes later after a surging run through the midfield forced the defender to take him down when he was set to be in alone on goal.

That set up a grandstand finish with Morris connecting off a cross from fellow substitute Luca de la Torre, scoring his first USMNT goal since coming back from a torn ACL suffered in February 2021.
