One could argue that the Buffalo Bills’ current roster is their strongest of the 21st century.

With a star-studded defense, a bonafide top-10 wide receiver, and a budding young quarterback, Buffalo appears to be a legitimate contender for the first time in years. That being said, there’s always room for improvement.

There are a few players left on the open market who could potentially push the team over the top, serving to strengthen the Bills’ Super Bowl hopes. On this episode of The Kyle Silagyi Variety Hour, host Kyle Silagyi is joined by BillsWire staff writers Justin DiLoro and McKenna Middlebrook to look at the remaining free agents who the Bills should pursue.

1 pending free agent Chargers should target: AFC South Edition

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez lists one pending free agent from each team in the AFC South that the Los Angeles Chargers could target.

The Los Angeles Chargers are set to enter free agency with the most salary cap available since Tom Telesco took over as general manager in 2013.

Even though the franchise has some in-house players that will need to get paid, there’s a great chance that Telesco and company will be aggressive in signing other soon-to-be free agents to bolster an already talented roster, with the hopes of making a quick turnaround after finishing 5-11 in 2019.

With that being said, we are going to list one pending free agent from each team in the NFL that could be a realistic target for L.A. Next up is the AFC South.

Improving the trenches this offseason is an absolute must. Both tackle positions could be upgraded, not just the right tackle spot, because Russell Okung might be a cap casualty when considering his medical and injury history. If the Chargers were to let go of Okung, finding a proven left tackle sits atop of the to-do list.

Castonzo, 31, has manned the left tackle position for the Colts for years now, where he’s been the model of consistency and durability. Castonzo ranked seventh out of 101 qualifying tackles in 2019, per Pro Football Focus. After proving to be one of the more dominant tackles in the league, Castonzo could require a hefty paycheck, but it would be money well spent.

Colts Wire predicted his next contract could be for two years worth $35 million with $26.25 million guaranteed.

Bills in the 2010s: Best defensive players of the decade

Here are the best players on defense for Buffalo during the last decade.

The defense has been the stronger unit of the Buffalo Bills over the past 10 years. Defensive coordinators Leslie Frazier and Jim Schwartz have each guided their respective units to top-10 finishes during the past number of years.

As the 2010s close, it’s a natural time to review how the Bills have looked on the defensive side of the ball over the past decade.

Here are the best players on defense for Buffalo during the last decade:

Defensive tackle: Kyle Williams, Marcell Dareus

Kyle Williams was a fixture in Buffalo for 13 seasons. During his play in this decade, he led defensive linemen with 396 total tackles and 71 tackles for loss. Tack in 40.5 sacks in 121 games, and you have quite the player for the interior of the Bills line. Williams was named to six Pro Bowls during this time period.

Marcell Dareus is a story of what could have been. In 91 games, he recorded 300 total tackles and 35 sacks. He surely was dominant at times, but he just did not gel with the Sean McDermott regime. Dareus was a two-time Pro-Bowl selection with Buffalo and was an All-Pro with the squad in 2014.

Jags place rookie LB Quincy Williams on IR, claim LB Preston Brown off waivers

With the playoffs out of sight, the Jacksonville Jaguars continued to shuffle their roster Wednesday. The team added a linebacker in Preston Brown from waivers, who formerly played for their Week 15 opponents in the Oakland Raiders. To make room for the move, they placed 2019 third-round selection Quincy Williams on injured reserve.

Doug Marrone told the media that he would consider lineup changes at linebacker in his Wednesday morning presser, which is why the decision to put Williams on IR isn’t a complete shocker. Williams was on Wednesday’s injury report with a hand injury, but was limited in the process. It’s possible the Jags felt that the injury would be an issue after watching him throughout practice, or maybe they just saw enough out of the rookie, who has struggled at times.

As for Brown, he was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the third-round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Afterward, he spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals before joining the Raiders last month.

Brown will enter his tenure in Jacksonville with 609 career tackles, five interceptions and three forced fumbles. As a collegiate player at Louisville, he appeared in 52 games, started in 37 and accumulated 301 tackles, seven sacks and one interception.

Former Bengals LB Preston Brown already cut by Raiders

Preston Brown was already cut by the Raiders.

The Cincinnati Bengals shocked onlookers by cutting veteran linebacker Preston Brown in the middle of this strife-filled season.

Brown turned around and linked up with the Oakland Raiders — but only for a single game.

The Raiders announced Brown among three cuts Tuesday, all of a day removed from Raiders head coach Jon Gruden making it clear he wanted to make some wide-sweeping changes to the defense.

Brown spent one game with Oakland, playing 17 snaps. Prior to that, he had inked a three-year extension with the Bengals, only to be cut in an uncharacteristic manner by the team after nine games.

After getting cut by the Bengals, Brown sent out a message to his hometown.

Based on his departure only a few games ago though, don’t expect a reunion in Cincinnati.

Former Bengals LB Preston Brown sends message to Cincinnati, fans

The former Bengals linebacker sent a letter to the city of Cincinnati.

Former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Preston Brown penned a letter to the city of Cincinnati this week.

As seen in the tweet above from Tyler Dragon of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Brown took a moment to thank the team, city and fans and noted his work in the community won’t stop.

Brown was a feel-good story when he arrived via free agency before the 2018 season. The Cincinnati native looked like a possible long-term answer at linebacker before things fell apart this season.

While the team-player fit didn’t work out over the long run, it’s clear it will always be a special part of Brown’s career as he now gets started with the Oakland Raiders.

Report: Bengals cut LB Preston Brown

A day removed from Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor challenging his linebackers to step up and be leaders, the team has cut veteran Preston Brown.

The Bengals made the move Tuesday, according to Tyler Dragon of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Brown was a feel-good story for coming over via free agency last season thanks to his hometown status. But he’s increasingly seen his playing time cut over the past few games, culminating in rookie Germaine Pratt out-snapping him in the 49-13 loss to Baltimore in Week 10.

Brown had two years left on his deal through the 2021 season after signing a three-year deal in March.

While Taylor continues to search for help at linebacker, the new roster spot might go to an IR-returning player soon such as John Ross or Darius Phillips. But an outside move for a linebacker wouldn’t be unexpected either.
