Tigers move up in the polls after beating the Gators

LSU won a huge road series last weekend, and the pollsters took notice.

LSU finished last week with a 2-2 record, but it ended on a high note. After a 12-inning loss to Louisiana Tech on Wednesday, the Tigers were able to win their first conference series of the year as they took the weekend series from Florida 2-1.

LSU was led at the plate by designated hitter [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag]. He batted .444 (4-for-9) in two games against the Gators with three home runs, five runs scored, and nine RBI. Freshman right-hander [autotag]Grant Taylor[/autotag] pitched LSU to a series-clinching win on Sunday over No. 7-ranked Florida in Gainesville with the longest outing of his career.

Taylor entered the game in the fourth inning in relief of fellow true freshman [autotag]Samuel Dutton[/autotag] and pitched the rest of the game, limiting the Gators to two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings with two walks and a career-best six strikeouts. LSU will play the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. CT before starting its third SEC series as the Auburn Tigers come to town this weekend.

After winning a huge series against a top-10 team on the road, the Tigers are on the rise in the polls. Here’s where they stand according to the latest national rankings.

LSU baseball rises as high as No. 3 in Baseball polls

The Tigers went 4-1 this past week, moving up in the polls in the process.

After playing a five-game stretch last week in which the Tigers went 4-1, LSU has climbed the college baseball rankings as high as the No. 3 spot.

This is fitting, because LSU’s No. 3 has a lot to do with why the Tigers had so much success during that stretch. LSU outfielder Dylan Crews batted .444 (8-for-18) with one triple, two homers, nine RBI, four runs scored, and a .565 on-base percentage in the last five games.

Crews is now hitting a team-high .483 on the year with one double, three triples, two homers, 13 RBI, and 12 runs. Along with the hot-hitting Crews, the Tigers definitely got their Money’s worth when Blake Money was on the mound. Money was brilliant on Friday night, as he defeated Towson with seven shutout innings, increasing his scoreless innings streak this season to 14 straight.

Money limited Towson to no runs on just two hits – a pair of singles – in seven innings with two walks and seven strikeouts. Money is 2-0 this season with a 0.00 ERA, a .085 opponent batting average, and three walks and 17 strikeouts in 14 innings.

The Tigers rank No. 3 in the Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game rankings, and they sit in the top 10 of D1 Baseball, USA TODAY Sports and Baseball America’s polls, sitting at No. 7 in the former two and at No. 8 in the latter.

This week will be a very interesting week for LSU Baseball as the Tigers play against New Orleans this Wednesday before traveling to Minute Maid Park in Houston for the Shriners College Classic. LSU will play Oklahoma on Friday, No. 1 Texas on Saturday, and Baylor on Sunday.

Where ACC teams rank in latest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll

Will Notre Dame soon be joining the receiving votes category?

Notre Dame won a pair of games this past week but still isn’t receiving any votes in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll.  However, it’s becoming less of Duke and Duke only in the ACC.  Duke remains the only ranked team in this week’s poll but three others from the ACC picked up receiving votes which might not seem like much but for where this conference has been this year it’s notable.

A look at the full Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports:

Brad Holmes was hired one year ago today. How do you feel about Holmes after one year?

It’s been exactly one year since the Detroit Lions hired Brad Holmes as the team’s general manager. We’ve now had one draft class, one season of free agency and one major trade involving quarterbacks to help evaluate the performance after a calendar year.

Where are Lions fans at on Holmes and his first year? Vote in the poll below and make your voice heard!

ESPN’s latest FPI Rankings leave much to be desired

Is the goal still to score more points than the other team?

Earlier this year I took some time looking at ESPN’s FPI rankings and had a lot of questions.  Although the latest FPI rankings now at least have Georgia ahead of Clemson (unlike right after they straight-up beat them), I’ve still got questions.

Georgia is atop the rankings while Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Michigan, and Cincinnati come in 2-6.  You can make some argument for an unbeaten Oklahoma over Ohio State, who lost at home to Oregon, but it’s hard to be overly upset about any of those teams.

So you’re aware, Notre Dame checks in 18th which is hilarious when you see some of the teams ranked ahead of them.  I obviously think they should be higher than that but as you’ll quickly see, losing closely seems to reward teams more than winning narrowly does in this formula.

So which teams had me the most bumfuzzled (shoutout to Bobby Bowden for that one) this week?

Here are just a few observations:

Where does Oklahoma land in FiveThirtyEight’s College Football Playoff projections?

After a big win over the Texas Longhorns, where do the Oklahoma Sooners land on FiveThirtyEight’s College Football Playoff Projections?

With college football at the midway point, postseason projections and predictions are in full swing. Most teams in the FBS have played at least 5 games already and as we get closer to flipping the page to November, it only brings us closer to the College Football Playoff rankings.

FiveThirtyEight, led by Nate Silver, uses statistical analysis for polling and predicting results. ESPN has used its analysis to predict the College Football Playoff participants, college football predictions, and bowl games for years. Today, FiveThiryEight released their College Football Playoff Projections, and the Oklahoma Sooners come in with the second-best chance to make the College Football Playoff.

Per FiveThirtyEight

Georgia, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Iowa round out their projected top four. Georgia currently stands as the number one team in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll and the Associated Press Top 25.

Barring a catastrophic collapse, UGA seems destined to make the playoffs behind the best defense in the sport. Alabama still has a very clear path to making the playoff due to their pedigree and their team. If they can rebound and win the SEC, they’ll be a shoe-in for the playoff.

Oklahoma’s hardly been as dominant as others in this top four but they remain undefeated and may be on the verge of a breakthrough after their big win against rival Texas. A game that saw them find much more dynamic play when they switched to Caleb Williams.

Statistically, here’s how Oklahoma looks going forward as they get ready for TCU. FiveThirtyEight has Oklahoma at a 50% chance to win the Big 12, a 48% chance to make the CFP, and a 10% chance to win the national title.

With a win against TCU, those same numbers jump up to a 55% chance at winning the conference, a 53% chance to make the playoff, and a 12% chance to win the national title while increasing their chances to win out to 19%.

Oklahoma has all of their goals out in front of them and it seems like the numbers back them up. Simply put, just win.

They host a Gary Patterson-coached TCU team who hardly resembles the tough Horned Frogs defenses of the past. However, they are more than capable of causing chaos in Norman.

The Sooners will have to figure out who will start at quarterback, but if they get remotely the same level of production they got from Caleb Williams in the Red River Showdown, then they’ll be a shoo-in for the College Football Playoff.

Notre Dame wins at Virginia Tech but has two teams pass them in AP Poll

Should the Irish have been passed by anyone following a win at Virginia Tech?

Notre Dame remained ranked 14th overall in the latest AP Poll after the Irish came back in a tough road environment to hand Virginia Tech their second loss of the season.  In moving to 5-1 Notre Dame didn’t fall in the polls, but passed both Arkansas and BYU who lost this weekend.

Notre Dame was however passed by a pair of SEC schools after they both picked up wins on Saturday.  Kentucky beat up on LSU and moved from 16 to 11 while Ole Miss stopped an Arkansas two-point conversion attempt on the game’s final play to move to 4-1 and to the No. 13 ranking after checking in at 17 last week.

It may be frustrating in the moment but Kentucky will have a test next week as they travel to No. 1 Georgia.

Just keep winning games if you’re Notre Dame and they’ll be moving up in no time.

Notre Dame drops five spots in AP Poll

Where should both Notre Dame and Cincinnati be ranked after what you watched?

Notre Dame’s 24-13 loss to Cincinnati sent the Irish back to No. 13 in the USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll.  The Irish also understandably fell in the AP Top 25 as they went from No. 9 to No. 14 with the loss.

Cincinnati moved up in the AP Poll from No. 7 to No. 5 while they currently sit sixth in the AFCA.

No. 14 Notre Dame now travels to take on Virginia Tech this Saturday night before a bye week.  As things currently sit Cincinnati is the only 2021 Notre Dame opponent to be ranked in either of the polls.

Notre Dame falls in updated USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll

This week was disappointing for the Irish in many ways

It was a wild second weekend of college football, highlighted by Oregon’s upset of Ohio State in Columbus, so there were a few changes in the USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll. There were other upsets inside the Top 25, with unranked Stanford going on the road and defeating No. 14 USC and Arkansas handling No. 15 Texas at home.

[listicle id=33983]

In the matchup of the week, Iowa once again prevailed to win the CyHawk Trophy over Iowa State, going on the road and winning 27-17, although the score doesn’t show how well the Hawkeyes really played.

[listicle id=33955]

The Irish obviously skated by again, this time rallying for a game winning drive against Toledo, to stay undefeated early this season. Unfortunately for the Irish, the win did not impress the coaches and they fell three spot to 10th.
