Barry Sanders will be the honorary Lions captain vs. 49ers

Barry Sanders will be the honorary Lions captain vs. 49ers

The last time the Detroit Lions played for the NFC Championship, Barry Sanders was the team’s featured star. On Sunday, the Lions will once again play and advance to the Super Bowl, and Sanders will once again be with the team.

The Lions announced that Sanders will be the team’s honorary captain for Sunday’s NFC Championship game in San Francisco. The Hall of Fame running back has been a fixture with the Lions during this postseason run and will get to rep his team at the coin toss.

The last time the Lions made it this far, Sanders was in his third season and helped lead the team into the NFC Championship game after the 1991 season. Unfortunately, those Lions ran into a buzzsaw in the then-Redskins.

Hopefully Sanders can help get the Lions over the hump against the 49ers.

Washington holds a new record after Lions’ NFL playoff win

Another ugly record for Washington.

With the Detroit Lions’ win on Sunday, the Washington franchise was again in the news, but not for good reasons.

On Sunday, in the NFC Divisional playoff round, the Detroit Lions defeated the Tampa Bay Bucs 31-23, advancing to next Sunday’s NFC Championship game. It is the first time the Lions have earned a trip to the game in 32 seasons.

It now means the Cowboys have the second-longest drought of 28 seasons, and unfortunately, yes, Washington now has the NFL’s longest drought of 32 seasons since playing in a conference championship game.

It was the magical 1991 season when the Lions defeated the Cowboys in Detroit of the Divisional round earning a trip to face the Redskins at RFK, who had defeated the Falcons 24-7 in the mud during the seat-cushion game.

In that NFC Championship game, the Lions had future Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders, but Washington had their own Hall of Famers (Art Monk, Darrell Green, and Russ Grimm, who was injured) and several big-time players making big-time plays like Wilber Marshall with his three sacks.

Charles Mann’s sack and forced fumble on the Lions’ initial series was recovered by Fred Stokes, setting the tone for the day. Mark Rypien completed 12 of 17 passes for 228 yards, two touchdowns and a 152.2 passer rating.

Washington held Sanders to 44 yards in his 11 carries, and Monk and Gary Clark both had second-half touchdown receptions from Rypien, while Green’s interception return for a 32-yard touchdown raised the final score to 41-10.

So now, it is Washington who has the longest streak in the NFL of not playing in a conference championship game since 1991 (32 seasons). It is no coincidence that the former owner began his era in 1999, and it ended as recently as this past July.

Now we hope the new Josh Harris ownership group, general manager Adam Peters, and the next head coach will be the ones to end this three-decades-long drought.

Watch: The Barry Sanders movie trailer lays out the question of why he retired in his prime at age 31

Prime Sports Video released the trailer for the upcoming documentary film about Lions legend Barry Sanders.

“We’ll never see something like Barry Sanders again,” the trailer begins, and then we’re instantly reminded of just how true that statement is.

“Bye Bye Barry” will tell the intriguing story of Sanders’ incredible career as a Detroit Lions running back and icon, in the words of those who played with him and against him, and those who covered him in his prime.

It will also feature Sanders himself discussing what everyone wants to really know: Why did he walk away at 31?

From the press release:

Twenty-four years after the shocking decision to walk away from the sport, NFL Films joined the 55-year-old Sanders and his four sons on a trip back to England to explore his career, revisit his upbringing, and tackle one of the greatest mysteries in sports history: Why did he retire when he did?

The movie debuts on Nov. 21 on Prime Video.

Barry Sanders seeks Twitter to help with LinkedIn ban

Former Detroit Lions RB Barry Sanders asked Twitter to lend him some help getting in touch with LinkedIn over a ban of his account.

Getting blocked is unfamiliar territory for Barry Sanders.

After spending 1989-1998 in the NFL as one of the most premier running backs ever, Sanders was used to being tackled, not blocked.

However, the former Detroit Lions face of the franchise found himself on the wrong end of a block from LinkedIn Thursday morning.

Hoping I can enlist @Lions fan support,” Sanders tweeted. @LinkedIn has suspended my account as they don’t believe it is me. Of course they have NO customer service so asking my fans to blow up their @X [formerly Twitter] account until someone reaches out to my team.”

Not only Lions fans, but football fans were helpful in getting the Pro Football Hall of Famer support. Here are among the best retweets.

UPDATE — According to Sanders on social media, he was able to get his account restored.

“TEAM SANDERS came thru,” Sanders wrote. “Linked In has restored my account.”
