Phillip Dorsett explains Texans’ third down strategy ahead of Week 8 matchup vs. Titans

Dorsett said that getting the ball to their most trusted playmakers will help the #Texans continue converting third downs at a high rate

Preparation is key for any NFL team’s game plan, but Houston Texans receiver Phillip Dorsett told reporters on Tuesday that one key factor plays the biggest role in a team’s success on third down. After careful film study and analysis of their opponent’s tendencies, he explained to the media that coming down with receptions in drive-defining moments is crucial to the Texans’ fortunes in every matchup they’ll face moving forward.

“Just understanding what coverages the team we’re playing plays, and then just work on the plays to try and execute,” Dorsett said when asked how the team is preparing to continue their improvement on third down. “The biggest thing about third down is completing the passes. We all know… you’ll probably get man coverage and some blitz. It’s just the offensive line holding up and Davis (Mills) finding the right guy and the right read. Going to your playmakers, going to the guys you know will help you. The sure-handed guys. That’s the big emphasis honestly.”

Every game they play presents new opportunities for the Texans to show new signs of life as they continue through the early stages of what promises to be a lengthy and arduous rebuilding process. Houston fans are ready to see week-to-week improvement from this up-and-coming squad of scrappy underdogs, and third downs would be an ideal situation for the team to prove that they are getting better as the 2022 season wears on.

To hear Dorsett tell it, turning third downs from a weakness to a strength should be relatively easy. All they need to do, according to the veteran receiver, is get the ball into the hands of their most reliable playmakers and rely on their film study to tell them what their best option is.

The team showed that they could convert third downs at a reasonable clip last week against the Las Vegas Raiders, but the Tennessee Titans will likely put up a better fight in Week 8. Watch for the strategy that Dorsett laid out to make or break Houston’s effort in Sunday’s matchup, and for the team to target a slew of different pass catchers in crunch-time situations.

Phillip Dorsett explains how Texans receivers can help convert more third downs

Dorsett broke down his third-down strategy to reporters

Improvement on third down played a significant role in the Houston Texans’ early offensive success in Week 7, and their players have been talking to reporters in the team’s press conferences about how they can keep the momentum they built against the Las Vegas Raiders. Veteran receiver Phillip Dorsett made a salient point on the subject in his comments on Tuesday, telling reporters that success comes down to something very simple.

“You’ve just got to win your match up,” He explained. “Whoever’s across from you. If it’s man coverage, you’ve got to beat them. If it’s zone coverage, you’ve got to find the right spot in the zone. You’ve just got to be smarter. You’ve got to play smart football on third down, and that’s what we’ve got to continue to work on.”

Dorsett seems poised to take on a bigger role in the Texans’ offense, and with an impressive touchdown scored against the Raiders, has shown hints of excellence. Perhaps the next evolution of his game will come as a trusted late-down target for quarterback Davis Mills, who needs all the help he can get in moving his unit downfield.

As one of the league’s fastest receivers, big plays come naturally to the crafty Dorsett. He was a first-round pick in the 2015 draft by way of the Indianapolis Colts but has yet to find his stride at the professional level. Trade rumors regarding fellow speed merchant Brandin Cooks have swirled ahead of the deadline, so the die may be cast for Dorsett to take over on more snaps in the near future.

Houston will take whatever they can get from him for now, but with a big-time matchup against the Tennessee Titans just days away, Dorsett will have a huge opportunity to prove that his performance against Las Vegas was more than just a flash in the pan.

Phillip Dorsett reflects on the experience of rebuilding his career with the Texans

A former first-round pick, Dorsett has seen his share of ups and downs over the course of his tumultuous career.

Phillip Dorsett was one of the most prized receiver prospects in the NFL when he came out of the University of Miami in the 2015 draft, but has seen his stock fall over the years. Now with the Houston Texans, he is looking to re-establish himself as a top-flight deep threat in 2022, and made some headway on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders, snagging a pretty touchdown off the arm of Davis Mills.

He spoke to the media on Tuesday about what the process of rebuilding his career has been like, and what challenges he has overcome to get back to his old form. Speaking bluntly, he made it clear that his path back from relative obscurity has not been an easy one.

“I’ve been good. I mean, it’s been tough,” Dorsett explained. “It’s been tough. Honestly, when it comes to – I’m not going to say football is my life, but it’s a big part of my life. I love football so much. I’ve been playing since I was six years old. To miss a full year and basically missing another full year being injured, bouncing around a little bit. It takes a toll on anybody because at the end of the day, it’s not just plug and play when it comes to football. Being in three different cities, I’ve got a wife who was pregnant at the time. You’ve just got to find your way. For me, my mentality is that I keep working hard. Don’t let anything phase you. Just keep working, and I’m still here.”

Whether Dorsett will ever live up to the hype that got him drafted in the first round back in 2015 is irrelevant. His NFL journey has been one of struggle and triumph, but his cool demeanor and persistence have made him a legend in his own right, even if accolades and adulation have eluded him.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the Texans as they look to rebuild in the years to come, Dorsett may prove to be just the kind of presence Houston needs to help get the team back on its feet.

WATCH: Davis Mills connects with Phillip Dorsett for exciting touchdown

Mills’ exceptional play has the #Texans in a position to get their second win of the season against the #Raiders

Davis Mills added to his exceptionally impressive Week 7 performance with a huge touchdown pass to Phillip Dorsett that have the Houston Texans a three-point lead in the second half. Mills has shown excellent poise in the pocket against the Las Vegas Raiders’ talented pass rush and left no doubt about his abilities on this play.

Take a look at the play below, and check out how perfect Mills’ ball placement was on the throw:

The lead has changed hands multiple times in this matchup, and the razor-thin margin of the Texans’ lead may not be enough to close this game out. Their offense will rely on more consistent play from Houston’s defense to keep the lead, and without a few stops against Derek Carr and the Raiders’ passing attack, the lead may slip out of their hands yet again.

Texans WR Phillip Dorsett walks through big catch against the Rams

Houston Texans receiver Phillip Dorsett had a key catch that setup the first-team offense’s only touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams.

The Houston Texans hadn’t done much through almost two quarters of their second preseason game.

Although the Texans were taking on the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams, they were resting their first-teamers on defense. The Texans were having trouble moving the ball, and time was short with 14 seconds left.

On a third-and-10 from Houston’s 35-yard line, quarterback Davis Mills heaved the ball down the right sideline for receiver Phillip Dorsett.

“We needed the play,” Dorsett told reporters Monday at Houston Methodist Training Center. “The offense was stagnant. We needed somebody to just go out there, just make a splash play just to get everybody up off their feet.”

Dorsett managed to catch a 32-yard pass that was initially ruled incomplete. The Texans were still going to get a big play out of it as the officials ruled unnecessary roughness against the Rams, a 15-yard automatic first down. However, replay determined Dorsett caught the ball and the pass was complete.

“It was Cover 2,” Dorsett explained. “I had a hole shot. Davis laid it up there and I saw the safety coming, so, I just focused on the ball, catch the ball, brace yourself, take the hit, try to get your feet down. I didn’t know if I got them down, but once I took the hit and I wasn’t dazed or nothing, I just took my helmet off and they were jawing at me, so I just jawed back at them.”

The play setup the Texans for their first score of the game. Mills threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Collins — another acrobatic catch — and it would not have been possible had Dorsett not made his big play with the penalty tacked on.

Texans WR Chris Moore knows consistency is vital to staying in the NFL

Houston Texans receiver Chris Moore is well aware that the ability to stay consistent is the foundation to sticking around in the NFL.

Chris Moore has had flashes of brilliance with the Houston Texans.

The former Baltimore Ravens 2016 fourth-round pick had a monster game against the New England Patriots in Week 5 last season. Moore caught five passes for 109 and a touchdown in the slim 25-22 loss at NRG Stadium.

Even though Moore finished with 21 catches for 227 yards and two touchdowns, he didn’t want to rest on his laurels, but rather use it as a platform to remain as one of second-year quarterback Davis Mills’ reliable options.

“Every time I come out on the field, I give my hardest work,” Moore told reporters on Aug. 17. “I work hard. I think it should improve even more this year because me and Davis got some good time in during the offseason with all the wide receivers getting together and throwing. That’s the biggest thing in the league, if you can be consistent, you can play for a long time.”

Moore has also been working on how he connects and melds with other receivers. The Texans’ passing game will feature Brandin Cooks, Nico Collins, Chris Conley, and Phillip Dorsett, which means Moore has to find a way to complement their production.

“I feel like all the receivers complement each other,” said Moore. “When you’ve got two guys like that that are fast and just like to take the top off of defenses, they can be a dangerous threat out there for sure.”

Moore caught two passes for 25 yards in the 17-13 preseason win over the New Orleans Saints on Aug. 13 at NRG Stadium. Moore will look to showcase more of his reliability and indispensable qualities in the second preseason tilt with the Los Angeles Rams Aug. 19 at SoFi Stadium.
