Top candidates for Lions breakout players in 2022

Here are the top candidates for the Lions players who take a big step forward in 2022.

Which Detroit Lions players are good bets to break out in the 2022 season?

Cue up “Breakout” by the Foo Fighters for appropriate background music…

Rookies are excluded here, though I will cop to believing that third-round safety Kerby Joseph is going to have a very big positive impact on the Lions secondary. Free agency newcomers are also left out because the obvious implication of signing a guy like DJ Chark is that he will have a breakout season (why else would you sign him for that money?). These are focused on returning players.

Here are the top candidates for the Lions players who take a big step forward in 2022.

ESPN FPI projects outcome of 2022 Georgia football season

ESPN FPI projections for Georgia’s 2022 CFB season

The Georgia Bulldogs, your defending college football national champions, are projected by most outlets as a top-three team to open the 2022 college football season.

ESPN’s Football Power Index is right there with them, ranking the Bulldogs as college football’s No. 3 team in its preseason FPI rankings. The FPI not only ranks every program, but also projects a team’s chances of accomplishing a magnitude of different achievements.

Georgia finished the 2021 regular season with a 12-0 record en route to winning it all. However, last preseason the FPI was not too high on the Dawgs, ranking them No. 7 in its preseason rankings with a projected win/loss of 9.5-3.2. It also gave UGA a 0.9% chance of going undefeated and just a 2.2% chance of winning the national title.

Maybe the software has learned its lesson, as Georgia projects much higher than it did last season, despite returning a less loaded roster. Here’s a look at how the FPI projects Georgia to fare this upcoming season.

Comparing contract projections for top Saints free agents

What contracts for Saints’ Jameis Winston, Terron Armstead, Marcus Williams, and Deonte Harty could look like based on expert projections, via @RossJacksonNOLA:

The New Orleans Saints have several important outgoing free agents this offseason. While the salary cap situation is not as dire as one may expect upon first glance, the Saints may have to make some tough decisions based on spending vs. player value. Part of what will dictate that spending will be the market for their top free agents. That market will be defined by what teams outside of New Orleans are willing to spend. To get an idea of what those markets could look like, here are projections from various outlets for four of the Saints’ top free agents.

2022 SEC football projections: How is Alabama expected to finish?

The Crimson Tide will return a lot of key talent in 2022.

Alabama’s 2021 season unexpectedly finished in a loss to Georgia in the National Championship. It was unexpected because the team’s play throughout the season was not one of a national title contender.

Some close wins against opponents that should not have posed challenges to the Crimson Tide, as well as a loss on the road to a weak Texas A&M team exposed some weaknesses in the young 2021 Alabama team.

With plenty of key players returning for the 2022 season, and some important transfers joining the program, the Crimson Tide is expected to run the table in the upcoming regular season.

In the latest 247Sports SEC football projections, Alabama is expected to finish 12-0 and be the strongest team in the conference with a College Football Playoff position locked up before conference championships.

Brad Crawford of 247Sports writes,

“Betting over 11.5 wins is always dangerous given how difficult it is to go unscathed in the SEC, but Alabama should be at least a touchdown favorite in every game next fall and faces a schedule without too many dangerous areas for the defending league champs. If the Crimson Tide stay healthy and the Bryce Young-Will Anderson once again obliterates the competition, Nick Saban’s team should be able to write their ticket to the playoff no matter what happens in Atlanta. A Week 2 showdown at Texas is one to watch in the non-conference.”

The 2022 season is still months away, but Roll Tide Wire will continue to share updates, reports and storylines regarding Alabama football.

USA TODAY still not that sold on Notre Dame’s NCAA chances

What does Notre Dame have to finish to make the tournament?

Notre Dame has been playing great basketball of late, winning seven of their last eight games.  The Irish are now 17-7 on the year as they enter Saturday night’s game at Clemson, but despite the recent surge, the USA TODAY’s bracketology isn’t as sold on their tournament resume.

Shelby Mast and Scott Gleeson put together this week’s bracket projection and had Notre Dame in the big dance but by the skin of their teeth.  The pair projected the Irish to play Belmont in the 12 vs. 12 play-in game, making the Irish one of the last four in.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame is firmly on the bubble as a play-in No. 12 seed in the latest projection despite being tied with Duke atop the ACC. It’s an example of how the NCAA selection committee pays no attention to league rankings and how a team has to make up for lost ground if it plays poorly in non-conference games, as the Irish did. Notre Dame is surging, though, having won seven of its past eight.

I think they’re slightly harsh on the Irish resume through the committee’s eyes with the ACC being improved in the national rankings compared to where it was even just a month ago.  What does it mean for Notre Dame?

I think they’re a little safer than sneaking into a play-in game but my best advice would be to just keep winning and leave as little up to chance as possible.

ESPN Bracketology update forecasts interesting Notre Dame opponent

Should the basketball team play USC regularly?

Notre Dame and USC make up one of the best rivalries in all of college football as the two programs have put more players in the NFL than any other schools nationally.

They’ve won a combined 14 Heisman Trophies and a slew of national championships on the gridiron all while playing each every year since the 1920’s except for when a World War and a pandemic didn’t allow them to.

The two don’t share the same history in basketball, nor do they share a rivalry in basketball.  Notre Dame and USC have met just eight times ever in basketball with the two sides splitting the series at four and the last game not having been played since December of 1992.

ESPN’s updated Bracketology on Friday morning has that streak ending however as Joe Lunardi projects the two to meet in the NCAA Tournament’s opening round.

Lunardi pegs USC as the seven seed in the Midwest region while Notre Dame earns his 10-spot.

Lunardi as well as any other tournament forecaster’s projections change literally by the day so its hard buy into the idea much right now but is certainly fun to think about as the Irish continue their impressive turnaround under Mike Brey this season.
