Angela Stanford, who will retire at the end of this season, joins the podcast to preview her final major start at Evian

It’s the event that made her a major champion in 2018, and it’s where she’ll say goodbye to major championship golf.

Angela Stanford remembers the phone call like it was yesterday. She was in bed asleep when the LPGA rang to say that she was in the field for what was then known as the Evian Masters.

Did she want to play?

That was 2001. Stanford said yes and then cried down the runway in Dallas because the small-town girl in her didn’t want to travel the globe for a living.

Fast forward to 2024. Stanford, 46, hasn’t missed an Evian since that phone call. It’s the event that made her a major champion in 2018, and it’s where she’ll say goodbye to major championship golf at some point later this week, depending on how it goes.

From her room in the Hotel Royal, where past champions stay at the Amundi Evian Championship, Stanford caught up with our Beth Ann Nichols and NBC Sports’ Grant Boone to talk about the evolution of the Evian and what it feels like to wind down a career that spans decades and includes seven LPGA victories as well as a record 98 consecutive major championship starts. It’s safe to assume that no one will ever get close to Stanford’s mark of 98 straight, a streak that ended with this year’s U.S. Women’s Open.

She’ll begin her final major championship start on Thursday off the 10th tee at picturesque Evian alongside Atthaya Thitikul and Linn Grant, two world-beaters still very much on the front nine of their careers.

For Stanford, this season will be her last on tour.

“You go through these stages of grief,” said Stanford of coming to terms with walking away.

“I haven’t been shy about telling people that I’ve been in counseling for a long time, and a lot of it was for (the death of) my mother. But I did not know that the end of my career would kind of parallel that. And they’re two really difficult things to go through at the same time. The thing that he kind of made clear to me was, look, you’re going to grieve over this too. I think it has taken me a while to get through some of those stages to where I’m so grateful now that I’m in this position, I’ve said this is it, and I can be grateful for it.”

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes reveals his strategy for handling press conferences

Kansas City #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes reveals his strategy for handling press conferences | @EdEastonJr

The responsibilities of an NFL starting quarterback stretch well beyond the work done on the field. Leadership and poise are essential qualities that Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes has become known for in his career.

During a recent appearance on the ‘Riggles Picks Podcast’ hosted by comedian Rob Riggle, Mahomes explained his handling of media press conference questions.

“It’s part of the profession. It’s part of being a quarterback and having to stay on that podium and talk win or loss. And yeah, I think what I’ve done and mastered is being able to say a lot of words without saying anything at all.” said Mahomes. “That’s my go-to whenever I get a question I might necessarily like; I’ll just say a lot of different words, but it really means nothing.”

Riggle followed Mahomes’ explanation with a live demonstration of his press conference responses. Acting like a reporter, he asked the reigning Super Bowl MVP about his thoughts on a recent game.

“Yeah. I mean, it’s always great to get out there and do whatever you can to try to find a way to get a win, but at the same time, it’s not always going to go your way,” said Mahomes. “And so for us, it’s about going back to the drawing board, putting in the work, and then seeing what we can do next week.”

The fun exchange of how Mahomes handles the media is entertaining but helpful in maintaining the focus on the team’s goal. He does his best to downplay his comments and avoid becoming a distraction.

Tom Brady appreciates seeing Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes laughing, having fun

Tom Brady appreciates seeing #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes laughing, having fun | @EdEastonJr

The daily grind of the NFL can take a toll on a player’s health, physically and mentally. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has generally expressed his passion for football during games, ranging from joy to frustration.

During his appearance on The Pivot podcast, Tom Brady spoke about today’s top quarterbacks. He mentioned Mahomes as a favorite because of his enjoyment while playing the game.

“When I see these young players, I see like Patrick (Mahomes) out there at quarterback, running around, laughing, having fun,” said Brady. “I’m like, ‘I used to be like that. What the hell happened?’

Brady thrived in the strict New England Patriots system, barely expressing his fun side until after winning Super Bowls.

“I just got too serious, but, again, I can only look back and think,” said Brady. “Okay, if I do it again, which I’ll never do again, I would be different.” But the reality is, you can’t.”

Mahomes continues to add Super Bowls to his resume, hoping to catch the illustrious seven that Brady secured in his legendary career. The reigning Super Bowl MVP appears to have a leg up on the football legend regarding fun on the field.

Marshawn Lynch to start podcast with California Gov. Gavin Newsom

Marshawn Lynch to start podcast with California Governor Gavin Newsom

There’s an old saying: Politics makes strange bedfellows. Right now, we are seeing that come true in a rather unusual way. On Wednesday morning, it was announced that former Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch and his agent Doug Hendrickson are launching a podcast this summer …

… with California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Huh. I can honestly say I did not see this one coming!

The trio announced the podcast, called Politickin’, on Instagram. It will debut on July 15. The summary of the podcast on the iHeartMedia website reads: “Gavin Newsom like you’d never heard him and Marshawn Lynch exactly how you’d expect him.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter gave a little more insight on the podcast in the tweet below.

It is always an interesting crossover when the worlds of sports and politics intersect, and it’s not often that there is such a direct connection like this. I’ll admit, my curiosity has certainly been piqued.

Additionally, I can’t help but wonder about the timing of this. I am not a political pundit, nor is anyone coming to Seahawks Wire for political analysis. But Newsom’s name has been floated over the past few years as a potential replacement for President Joe Biden. Recently, those calls have increased among certain Democrats following the President’s debate performance in late June.

Could Newsom be engaging in a new tactic to grow his popularity and relatability with younger voters? If this is truly his plan, pairing up with one of the most iconic, charismatic and popular athletes is a creative way to try to accomplish it.

Who might be poised to give Nelly Korda a run? We weigh in on this week’s podcast

After Korda’s historic run earlier this year, who might be ready to start challenging her supremacy?

Nelly Korda was scheduled to compete in the LET’s Aramco Team Series event at the Centurion Club in London, a tournament she won last year by four strokes. But Korda was forced to the sideline by a dog bite and her status is uncertain as we approach the LPGA’s fourth major of the season, the Amundi Evian Championship, which will be held in France from July 11-14.

After Korda’s historic run earlier this year, who might be ready to start challenging her supremacy?

Our Beth Ann Nichols and NBC Sports’ Grant Boone have some ideas during this week’s “Big Pickle” podcast.

Randi Mahomes discusses her early doubts about Chiefs HC Andy Reid’s strategy

Randi Mahomes discusses her early doubts about Kansas City #Chiefs HC Andy Reid’s strategy | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’s career continues to thrive as he seeks his fourth Super Bowl title and first three-peat in 2024. Success didn’t come easily, nor was becoming a football star a guaranteed path for the reigning Super Bowl MVP.

Patrick Mahomes’ mother, Randi, recently appeared on ‘The Mom Game Podcast’ with Julie Dobbs and Emily Jones. She discussed early in her son’s career when she questioned head coach Andy Reid’s strategy regarding Mahomes’ scrambling ability.

“Even the first couple years with the Chiefs, I would say I don’t think you’re supposed to do that, like scramble around, running around,” said Randi, “and he was like coach Reid [said] it works, do it. I’m like, okay, but I don’t think you’re supposed to do it, but okay.”

Mahomes played multiple sports growing up, notably baseball and basketball, with football not initially his favorite. After the NFL Draft, Randi revealed that most of his extraordinary highlight ideas or moments came from playing video games.
