Josh Sweat injury updates: Latest news on Eagles pass rusher

Josh Sweat is questionable to return to the Philadelphia Eagles game against the Washington Commanders after suffering an ankle injury

With a win over the Commanders, the Eagles can clinch the NFC East, and that’ll be good because the injuries are starting to pile up. After Jalen Hurts was forced to leave with a concussion, rookie running back Will Shipley followed, along with Jordan Davis and Josh Sweat.

The Eagles team leader in sacks, Sweat, is questionable to return with an ankle injury.

If Sweat didn’t return, Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith, and Oren Burks would be primary pass rushers.

WATCH: Commanders’ trash-talking RB fumbles for a second time in game vs. Eagles

WATCH: A second fumble by Washington Commanders’ trash-talking RB Brian Robinson gives the Philadelphia Eagles excellent field position

Before Sunday’s huge NFC East contest, Commanders running back Brian Robinson caused controversy by saying Washington “believes they’re a better team” than Philadelphia.

Early in the first quarter, the Eagles were up 7-0, and if they had gone up 14-0, Robinson would have significantly contributed to the deficit. With the Commanders trying to answer a Saquon Barkley touchdown run, Robinson was stripped by Jalen Carter and fumbled in Washington territory.

Then, early in the second quarter, Robinson fumbled again, giving the Eagles great field position.

After Jalen Hurts exited to get checked for a concussion, backup quarterback Kenny Pickett found A.J. Brown in the endzone for a touchdown. Philadelphia is up 21-7 on Washington.

Jalen Hurts injury updates: Eagles QB exits game vs. Commanders with a concussion

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts forced to exit game vs. Commanders with a concussion

Philadelphia has a 21-7 lead over Washington, and they’ll have to wrap up the NFC East without quarterback Jalen Hurts.

The Eagles star signal-caller was evaluated for a concussion after taking an ugly hit on a quarterback draw.

Hurts was 1-4 passing for 11 yards and had three carries for 41 yards before exiting for the blue medical tent.

In his first real game action this season, backup quarterback and former Steelers first-round pick Kenny Pickett is 3-4 passing for 20 yards, a touchdown to A.J. Brown, and one ugly interception.

WATCH: Saquon Barkley goes 68-yards untouched for TD vs. Commanders

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley goes 68-yards untouched for TD vs. Commanders

Saquon Barkley hit a slight hiccup in Week 15, as the Eagles star running back rushed for just 65 yards on 19 carries. Barkley, who entered Sunday still leading the NFL with 1,688 yards, just amassed his yardage from last week in one explosive run.

The Eagles star went 68 yards untouched to put Philadelphia up 21-7 over Washington with Jalen Hurts in the locker room with a likely concussion.

Barkley has shattered LeSean McCoy’s single-season rushing record (1,607) set in 2013 for Philadelphia, and he’s pacing toward A 2,000-yard rushing season ahead of a deep playoff run.

Eric Dickerson made NFL history with the Rams in 1984, and despite a handful of 2,000-yard rushing seasons in the four decades that have followed, that record still stands.

To break Dickerson’s record, Barkley must average 139 rushing yards per game. To reach 2,000 yards rushing, Barkley has to average 104 rushing yards.

Barkley has seven carries for 109 yards (15.6 avg) and two touchdowns.

NFL insider thinks Eagles should lose season finale to Giants to spoil No. 1 pick in draft

NFL insider Adam Schefter thinks the Eagles should lose season finale to Giants to spoil New York’s chances at the No. 1 pick in draft

With a win on Sunday, the Eagles would clinch the NFC East, continue their path to the playoffs, and potentially earn the No. 1 seed.

Philadelphia needs the Lions and Vikings to lose a game to secure the top seed, and one NFL insider believes the Birds should plan for the future in the final two games of the year.

During Sunday’s NFL Countdown, ESPN insider Adam Schefter voiced the idea of the Eagles sitting Saquon Barkley in Week 18, moving away from his quest to pass Eric Dickerson and losing to the Giants, hurting their chances at securing the No. 1 pick in April’s NFL draft.

The Giants and Raiders are both 2-12 and New York would win a tiebreaker based on the strength of the schedule. The New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, and Jacksonville Jaguars are 3-11.

Jalen Hurts to wear mismatch cleats during Eagles game vs. Commanders in Week 16

Jalen Hurts to wear mismatch cleats during Eagles game vs. Commanders in Week 16

You can’t ban greatness, and on the heels of the NFL fining Jalen Hurts for wearing mismatch cleats against the Steelers in Week 15, the Eagles star quarterback is doing it again.

Knowing full well that Jordan Brand would cover the fine, Hurts again, donned the mismatched Kelly Green and Midnight Green Jordan cleats for the game against the Commanders in Washington.

The NFL fined Hurts $5,628 for violating the league’s uniform and equipment rules in Sunday’s win over Pittsburgh.

Officially, Hurts was fined for wearing a shoe color other than one of the Eagles’ “Constitutional team colors.”

Nick DePaula reported that Hurts won’t be paying that fine or this week’s financial punishment. Jordan Brand will ensure their star quarterback keeps his money, similar to a move they made with Michael Jordan 40 years ago.

Earlier in the season, Hurts turned heads when he was forced to wear one white Jordan and another Green Jordan cleat after having his foot stepped on and not wanting to miss a play.

Commanders-Eagles inactives: Who’s in, who’s out for Week 16

Which players are in for the Commanders in Week 16? Who is out? The Week 16 inactive list is here.

Today, the Washington Commanders (9-5) host the Philadelphia Eagles (12-2) in an NFC East showdown from Northwest Stadium. The Commanders received some good news ahead of kickoff, as tight end Zach Ertz and safety Jeremy Chinn are active and will play.

Ertz and Chinn suffered concussions in last week’s win over the Saints and were in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Ertz is Washington’s second-leading receiver and Chinn is the team’s second-leading tackler.

Last week, the Commanders had a surprise inactive on gameday. Starting center Tyler Biadasz was sick and ruled out just before kickoff. Biadasz is healthy and will play. Fortunately for Washington, there were no surprises this week.

As for the rest of the inactives, here’s the Commanders’ list for Week 16:

  • QB Jeff Driskel
  • DT Phidarian Mathis
  • G Chris Paul
  • WR K.J. Osborn
  • LB Dominique Hampton
  • CB Michael Davis

Osborn was claimed off waivers less than two weeks ago and has been inactive for his first two games for the Commanders.

Here are the Eagles’ inactives for Week 16:

  • WR Britain Covey
  • QB Tanner McKee
  • CB Eli Ricks
  • OL Nick Gates
  • OL Darian Kinnard
  • G Trevor Keegan

Which Eagles’ defender ‘wrecked’ the Commanders in Week 11?

Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury shows respect to this Eagles’ defender.

Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury met with the media on Thursday to preview this Sunday’s rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The two NFC East rivals met just five weeks ago, with the Eagles coming away with a 26-18 victory. The Commanders actually led this game heading into the fourth quarter. But Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley took over in the fourth quarter, rushing for two touchdowns and finishing with 198 yards of total offense.

In the first meeting, the Commanders, a top-five NFL offense all season, managed only 264 total yards against the top-ranked Philly defense. Kingsbury singled out one player from the Week 11 meeting who “wrecked” the Commanders.

“It starts, I think, with coach [Eagles DC Vic] Fangio, they’re very well coached,” Kingsbury said. “They don’t give up anything easy. You gotta defeat them, not a lot of big plays. And then creating havoc up front, 98 [Philadelphia Eagles DT Jalen Carter] is as good a player as there is in the NFL right now. He wrecked us the first game, and they have some really good rushers.”

Philadelphia has several talented defenders at every level of the defense. But Carter is unique. Carter, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, was widely considered the best player in his class, but an off-field incident dropped him, and the Eagles happily pounced.

Carter has 4.5 sacks this season, but his dominance doesn’t always appear on the stat sheet. His impact does, though, as Philly’s defense is ranked No. 1 in scoring defense, pass defense and total defense. The Eagles are ranked seventh against the run.

Kingsbury explained why the Eagles are so difficult to run against.

“The two guys inside there have done a great job of even if they empty the box out, really making the run game difficult,” he said. “Not many people have been able to establish it. Baltimore is one of the best teams and running the football and it was kind of tough sledding for them.”

Washington’s offensive line struggled with Philadelphia’s defensive line, specifically the interior five weeks ago. Kingsbury must have an answer for that front or it could be another long day for the Commanders on offense.
