The Baltimore Ravens (10-2) head to Buffalo to face a 9-3 Bills squad on Sunday afternoon. Baltimore leads the all-time series 5-3, including a 47-3 blowout last season. Good news for Buffalo though, the two times these teams met in New York (2007 and 2013), both resulted in wins for the home team.

We may have witnessed a preview of the Super Bowl this past weekend when the Ravens and 49ers squared-off. Baltimore was able to edge out San Francisco 20-17 despite some terrible weather conditions. Lamar Jackson didn’t have his best game passing going 14 of 25 for 101 yards and one touchdown, but it didn’t matter. Jackson picked up where he left off in the run game with 16 carries for 101 yards and another score. This year, he’s totaled 977 yards rushing and will most certainly break the 1,000-yard barrier against the Bills. To put his numbers in perspective, he is ranked ninth in rushing in all of the NFL. Kyler Murray is the next best quarterback on the list with 446 yards. Jackson is a highlight reel waiting to happen and has teamed with Mark Ingram in the backfield to give the Ravens the best rushing attack in the league and second-best offense.

Jackson is a difference-maker, but the Baltimore defense is playing lights out lately. Against the 49ers, it recorded two sacks and limited Jimmy Garoppolo to 165 yards and one touchdown.  Raheem Mostert was able to run the ball efficiently on the defense with 19 carries for 146 yards, and one touchdown. The Ravens are fifth in points allowed (18.2) and sixth in rushing yards allowed (94.2 YPG). Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen isn’t afraid to run the ball or hand off to running backs Devin Singletary or Frank Gore. The defense’s ability to stop the run will be key in this game.

What a difference a year makes. Buffalo was 6-10 last year and is now 9-3 and hot on the heels of the New England Patriots in the AFC East. The Bills have won three in a row, including a 26-15 win over the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Josh Allen accounted for 274 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns, while Devin Singletary posted 101 total yards and one touchdown. Cole Beasley led the team with six catches for 110 yards and one touchdown against his former team. It marked the first 100+ yard receiving game of the season for Beasley.

The game plan is simple defensively. Stop Lamar Jackson and the Ravens running game. How the team is able to execute it is a different story. Buffalo was able to sack quarterback Dak Prescott four times, two of those coming from rookie Ed Oliver, and force an interception. The defense ranks third in total defense with opponents averaging 300.1 YPG and will face arguably their biggest test of the year this weekend.

The Green Bay Packers (9-3) appear to be a playoff team this season, as they continue to pile up wins to lead the NFC North. However, they have a game on Sunday that could be trickier than expected against the Washington Redskins, a team that has found their footing in recent weeks.

Washington got a second consecutive win last week when it upset the Carolina Panthers 29-21 after falling behind 14-0. The Redskins then proceeded to score the next 29 points in the eventual victory. Derrius Guice was the star of the show for Washington in the win, rushing for 129 yards on just 10 carries with two touchdowns. The team held Christian McCaffrey to just 44 yards on the ground and 58 receiving yards. The team will hope to have similar success on defense against the stars of the Packers.

Green Bay got a 31-13 win over the New York Giants last weekend. Aaron Rodgers threw for 243 yards and four touchdown passes with no interceptions at a snowy MetLife Stadium. The much maligned Packers defense intercepted rookie quarterback Daniel Jones three times and will hope to have similar success against another first-year quarterback in Dwayne Haskins in this contest. Green Bay sits just one game ahead of the Minnesota Vikings for first place in the NFC North entering Week 14.

San Francisco (10-2) heads to New Orleans (10-2) to take on the Saints in what could be a potential preview of the NFC Championship game. The 49ers lead the all-time series 48-26-2, but it was a three-touchdown performance from Drew Brees that gave the Saints a 41-23 victory in the last matchup between these two teams back in 2016.

The 49ers have just two losses this season. The first came vs. Seahawks in a 20-17 overtime thriller. The other came against the red hot Ravens in a 20-17 defeat due to a game-winning field goal by Justin Tucker as time expired. Both have been heartbreakers. Against Baltimore, Jimmy Garropolo kept his cool and went 15-for-21 with 165 yards and one touchdown even in the rainy, windy conditions. Raheem Mostert racked up 146 yards and one score on 19 carries. The offense is second in rushing in the NFL with an average of 148 YPG. That’s the identity of this team, a physical brand of football on both sides of the ball.

Defensively, San Francisco is ranked first in total defense (250.9 YPG) and first in pass defense (134.2 YPG). Last weekend against the Ravens, the 49ers held Baltimore to under 300 total yards and Lamar Jackson to 105 yards and one touchdown passing. Fred Warner led the way with 11 tackles. Dre Greenshaw chipped in eight more and DeForest Buckner racked up six tackles and the lone sack of the game.

It wasn’t a pretty performance offensively, but the Saints won their third consecutive game in a row with a 26-18 defeat over NFC South foe Atlanta on the road. Drew Brees completed 18 of 34 passes for 184 yards and one touchdown. The only game he threw for fewer yards this season was Week 2 when he left due to injury. Michael Thomas was held to just six catches for 48 yards by the Falcons defense and Alvin Kamara carried the ball 11 times for 61 yards. Can Brees and Thomas bounce back against a stingy San Francisco defense? They will need to be efficient on third down as well, converting two out of 10 attempts against the Falcons.

Ferocious. That’s how the Saint’ defense played against Atlanta. The unit recorded nine sacks, two interceptions and had a total of three turnovers. Cameron Jordan accounted for six tackles and four of those sacks to bring his season total to 13.5, second-best in the NFL. Craig Robertson added seven tackles and one sack, while Marcus Davenport picked up four tackles and two sacks. New Orleans is third in rushing defense with opponents averaging 88.6 YPG. Its ability to slow down the 49ers rushing attack will be crucial to the team’s success.

Behind Enemy Lines, Week 14: Previewing Saints vs. 49ers

Jimmy Garoppolo, Richard Sherman, and the San Francisco 49ers are about to kick off against Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints.

[jwplayer FgrNrsL9-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints are hours away from a pivotal kickoff against the San Francisco 49ers, so we went to Kyle Madson over at Niners Wire for the best-informed take on what fans are in for. Here’s what he shared with us in previewing Sunday’s game.

1. We know Kyle Shanahan would rather run the football and that George Kittle is the superstar, but what other receiving options do the 49ers have when Jimmy Garoppolo is forced to drop back and pass?

The answer to this question has changed dramatically the last several weeks, but now the 49ers have a trio of good receivers that’ve emerged the last three weeks as bona fide threats in the passing game.

Veteran Emmanuel Sanders is as good as ever coming off a rib injury. His ability to get open in tight windows plays well in Shanahan’s offense and with Garoppolo’s gunslinger style. He quickly developed a rapport with Sanders and won’t hesitate to go to him in crucial situations.

Deebo Samuel’s developing a similar chemistry with Garoppolo late in his rookie season. He has 20 catches for 337 yards and two touchdowns the last four games, and was the target on Garoppolo’s first touchdown pass against the Ravens — a 33-yard throw on fourth-and-2 on San Francisco’s first drive of the game.

Third-year, former undrafted free agent Kendrick Bourne has also overcome some drop issues to emerge as a tertiary playmaker on the perimeter. He’s not huge, but plays bigger than his size and catches the ball away from his body with strong hands, which makes him a viable target in the red zone and on third downs.

All of the 49ers running backs can split out wide and make receptions out of the backfield too. We’ve reached a point where the talent is there when the 49ers do want to throw the ball, their success is more predicated on whether Garoppolo turns it over.

2. Richard Sherman has had a career revival since joining the 49ers after his Seahawks tenure was cut short. Is he going to shadowing Michael Thomas all over the field or does he typically stick to one side? How do you expect that matchup to play out?

Sherman stays on the left side. Ahkello Witherspoon lines up on the right and K’Waun Williams is the nickel corner. All three are very good, and Sherman and Williams will probably find themselves in the Pro Bowl. As for Sherman vs. Thomas, Thomas is the type of receiver who can get Sherman a couple times. He’s such a strong route runner that it thwarts the high football IQ Sherman typically uses to make up for any lack of athleticism. That said, it’s pretty rare Sherman gets beat multiple times with the same look. Not a lot of teams test the veteran corner, but it’s hard to imagine Drew Brees will be afraid to take shots at him with Thomas. That’s the matchup I’m most looking forward to watching, and whoever gets the better of it may wind up deciding the game.

3. San Francisco has an argument to make as the league’s best rushing offense, but the Saints can tout their defense as one of the strongest against the run. What’s going to happen when an unstoppable object hits an immovable force?

Well, this depends a little bit. The Saints being without A.J. Klein and Kiko Alonso could change how the 49ers operate a little on offense. They’re not afraid to attack the middle of the field in the short and intermediate passing game, so a more high-volume game from Garoppolo with a ton of play action could be in the cards. However, they’re going to at least try and run, especially with the trio of Matt Breida, Tevin Coleman and Raheem Mostert fully healthy for really the first time all season. San Francisco’s offense thrives on deception, so we may see some different things from them against a tremendous New Orleans front. It’s not likely the Saints’ streak of allowing a 100-yard rusher ends Sunday, but the 49ers will hammer away with the run game in hopes of one of their backs breaking off a huge run. While I don’t foresee the 49ers racking up nearly 200 yards like they did against the Ravens, I do think they’ll have a little more success than the typical 88.5 yards the Saints allow per game.

4. Finally, who’s winning this one?

This one smells a little bit like the 49ers-Packers game with one major difference — the Saints’ defense is really, really good. That said, the 49ers’ defense is probably a little better, and they’ve teed off against pocket quarterbacks like Drew Brees. Taysom Hill is a nice wrinkle, and Alvin Kamara is one of the most dangerous backs in the league, so the weapons are there to score some, but the 49ers defense isn’t liable to give up 30-plus. The same goes for the Saints defense against a multifaceted 49ers offense that’s starting to hit its stride. I think going in these teams are very evenly matched, and I think that’ll be the takeaway afterward. 49ers 23, Saints 20

Week 14 preview and prediction: Seattle Seahawks at LA Rams

Previewing and predicting the outcome of the Week 14, Sunday night divisional battle between the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams.

The Seattle Seahawks are gearing up for their 2019 debut on “Sunday Night Football” when they have their rematch with the Los Angeles Rams.

The Seahawks have had one of the most difficult remaining schedules and it does not get any easier against a talented and desperate division rival hungry for revenge. Seattle battled Los Angeles earlier this year in Week 5, and while the Seahawks ultimately won, the Rams most likely feel they should have emerged victorious.

The Rams left CenturyLink Field in defeat only because their game-winning field goal attempt missed wide right by the skin of its teeth.

Since their Thursday night showdown, the Rams have been somewhat listless, struggling mightily – especially in November, when they lost two out of three games, including their 45-6 shellacking at home on “Monday Night Football.” However, perhaps the Rams have turned a corner.

The Rams absolutely embarrassed the mostly competent Cardinals on the road in Week 13 to the tune of 34-7. It appears Los Angeles’ offense could be back on track after a brutal month stretch, which is bad news for the Seahawks.

No. 16 Notre Dame at Stanford: Fighting Irish Wire Predictions

They’re like west-coast Boston College without being a Catholic school.

Playing at Stanford stinks.

From afar it appears nobody in the home-crowd cares, the field is reminiscent of Notre Dame Stadium’s pre-field turf and there have been plenty of nightmares there for the last decade.

With that said, No. 16 Notre Dame has to go there and win if they’re going to finish the regular season with ten wins and have even the smallest of chances of getting to the Cotton Bowl (which I declared them dead for Tuesday night).

So what happens when 9-2 Notre Dame hits the wet and torn up turf at 4-7 Stanford at 4 pm ET today?  Here’s our best guesses:

Jeff F:

It’s fitting that again Notre Dame, needing to put on a show for the playoff committee, ends up in Stanford. This place has been full of nightmares the last decade but after last season’s playoff experience they’ll be better equipped to handle today, regardless of how mediocre Stanford has been.  Time to erase a decade of heartbreak clean and get a victory today.

Notre Dame 34, Stanford 13

Nick S.:

Like some people complain about the Navy game and want to see it gone, I say the same for Stanford.  They’ve been good for ten years, otherwise just been mostly-trash that has only caused trouble once this series began being played annually.  They’re pretty much west-coast Boston College without being a Catholic school.

Show me where this beat up Stanford team is better than Notre Dame because I’m having trouble thinking the Irish don’t walk in and push around this Cardinal defense for 60 minutes with Ian Book going crazy for 150+ in the run game.

All Irish who make the Cardinal quit, yet Brian Kelly keeps it respectable against David Shaw.

Notre Dame 38, Stanford 10

Roll Tide. War Eagle. Hearing those chants can only mean one thing. It’s officially the Iron Bowl game between No. 5 Alabama (10-1, 6-1) and No. 15 Auburn (8-3, 4-3). The Tigers will look to play spoiler to the Crimson Tide, who are still trying to make it into the College Football Playoff. They will have to do it on the road after dominating Auburn in a 52-21 win in Tuscaloosa last season.

Time: 3:30 p.m. ET

TV: CBS

Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

It’s been an unexpected two weeks for Alabama, especially on offense. After quarterback Tua Tagovailoa sustained a season-ending injury against Mississippi State, it’s been backup QB Mac Jones who’s had to fill the shoes of the once Heisman hopeful. He’ll need to have the best performance of his young collegiate career against what many consider to be the best defensive line in the country. A dominant performance by Alabama against battle-tested Auburn on the road would make a powerful statement to the selection committee, who is unsure of how successful Alabama can be without Tagovailoa. In last week’s game against Western Carolina, Jones went 10-for-12 with 275 yards and three touchdowns. For Jones and the rest of the offense, it’s all about keeping it simple and relying on the players at the skill positions.

Don’t let Auburn’s record fool you. They may have three losses, but they have come against some of the top teams in the country, including No. 2 LSU, No. 4 Georgia and No. 8 Florida. In his weekly press conference, Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn talked about the excitement of this year’s matchup and how last year’s loss will help this year’s team. However, this is the first time true freshman quarterback Bo Nix will get to experience playing in the Iron Bowl. In seven of his last nine games – the losses to Florida and LSU the outliers – he has hit 60 percent or more of his passes. The Tigers dominated Sanford 52-0 in a warmup for this weekend’s game. Nix was a steady 15-for-23 with 150 yards and one touchdown, before being taken out so the backup quarterbacks could get some playing time.

Storm A Brewing for Notre Dame’s Stanford Trip

Although I’m guessing the final score won’t quite reach 57-7 like it did in 2003, the traditionally sloppy track at Stanford Stadium will probably mean for a lot of strict running plays.

Last time we saw Notre Dame play in a heavy rain storm was when they were getting dealt a slice of humble pie in Ann Arbor.  If the mood of the night for the Fighting Irish could be described by a kind of weather it’d be the cold (almost) November rain that fell on them during that 45-14 loss in late-October.

Saturday’s game won’t be played under the lights in Stanford but it will offer plenty of rain between the Fighting Irish and Cardinal.

The Weather Channel lists the chances of rain at 70% for early Saturday in Palo Alto, California with the chances of it only increasing as the day turns to night.  The forecast also calls for a solid 16-18 MPH wind throughout the afternoon.

Although I’m guessing the final score won’t quite reach 57-7 like it did in 2003, the traditionally sloppy track at Stanford Stadium will probably mean for a lot of strict running plays.

Perhaps the Fighting Irish can match or surpass the 320 yards and four touchdowns they rushed for in that 2003 season-finale.

For what it’s worth the Cardinal are allowing 147.2 rush yards per contest in 2019 while Notre Dame is averaging 177.3 yards on the ground per contest this year.

Kickoff is set for 4 PM ET and will air on FOX.

Behind Enemy Lines: Previewing New Orleans Saints vs. Falcons

The New Orleans Saints need to defeat the Atlanta Falcons on Thanksgiving night to clinch a third consecutive NFC South division title.

[jwplayer jcPYpmHE]

The NFL’s three-game slate for Thanksgiving is headlined by the New Orleans Saints’ road trip to play the Atlanta Falcons; despite Atlanta’s sorry record (the Falcons are 3-8 on the year so far, and a combined 21-24 in the years since they blew a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl LI) this game has big implications for both teams. A Falcons loss could signal the end for embattled head coach Dan Quinn; it would also allow the Saints to clinch their third straight NFC South title and punch their ticket for the playoffs.

So with so much on the line, we reached out to Matt Urben over at Falcons Wire to get the best-informed perspective. Here’s what he had to say in our Q&A:

1. The Falcons handed out a beat down to the Saints and Panthers in back to back weeks, but Jameis Winston and the Bucs beat them in a boat race last Sunday. Have the Falcons found some winning strategies coming out of the bye or are they simply executing better?

It’s been a little bit of both, honestly. A lot was made of Dan Quinn relinquishing defensive coordinator duties to Jeff Ulbrich and Raheem Morris, but it comes down to the players executing and playing with confidence. The Falcons also moved Ricardo Allen to strong safety during the bye week and the coaching staff has credited him with improving the defensive communication by getting to play more in the box.

2. Julio Jones has missed two days of practice, as has starting tight end Austin Hooper. What’s the plan if neither of Matt Ryan’s top weapons can play Thursday?

Austin Hooper is almost certainly out, but Julio Jones is still a mystery. Missing practice or being limited early in the week has been pretty common for Jones, but he was noticeably in pain while playing through a shoulder injury in Week 12.Calvin Ridley has stepped up with Hooper out and has built great chemistry with Matt Ryan. Also, second-year WR Russell Gage had a career-best eight catches for 76 yards last week.

3. How is the new defensive play calling approach working? It gave the Saints trouble with six sacks against Drew Brees, but are they still getting pressure often?

The Falcons had just seven total sacks entering that Week 10 upset, and combined for 11 over the next two weeks. Desmond Trufant’s return has helped in the secondary, but the team we saw play in Sunday’s loss to the Buccaneers looked a lot like the one fans grew accustomed to seeing during those first eight weeks. Atlanta did not record a sack, but did intercept Jameis Winston twice. It wasn’t a complete drop off in terms of pressure, the team just came up short of making plays when they had the chance to.

4. What is the biggest possible difference Saints fans will pick up on in this rematch of the game they saw just a few weeks ago?

Something that may have been overlooked in that Week 10 game was just how well Atlanta’s offensive line played against a very good Saints defense. The Falcons kept things going with another stellar performance up front in Week 11.The Bucs brought them back to earth on Sunday, however, and they could struggle to protect Ryan after getting exposed last week. I expect Sean Payton to have a better game-plan this time, and to attack some of the same areas he saw Bruce Arians, go after in the Falcons secondary.

5. Alright, who’s winning this thing? What is your final score prediction?

This is one of those games that while my head says the Saints will win, my gut tells me the Falcons may get up for this one the way they did three weeks ago when these teams met. I’ll go with my head, though, and say New Orleans wins, 27-23.

No. 16 Notre Dame/Boston College: Keys & Predictions

Notre Dame lost four times alone on their home field in 2016. Since then they’ve lost only six times total and only once one their home field, that coming against eventual national runner-up Georgia in 2017.

No. 16 Notre Dame welcomes Boston College this weekend as Senior Day is upon us. It’s not a perfect formula seeing as plenty from the 2016 recruiting class have a year of eligibility remaining and will be back next season but take this into consideration as many will play their final game at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday:

Notre Dame lost four times alone on their home field in 2016. Since then they’ve lost only six times total and only once one their home field, that coming against eventual national runner-up Georgia in 2017.

I know that ultimate goal of another appearance in the College Football Playoff isn’t attainable but an unbeaten November for a program that has had their issues late in seasons to play hard and play well through the end is worthy of some praise, although not everything.

So how do the Irish avoid coming out flat in their final home game of 2019 and walk out victorious while preferably not hopefully not having things get overly interesting late?

Keys:

Offense:

Jeff:

Things probably aren’t going to come as easy as they did last week but I thought the diversity of the play calling last week from Chip Long was on point. Continue to use the skill sets of these young receivers like Keys and Lenzy and build their confidence. If all else fails, throw it to Claypool 🙂

Nick:

Boston College gets thrown all over all the time. Ian Book has looked very good since the last two drives against Virginia Tech, keep that rolling today and hang a big number.

Defense:

Jeff:

Stop AJ Dillon. Make BC work through the air. It’s really that simple to me. Dillon is one of the toughest players in the country to bring down and there’s no doubt the Irish have struggled against running games that can at least throw the ball a little. I’m looking at you Navy.

Nick:

Contain the running game. AJ Dillion is great and he’s a threat in their pass game as well but David Bailey is solid too, assuming he ends up playing Saturday. Michigan made you look a fool while you went and just did the same to Navy – now take care of business against BC’s rushing attacking.

Predictions:

Jeff: Notre Dame 38, Boston College 17

Nick: Notre Dame 34, Boston College 20
